Send us your thoughts! Swedish jazz virtuoso Ebba Åsman has announced the forthcoming release of her third full-length record When You Know. The new album arrives March 21st, 2025 via Dorado Records.Coinciding with the announcement of ‘When You Know' of the upcoming album are the joint first singles - the title track ‘When You Know' and ‘No Answer'. The pair of songs channel the feelings that came into clarity for Åsman during her time in the woods: the stresses of not knowing where you're headed, sensing that you're losing grip of the life you've built, drowning in the infinite questions that swirl around in your head – and ultimately, accepting the uncertainty of it all. The latter track has been described as the turning point of the album, where acceptance of the circumstances begin to prevail.Coming off of a Swedish Grammy (GRAMMIS) nomination for her 2023 sophomore album ‘Be Free', live showings at North Sea Jazz Festival and London's Ronnie Scott's and an appointment as one of Yamaha's brand ambassadors, the trombonist, songwriter and producer sought to quiet the noise around her and challenge the jazz genre's rigid rules for her next project. The end result is ‘When You Know'; a smoky and melancholic 10-track cocktail of jazz, alternative R&B, indie, Hip-Hop and ambient sonics that experiments at every turn. On hand to co-produce the record and provide the electronic elements that move ‘When You Know' away from the jazz world and into more avant-garde territory, Ebba collaborated with Berlin-based producer Lucy Liebe. Packing a potent emotional punch into a running time of just 31 minutes, the 10 tracks are a reflection of Ebba herself: direct, driven, precise. Retreating to a cabin outside of her small hometown of Hammarö, 200 miles west of Stockholm, she recorded the album in the dead of winter. With the temperatures outside nearing minus-thirty degrees, Åsman logged off for a month – disconnecting from TV, social media and emails. Embracing with vigour both the deep sense of calm and the challenges that come with the cold but also the stillness and solitude that is yielded being in the wilderness.Though this is Åsman's third studio album, it will be the first time she's singing on record. An important statement and moment of transition for Ebba. Elaborating on this further she said: “If you're singing, you are the closest you can be to your own expression but I wanted to first be respected as an instrumentalist. If you're a woman and you tell people you're a musician, everyone assumes and says “Oh – so you're a singer?”. ‘When You Know' will mark the moment on which Ebba Åsman's exceptional gifts are finally crystallised. At age 7, she began learning trombone and by 15, she won a place to study the instrument at the Södra Latin School in Stockholm. The renowned hot-house for Swedish talent whose alumni include Lykke Li, Yung Lean and the prolific hit songwriter Max Martin. But when she moved to the Netherlands to study at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, she began to push against the constraints of formal learning.  Self-identifying as a “jazz rebel”, rather than being preoccupied with the theoretical and mechanical aspects of jazz, Ebba operates from a mode of pure intuition and feeling. At just 26, ‘When You Know' finds Åsman continuing to push the boundaries of jazz through the two distinct sides of her musical self: the notes she conjures from the trombone and now, her voice.Support the show

Dave Swift may not be a household name but he's shared the stage with legendary musicians such as Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Cher, Joss Stone, Eric Clapton, Roger Daughtry, Paul Simon ... and those are just a few.  He's been a member of Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 1991 and also a with the house band on Later with Jools Holland (one of the top tv shows in the UK) He's been called by Bass Guitar magazine as  "one of UK's top bassists" We had a great conversation with Dave and probably one of our longest interviews.  We covered a lot of ground from Dave's early beginnings learning his first instrument (not the bass) to auditioning for Jools Holland and recently recording with Rod Stewart for his upcoming album.  There's a lot in between and some great stories from Dave about some legendary musicians he's worked with.  Like the time they needed a guitar player to fill in (for the house guitarist) when Smokey Robinson was set to do a live show... you won't beleive who they got to fill in.   We thank Dave for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us.  He's currently on tour and also in rehearsals for the tv show so he's got a lot going on.  Dave was such a pleasure to talk to and you'll hear it in his voice how serious he is about what he does and the love for his art of making music. I first discovered Trilok Gurtu's music around 25 to 30 years ago when it was playing in a record store. It was like my soul instantly connected with his music, and I've been following his work ever since. About a decade later, I had the incredible opportunity to back up Trilok in a performance. Let me tell you, he left me completely awestruck. During the sound check, he did something mind-blowing – he used his left hand and left foot on a standard drum set while simultaneously using his right hand and foot to create a completely different rhythm on an Indian percussion setup. "Wow" is the only word that can capture what I witnessed and heard; it was truly breathtaking, and it left my brain and heart wanting more. Later, I had the pleasure of meeting Trilok in person. I can confidently say that he's not only an extraordinary musician but also a genuinely nice person to chat with. Trilok Gurtu's musical journey began in Bombay, India, where he was born into a musical family. He started playing at a very young age and later travelled to Europe, where he joined the Don Cherry quartet and went on to tour worldwide with groups like Oregon, collaborating with jazz and world music greats. Over the years, he evolved as a musician and performer, blending modern jazz and rock with elements of Indian rhythms and singing into his compositions. His stage presence and humorous presentations added a unique aspect to his performances. visit acedoutpodcast.com to see photos and moreWhen DAWN SILVA – (Brides of Funkenstein, P-Funk, GAP Band, All My funky Friends] – shopped her autobiography, The FUNK QUEEN to book publishers, they didn't exactly grasp the entire vision. “Everybody said the same thing,” she says. “‘You can't do it.'” This is because the OG funkateer had created something you don't see on shelves every day. “Mine is not only a table book with classic photos,” she explains. “It also has an autobiography, and there‘s about maybe five books within that one book.” Gathering the photos was a tale unto itself, starting with a man by the name of Steve Labelle, an ex-police officer turned photographer who traveled with Parliament Funkadelic from 1976 to 1981. “He was a fanatic,” she recalls. “So he went out on the road with us for all those years and he took all these photos… His health took a turn for the worse and he had been sitting on those photos for about 30 years… So he asked me to make him a promise that, if he sent those photos to me to me, I would put them in my book.” So she raised the capital and had it manufactured herself—a seven pound (!) hardcover masterpiece in the form of a beautifully printed, glossy package containing over 500 pages of rich funk history, way more than knee deep with amazing and tragic tales, as well as brushes with funk and soul greatness that will inspire ladies young and old while imbuing the fellas with a greater respective for Dawn's legacy. And just like everything else in her storied career, she had done exactly what the powers that be had said she couldn't do. “I took a chance because everyone said I couldn't do it and it wouldn't work,” she confirms. “And it's working.” Taking chances is what made Dawn a professional singer in the first place. As a young lady, her first major singing gig was as a member of a latterday version of Sly & the Family Stone. Then she jumped ship—mothership that is—and, along with other funk queens whom Dawn calls “thoroughbreds”—she appeared across all P-Funk platforms, from Parliament's Motor Booty Affair and Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome, to Funkadelic's One Nation Under Groove and Uncle Jam Wants You. Her voice can also be heard all over such essential, stanky classics as Eddie Hazel's beloved solo album Game, Dames & Guitar Thangs, and the Sweat Band and Horny Horns albums. Even more importantly, she took center stage to co-lead the BRIDES OF FUNKENSTEIN, whose funktastic albums Funk or Walk and Never Buy Texas from a Cowboy are still much admired today. Dawn did eventually break away, however, recording and touring with artists such as Ice Cube, Roy Ayers, the GAP Band, and even the Platters. But her best work was not behind her. She decided to put the album out herself on her own independent label. She also expanded her reach by being an early adopter of online forums—where a million plus fans could follow her directly—and entered into indie licensing deals in places like Holland, Germany, France, Japan, China, Thailand, and Sierra Leone. “I ended up selling over a quarter of a million CDs out of my kitchen,” she says, “from a ‘dead' market, supposedly.” If all that weren't impressive enough for a woman in funk, her promotional activity overseas led to a headlining gig (!) at the mammoth North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands alongside Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, and the Yellowjackets. And by the way: Funky Friends is still selling today. “I proved to the naysayers, to corporate record companies in the states that here was a very viable market for the funk,” Dawn surmises proudly. “Actually, it's even bigger today than it was then. That's why I continue on.” In this thoughtful, revealing, and illuminating interview, Dawn promotes the legacy of other fem funk legends, from Malia Franklin to Gail Muldrow, and how they were instrumental in pushing P-Funk to the top of the heap despite not getting the recognition they are still due. She also reveals how the Sly Stone Fam paid more and was better organized than the Clinton camp, and recalls how the late, great Glenn Goins taught her to sing funky lyrics with character. On top of all that, Dawn discusses why her friend James Baker's New Birth was one of the most influential self-contained Black bands in funk history, exciting news about her plans to finally put out certain unreleased material, and the importance of her African-Indigenous-European lineage.Produced & Hosted by Ace AlanExecutive Producer Scott Sheppardw/ Content Produced by Dawn SilvaWebsite & Graphics by 3chards Recorded & Filmed @Different Fur Studios, San FranciscoEngineered by Grace Coleman Video shot by Cedric Letsch w/ Jarrett Rogers Video & Sound Editing + Graphics by Nick “WAES” Carden for Off Hand Records, OaklandIntro song “Inertia” by Ace Alan (feat. Line Up : Tiwayo, guitare-voix.

Con Schirfrin, grabó Two Argentinians in Paris (1955).

Ciao a tutte e a tutti.
buon ascolto!

It was great to re-connect with Dave at his home in south-east London, UK. After a long British summer, Dave found himself not only in the second lockdown but to boot it was raining - I wonder if it was sunny would he have spoken to me in his garden with a great British beer in-hand! Our chat was insightful and great fun. Amongst many achievements Dave has been the featured bassist on 7 double platinum-selling albums - so we could have spoken for hours! Below is a shortened - extract of Dave's extensive professional experience - which I encourage you to read and visit his website and social media channels.  Since joining Jools Holland and His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra in 1991, Dave Swift has established himself as one of the UK's finest, high-profile bass players. In his 30+ year career makes for an impressive portfolio, playing with renowned artists such as George Benson, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton and Paul Simon. This list of famous names continues on and on... Dave has performed at many prestigious events including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Dubai International Jazz Festival, Blue Note Tokyo, Amnesty International, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Glastonbury Music Festival, and a G8 Conference for world leaders, which included former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and President Bill Clinton. Additional performances include the Millennium Night celebration at the Millennium Dome for Her Majesty the Queen and a sell-out concert at the Sydney Opera House during their 2008 tour of Australia and New Zealand. Dave Swift has been the in-house bassist for Chris Evans's primetime Saturday night TV show, Don't Forget Your Toothbrush, and Name That Tune on Channel 5. Since their inception, Dave Swift has performed on both the BBC TV show, Later…with Jools Holland, and the Jools Holland Show on BBC Radio 2. Where there is music, there is Dave Swift; he's recorded on many British movie soundtracks, which include: Secret Friends (Dennis Potter), MILK (Dawn French), Kevin and Perry Go Large (Harry Enfield & Cathy Burke), and Hunting Venus (Martin Clunes). More recently he recorded the soundtrack for the period drama Me & Orson Welles, starring Zac Efron, Christian McKay and Claire Danes. Stephen Gordon's bio "I fell in love with all the sounds I heard as a child, so I pursued them" says Drummer/Pianist/Composer STEPHEN GORDON of Charlotte, N.C. - "Rather it was Gospel music at church, Funk and Motown with my Dad, Rock and Metal with my friends, Swing or European Classical literature with my peers and colleagues - I did it all." From the age of 4 years old, it became apparent that young Stephen would emerge into the world bringing forth sound, art, visual perspectives and living melodies to all that he pursued. Through the piano, taking lessons from the age of 5 with many teachers of different perspectives at the guidance of his parents and family, Stephen began playing the trumpet at age 12, which ventured into all brass, woodwinds, and eventually the drums and percussion. "They wanted to expand the Mass Choir at church, so my Dad and I became the rhythm section - That will always be my favorite rhythm section: Me and my Dad." From traditional and contemporary Gospel music, Stephen began sitting in and eventually gigging around Charlotte as a drummer and a keyboardist. "It was the Swing that I heard that I wanted to pursue. When I saw Terence Blanchard Sextet live at 15 years old, I said - Yeah, that's what I want to do; Swing." This path would lead Stephen to graduate high school from Northwest School of The Arts in Charlotte, N.C. and pursue touring and traveling internationally/nationally. "I got so many opportunities to travel with the choir, that when it came to gigging and touring with bands and my friends, I didn't see a difference; I was still going after that sound." These opportunities would lead to Stephen traveling and living in many different places and playing with some of the musicians and educators pushing the forefront of this music - pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., drummer Mike Clark, organist Joey DeFrancesco, trombonist Wayne Henderson, trombonist Fred Wesley, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., percussionist Bill Summers, drummer/vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Aaron Goldberg, trumpeter Bobby Shew, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Raymond Williams, Sr., bassist Roland Guerin, Poet Abidune Olyewole (The Last Poets), trombonist Tyrone Jefferson - to name a few. Stephen has performed in venues such as Tchaichovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, The National Concert Hall in Taipei City, Taiwan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, The Kursk Philharmonia in Kursk, Russia, Lincoln Center in New York, New York, Ronnie Scott's in London, England, C Venues in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York, New York, Blues Alley in DC, Babylon in Istanbul, Turkey, The North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, and many other great venues across the world. Beside playing and touring, recording and teaching have been prospects for Stephen to share in his talents and learn and grow as a musician and as a person. As Stephen resides in Charlotte, N.C., you may catch him all over the world on any given day, swinging and grooving. For all info, check out www.stephengordonmusic.com, as well as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram!

Daniel Johnston bookends our show today. A singer-songwriter widely regarded as a significant figure in alternative music scenes. Much of Daniel Johnston's catalogue is home recorded and often cited as being "childlike". In the show, Richard talks of his personal experiences with family members and Daniel but sadly this episode in his life has long since been over. We discussed in the show that Kurt Cobain wore a t-shirt with artwork from Daniel's Yip/Jump Music album. This is actually incorrect. Kurt wore a t-shirt depicting artwork from Johnston's Hi, How Are You? LP but cited Yip/Jump Music as one of his favourite records of 1993. This proved to be a hell of a recommendation. Hence there ensued a bidding war between record labels to sign him. Despite Daniel being resident in a mental hospital at that time. Plagued by mental health issues He has suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder all his life. Daniel had a psychotic episode after appearing at a music festival in 1990 whilst being flown back to West Virginia by his father Bill (a former USAF pilot) in his 2 seater plane. He believed he was Casper the Friendly Ghost and removed the keys from the plane's ignition and threw them outside. Miraculously Bill managed to crash land the plane in a densely wooded area. Both sustained only minor injuries. The incident completely destroyed the plane. Daniel Johnston was involuntarily admitted to mental hospital again after the incident. Further, in his career, Daniel was the subject of a Sundance Film Festival Director's Award winning film (2005) The Devil and Daniel Johnston. The highly praised film collates much of Daniel's vast output. It proved to inspire more interest in Daniel's work. In 2012 he published his comic book Space Ducks - An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness which apparently has a linked iOs app which we have been spectacularly unable to find. Daniel retired from performing live in 2017. Apple used his song The Story of an Artist in a TV commercial in 2018. Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine What a rich story for such a young man. As Tobin mentioned in the show, Benjamin was homeless in Paris by the time he was leaving his teens. As a result of performing music on the streets he became something of a cult figure in the Parisian music scene. He composed and wrote during the day and performed in the evening. Because of this, he managed to stay out of trouble. He was eventually spotted by an agent and a meeting was set up for the following day. Before signing a major deal, Clementine was working with a French tour agent and the independent label set up through Lionel Bensemoun (a French business mogul) which enabled Clementine to record his music. He was booked for some major festivals, the Montreaux Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Eurosonic Festival, the latter of which he was billed as one of the highlights. As a result of these performances, Clementine was billed for the 2013 North Sea Jazz Festival but failed to turn up. He was thrown off a train for failing to have a valid ticket, something he attributed to not being paid by his agent. Penniless he began the 45km walk to Rotterdam to perform, which eventually took him 10 hours, thus missing his stage appearance. He arrived at his destination with bare feet and bleeding toes. Regardless of this setback, he received an invite to play at the festival in 2015.

My guest today is singer/songwriter/guitarist and my friend, Madeleine Peyroux. Known for her sultry, retro vocal style and phrasing, Madeleine is an internationally known jazz and blues artist having headlined some of the biggest jazz festivals around the world -from Europe to Japan- and all points in between. (As an on and off member of her band for the past 10 years, I got to play at a ton of them with her-  Hollywood Bowl, Hammersmith Apollo in London, The Beacon in NYC, North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands and the list goes on………lots of great memories-  Her biography is well known but I'll briefly recap here- born in Athens, GA, then moved to NYC as a teenager, then to Paris where she began life as a street musician and spent most of her formative years developing her craft on the streets, even living homeless for a while. Fast forward to today 8 solo records later and still going strong, world tours, several soundtracks (and even a Docker's commercial) which brings us to this fine August day in NYC. For me as a guitarist, having the great experience of working with Madeleine and touring all over the world means we've shared a lot of stages and traveled many miles together. Which also means stories- and laughs- and lots of them!  On a nice hot day in August I took the subway over to her apt in Brooklyn. We chatted for a brief moment and then just turned the mics on and let it roll. What you hear is what you get- windows open for fresh air so you'll hear the kids playing in the park across the street!       In this interview we talk about the use of space in music- (how less is more), early influences, busking on the streets of Paris, guitars, writing songs with Bill Wyman, Walter Becker, crazy true stories from the road and much more!   Ok, follow me walking up the stairs and into Madi's apt. I sit down and she picks up her beloved Martin guitar and we spend a minute trying to figure out what to play. Eventually we figure it out….Hope you enjoy! We're featuring an interview with bassist Larry Gray on this week's episode.  Larry's multi-instrumental path has taken him through performance on guitar, flute, cello, and piano in addition to bass.  Larry is in high demand as a jazz bassist in Chicago, performing regularly for decades at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, and he teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Enjoy! About Larry Born on Chicago’s south side, Larry Gray is considered by many to be one of jazz music’s finest double bassists. His impressive versatility and uncommon musical curiosity keep him in demand as both a leader and sideman. Larry began his musical studies at the age of five when his father brought home an accordion and introduced him to his first teacher. Invigorated by this study, Larry added the guitar to his arsenal and studied piano seriously for many years thereafter. It was not until he was in his twenties that he decided to switch to the double bass. Larry went on to study classical music extensively, eventually adding the cello to his long list of loved instruments. His principal teachers were Joseph Guastafeste, longtime principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Karl Fruh, a highly regarded soloist and teacher. Under Mr. Fruh's guidance, he received bachelors and masters degrees in cello performance from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. Throughout his long and varied career, Larry has worked with numerous exceptional artists and jazz legends, including McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Danilo Perez, Branford Marsalis, Benny Green, Freddy Cole, Benny Golson, Steve Turre, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Fortune, Ira Sullivan, Junior Mance, David "Fathead" Newman, Willie Pickens, Ann Hampton Callaway, Charles McPherson, Antonio Hart, Jackie McLean, Sonny Stitt, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Al Cohn, Randy Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Kurt Elling, Eric Alexander, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Wilbur Campbell, Eddie Harris, and Les McCann. In addition, he has collaborated with guitarists Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, and Tal Farlow, as well trumpeters Donald Byrd, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Tom Harrell, among others. Larry continues to tour extensively, performing at jazz festivals and clubs around the globe, including the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Havana Jazz Festival, Rio Sao Paulo Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, ECM Festival in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, the Poznan Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Montreaux Detroit Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Village Vanguard, Blue Note (New York and Tokyo), Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, with such jazz luminaries as Marian McPartland, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Barry Harris, Dorothy Donegan, Monty Alexander, Frank Wess, Joe Williams, Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, Kenny Drew Jr., and most recently, Ramsey Lewis. As a classical musician, Larry played several seasons with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, including a year as principal bass. He worked on many occasions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under master conductors Erich Leinsdorf, Rafeal Kubelik, Carlo Maria Guilini, and Sir George Solti. He also was the featured double bassist with Lyric Opera for the world premiere of the opera Amistad. Larry is an arranger and composer whose work has been widely recognized as uniquely melodic and exceptionally refined. His discography includes 1,2, 3,..., on Chicago Sessions, the solo bass record, Gravity, One Look, and Solo + Quartet, all on Graywater Records, as well as the Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson collaborations Meant to Be and Simple Pleasures. He can also be heard on the Ramsey Lewis recordings Appassionata, Time Flies, and With One Voice, and the latest release, Songs From the Heart. Larry also arranged and produced the critically acclaimed CD, Django by Ferro. Furthermore, Larry has recorded with Chet Baker, Curtis Fuller, Ira Sullivan, Lin Halliday, Willie Pickens, Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Bunky Green, Bob Moses, Irish flute-whistle virtuoso Laurence Nugent, pop sensations Linda Eder, Dennis DeYoung, and Peter Cetera, and songwriter Michael Smith, among others. In addition, Larry's original composition for double bass and guitar, Five Movements, was commissioned and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble at Symphony Center in Chicago. Most recently, Larry has composed two commissioned works for the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Tribute to the Bass Masters Suite was premiered at the Poznan Festival in Poland in 2008 to much acclaim. A second work, String Thing, was first presented in Chicago in October 2010 as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago Jazz in Chicago series. Larry also completed a collaborative project with bassists Rufus Reid and Joseph Guastafeste that was premiered in March of 2011 in Chicago. Larry Gray is also a dedicated teacher and is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her first album ‘Elle’ brought her to several countries, among them Thailand, Turkey, Estonia and China and earned her a prestigious Edison nomination.
