After I post a Countermelody episode on a cherished singer, my relationship with these artists continues: one of those manifestataions is that I never stop seeking out rare and unusual recordings featuring those singers. This results in a grab-bag of fascinating and often obscure material that is simply too good not to share with my listeners. Today I present you with the second episode of such genre, which I have collectively dubbed “Rescue Mission.” On this episode I feature singers you've heard on the podcast over the course of the past several weeks and months, including, among many others, Janet Baker, Oralia Domínguez, Eugene Holmes, Ellabelle Davis, Gilda Cruz-Romo, Benjamin Luxon, Mara Coleva, Hugo Hasslo, Margaret Marshall, Gloria Davy, and Mady Mesplé, performing work by Handel, Verdi, Weill, Bach, Brahms, Boito, and Mozart. The episode concludes with Eleanor Steber (because, as I affirmed laast week, you can never have enough of her), in a 1949 performance of “Ah, Perfido!” that will have you picking your dislocated jaw up off the floor. Also expect shout-outs to friends of the podcast, old and new, as well as a certain amount of political snippiness! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

Dando início à Segunda temporada do LAP Editor's Choice, nos juntamos ao renomado cientista político marxista e teórico Armando Boito para discutir seu recém-lançado livro "Reform and Political Crisis in Brazil: Class Conflicts in Workers' Party Governments and the Rise of Bolsonaro Neo-fascism" (disponível em inglês). This week on the Arts to Heart Podcast, our host Charuka Arora has an insightful conversation with Richa Maheshwari, who is a designer on a mission to bring back the arts and crafts that are fading due to the advent of fast fashion. Richa has been in the software services industry by profession, where she worked as a product manager for a German company for almost 16 years. As COVID hit, much like everyone else, Richa took a break to spend more time at home. This was her chance to restart and explore, and she took it. After going to an office for so many years, Richa longed to be on the ground where she could do something much more substantial and tangible, and that is when she was able to connect to an international labor organization which marked the beginning of her life with traditional crafts.  As a child, Richa was always interested in stories that were rich in culture, and now she has the opportunity to tell those stories to the rest of the world in an innovative way. With its textile legacy, Odisha has many stories to tell, and so Richa decided to direct her energy towards uplifting the local artisan community in a way that helped the artists as well as introducing their craft to the world. For Richa, it is very much about the “ability to build narratives in a fun way so that the audience is able to receive it simply”. As she built her brand, Boito, Richa has had many things to learn and unlearn. From forming trustworthy relationships with the local community to finding a balance where their culture and traditions can be shared with the rest of the world, Richa has come a long way. She has opened doors for other artists who dream of utilizing their craft in a way that doesn't succumb to the fast fashion industry. So, tune in to this week's podcast to listen to Richa and Charuka talk about the world of fashion and why it's important for us as a society to not lose touch with our roots. In pop culture, beekeepers are generally portrayed as quirky side characters. There are exceptions, of course. The movie Ullee's Gold with Peter Fonda, comes to mind, as does The Secret Life of Bees, first as a novel and later a movie. Now, there is a new book where both bees and an entomologist are the subject, victim, and heros! Today, author and screenwriter, David Boito, join Jeff and Becky to talk about his newly released book, Bee Conspiracy. David talks about why he chose the characters he did and why he set bees as both the focus of the heros and the villan of his novel. Verdi's last opera, Falstaff, was his first comic opera in over 50 years. Verdi and his librettist, Boito, kept the composition secret since Verdi was somewhat less comfortable with comic opera, and he wanted to have the option of canceling the production—even after the dress rehearsal. Boito's libretto has its basis in Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor with additional material from Henry VI, parts 1 and 2. The premiere at the Teatro alla Scala was a triumph, but, as always, Verdi continued to make adjustments to the score for both the Rome and Paris premieres; these changes were incorporated into the final version of the score.

Mefistofele is an opera in a prologue and five acts, then reduced to four and an epilogue, written and composed by Arrigo Boito inspired by Goethe's Faust. The first performance took place in Milan, at the Teatro alla Scala, on March 5, 1868, conducted by Boito himself, but it ended in a sensational fiasco, perhaps due, in addition to the excessive length of the work, to the strongly ideological content of some episodes, then suppressed. The work was then reduced and reworked by the author, who among other things transposed the part of Faust for tenor, originally for baritone; moreover, the figure of Margaret assumes central importance in the context of Faust's saving drama. The new version was successfully staged at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna on October 4, 1875, conducted by Emilio Usiglio in the presence of the composer.Purchase the music (without talk) at:http://www.classicalsavings.com/store/p1403/Boito%3A_Mephistophele.htmlYour purchase helps to support our show! Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by La Musica International Chamber Music Festival and Uber. @khedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#LaMusicaFestival #CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber Please consider supporting our show, thank you!http://www.classicalsavings.com/donate.html staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com

This classic tale of a man who makes an ill-advised deal with the devil has inspired many operas over the years, including Busoni’s Doktor Faust, Boito’s Mefistofele, and Lutz’s Faust et Marguerite. But no operatic version of this legend has come close to the instant success and enduring popularity of Gounod’s version. Today we have a pre-performance lecture from our “Talking about Opera” archives, featuring lecturer and writer Father Owen Lee, giving us an in-depth history and analysis of the music and creative inspiration behind this legendary work.

I'm so pleased to introduce my guest today: Professor of Music Theory and History, Professor Nicholas Baragwanath! His book “The Italian Traditions and Puccini”, a major study of compositional theory and practice in 19th-century Italy, was published in 2011 by Indiana University Press. It surveys the once commonplace fundamentals, methods, and formulas that were taught at Italian music conservatories, and explores their significance for composition through case studies from Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti to Verdi, Boito, and Puccini. His upcoming book, "The Solfeggio Tradition: A Forgotten art of melody in the long 18th century", will be released in the summer of 2020, published by Oxford University Press. ----- 1:17 What is your musical background? 1:35 What was your area of research in academia? 2:32 How did you end up researching solfeggio? 4:14 Authentic partimenti realizations tend to be rare but are solfeggi manuscripts complete by comparison? 5:16 Are there historical treatises on how to do Solfeggio? 8:03 Did they use “Ut” instead of “Do”? 9:49 What do you mean by 84, aren't there just 7 clefs? 10:23 Would someone with absolute or perfect be bothered by this Italian solfeggio? 11:24 So does Italian solfeggio have similarities to moveable do? 11:36 If hexachord means six notes, where did that 7th note Si or Ti come from? 13:31 Are modes (like Aeolian or Dorian) relevant to solfeggio? 14:44 What are key differences between 17th, 18th and 19th century solfeggi? 16:20 Is solfeggio always tied with a bass? 16:59 How did students learn counterpoint and composition through solfeggio? 19:34 Talking about Solfèges d'Italie and how a single syllable could yield multiple notes of different pitches 20:49 Adding extra notes to Do and Re 22:05 Did the Neapolitan students study singing for 3 years or 6 years? 22:19 What is the difference between basic Lettura or note reading and l'arte del canto: Solfeggio cantato meant with graces? 25:32 Would these Neapolitan students be familiar with Music Schema like the Prinner? 26:28 Would you have to look at a lot of solfeggi examples to build that vocabulary? 27:21 What was the trickiest thing for you to learn, when you started doing solfeggio? 30:09 How should one start solfeggio training from the very beginning? 33:41 As a trained pianist, do you look at your old music scores differently with this solfeggio insight? 35:18 What's the difference in style between the strict style solfeggi and the more popular style solfeggi? 36:37 Did you have choral training in your musical background? 37:05 What was the contemporary reception of Italian solfeggio? 38:12 Have you collaborated with people in historical performance regarding your research in solfeggio? 39:56 To prepare for your book, what should interested musicians and students practice and have prepared? 41:03 Going back to perfect pitch, would pitch matching be erased if someone learned the italian solfeggio way because of the similarities to moveable do? 42:06 Did they use “Do” or the letter “C”? 42:48 It's a very moveable-doish sort of perception? 43:10 Is Italian solfeggio robust enough a system to tackle “progressive” 19th and 20th century music? 44:48 How does solfeggio tackle dissonance? 46:17 How did solfeggio die out? 47:43 You seem to have cracked the mastery of solfeggio.. are there more mysteries left to be uncovered? 50:46 What does it mean: singing the wrong pitch to the right syllable? 51:46 What musical tools and skills did you “discard”, as you've evolved as a musician? 53:38 Upcoming events 54:33 Wrapping Up

Frequent Verdi librettist Arrigo Boito wrote only one complete opera in his lifetime, a take on "Faust", entitled MEFISTOFELE. Sacrilegious, mystical, and captivatingly beautiful, Boito’s opera recounts the tale from the devil’s perspective, sung this season at the Met by bass-baritone Christian Van Horn. In this episode, Juilliard faculty member and Guild lecturer John J.H. Muller guides us through Boito’s work in this comprehensive pre-performance talk.

A tribute to Jerome Hines

A tribute to Jerome Hines, a great artist. The selections are anounced and biographical material is included. (73 min.) The American Jerome A. Hines (November 8, 1921 – February 4, 2003) was a well-known basso opera singer who was associated with the Metropolitan Opera for many years. His height (6ft 6 inches, or 2m), stage presence and stentorian voice made him ideal for such roles as Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Mephistopheles in Faust, Ramfis in Aida, the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos, the title role of Boris Godunov and King Mark in Tristan und Isolde. Hines was born Jerome Albert Link Heinz in Hollywood, California. He studied mathematics and chemistry at the University of California, while also taking vocal lessons. Hines made his operatic debut at the San Francisco Opera in 1941, singing Monterone in Rigoletto. He changed his surname to Hines at the suggestion of his manager Sol Hurok to avoid the anti-German feelings prevalent during World War II.[1] In 1946, Hines made his debut at the Met as the Sergeant in Boris Godunov. He went on to sing forty-one seasons there, longer than any other Met singer, encompassing forty-five roles in thirty-nine operas. During this time he pursued further voice studies with Samuel Margolis and Vladimir Rosing. In 1953, Hines made his European debut with Glyndebourne as Nick Shadow at the Edinburgh Festival in the first British performances of Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. In 1958, he made his debut at La Scala in the title role of Handel's Hercules. From 1958 to 1963, he sang at Bayreuth in the roles of Gurnemanz, King Mark and Wotan. In 1961, he first appeared at the San Carlo in the title role of Boito's Mefistofele. In 1962, he sang Boris Godunov at the Bolshoi in Moscow, famously for Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev on the eve of the resolution of the Cuban Missile crisis. Hines turned to coaching later in his career, founding the Opera-Music Theatre Institute of New Jersey in 1987, but he continued performing virtually until the end of his life; among his last appearances was a concert performance as the Grand Inquisitor with the Boston Bel Canto Opera in 2001 at the age of 79. A born-again Christian and member of the Salvation Army, Hines composed an opera on the life of Jesus, I Am the Way. He sang the role of Jesus at the Met in 1968 and performed the work many times around the world. Hines wrote a memoir, This is My Story, This is My Song (1969) ISBN 0-8007-0313-8, and two books on singing, The Four Voices of Man (1997) ISBN 0-87910-099-0 and Great Singers on Great Singing (1982) ISBN 0-87910-025-7. Hines died of undisclosed causes in 2003, at age 81 at a Manhattan hospital. Hines was married to the soprano Lucia Evangelista from 1952 until her death from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2000. They had four children, David, Andrew, John and Russell. For most of his life, he lived in South Orange, New Jersey. [edit] External links
