For this episode, I sat down with the young lion Kahlil Childs, an alto saxophonist and multi-reedist who leads his own quartet here in San Diego. At 15, he has already made a name for himself on the local jazz scene. We met to discuss why jazz was the path he discerned for himself, and how learning about jazz legends has inspired him to continue his journey. We talk about what it's like to study under jazz master and alto saxophonist Charles McPherson and Grammy Award-winning producer and U.C. San Diego professor Kamau Kenyatta. He shares his experience of growing up with two present, educated, socially conscious parents and how that has influenced him. He names his current favorite jazz artists and describes the experience of playing with some of his heroes. Lastly we discuss his quartet and where he sees himself in the future, most likely attending a jazz conservatory on the East Coast. https://kahlilchilds.com

Cases of COVID-19 are once again on the rise in San Diego County. On Tuesday, the county reported more than 3,600 new cases, the highest number of new cases in a single day since last winter. Plus, a new energy storage project is rolling out across the county, with the first two sites scheduled to break ground within the next month. Then, earlier this year KPBS met a group of women living at a retirement home in Escondido, who are lightening the pain associated with mastectomy one loving stitch at a time. In July, KPBS reporter John Carroll took us to an animal sanctuary in San Diego County that is trying to bring awareness to the illegal, multi-billion dollar trade in exotic animals. And in current events, Starla Lewis, a professor of Black Studies at Mesa College and SDSU, talks about the meaning of Kwanzaa and its origin. Lastly, KPBS looks back at an interview with Charles McPherson, one of jazz's most prolific saxophonists.

The Bastards look at four albums taking paths less travelled, approaches rarely attempted, and pianos (in the case of Sun Ra at least) untuned.  Three 2021 releases are featured and we go way back to 1966 for a movie tie-in album that went right for jazz fans and terribly wrong the the MGM employee writing the linear notes.   Pop matters this time isn't pop at all but Mike's in-depth discussion of Charles McPherson's birthday concert, so stay tuned.  Adi Meyerson – I WANT TO SING MY HEART OUT IN PRAISE OF LIFE;  Altoizm – ALTOIZM; Rachel Eckroth – THE GARDEN; Walt Dickerson – IMPRESSIONS OF PATCH OF BLUE.

Alto Saxophone Master Charles McPherson: "McPherson's Mood"

Alto saxophonist Charles McPherson is truly one of the living masters of the alto saxophone and at age 77 is very active, playing, traveling, teaching, recording, composing. McPherson has been on the Jazz forefront since the late 50s, first with the volcanic bassist Charles Mingus on and off for more than 15 years. Pianist Barry Harris was one of McPherson's mentors from his early days in Detroit and McPherson and Harris have played together and recorded many times since then. This album called "McPherson's Mood" is one of McPherson's personal favourite recordings and one that he enjoys listening to. Charles is the sole horn and his elegant phrasing, great tone and his lyricism is fully evident. McPherson took the lyrical and melodic side of Charlie Parker's concept into his own wonderful style. McPherson is accompanied by his early mentor Barry Harris on piano, the great Buster Williams on bass and the talented and tasteful Roy Brooks on drums. Six tunes are featured here with 4 by McPherson and two standards beginning with the familiar Cole Porter tune, "I Get A Kick Out of You" and the contemporary standard, "Mon Cherie Amour" made famous by Stevie Wonder. All in all a fine portrait of a great living Jazz Master: Charles McPherson.
