With the FSU's support, the Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation – Rick Prior – is suing his own union after he was ‘cancelled' for suggesting frontline officers are increasingly nervous about challenging people from ethnic minorities whom they suspect of breaking the law, given the spate of internal investigations into officers accused of being ‘racist'. Following an interview on GB News in October 2024 which led to his suspension, Mr Prior was also locked out of his emails and IT system and told he wasn't allowed to speak to the press or comment on social media. As reported in The Telegraph and with the backing of the FSU, Mr Prior is taking legal action against the Police Federation of England & Wales and you can support Rick here. In other news, on Monday 17th March, the Online Safety Act's latest phase of duties came into force. They require social media platforms – on pain of massive fines – to identify and remove illegal content. Sites must complete risk assessments detailing how they deal with illegal material and implement safety measures to deal with the risk. The Telegraph reports that dozens of small internet forums have already blocked British users or shut down as new online safety laws come into effect, with one comparing the new regime to a British version of China's “great firewall”. Interestingly, the importance of internet forums and online anonymity was raised at our ‘From Faith to Faithless' event last week. When labouring under the pervasive influence of a ‘high control' religion, anonymous online communication becomes an essential ingredient for those taking their first tentative steps back to the wider world.   ‘That's Debatable!'  is edited by Jason Clift.

When we see our lives only as a linear path from here to there, A to B, we put ourselves at the risk of endless comparison between 'where I am' and 'what might have been'. It's a comparison that does not often support us well, and it fuels an orientation that values youth ('I still have time to get to where I'm supposed to be') over age ('time is running out'). There is another way to look - to see that in many ways, alongside our achievements and disappointments, life is a circling. We move in a circular way, carrying, as Nick Cave writes, "all our needs and yearnings and hurts along with us, and all the people who have poured themselves into us and made us what we are". It is in It is "this circular reciprocal motion that grows more essential and affirming and necessary with each turn".  This week's Turning Towards Life is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. N: Stumbling forward is a beautiful way of putting it Seán, but I wonder if the notion of forwardness is correct.  Perhaps what I mean to say is that although we feel we are moving in a forward direction, in my estimation we are forever moving in a circular way, with all the things we love and remember in tow, and carrying all our needs and yearnings and hurts along with us, and all the people who have poured themselves into us and made us what we are, and all the ghosts who travel with us.  It's like we are running towards God, but that God's love is also the wind that it pushing us on, as both the impetus and the destination, and it resides in both the living and the dead.  Around and around we go, encountering the same things, again and again, but within this movement things happen that change us, annihilate us, shift our relationship to the world.  It is this circular reciprocal motion that grows more essential and affirming and necessary with each turn. Stepping Stones 2 Peter 3:18 #RTTBROS #Nightlight   Stepping Stones to Spiritual Strength "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen." - 2 Peter 3:18 KJV Just as you've embarked on a journey of physical fitness by taking small yet significant steps, spiritual fitness too can be nurtured through gradual and consistent efforts. The essence of growth, both physical and spiritual, lies in the willingness to start, no matter how small the beginning may seem.     Here a Little, There a Little In the realm of the spirit, every act of faith, every moment spent in prayer, and every scripture pondered upon contributes to our spiritual endurance. Like the body that strengthens with each climb up the stairs, our spirit fortifies with every truth we embrace and apply.    Line Upon Line Our spiritual journey is a progression, not a sprint. It's about adding layer upon layer of understanding, precept upon precept, building a robust foundation of faith that can withstand the winds of doubt and the storms of life.     From Faith to Faith With each step forward, our faith deepens. What begins as a mustard seed of belief blossoms into a tree of trust, rooted in the knowledge of God's grace and love. It's a transformative process that turns the smallest of starts into a lifetime of spiritual fitness.     The Starting Point Remember, the smallest act in faith is infinitely more potent than the grandest intention. It's the starting point that sets the course for a journey of a thousand miles. So, take heart in the knowledge that something, indeed, is better than nothing, for it marks the beginning of growth. https://linktr.ee/rttbros   Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out. https://linktr.ee/rttbros

One test of whether or not you understand something is if you can explain it in your own words. It's not only a helpful exercise to engage with the material, it's strategic for locating the *point*. If we assume that what we're reading is organized in order to reveal truth — which we can assume with the epistle of Paul to the Romans — then we expect that all the parts build into a whole. I keep being not just surprised, but disappointed when I reach the last verse of a Bible book in a commentary and the next page is: Appendix A, or Topical Index, or Acknowledgments. What about the *synthesis*? What about the *point*? We spent all the time looking at the trees on our way through the orchard, and some of the trees had great fruit. Now that we can look back, how far did we come? To me, not just a review but a rejoicing review is in order. There were two phrases that stood out to me as summaries of the two main divisions of the letter. Those phrases stood out to me enough that I used them as my email signature in two different years. The first captures the doctrinal (though there's truth for practice) in chapters 1-11, and the second captures the practical (though there's principles of truth) in chapters 12-16. # From Faith to FaithI get this from Romans 1:16-17, arguable Paul's own summary of the theme of the epistle. In the gospel is revealed the righteousness of God **from faith to faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith.' (NASB)** - We cannot be saved without faith; the gospel is for all the believing ones.- We cannot please God without faith; the gospel argues against our righteous works. - We cannot resist sin without faith; the gospel forgives and the Spirit frees us from sin's power and fulfills righteousness.- We cannot endure suffering without faith; the gospel gives us hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. While one day we won't need faith any longer, when we see face to face, we cannot live as Christians without it for even one day in these bodies. Faith is the instrument of justification, and this undid Rome *twice*, first the paganism of the Roman Empire and then again the popery of the Roman Catholic world. In the 16th century the dominant worldview, which came from the teaching and worldview of the dominant worship, was that men could only be righteous through a combination of faith *plus*: faith plus their own works, faith plus some saint's extra good works, faith plus money that purchased a status, faith plus visiting/touching/kissing some special artifact. To be righteous by faith *alone*, that led to the single greatest church split ever, and we are still blessed by that proper division 500 years later. That said, faith apart from works is not really our fight. We wear t-shirts and drink out of coffee mugs with *sola fide* printed on them. That doesn't always mean we live from faith to faith. Our fight is more faith vs sight, faith except for all the times we think we can fix it ourselves. We are people who get things done, who make things happen, who take responsibility. We are realists, pragmatists, “modern” men of math and material things. If there's a problem, we'll solve it. We've got bullet points, after all. And then we see the second half of Romans 1 played out in front of us, and we thought cultural degradation should be done by now. More bullet points! But consider the placement of Romans 1:18-32. We say that it shows the *need* for the gospel, and it does. Men do not meet God's standard for righteousness, in unrighteousness and ungodliness they suppress the truth, so they are guilty and need the gospel. So true. But who did Paul write the explanation *for*? It wasn't an evangelistic tract for the pagans per se, it was encouragement for those who needed to live from faith to faith. He wrote about God's wrath so that the Christians in Rome would know what to tell their sinning neighbors, but also so that the Christians in Rome would not lose heart. Our culture is schizo. Unbelievers want more and more material things, we want physical comfort and prosperity, and we figure all that is possible if we follow the right 7 Steps to Success. But when it comes to moral things, the same unbelievers think that's up for grabs, think and act and be whatever you want, and we figure any of it is possible, just follow your feelings. What both those perspectives share is not *not* faith, certainly not saving faith, but an alternative faith, just that we don't call it "faith" because it seems like we have some sort of control. If there is anything that Romans teaches us, beloved, it is that men are not in control. As Christians we cannot even control our own flesh (think the last half of Romans 7); men are slaves to sin or slaves of righteousness, but they are not their own. It is God's will, by His eternal command, that the gospel go out, that faith would come by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ. That faith confesses that *Jesus is Lord*. At what point in your Christian life do you not need to live in light of that reality? We do not enter the blessings by faith and then fix the rest ourselves. It's all by faith.# Don't Hold BackThis is from part of a verse in Romans 12:11: **Do not be slothful in zeal**. Three times Paul references zeal in Romans, and all three assume that there are ways to mess up zeal.Paul said in Romans 10:2 about the Jews that "they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge." In Romans 12:8 he exhorted those with various gifts in the body and included, "the one who leads, with zeal," like it's possible to go out first halfheartedly. And it is. Then in Romans 12:11, **Do not be slothful in zeal**.I think that the first line actually sets the tone for 11-13, because "being fervent, serving, rejoicing, persevering, being devoted, contributing, and seeking" are all participles that hang on it. To be **slothful** is to be reluctant, to lag behind, to hold back. Brothers, Jesus is Lord, don't hold back. # Conclusion*We are individually offerings*, having received mercy by gospel, so Romans 12:1. > I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. We've been called to altar living. You are not allowed to hold back some part of your life, some time of the day, some percent of your will. “To be freed from only one sin—that's just our own agenda." (—John Owen, _The Mortification of Sin_). The mercies of God move all our bodies up onto the altar. *We are collectively an offering*, being made by the gospel: Romans 15:16. Paul was> a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. The gospel is the power of God to make an offering of offerings, one made up of many, just like the singular body of Christ has a plurality of members. How then do we believe the gospel? Like offerings to God.We are part of the fulness of the Gentiles (Romans 11:25), so that “the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy” (Romans 15:9). God has grafted us into blessings, and His blessings make us jealousable before men and pleasing to Himself. Because of the gospel we are to be a people of faith, believing in God and confessing Jesus as Lord and being conformed to the image of God's Son. By His will we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. By His love we have reconciliation and peace with God. By His command the gospel has been known to us to bring about the obedience of faith among all peoples. By His mercies we present our bodies as living sacrifices. What altar blessings! What gift. What depth of riches and wisdom and knowledge of God. To Him be glory forever!----------## ChargeChristian, living from faith to faith is not a hobby or side-hustle, it is your life calling. It is your identity; you are "the ones believing." Keep on believing in your heart the word of faith about the Lord of all. He bestows His riches and joy and peace on all who believe in Him. ## Benediction:> Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!> > “For who has known the mind of the Lord, > or who has been his counselor?” > “Or who has given a gift to him > that he might be repaid?”> > For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33–36 ESV)

How true that is—and this year, Westminster Seminary California's Annual Conference will be focusing on faith specifically, exploring various facets of doctrine and life as they touch upon the centrality of faith in the Christian life. Bringing these messages are Westminster's own: Dr. Michael Horton, and Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, and Westminster President Joel Kim. Joining them are faculty Drs. Craig Troxel and Brad Bitner. So why does it seem like we stand up and show out more than showing up and standing out? In this episode, we take a journey back to the garden and begin the process of taking our faithfulness to fruitfulness. The key is not knowledge, but rather relationship. The Gospel is available to everyone. - To EVERYONE who BELIEVES, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 3. The Gospel is a demonstration of the righteousness of God. - For in it the RIGHTEOUSNESS of GOD is revealed. 4. The Gospel is a call to daily live by faith. - From FAITH for FAITH, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith".

# Introduction God is in the righteousness business. What I mean is that He is engaged in an activity for a particular end. His business is not to make money, but to remake mankind. He isn't open for business only on certain days of the week, M-F, or Sunday, but His work goes on around the clock. God is in the business of revealing His righteousness as men receive it by faith and as they embody it by faith. It's a gift business, start to finish, all the way through. It is good news. Romans 1:16-17 provide the thesis statement of the letter. These two verses fit in the flow of his greeting, and in fact are subordinate to the last assertion Paul made in verse 15. There are four “for”s following his comment that he is eager to preach the gospel among them: 1) for he's not ashamed of the gospel, 2) for the gospel is God's power, 3) for in the gospel God's righteousness is revealed, and then 4) for God's wrath is revealed (verse 18). Verse 18 changes the subject, even though it is still offering additional explanation on the previous. Although grammatically verses 16-17 contain subordinate clauses, thematically they contain the superlative climax. This is the center of the evangel, and of the epistle. Paul writes to the Romans because he sees them as part of his calling as the apostle to the Gentiles. Even more, he writes to them to establish a relationship so that perhaps they could be his base of mission to take Christ into Spain and West from there. And, in all this, he writes to them about the gospel of God, the gospel of righteousness, so that they would have a gospel base for Christian living. Here is the obedience of faith, here is blessing, here is bold hope. He had such obedient and blessed boldness, and it came from the gospel. > For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek, for in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. As it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” Here is a three step explanation of his eagerness to preach the gospel. # Eager BECAUSE he's not ashamed of the gospel. This is a well-known statement for many Christians, but that familiarity masks how odd it sounds, at least without some assumptions and context. Paul was eager to come to Rome, eager to encourage and be encouraged by the Christians in Rome, eager to preach the gospel in Rome. Who said anything about him being ashamed? Ashamed about what? Ashamed in what way? When Paul writes about not being **ashamed** he isn't referring to some guilt or moral stain. He's speaking about not being ashamed as not being *fearful*. There are a number of synonyms that help us understand. He's not hesitant to speak about it, not feeling the need to keep it quiet. He wasn't *reluctant* to make it public. And the reason that someone might be reluctant to talk about it is that you anticipate that it might not be appreciated by those you tell. In Paul's case, he had experience. He had experience on *both* sides of the stick. Before he believed in the gospel, when his name was still Saul, Paul was persecuting people who believed this message. He was putting them to death, and doing so in the name of God. He was making martyrs of the gospel of righteousness in, what he thought was, the service of righteousness. He also knew Jesus' teaching about how men would naturally receive the news: they would insult the believers, hate them, treat them with contempt. As Paul was in Corinth when he wrote to the Romans, he knew that the word of the cross was scandalous to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks. As any timeline of Paul's life shows, before writing to the Romans he had already been imprisoned, laughed at, stoned and left for dead. He was not imaging things. Being ashamed is not necessarily all or nothing. There are more than two categories: sons of spinelessness or sons of thunder. It's a spectrum. Nor is everyone who is bold doing so for Jesus' name, nor is everyone who is quiet abandoning the faith. But, consider. How tempting is it to keep our faith *private*? It is a personal relationship with Jesus that matters, right? And if our neighbors will let us believe that we want to believe as long as we keep our heads down and our eyes and mouths shut, or if we promise to only speak softly and suggestively, why cause offense? How much modification can you do before realizing that you're protecting *you*? In our great nation we have been given a lot of Christian blessings, whether or not they are currently credited to Christianity. And a number of preachers, and whole movements of churches and Christians, have not been quiet per se, but they've been “sensitive” to how silly some of the claims of Christianity sound. So instead of speaking softly, they soup up the gospel, as in, they help it with good ol' American marketing techniques, howing only the good angles in the best light. How much modification can you do before realizing that you're promoting a variation of the gospel (though, as Paul told the Galatians, there really isn't a different gospel, Galatians 1:6-9)? Paul was determined to speak in public no matter the hell he got. The next “for” explains why he was so bold. # Not ashamed BECAUSE the power of God is in the gospel. In the second half of verse 16 Paul makes his assertion about why he's so confidently non-quiet. It's due to the effectiveness and the extent of the gospel. The gospel is **the power of God to salvation**. The gospel is not the door into power, the gospel *is* the power that opens the door. The gospel effects the end, it does not merely make the end possible. The gospel isn't an argument for going in a different direction, the gospel is the push. The gospel is *potent*, and because it is the power *of God*, it is omni-potent. We would be more reasonably reluctant if all we had was an *offer*, like the arborists going to door to door in your neighborhood offering estimates about what could be done and how much they could do it for. The power is still yours, the homeowner, the customer, even if they have the chainsaws. But the gospel is not offering estimates of the problems in your life with suggestions for what you could do about it. In one sense the gospel is an invitation, but the gospel overcomes (the inevitable) resistance to the offer. You don't need a better life plan, you need **salvation**. As the letter to the Romans continues, we need salvation from God's wrath, from our willful ignorance, from our self-harming sin, from our rebellion, from death. Left to yourself, you would never want or accept the gospel. So those with the gospel can only expect a positive response by God's power. The gospel is a gift that comes with power included so that the elect would open it and accept it and love the Giver. The gift *includes* faith for the called, as faith is both the instrument of receiving salvation and the new view on life. Salvation is for **all the ones believing**. It's a substantival participle, perhaps one of my most favorite grammatical categories. It turns a behavior into a characterization. We are believers, we are the ones who keep on believing. And in God's purposes the believing ones come **to the Jew first and also to the Greek**. It turns out, this is a big deal. It will be worth an entire three-chapter section later in the letter (9-11). There are hints along the way, including at the beginning of chapter 3. There are *blessings* that belong to the Jews, and those blessings are gifts, and those gifts, rightly received, pointed to the gift of Jesus Christ and righteousness *not* through the law. Many Jews rejected their Messiah, but, this was part of God's plan, not the end of the plot. To say that Paul went into synagogues first when he went to a new town is *not* a sufficient explanation for how the Jew/Gentile distinction *and* unity fills this letter. # Power BECAUSE the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel. Verse 17 is not just addition, it is additional explanation. It is not just about the gospel, it is about God's power to salvation in the gospel. God's power is demonstrated as God's righteousness is brought about. As the gift of Jesus brings the gift of preaching brings the gift of believing (Romans 10:14-15) we are seeing the business of God to reveal His own righteousness into human life and history. In His saving work **the righteousness of God is revealed**. The revelation is the verb form of *apocalypse*, unveiling, showing. The gift is being unwrapped, the gift is being set forth for all to see. **Righteousness** is a key word in Romans, even though other words are used more frequently. It's *dikaiosune*, “right, righteous, just.” It initially caused Martin Luther fits. Luther had always seen "the righteousness of God" (or “the justice of God”) as an attribute of the sovereign Lord by which He judged sinners--not as an attribute sinners could possess. He described the breakthrough, his “tower experience,” and how his unrelenting study of the historical-grammatical context of that passage brought light to the dark ages: > I greatly longed to understand Paul's epistle to the Romans and nothing stood in the way but that one expression, "the justice of God," because I took it to mean that justice whereby God is just and deals justly in punishing the unjust. My situation was that, although an impeccable monk, I stood before God as a sinner troubled in conscience, and I had no confidence that my merit would assuage him. Therefore I did not love a just and angry God, but rather hated and murmured against him. Yet I clung to the dear Paul and had a great yearning to know what he meant. Night and day I pondered until I saw the connection between the justice of God and the statement that "the just shall live by his faith." Then I grasped that the justice of God is that of righteousness by which through grace and sheer mercy God justifies us through faith. Thereupon I felt myself to be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise. The whole of Scripture took on a new meaning, and whereas before the "justice of God" had filled me with hate, now it became to me inexpressibly sweet in greater love. This passage of Paul became to me a gate to heaven. Reformations of life, of churches, of cultures, come through God's business of making His righteousness known. The righteousness of God being revealed is not only that we are learning a doctrinal point about one of His attributes. We are seeing one of His attributes in action, we are seeing Him share His righteousness with us, **from faith to faith**. I may end up titling not just this sermon with “From Faith to Faith,” but the entire study in Romans. Not just doing the work of evangelist (2 Timothy 4:5), I think my work as a shepherd is all about this. The phrase could be translated, and understood, in a number of ways. *Ek*...*eis*. It means *all* by faith. Faith all the time. Faith is necessary for new life, faith is the *way* of living that life. As it relates to the righteousness of God, we are declared righteous by God through faith alone, not our works. Then, by faith, God begins a transforming work of working righteousness into us and through us, until He eventually glorifies us with a share in Christlike righteousness. According to the law, we have a forensic righteousness, and as we live, we recognize a transformative righteousness. By faith our status is changed, our walk is changed, our future is secured. He reckons us just, He begins to make real His character in us. Righteousness is in the books in heaven, righteousness is worked out in history on earth, and righteousness is guaranteed again for our resurrection in heaven. The great emphasis of *sola fide* as contrasted with any works is certainly hope-filling, burden-lifting, soul-changing. And also, justification by faith alone is not the only part of the gospel. He makes us alive into faith, and then He feeds our faith *to* (more, stronger) faith for living. Paul quotes the Bible (in the Bible) to show that this is God's business. > As it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4) Habakkuk is quoted by Paul to the Galatians and in Hebrews. The word order makes an emphasis. It is less “the righteous by faith” live, and more the righteous “live by faith.” Both are true, but faith ins't finished when it opens the gate. # Conclusion Couldn't we say that the reason Paul wasn't ashamed of the gospel is because he actually believed it? He lived and preached and ministered from faith to faith, and so that others would also live from faith to faith. In Christ we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). God is in the business of recreating men in righteousness from faith to faith. What a gift. ---------- ## Charge Christian, you have been given new life, you live in a different realm and you live on a different basis. You *live by faith*. Living by faith is not a hobby or side-hustle, it is your life calling. It is God's business to make it your life calling. So, keep living by faith in the Son of God who loved you and gave Himself for you. ## Benediction: > For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4–5, ESV)

Episode 083--From Faith to Frustration Life can be frustrating. Just when things are going good, something always happens to throw a wrench in our plans which then casts a dark veil over our futures. It leaves us feeling like life has thrown us a curve ball and we have no recourse, no avenue to go forward, no way to the future we thought we could have. We are just … frustrated. Frustrations come from rehearsing and going over and over again the possibilities scenarios that may happen in the future when something happens in our present. Then we become fixated on the negative prospects that brings. Instead of focusing on our frustrations, we need to step into faith and realize God is still leading us despite what we can see with our eyes.  It can either be frustrating or it can be a great adventure. It all depends on our point of view. It all depends on how much we trust God. It all depends on whether we want what God has next for us or we want only what we can gather in our human strength. Frustration is overcome by believing that God has plans for our good and not our disaster, plans for our future. It’s that hope that we must cling to. It’s knowing He has a bigger dream for us than we ever have thought about.  If you are frustrated and feel out of control about your present and afraid of what may happen in the future if you don’t figure out how to live healthier, please join us in Overcomers Academy.  Overcomers Academy Link: https://Teresashieldsparker.com/overcomers/

Pastor Heath Flanagan shares the sermon "From Faith to Faith", a continuation to "Portraits Sermon Series". It seems like growing in faith can be an overwhelming task, but we should remember the most important part in our faith journey .. everything starts and ends with Jesus. Wesley agreed with Reformed Covenant Theology in almost every way. Where he did differ was in his view of the termination of the Covenant of Works and the universality of the moral law as an expression of the Covenant of Grace so all people can be led to Christ. These adjustments were obvious results of his Evangelical Arminian Theology. We will also be looking at the article by Dr. Vic Reasoner again to clarify the conditionality of covenants found in Wesley's Covenant Theology as well.  Links to Buy Rode's Book: https://www.amazon.com/Faith-Salvation-Distinguished-Dissertations-Christian/dp/1620325446 https://wipfandstock.com/from-faith-to-faith-16688.html "An Arminian Covenant Theology" Article: http://www.fwponline.cc/v18n2/v18n2reasonera.html
