This seemingly simple tool can mean the difference between a successful training session and a medical emergency. In this eye-opening conversation, we dive deep into real-life scenarios where client safety was compromised when blood glucose levels plummeted during workouts. From Will, who nearly passed out after a night of drinking and insufficient sleep, to a 250-pound student who lost consciousness completely, these stories highlight the critical importance of being prepared for emergencies.Trainers often face a unique challenge: clients who underreport their limitations. Men especially tend to push through discomfort, claiming they're "fine" while their body is screaming for help. The signs are there if you know what to look for—loss of color in the face, incoherent speech, or dizziness. When these symptoms appear, glucose tablets provide the fastest route to recovery, as they're rapidly absorbed through the sublingual gland directly into the bloodstream.Beyond emergency preparedness, we discuss how asking the right questions before each session can prevent these situations entirely. "How did you sleep? Did you eat today? Any alcohol last night?" These simple inquiries can inform your training approach and potentially save lives. The difference between certified trainers and qualified professionals lies in this comprehensive understanding of human physiology and client management. As we work to elevate the perception of personal training from just "posting TNA pics online" to a respected profession, these practical skills matter more than ever. Show Up Fitness is changing the industry one qualified trainer at a time, equipping professionals to earn substantially more than the industry average while providing truly transformative client experiences. Set in the 1870s, Gabe Polsky's adaptation of John Williams' literary western stars Nicolas Cage as a buffalo hunter who lures a naïve young man into an ambitious expedition in the Colorado Rockies. On the red carpet at tiff 2022 and at the premiere of the film Butcher's Crossing, I caught-up with actors Nicolas Cage, Rachel Keller, and the rest of the cast, followed by the film's Q & A to discuss the Cage's decision to star in and strong themes in this movie. Best known for Moonstruck and his wild turns as cinema's most volatile man, Cage continues to prove he is also capable of great depth and nuance on screen, playing opposite Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) in a beautiful adaptation of John Williams' literary western. This frontier epic tells the story of an Ivy League drop-out as he travels to the Colorado wilderness, where he joins a team of buffalo hunters on a journey that puts his life and sanity at risk. From Will's innocence to insight, as the adventure unfolds, Director Gabe Polsky (TIFF '14's Red Army) frames deep subject matter: greed, wrong & right, betrayal, destruction, distinction, and total carnage. Will and his ostensible mentor Miller fall into a spiral reminiscent of Willard and Kurtz in Apocalypse Now — something Cage nods to in the shades of Brando he brings to his performance. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: FTX, 'EA Principles', and 'The (Longtermist) EA Community', published by Violet Hour on November 25, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. 1. Intro Two weeks ago, I was in the process of writing a different essay. Instead, I'll touch on FTX, and make the following claims. I think ‘the principles of EA' are, at the community level, indeterminate in important ways. This makes me feel uncertain about the degree to which we can legitimately make statements of the form: “SBF violated EA principles”. The longtermist community — despite not having a set of explicit, widely agreed upon, and determinate set of deontic norms — nevertheless contains a distinctive set of more implicit norms, which I believe are worth preserving at the community level. I thus suggest an alternative self-conception for the longtermist community, centered on striving towards a certain set of moral-cum-epistemic virtues. Section 2 discusses the first claim, and Section 3 discusses the second. Each chunk can probably be read independently, though I'd like it if you read them both. 2. 'EA Principles' This section will criticize some of the comments in Will's tweet thread, published in the aftermath of FTX's collapse. I want to say that, while I'll criticize some of Will's remarks, I recognize that expressing yourself well under conditions of emotional stress is really, really hard. Despite this difficulty, I imagine that Will nevertheless felt he had to say something, and quickly. So, while I stand behind my criticism, I hope that my criticism can be viewed as an attempt to live up to ideals I think Will and I both share — of frank intellectual honesty, in service of a better world. 2.1. From Will's response: “If those involved deceived others and engaged in fraud (whether illegal or not) that may cost many thousands of people their savings, they entirely abandoned the principles of the effective altruism community.” (emphasis mine) Overall, I'm not convinced. In his tweet thread, Will cites various sources — one of which is Holden's post on the dangers of maximization, in which Holden makes the following claim: “I think “do the most good possible” is an . important idea . but it's also a perilous idea if taken too far . Fortunately, I think EA mostly resists [the perils of maximization] – but that's due to the good judgment and general anti-radicalism of the human beings involved, not because the ideas/themes/memes themselves offer enough guidance on how to avoid the pitfalls.” According to Holden, one of EA's “core ideas” is a concern with maximization. And he thinks that the primary way in which EA avoids the pitfalls of their code ideas is through being tempered by moderating forces external to the core ideas themselves. If we weren't tempered by moderating forces, Holden claims that: We'd have a community full of low-integrity people, and “bad people” as most people define it. Here's one (to me natural) reading of Holden's post, in light of the FTX debacle. SBF was a risk-neutral Benthamite, who describes his own motivations in founding FTX as the result of a risky, but positive expected value bet done in service of the greater good. And, indeed, there are other examples of Sam being really quite unusually committed to this risk-neutral, Benthamite way of approaching decisions. In light of this, one may think that Sam's decision to deceive and commit fraud may well have been more in keeping with an attempt to meet the core EA idea of explicit maximization, even if his attempt was poorly executed. On this reading, Sam's fault may not have consisted in abandoning the principles of the EA community. Instead, his failings may have arisen from the absence of normal moderating forces, which are external to EA ideas themselves. Recall Will's statement: he claimed that, conditional on Sam committing frau...

In this show, host Allan Alford interviews his friend Will Lin about startups and venture capital. Will Lin is a venture capitalist with ForgePoint Capital, focusing exclusively on the information security space. First and foremost, Will views his current role as a way to help others. Allan welcomes Will on to the show to help his listeners learn more about the startup world, the venture capital world, and how those two intersect. The show starts with Allan asking Will why he thinks startups are such a prevalent force in the cyber security world. Will is not sure, but his hypothesis is that this is in large part due to the ever-changing nature of cyber security. Since needs are constantly changing and each organization has unique needs, startups have popped up to address those specialties and change based on the different needs that arise. His second hypothesis is that there always need to be organizations prepared to address new and emerging threats to security. For VCs, Will shares that companies and startups go through very natural progression in terms of maturity depending on their framework. Regardless, what it all boils down to is where in their life cycle any organization finds itself. Once the VC is able to identify where the company is in their life cycle, then they can begin to make informed decisions about the company. This will determine the type of funding that VCs will decide to provide. For example, usually when a company is around 10-20 members, they will be looking for series A funding. Typically, series A funding is around 10-25 million dollars, series B is 20-40 million and series C is 50 million and above. By evaluating the total of the investment, observers can estimate the valuation of the company. While most companies only do a few rounds of fundraising, some companies will experience several late rounds of fundraising and Will advises that this is typically a good thing. The best indicator of health is the number of employees. If the number of employees is going down, that is one of the clearest indicators of regression. Once a VC comes in, though, that is where they are able to lend their experience to help with advising the business, which is Will's favorite part of his job. To close the podcast, Will shares that being able to help people and add value to their companies is the thing that keeps him energized and engaged in his position. Key Takeaways: 0:24 - Listeners are introduced to Allan Alford and his guest, Will Lin. 1:27 - Why do so many people in the security industry rely on startups? 3:29 - What does Will do in his job and how has his background led to his current role? 5:36 - From Will's perspective, what is the critical split between the first round of angel funding 9:33 - What is the expectation for funding in each different series of investments? 15:19 - What does the VC ownership look like from the perspective of the company? 21:22 - Does Will offer specific advice to the startups that he works with? 24:00 - What is Will's opinion on startups that grow without any assistance from VCs? 25:48 - What keeps Will energized in his job? June 2020 has been a month! But, even though Pride was delayed a bit, for very obvious and very good reasons, we are celebrating now. So plug in your earphones and get ready to join the Pride Party! This episode starts a bit heavy with the pretty shitty news about our former favourite author. We've already talked about this pretty extensively in our episode with The Gayly Prophet, but we dunno about you, we're finding it harder to reclaim Hogwarts as our home again. We just need to take a minute and regroup on this one. We've had some set backs come out of the White House (as usual -insert major eye roll here, amirite?-) but then we got some surprise news from the Supreme Court who ruled that LGBTQIA+ folk can't be discriminated against at work! Finally, in the month of all years, we get some good news and something worth celebrating! Leading up to this episode, we polled Twitter and Discord for people's fave queer characters and were not disappointed! From Will and Robin (Stranger Things) to Cosima (Orphan Black) to Sir Hammerlock (Borderlands 2 & 3) and more, there was no shortage of replies. We discovered new characters to stan, and stan we will, and new shows to binge (hello Sense 8!). We did discover a lack of bi, pan, trans, and ace characters gracing our screens so think we obviously need even more diversity on the big and small screens. And upon further investigation post episode, many of the characters that Google tags as bi, um, aren't. So let's do better, ok? There's also talka bout who OUR favourite queer characters are, how geek culture and queer culture are connected (SO SUPER CONNECTED AND ALSO HI FANFIC/SLASH/YAOI!), how Amanda realised she wasn't exactly straight, and how EA are celebrating Pride with a virtual Sims parade! All in all, this was an EPISODE! Check out out and let us know who your favourite queer characters are!
