ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
What happened to the fairies? In this episode of Angela's Symposium, we uncover the history of fairy beings—from terrifying, liminal spirits associated with death, illness, and esoteric knowledge to the benign, whimsical figures of children's books and garden ornaments. Drawing on peer-reviewed scholarship and folkloric sources, I trace how fairies were feared as soul-stealing entities, morally ambiguous tricksters, and powerful beings of the Otherworld in Celtic and Germanic traditions. These entities weren't cute—they were cautionary, chthonic, and occasionally divine. But during the Victorian era, spiritualism, Theosophy, and literary romanticism reshaped fairy imagery into something innocent and controllable. This domestication served ideological purposes: reinforcing ideals of childhood, whiteness, femininity, and empire. With insights from Robert Kirk, W.Y. Evans-Wentz, Katharine Briggs, and contemporary scholars such as Sabina Magliocco, Morgan Daimler, and Richard Sugg, this video explores how fairies reflect changing cultural values—and why reclaiming their wilder past matters.CONNECT & SUPPORT
Many of Cornelius Van Til's critics claim that Van Til did not sufficiently base his apologetic method on Scriptural exegesis. Van Til himself acknowledged that robust exegesis wasn't as prominent in his work as it could have been. That was not, however, an admission that his method was not built on exegesis, just that it's exegetical foundation was assumed more than it was argued. The second generation of Van Tilian scholars (Gaffin, Edgar, Oliphint, Tipton, Poythress, etc.) filled what Van Til claimed was a gap in his theological corpus by focusing on exegetical arguments for Van Til's apologetic approach. In this episode of the Westminster Podcast, Jonathan Brack, Pierce Hibbs, and Brandon Smith discuss what exegetical avenues ought the third generation of Van Tilian scholars explore.

In a field like theology, epistemology (or the study of the nature of knowledge) is tremendously important. Not just because the very existence of God is debated; not only because the possibility of the knowledge of God must be addressed in a systematic way; but because the conclusions we make about God and about the security of our knowledge of him should matter for our jobs, our relationships, and how we view ourselves. This is the story of a theologian. A first rate, world class New Testament scholar and Systematics professor whose body of work stands quietly in the confluence of two great church traditions, Scottish Presbyterianism and Dutch Neo-Calvinism. Few Reformed theologians have exerted the influence in both the church and the academy that Richard B. Gaffin, Jr. has, shaping the theology and spiritual formation of generations of pastors and teachers. Until now, his most significant published works have been inaccessible to most theological readers, published in academic journals, denominational newsletters, and out of print festschrifts and essay collections. A decade in the making, Word & Spirit gathers Gaffin's finest works of biblical and systematic theology and arranges them in a singular, organic whole that presents Gaffin's thought and work as comprehensively and clearly as it ever has been. More than 40 essays, articles, and tracts have been compiled, including “The Usefulness of the Cross”, No Adam, No Gospel, “A Cessationist View,” and “The Work of Christ Applied”. This collection is a must-have for any student of theology. Music Licensing Code: O37WTG9DLOFOFZK5
A discussion of whether a Reformed Christian view of civil governance is compatible with theocracy. We explain how the term "theocratic" has been used, and two key elements of a theocratic view (namely, the monopoly state and civil establishment of religion) that must be rejected in a genuinely Christian view of civil governance. How did Paul think about resurrection, and what role did it play in his overall theological understanding? Kirk sits down for a conversation with retired professor, Dr. Richard B. Gaffin Jr., about Paul's theology of resurrection. We explore questions like, what is the connection between Christ's resurrection and ours? What is the relationship between Christ's resurrection and the ministry of the Spirit in our lives? What does Paul mean when he says that Jesus was "raised for our justification" (Rom 4:25)? And how does Christ's resurrection empower us for our mission as a church?
Dan and Ellen talk with Adam Gaffin, founder of the Universal Hub and inventor of the French Toast Alert System). Dan wrote a profile of Adam for CommonWealth Magazine in 2008. Adam has been a local connector since the earliest days of digital self-publishing — well before blogging, putting he put together a directory of websites called New England Online in the early '90s and then morphing that into Boston Online. Ellen has a Quick Take on a young journalist who lost her job at West Virginia Public Broadcasting after she reported on alleged government abuses in the state's foster care and psychiatric system. The journalist, Amelia Ferrell Knisely, alleges that there was political interference with the station, WVPB, which receives state funding. Dan examines an important First Amendment case involving a citizen journalist in Texas. Roxanna Asgarian of The Texas Tribune broke the story. Many of the local news projects that we're interested in here at What Works are just a few steps beyond citizen journalism, and we are firmly of the belief that the First Amendment protections enjoyed by large news outlets should be applied to small outlets and citizen journalists as well. It remains to be seen whether a federal appeals court in Texas agrees.

In 1959, John Murray, a Scottish systematic theologian at Westminster Theological Seminary, published the first volume of his commentary on the book of Romans, one that John Piper would later call “the most beautiful commentary ever written.” In more than 60 years since it first appeared, Murray's commentary has changed the way scores of pastors and teachers read and teach the Bible, helping to draw many readers and congregations into deeper communion with their savior. Now Westminster Seminary Press has reprinted John Murray's commentary on Romans in an beautiful new hardcover edition, updated with a new introduction by Sinclair Ferguson. In this podcast, we'll revisit this classic text with some of the pastors and teachers it has influenced the most. Along the way, we'll explore the ways in which the Paul's letter to the Romans and John Murray's commentary on that letter help us to understand, to teach, and to preach in the present day. In the Fullness of Time Many Christians believe that eschatology is simply a matter of understanding a future event—what will happen when Christ returns. Over the years, students of today's guest have observed that eschatology is defined by two points—past and future—Christ's death, resurrection, and Pentecost in the past; and continuing through the ongoing fulfillment of Christ's promises to the end of the age. Richard Gaffin is professor emeritus of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary. His seminal courses on Paul and the book of Acts have deeply influenced many, including Jonathan and James. Dr. Gaffin offers a clear perspective on Paul's ministry and redemptive history in his book, In the Fullness of Time: An Introduction to the Biblical History of Acts and Paul. Crossway Books has provided a limited number of copies of In the Fullness of Time for giveaway. For an opportunity to receive one, enter here.
In this interview we sit down with Richard Gaffin, author of “An Introduction to the Biblical Theology of Acts and Paul - In the Fullness of Time” (Crossway) where I pepper Dr Gaffin with every question under the sun in regards to neo-Calvinisim (and its drift to liberalism), Kuyper & Bavinck (and translations), Geerhardus Vos (was he a neo-Calvinist?), Ridderbos (did he cave to liberalism?), Romans 7 (is it a Christian speaking or pre-Christian?), the fact that Pentecost is more than just a blip in the history of redemption (but one of the most important scenes), what the Christian life is made of (“Christ is both the means and the end”), and much more. It was 2017 when Mike Gaffin, aka "The Boston Trucker," received an email from Shell Rotella SuperRigs inviting him to join their team. Over the past several years, Gaffin, a second-generation operator with more than 30 years of experience behind the wheel, had been converting his lifetime love of trucking, and a decades long photographic curation of the business, into one of the largest followings on social media. His likes and views run into the tens of millions, driven largely by his huge Youtube collection: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheBostonTrucker Still, Gaffin initially dismissed Rotella's proposal as a crank email. But after a phone call, it turned out the offer was legitimate. Gaffin, who still trucks full-time doing local work for A. Cardillo and Sons in Waltham, Massachusetts, has joined the Rotella SuperRigs team at select shows throughout the country ever since. Overdrive contributor Long Haul Paul Marhoefer caught up with Gaffin at the Mid-America Trucking Show back in March. Also on the podcast: Another local hauler whose first love was OTR hauling -- and who, like Gaffin, well understands the pressures on, and the difficulties of, life back home for those over the road. Terry Shelton's road to hauling in a dump truck in the region around Sevierville, Tennessee, flowed through his trucking family growing up farther east in Martinsville, Virginia, and a personal tragedy that befell his family back home that, though long ago, haunts his time on-highway to this day.

Being true to our authentic selves is no easy task. However, we can use simple strategies to overcome the fears and barriers that hinder our ability to find our own voices and align our actions with those voices. Stephanie Gaffin, Co-Founder & Managing Partner with SLS Capital Advisors and The Gaffin Group joins us on the show today to discuss the power of meditation and journaling with regard to reaching a state of authenticity in the way we live our lives, the problem with social media and why it degrades authenticity, and the fact that our thoughts cannot always be trusted and we should not let them define us. Stephanie is no stranger to challenging situations, and she shares with us a story of how she turned one of her darkest moments into something much lighter and found herself in the process. In every single situation we find ourselves in, we have a choice as to how we respond. By becoming more mindful and more in touch with who we really are, we are far more likely to make better choices, leading to better outcomes. It's always daunting starting something new, but once you start, the hardest part is already over, and the benefits you experience from journaling and meditation will have you wishing you started sooner. Key Points From This Episode:Stephanie shares her definition of authenticity: Being true to who you really are. The importance of human connection and why authenticity and vulnerability create better relationships. Aligning your thoughts and actions is key to authenticity. Stephanie shares a story about how a funny sticker helped her feel like herself again, in the midst of a challenging experience.Social media degrades authenticity because the audience only sees the "highlight reel, not the behind-the-scenes takes."Fear of judgment on social media prevents people from engaging and connecting in the virtual world. It's impossible to do things perfectly, and nobody expects that of us, so we shouldn't put so much pressure on ourselves. Learning to live in the present moment can help us manage our anxiety about the future. Stephanie's meditation journey and how this practice can help us overcome our fears and find our own authentic voices. Our thoughts are not necessarily true, and we should not let them control or define us.An experience that Stephanie had while skiing where she saw the benefits of her meditation practice. We can only be our true, authentic selves when we remove fear and anxiety from our thoughts and actions.Getting into the habit of doing something like journaling or meditating can be daunting, but you just have to start. Stephanie's call to action: Think about a situation that you have coming up and how you can show up to that as your most authentic self, and then do that. You can learn more about our services at Gaffincreative.com, plus you'll also find resources, show notes, and more for the Clocking In Podcast. Why launch a podcast? It's the cool thing to do right? Just kidding. I recently went full-time in my business, Gaffin Creative, where we produce podcasts for creative entrepreneurs. Launching a podcast felt right. I wanted to share how valuable a podcast could be for your brand, by living it out in my own. Not only that, but I also wanted to pour back into the community I've come to love over the last few years. Many of you are photographers, business professionals, and creative entrepreneurs, and I'd love to share simple things you can do in your business and life to make it a little better. And honestly, I'll be doing the same along the way. I'll be testing out new business softwares, finding a little more balance in my own life, and creating space for inspiration. Additionally, I have big plans to bring on amazing guests to share advice and stories on topics that are really important. So, the Clocking In podcast was built. But why the name Clocking In? I'll be honest, it took me a little longer to launch this podcast because I could not settle on a podcast name. I'd built out a long list of titles, but I wanted to select one with a deeper meaning.Enter Clocking In.If you're a fan of Dolly Parton, you're in the right place. The inspiration from the Clocking In podcast came directly from her hit song, 9 to 5. No matter where we are in our career, we're all clocking in at some point, but we might as well enjoy it while we're doing it. Make sure you hit that subscribe button, and join me on March 1st as I launch the Clocking In podcast just in time for women's history month. Until launch day, I'm your host, Haylee Gaffin, clocking out. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
