Stop us if you've heard this before, but the New York Knicks and Miami Heat are facing off in the NBA Playoffs. That phrase alone brings back memories of the 1990s, when the two teams engaged in one of the most intense rivalries in NBA history. While the conflict lacked the ultimate glory of championships, it was always filled to the brim with bad blood, betrayals, fisticuffs, animosity, and the occasional head coach hanging onto the leg of a star player. So today, ahead of Game 2, Chris Herring, author of Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks, explains the feud between these two franchises, and how this series is bringing the 90's back into today's NBA Playoffs. *[REBROADCAST FROM February 2, 2022] Most New Yorkers will think back to the 90s and remember certain trends, or cultural moments, that captured New York City. On that list is without a doubt one of the only times the New York Knicks were actually good. With stars like Patrick Ewing, John Starks, Charles Oakley, and of course Spike Lee on the sidelines, they eventually even made it to the NBA finals, the first time since 1973. Chris Herring, senior writer at Sports Illustrated, just published a book about this era of the Knicks, called, Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks, and he's with us to take your calls on your memories of watching the 90s Knicks. This segment was selected by our producer Luke Green.

Some of the best leadership lessons I've learned have come from conversations I've had with sports legends like Ned Yost on the podcast (you can listen here as he talks about how to build a winning team culture). But there's nothing like learning alongside a friend. That's why I'm glad to have Brad Williams back for this episode of Leading Simple. Despite decades of mediocrity, the New York Knicks inspire an almost religious devotion from their rabid fanbase. The Nets may play across town with three of the biggest stars in NBA history, but New York still bleeds blue and orange. That was never more evident than in the 1990s, when you could watch the Knicks fight on the court…figuratively and literally…at Madison Square Garden. Under the direction of head coach Pat Riley, and led by players like Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley and John Starks, the Knicks pioneered a style of basketball that was physical, intimidating, and rarely beautiful. Chris Herring, author of Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks, explains how a team known for its tough guy image paved the way for the modern NBA. I intended to talk only briefly with Chris Herring of Sports Illustrated about the 1990s Knicks. Those teams had such a strong identity – which fit some players exceptionally well… and others not so much. The plan was to pivot into the current NBA, ranking the players who fit best and worst with their current teams. But Herring's new book – "Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks" – is so fascinating, we spent considerable time on the 90s Knicks. Then still got into the current players who are in the exact right spot and those who could use a change of scenery.Note: This podcast was recorded before Kyrie Irving was cleared to play Nets home games.
“Iconic.“ David, Torie and Chuck Culpepper roll into March Madness with chats about Beatrix Potter, Jack Kerouac and teachers getting fired for no good reason. Sports journalist Chris Herring zooms in to break down Blood in the Garden, his meticulously researched and compellingly told take on the 1990s New York Knicks. Casual and fervent NBA fans alike will love the details and stories that make it hard to put the book down. Who knew there were runner up rings in national championships?
Cousin Sal is joined by Chris Herring author of Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks as they discuss everything from home he came up with the title, the Knicks rivalry with Jordan and the Bulls, and just who was the toughest player on those 90's Knicks. Chris tells some amazing stories from Anthony Mason sucker punching someone, Charles Oakley gambling with teammates, and even Greg Anthony's Presidential aspirations. Plus, what was Jeff Van Gundy thinking when he grabbed Alonzo Mourning's leg in an attempt to break up a brawl?!? Chris gives insight into what he would say to Knicks owner Jim Dolan and the team's decades-long wait for a true point guard. Finally, Chris reveals if a 90's New York Knicks docu-series might be on the way.
Former Knicks' beat writer Chris Herring stops by to discuss his best-seller "Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks." There was so much to discuss that this became a two-hour conversation that could have easily gone on longer. We talked about which '90s Knicks villain turns out to be a good person, which '90s Knick doesn't seem to have ever gotten over his low point with the team, which '90s Knick threatened to kill which '90s Knick coach, how those teams performed as champs without actually winning a title, never-before-heard behind-the-scenes stories, and the shadow that first appeared in the late '90s that still persists at MSG.
It's another Samson Sit-Down. Chris Herring is an author and journalist. He wrote Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks. Most New Yorkers will think back to the 90s and remember certain trends, or cultural moments, that captured New York City.

Human societies are built on stories, and there are few domains of public life as ripe with storytelling potential as sports. Now, often the kinds of stories we tell around sports involve heroes, conquest, getting to the mountaintop and seeing the promised land. It's much rarer to tell stories about striving mightily before accepting defeat, and learning to live with and grow from failure. So that's why Ari brought on Sport Illustrated's Chris Herring to talk about the most famous teams ever…that didn't make it: the 1990s New York Knicks. Along the way they talk about resilience, the spiritual value of sports fandom, the importance of tradition, Chris's own spiritual journey, the reason why NBA players seem so disproportionately faith-inclined, the trajectory of hip hop in Chicago, and much more!
