Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission - which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy pathfinding the route to the heart of the opioid epidemic.

In Remembrance of James Lynn Baker II, A.K.A “Mr. Jackson” This show takes pride in providing a variety of topics and guests and although we are all different, we are still human beings. We are flawed, we are complex, we are unique, and we all have the potential to serve at the highest levels.  However, some of us take very different paths….dark paths, before we find our true calling. Life for all of us is literally like a pot of boiling water and what we become in that water will determine and define who we become in this finite life. Today's guest will tell the listener how he became hooked on meth and traveled down a dark path that led him on a collision course and a date with destiny with our Dallas SWAT on July 30th, 2008. The Uptown Dallas area was on high alert after several citizens were victimized as they not only lost their property but also their sense of security. Today's guest was the ringleader of these crimes and was captured and sentenced to sixty-five years in the Texas Prison system. In true Shawshank Redemption fashion this guest received help and guidance from the most unlikely of people as he was about to enter the ultra-hot boiling pot of prison life. The coffee bean story was born and applied as today's guest fought, learned, and grew as a person through his journey in the penal system and created a mission to help others and be a change agent as he shared his experience and story with others to try to inspire and motivate others. The Damon West story has been told on many platforms and stages, all across the world, but never from a stage inside of the police department that changed his life fifteen years ago. ATO Family sit back and soak in the coffee bean story and ask yourself, How can I be a change agent in life? Incidents discussed:  Damon West arrest by the Dallas SWAT Unit on July 30th, 2008, for the Uptown Burglaries. Trial, verdict and sentence on May 18th, 2009, for his role in the crimes. Presiding over the proceedings was Judge Mike Snipes. Dallas County jail to TDCJ from 2009- 2015. We don't know how many people die in law enforcement custody each year, whether in an encounter with police on the street, during transport, or while in jails, prisons, or detention centers. Numbers that are reported are not reliable. But it's clear that this has become a public health emergency that needs national standards and review panels.

Marci Marie Simmons was from a good upbringing, and had a good job. She had made a few wrong turns along the way but was doing well. After realizing the company she was working for  was taking part in some not so above board accounting, Marci started doing some 'creative accounting' of her own. So, she had found a way to steal funds on a regular basis, and had become addicted to 'not getting caught'. She knew she had to stop, but couldn't. Listen to this amazing episode as we hear in detail about the day her world came crashing down. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison for in 2011 for stealing a total of $367k. Although a lot, the punishment did not ,match the crime,  and she was made an example of, even spending time in solitary confinement. She was released on parole in March 2021. Never a violent offender in or out of custody, she is now on a mission to help other female inmates who often suffer the same fate in the USA's corrupt and failed justice system. Wow. Sentenced to sixty-five years in a Texas Prison, Damon West once had it all. "Damon West, M.S. Criminal Justice, is a college professor, internationally known keynote speaker and Wall Street Journal best-selling author of The Coffee Bean: A simple Lesson to Create Positive Change, which Forbes' listed in the “Top Twenty Books You Need to Read to Crush 2020.”His autobiography, The Change Agent: How a Former College QB Sentenced to Life in Prison Transformed His World, vividly tells how he transformed the pot of boiling water that is a Texas maximum-security prison into a pot of coffee. At 20 years old, he was a Division 1 starting quarterback at the University of North Texas, when he suffered a career ending injury. He turned to hard core drugs to cope with disappointments of life. After graduation, he worked in the United States Congress, was a national fundraiser on a U.S. Presidential campaign and eventually trained to be a stock-broker for United Bank of Switzerland (UBS). One day at UBS, he was introduced to methamphetamines; he became instantly hooked—and the lives of so many innocent people would forever be changed by the choices he made in order to feed his insatiable meth habit. After a fateful discussion during his incarceration with a seasoned convict, Damon had a spiritual awakening. He learned that, like a coffee bean changing with the application of heat and pressure, he was capable of changing the environment around him. Armed with a program of recovery, a renewed faith, and a miraculous second chance at life, Damon emerged from over seven years of prison a changed man. His story of redemption, grit and determination continues to inspire audiences today."https://damonwest.org/about/

This call had no detailed information and most likely was a shoplifter detained by a loss prevention officer.   These two officers were classmates in the academy, the best of friends, and partners, no matter how brief. They were embarking on their career as Dallas Police Officers. One survived this incident, one did not. Officer Rogelio Santander was shot and killed in that small loss prevention office by a detained suspect. The loss prevention officer, Scott Painter, was left critically wounded.  Officer Crystal Almeida, Rogelio's partner, survived after suffering a crippling gunshot wound to her head. The bravest of souls chose to share her story of partnership, survival, and recovery with our listeners. She begins with her humble upbringing in El Paso, the start of her career in the Texas Prison system and getting hired by Dallas Police Department in 2014. Crystal describes her journey from the academy to Northeast patrol where she reunited with Rogelio. Officer Almeida has been awarded the Medal of Valor, Police Shield, and the Blake Anderson Public Service Award. She is a Star of Texas and Theodore Roosevelt Award recipient and was selected as the Adaptive Training Foundation Athlete of 2019. Under this chest full of medals is an enormous courageous heart of service. This episode frames the special connection endeavored in police partnership. Crystal's determination will ignite your conqueror spirit. Her kinship with Rogelio will clench your grasp on divine connection. She came to the microphone to dauntlessly bolster the memory of her friend, Rogelio. Her wife, Samantha Baquera, joined Crystal in our studio to fearlessly share the reality of perseverance and healing. The ATO Bridging the Divide podcast released Episode#32 on April 24th as a remembrance of Officer Rogelio Santander, #10934, and how the memory of his smile continuesto embrace Crystal. This episode is hosted by Misty VanCuren and special guest host Detective Angela Arredondo. Angela is a 24- year veteran with the Dallas Police Department. She played the vital role as the lead detective in the Special Investigations Unit by interrogating the suspect on this incident subsequently leading to a conviction.

Dennis Wayne Hope Willie Nelson sings about riding in the wide-open spaces with lyrics titled “Don't Fence Me In”. “Don't Fence Me In” was the ballad of Texas inmate Dennis Wayne Hope. Hope bragged that there wasn't a prison in Texas that could hold him. The convicted armed robber even imitated the prisoner played by Paul Newman in Hollywood's Cool Hank Luke. Hope purchased a Jaguar for his girlfriend with money stolen during robberies in Dallas, Texas. While on the run, Hope sent imprisoned convicts letters about life on the outside. Hope impersonated armored car guards with fake ID cards and uniforms. He picked up tens of thousands of dollars in cash deposits. During one getaway, Hope calmly strolled past a police officer parked in a patrol car at the entrance to the grocery store he had just robbed. During a television interview with investigative reporter Robert Riggs, Hope demonstrated how he could use the plastic refill of a ballpoint pen to unlock handcuffs.  This episode, “Don't Fence Me In,” chronicles Hope's prison escapes and the fugitive hunters who get on this trail. We discuss being under the Friday Night Lights in 5A of Texas football. Damon had the very rare opportunity to be on the sidelines of the Dallas Cowboys with Coach Jimmy Johnson and how this door was open. Being a D1 college QB at North Texas U,  the injures that cut his career short and what path that led him to. Damon was working with US Congress, Wall St, and on a US Presidential Campaign before being introduced to meth. How fast he became an addict. Being known as The Uptown Burglar-how long this was going on until July 30, 2008. We get the in-depth explanation of how that day unfolded, the 10 months being in the county jail, the gasp from his Mother when he was sentenced to what she said to him before he was taken to a Texas Maximum Prison. The process of getting himself off drugs, being an inmate for the first few days, and living in Texas Prison with no air conditioning. Listen to this excellent advice Damon received from Mr. Jackson at the county jail and what the lessons are of The Coffee Bean.
