When we hear the word “codependent,” we often picture someone clinging to toxic relationships or constantly rescuing others.  But the brilliant psychotherapist and boundary expert Terri Cole challenges this idea, revealing how capable, competent, and successful people can struggle with codependent patterns too,  just hidden under the mask of over-functioning and over-investing in people's lives.  Doing it all? That's the problem. In this episode, Terri shares how our deep desire for peace and control can drive us to do too much for others—emotionally, mentally, and physically— even at the cost of our own well-being. This conversation is a loving nudge to pause and ask:  “What am I doing for others that they could be doing for themselves?” We explore how stepping out of this “handle-it-all” mindset isn't just freeing—it's life-changing.  Tune in to this episode to learn to overcome high-functioning codependence and find ease, joy, fun, balance, and healthier relationships in your life! Dr. Drew Ramsey is a pioneer in the emerging field of Nutritional Psychiatry and author of "Eat to Beat Depression and Anxiety: Nourish Your Way to Better Mental Health in Six Weeks." Dr. Ramsey reviews the remarkable research that has demonstrated the efficacy of diet for improving mental health outcomes. The foods we eat impact our brain function for better or for worse, delivering essential nutrients, fostering a healthy microbiome, combatting inflammation, encouraging neuroplasticity, and supporting neurotransmitters. He is co-developer of the Antidepressant Food Scale that rates foods based on their potential to support well-being. He is also director of the Brain Food Clinic, which offers integrative psychiatric care incorporating “dietary assessment and food prescription along with coaching, meal planning, and hands on skill building in your kitchen.” He believes that no single diet offers a panacea for mental health optimization, but that replacement of ultra-processed food with nutrient-dense alternatives offers the most benefits with ease of compliance.

You know that feeling you get when you eat comfort food? There is something magical about it. This episode begins by exploring why some foods become comfort food while other food does not and what causes us to feel so fondly about certain foods but not others. https://www.buffalo.edu/news/releases/2015/03/052.html What are the secrets to being a successful adult? That's a hard question to answer but Gretchen Rubin joins me to take a swing at it. Gretchen is wildly successful expert on happiness having written books on the topic and she is also host of the podcast Happier with Gretchen Rubin. (https://gretchenrubin.com/podcasts/). Her latest book is called Secrets of Adulthood: Simple Truths for Our Complex Lives (https://amzn.to/3RutUfP). That is what Dr. Drew Ramsey is here to discuss> He is a board-certified psychiatrist, and pioneer in nutritional psychiatry and mental fitness and an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University. Through the lens of Dr. Ramsey's book, "Healing the Modern Brain," we explore scientifically-backed strategies for enhancing self-awareness, notably the practice of journaling. Dr. Ramsey articulates how self-reflective processes, such as journaling, can activate our prefrontal cortex—a vital area of the brain linked to decision-making and executive functioning. He shares practical advice for incorporating journaling into our daily routines, pointing out how just a few minutes can significantly enhance our emotional clarity and mental fitness. We also discuss real-world applications and personal anecdotes that highlight the transformative power of self-awareness. One particularly poignant story involves Charlotte, a woman whose pandemic-driven drinking habits led her to seek help. Through self-awareness and a structured accountability process, she achieved remarkable change, illustrating how building awareness can lay the foundation for recovery from challenges such as substance abuse. Ramsey, who has an impressive academic and professional background—including a position as an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University and the founder of the Brain Food Clinic—shares insights from his latest book, "Healing the Modern Brain: Nine Tenets to Build Mental Fitness and Revitalize Your Mind." He stresses that the current mental health epidemic demands an enhanced focus on building mental fitness through practical lifestyle changes. This approach, he argues, provides a broader and more meaningful path to emotional well-being rather than simply relying on medication. The conversation transitions to Ramsey's personal experiences with mental health struggles, touching on moments from his college years when he faced low energy and cognitive fog. He reflects on the adjustments he made when moving from rural Indiana to urban Manhattan for his psychiatric training, discussing how these life changes impacted his mental health. Acknowledging the complexity of mental health, Ramsey highlights that it's essential to discern the interplay between various life challenges, from parenting stresses to negotiation of personal identity. #MentalHealth, #NutritionalPsychiatry, #MentalFitness, #SelfCare, #Wellness, #Psychology, #Psychiatry, #Lifestyle, #Diet, #Nutrition, #HolisticHealth, #IntegrativeMedicine, #BrainHealth, #PersonalGrowth, #SelfAwareness, #Healing, #Anxiety, #Depression, #StressManagement, #Mindfulness, #Wellbeing, #GinaRyan, #ACP, #AnxietyCoachesPodcast Learn more about your ad choices. It's New Orleans: Louisiana Eats

The life of a chef is often regarded as glamorous and exciting, but in reality, it's a hard life – exemplified by long hours and frequent financial challenges. For many, it's the only life imaginable. Nathanial Zimet, the ambitious chef behind Boucherie and Bourrée in New Orleans, falls directly into that category. Drawn to the restaurant business at the age of 15, the North Carolina native soon learned it was the only career for him. On this week's show, we sit down with Nathanial to explore what led him from London's Le Cordon Bleu to his purple food truck in New Orleans, where his culinary life here began. From Hurricane Katrina to a near-fatal shooting in 2011 – the indomitable Nathaniel has risen to the top, again and again. So has Drew Ramsey, whose family has run Hubig's, makers of New Orleans' favorite hand pies, for three generations. After a fire destroyed their factory in 2012, a return seemed improbable. But like a fried Phoenix rising from the ashes, Hubig's is back in business after a 10-year hiatus. Drew tells us his tale of tragedy to triumph. We talk about Lightbulbs vs Batteries and the importance of discovering which one you are. We talk about the importance of bringing your weird to the songwriting room, and how it much easier to hone a wild idea into a communicable form than to punch up something that isn't there, and finally we play one together in the studio, his song "Home", the hit he wrote with Marc Broussard.
