Larry Fessenden is a producer, director, and the founder of Glass Eye Pix. Above all, he is a lover of cinema and not afraid to get involved in the technical process and do the work. In fact, he prefers it. A performer in his own right, when Larry isn't making films, he's starring in them.In many ways, Larry is a local legend and icon of the horror genre. His career spans over 40+ years and 20+ films throughout which he has earned a spirit award and acknowledgment from the Criterion Collection. His production company Glass Eye Pix, has not only been a film school of sorts for successful directors like Ti West, he's even invested in their earlier work.Larry is a fascinating case study of what it takes to make your film when you're up against all the odds. His process is his and he doesn't claim to have the right one either but he'll fight you tooth and nail for it. Literally.-----This episode is brought to you in part by MUBI Experience groundbreaking cinema on MUBI with the stunning 4K restoration of Tarsem Singh's THE FALL. Chris Skotchdopole's feature film debut, CRUMB CATCHER At a remote estate in upstate New York, where newlyweds Leah (Ella Rae Peck) and Shane (Rigo Garay) are about celebrate their honeymoon, when the appearance of two workers from their wedding reception brings an escalating sense of dread and menace. Leah works for the publisher who will be releasing Shane's debut novel, a lightly autobiographical examination of family trauma, alcoholism, and the immigrant experience. Tensions over family trauma would be enough kindling for a blowup, but Leah and Shane's marriage is truly tested by the appearance of two weirdos with entrepreneurial zeal and a half-baked blackmail plot: John (John Speredakos) and Rose (Lorraine Farris). They're looking for investors for John's latest invention, a culinary breakthrough called the Crumb Catcher — and they won't take no for an answer. A gonzo home invasion thriller from Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix that pummels the American Dream into just desserts, Crumb Catcher director, co-writer, co-producer and editor Chris Skotchdopole stops by to talk about how constructs and de-constructs his films, working with his collaborators, including cinematographer Adam Carboni and co-writers Rigo Garay and Larry Fessenden, and what's next for him as a filmmaker. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk to an independent film legend. Some have called him the “East Coast Roger Corman,” though that's short-changing Larry Fessenden a bit. Though his production company Glass Eye Pix has been around since the mid-80s, Fessenden made a name for himself with the mid-90s indie horror classic Habit, in which he wrote, directed, and starred as an alcoholic New Yorker who starts dating a vampire. Or so he thinks. Fessenden's new movie Blackout - available digitally April 12th - connects to both Habit and his 2019 film Depraved. We talk about this with Fessenden, as well as his love for the classic Universal Monster Films, the evolving challenges of funding and producing independent cinema, and his work with Kelly Reichardt and Martin Scorsese over the years. Additional B-Sides include The Last Winter, Wendigo, and Beneath. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Heather Buckley is a grand maester of film and horror. The first feature she produced, Jenn Wexler’s The Ranger, for Glass Eye Pix and Hood River Entertainment, premiered at SXSW and played numerous festivals on an international run before it was released in NYC and LA. Heather’s work as a film analyst and journalist spans over a decade, with bylines in Vulture, Dread Central, and Fangoria. Her background in SFX work includes: Circus of the Dead, Dead Still, and We Are Still Here. She is currently a Blu-Ray special features producer, creating documentaries for Kino Lorber, Lionsgate/Vestron, Arrow Films and Shout Factory releases, including John Carpenter's The Thing, Barton Fink, The Long Riders, Saw 10th Anniversary Reissue, and Army of Darkness. The movie that Heather chose this week is a real doozy - Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Heather talks about how she believes it's one of the most important films ever made. She discusses how this film forces the audience to root for violence. She elaborates on the fact that this movie has no moral center, and how it's the audience's job to gauge morality. And she and April also discuss the controversy this film sparked upon release and why the movie was initially difficult to get a hold of. You can see Heather's work all over the place. Plus, you can watch The Ranger on Shudder. And if you haven't seen Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer yet, be careful. With April Wolfe and Heather Buckley. Directed by the Master of Mayhem, Michael Bay, and featuring a gargantuan, and frankly brilliant, cast, Armageddon is the summer blockbuster you love to hate, despite it being the highest grossing film of 1998. Is the hate valid? Is there more to this driller thriller than meets the eye?   The synopsis is as follows:  When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper, who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J., who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter, until the mission proves otherwise. What are your limits?  Surely there are some types of horror movies that you will not watch.  Or are there?  There has always been an audience for the disturbing and unsettling image. And there’s an intimate relationship between the violence and sensationalism shown in Underground Movies and the anxieties of our culture. In this episode I discuss Exploitation Films and Extreme Horror: its history starting with Thomas Edison’s first experiments with the movie camera through the Grindhouse Era to Modern Horror Cinema.  If you like the show, please consider writing a review on iTunes.  It really helps.  Thanks a lot for listening.    You can now subscribe to the Hellbent for Horror podcast now available on iTunes and Stitcher   iTunes link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/hellbent-for-horror/id1090978706 Stitcher link: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/hellbent-for-horror?refid=stpr   For you, the listeners of Hellbent for Horror, Audible is offering a free audiobook download with a free 30-day trial to give you the opportunity to check out their service. Sharing the movie experience with a theater full of people can be exhilarating or frightening—sometimes both.  You put yourself in the hands of the filmmaker to take that ride, not knowing where or how it’s going to end.  In rare cases a movie can provide an audience with an ecstatic, transcendent experience, almost religious in its power that leaves you walking on air afterward and running back to grasp that experience again.  Sometimes the audience isn’t ready for that story or style and the shared experience with the audience is much darker and marked with disapproval…and sometimes outright hatred.  It’s as if the film has committed sacrilege against your expectations for it.  When that happens in a horror film is it the fault of the film or filmmaker, or the audience not prepared for the “horrible-beautiful” imagery and storytelling that challenges the comfort zone?  In this episode we discuss religious and sacrilegious experiences in movie theaters, and the unwritten pacts that audiences make with filmmakers, and how the shared experience in a theater affects your own experience of the film   Movies Discussed: In 1895, the Lumiere Brothers showed their film “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station”.
