"When I ran the Cherry Blossom (10 Miler), it was very windy. And what I did in that time (46:11), I felt like I could have sustained that pace for a while. Plus the environment – the wind, the temperature was very cold… Based on the training I was doing, my coach felt like I could go under 60 (minutes). We've been planning on just getting a solid half, and then a really fast half. It's really in my mind. So hopefully. Hopefully, after the track season this year I can find a really fast (half marathon) and try to get the American record there." Hillary Bor is a two-time U.S. Olympian in the steeplechase and the third-fastest American steeplechaser in history. He is preparing to make his half marathon debut at the United Airlines NYC Half on March 17. This is a highly-anticipated half marathon debut since Bor ran 46:11 last year to break Greg Meyer's American record of 46:13 for 10 miles at the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler. Even with his track success, he's taken well to the roads. In this episode, Bor talks about his hopes for a career on the roads, why he thought Ryan Hall's 59:43 American record could be attainable, when he's thinking about the marathon and why his training group under coach Scott Simmons has him set up for success. He also has unfinished business on the track as he looks to make his third Olympic team this summer for Paris. Hillary also shares some of his own story coming from Kenya from an accomplished running family, his NCAA career at Iowa State and then joining the U.S. Army before his running career took off. Ron Warhurst won two NCAA titles as a member of the Western Michigan cross-country team in the 1960s. He graduated in 1966, volunteered for the Marines, then repeatedly asked to “walk point” through the Vietnamese jungle, which resulted in two Purple Hearts, before he was honorably discharged in 1970. He learned a simple lesson: “The world doesn't stop because you're scared.”Three later the University of Michigan named him their varsity cross-country coach, with little experience. Warhurst's teams won 18 Big Ten cross-country titles, his star Greg Meyer won the 1983 Boston Marathon, and many others ran in the Olympics, including several medalists. Warhurst also created a famous training regimen still called “The Michigan,” which thousands of competitive runners have used for decades.Ronnie's philosophy is straightforward, but difficult: 1) preparation, structure, and flexibility – a hard combination. 2) Don't look over your shoulder because the race is in front of you. And 3) on any given day, there are people on the starting line who don't want to be there because it's too hot, too cold, raining, or snowing. Your job is to beat those guys. For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon

GREG MEYER, 1983 Boston Marathon champion; 5-time state champion coachIn 1983, Greg Meyer won the world's most famous race at the peak of the American running boom, beating his friend and training partner, Bill Rodgers, a.k.a. Mr. Marathon. Even more impressive, Meyer ran a sub-4:00 mile, and set American records in the 8K, 10K, 15K, 25K, and 10 mile – despite carrying 155 pounds, 30 more than Bill Rodgers, and 40 more than today's champions. In this conversation Meyer talks about how U-M coach Ron Warhurst knew how to motivate him; how he came back from a heartbreaking setback in 1981 to win Boston in 1983; how he helped Dexter (MI) high school's cross-country team win a record five-straight state titles; and how he has applied all these lessons to his current work in health care. Three take-aways: you have to visualize what you want; bad weather is your friend, because someone else doesn't want to run in it; and you have to learn how to disagree without being disagreeable if you're going to get people's honest opinions, and still be respectful and kind. For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon

Hello, kaiju lovers! We've reached the point where the “Year of Gamera” gets even goofier—and where Nate begins to miss seeing the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes even more. He's joined by returning guest, Earth Destruction Directive host Luke Jaconetti, and newcomer/MSTie Greg Meyer to discuss Gamera vs. Guiron. The “Kennys” get more precocious and useless (Tom is dead inside). The monsters get more outlandish (Guiron is Knifehead, anyone?). And the villains get … shapely jumpsuits? Listen as Nate, Luke, and Greg connect this movie to Chronicles of Narnia and Barbarella, among other things, and muse about their favorite riffs from the MST3K episode. Nate's descent into madness continues. The Toku Topic is the First Traffic War in Japan. It may sound like a forgotten Transformers storyline, but it's actually a time period when car accidents increased dramatically in the Land of the Rising Sun. Hence why Akio is obsessed with making a world “without wars or traffic accidents” in this movie. Beforehand, Nate is visited by Jessica Shaw, his pseudo-sister clone, and she tells him she's bringing Luke and Greg with her first tour group, who will then watch their live broadcast. Then afterward, the infamous Terran spacewomen, Flobella and Barbella, come to Earth to kidnap Gamera—but not if Monster Island's own magical girl superheroine, Crystal Lady (aka Jessica), has anything to say about it! "We wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to get better. I don’t have the pressure to get into a marathon build-up or if the Olympics were happening. I wanted to come out of this better. A big part of that for me was maybe taking it a little easier with the mileage and intensity and focusing back to strengthening up my leg. I lost a lot of muscle – not just in my ankle and those tendons but throughout that left leg. It’s been a long process and I think I certainly underestimated how difficult it would be. It’s been two years since I was operated on but I feel like I’m finally getting back to my old self and getting some good push-off in my left leg. There was certainly a big hitch in my stride at the trials. I really wasn’t getting a lot of push there. It was just setting down and pivoting. My right leg was doing a lot of the work. I can certainly say that I’ve made some big improvements mechanically with that." It’s been eight months since Galen Rupp won the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials on Feb. 29. In that span of time, he says he has not run a single step with another person. He’s still been training but he’s been grinding solo. That all changed on Friday when Eugene Marathon organizers put together the Row River Half Marathon. It was Rupp, Suguru Osako (his former Oregon Project teammate) and Patrick Tiernan. Many thought that Rupp could take a crack at Ryan Hall’s American record of 59:43 could be in jeopardy but Rupp finished the race in 60:22. His PR is still 59:47 from Prague in 2018. However, he walked away from Friday with the new American record in the 10-mile since he split 45:53 and Greg Meyer had run 46:13 in 1983. Osako finished behind him in 61:15. In order for the record to count, I believe you need three finishers so Pat Tiernan, who paced for a bit, took third in 66:42. Support for this episode comes from Bakline Running. What's on your list? It's everyone doing and being what suits you best. Sure, you don’t look at it that way. You just think people doing what you like is doing what’s right. Guess again. What if your list of what you want wasn’t getting what you want, but keeping you from getting it? Would you give it up then? And if you did, what do you think you’d get in return? In this episode, Greg Meyer asks us to consider (and try) that very thing. F'ing yourself, um, meaning forgiving yourself can be the hardest of all the forgiveness challenges. It is easier to write yourself off as unforgivable, or just forget about it and move on. But should you choose to do the real thing and realize, accept and deal with all the messed up stuff you are and have done, well, that will be a journey. Maybe the most important journey of your life.  In this episode, Greg Meyer helps us see how there's forgiveness woven into the fabric of the universe and it's not only worth it, but possible, to offer it to yourself. Matthew Futterman, author of the best running book of the summer, Running to the Edge, joins us for this episode! At the 1972 Munich Olympic Games Frank Shorter won Marathon gold, sparking the American distance running boom. He followed with silver at Montreal in '76--the same year Bob Larsen's group of rag tag San Diegans known as the Jamul Toads surprised the country by winning the US Cross Country Championships. American dominance ensued at Boston and New York as Bill Rodgers, Alberto Salazar, and Greg Meyer carried the torch into the 80s. But then, nearly as quickly as Shorter lapped the track in Munich, our preeminence waned. At the 2000 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials only one American male even qualified for the Sydney Games and none of the competitors hit the Olympic A Standard. By 2004 we had Olympic medalists in both the men's and women's races at Athens. And in recent years Americans have won major races at Boston, Chicago, and New York for the first time in decades. So who is responsible for the resurgence? Perhaps no one more than Coach Bob Larsen. In his new book, Running to the Edge: A Band of Misfits and the Guru Who Unlocked the Secrets of Speed, New York Times Deputy Sports Editor Matthew Futterman chronicles Coach Larsen's journey and the parallel rise, fall, and resurrection of American distance running.

Being seen and known by others is a fundamental human desire. In today’s world, though, we often live at such a hurried pace that we miss opportunities to see each other and to be known by each other. We often live without a sense of place. We’re filled with great relational longing, but we frequently lack direction and the “know how” when it comes to connecting with each other in our local communities. We can be absent in the present and feel stuck in this habit. This is frustrating, but the good news is that the gospel of Jesus offers us the promise of change! In this class, we’ll examine how God seeks to return us to a more humane way of living and a more humane pace of living — so that we might slow down enough to be known and be more present in the ordinary places in which we live. God invites us to move at His slower, better pace — to live at Godspeed.
