Original airdate: May 3, 2022 The term Bushido literally means the way of a warrior. It's been used in Japan since the 9th century when samurai soldiers bravely served their lords. Today, Bushido is seen as a collection of ideals that lead to fidelity to one's values and self-improvement. My guest, Yoichi Utebi, believes that Bushido can serve us well in dealing with our personal and collective challenges. Yoichi Utebi is a movie producer and lecturer. Born in Japan, Yoichi grew up in Lebanon and the U.S. and where he was exposed to multiple cultures and ethnicities. After 12 years of experience in marketing and management in IT companies, Yoichi decided to join Happy Science, a spiritual movement in Japan, as a minister and lecturer, and produce movies. During our conversation, Yoichi talks about the Samurai's bushido code of conduct and ideals and how we can apply it in our lives. Bushido is showcased in his new movie “The Cherry Bushido” a film about a young devotee and group of friends who unite to protect Japan from the threat of extinction by its neighboring country.

EPISODE 133 | Cult Pop Suicide: Japanese Cults Japan is a land of many contradictions - very forward-looking but also retrograde. And when it comes to the spiritual side of things, quite a few people seem to fall for various cults, scammers and charlatans. And just offbeat beliefs, like that Jesus' brother died on the cross while He moved to Aomori Prefecture in northern Honshu, where he married and taught and lived until 106. Like what we do? A new religious movement founded in Japan on 6 October 1986 by former Wall Street trader Ryuho Okawa, whose followers regarded him as the incarnation of a supreme being from Venus. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about one of the largest cults in Japan—the Happy Science Cult. Yes, that's really their name. They were founded by Ryuho Okawa who was the key rival to the Aum Shinriko cult (who tried to kill Okawa with poison gas in his car). The Happies believe that Okawa is the embodiment of the god El Cantare who was born on Venus millions of years ago. Their leader channels people like Jesus, Buddha, Socrates, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and even Michael Jackson to write books for him. They produce tons of horrible anime, try to influence elections, and of course take all the money they can. Why does Okawa's son claim he is a fraud? How many books have they written? Why are they called Happy Science? Listen, laugh, learn. ÞESSI ÞÁTTUR ER Í ÁSKRIFT Á PATREON. Sjáumst þar!Happy Science er einn stærsti sértrúarsöfnuður Japans. Happy Science Members focus on attaining enlightenment through activities such as daily self-reflections, giving love, and helping create a modern utopia. This week on The Malliard Report, Jim welcomes one of the key speakers of the movement Yoichi Utebi to the show to discuss the faith, his career as a producer, and much more. “Yoichi Utebi is a producer and world lecturer for Happy Science. Born in Japan in 1968, Utebi grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, and New York City. Raised in a rare Japanese Christian family, he was deeply touched by Muslim culture and the beauty of Lebanon during his formative years in Beirut. However, the Middle East also exposed Utebi to the horrors of war, as he and his family dodged bullets and bombings before fleeing to London and back to Japan, leaving everything behind in a sudden evacuation. In the 7th grade, Utebi moved to New York for 10 years, where he was exposed to friends from multiple cultures and ethnicities. His rock band produced a popular album and gained quite a following in the city before Utebi decided to forego his musical pursuits and return to Japan. After 12 years of experience in marketing and senior management at various American IT companies in Japan, Utebi joined Happy Science in 2010, where he quickly rose to Director of International Communications. Utebi is currently a minister and world lecturer for Happy Science and a producer on The Cherry Bushido.” This is a great episode and Yoichi's outlook is certainly infectious. The term Bushido literally means the way of a warrior. Many years ago, people were comparing Attack on Titan to The Walking Dead in tone and structure. Today, those comparisons continue, only in a different form with its recent announcement. But to go along with that bafflement, there's a lengthy discussion on some other rumblings in relation to the anime dub production scene as the spring season prepares to launch, along with some interesting updates to various productions, the latest one-shot from the cinematic auteur known as Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man Part 2 who?), and yet another layer to the wild Prince of Tennis dub saga. A new film from Japan, “The Cherry Bushido,” lands at the perfect time to remind us to re-examine our convictions and spiritual fortitude in the face of today's daunting challenges. Similar yet distinct from chivalry, the western code of honor handed down from the gallant knights of yore, Bushido is the organizing principle of samurai moral values and ethics that has been at the heart and soul of Japanese culture for centuries. Like chivalry, Bushido is typified by virtues like righteousness, benevolence, respect, honor, fidelity, and courage. Unlike the chivalric code, the true Bushido spirit is based on the belief that we are spiritual beings who will eventually return to the spiritual world. Having experienced relative peace and prosperity in recent years, many have relaxed their self-vigilance and blurred the convictions that can mean the difference between victory and defeat on the spiritual as well as physical plain. With the pandemic and the social, political, and geopolitical turbulence we are experiencing today, now is a good time to consider the Bushido spirit and virtues that can anchor and guide us to act on our beliefs in these trying times. Okawa teaches that whenever we face a challenge, no matter how seemingly formidable, we are really being given an opportunity to make a choice- to lose faith, rant at the wind and waves, and sail adrift, or maintain our convictions, take the helm, and navigate a happy and abundant future for ourselves and the world. To successfully stay the course through life's storms, however, we must know where we are headed. To hold fast, we must have a clear understanding of what our mission is and a strong mindset to steer us there. Finding our mission and developing the mindset muscle that will keep us on course takes awareness, intention, and effort. Okawa's personal journey led him to discover and commit to a mission much larger than most- to bring greater happiness to mankind by uniting all religions and cultures to live in harmony- but his inspiring story shows us how we can find our own North Star and stay true to it, no matter the circumstances. That story is told in Twiceborn, a new biopic that tells the story of Satoru, a highly successful businessman who relinquishes everything to pursue his true calling. It's Science Fiction Week on Short Wave, earthlings! So strap on your zero gravity suits and polish your light sabers because we're about to get nerdy ... starting with today's episode. It's one of our science fiction myth busting favorites from earlier this year. Contrary to sci-fi depictions in shows like Iron Man and Star Wars, getting from point A to point B in space is a tough engineering problem. NPR Science Correspondent Geoff Brumfiel, with help from scientist Naia Butler-Craig, explains how space propulsion actually works, and why some new technologies might be needed to get humans to Mars and beyond. Happy Cultsgiving! We're celebrating today with Aesthetic Realism, a cult based on the belief that Eli Siegel, a white guy who in 1925 wrote a very long poem that includes a lot of talk about Indians and I guess solved literally everything by doing so; and Happy Science!, which doesn't actually have an exclamation point on the end of it but I refuse to stop typing it that way, and whose leader insists he has eradicated COVID-19 among its members using a "spiritual vaccine" that can be administered online. Also they have made a significant number of anime films and they're super into Trump. Enjoy!
This week we continue the tales about Happy Science that originated in Japan. As we learn this week their reach is farther then first thought and their political aspirations are ones to be aware of. The Essence of Buddha with Kiyoshi (Keith) Shimada The Essence of Buddha is about living a life with meaning and purpose. It offers a contemporary interpretation of the way to enlightenment, written by highly revered spiritual leader. The fundamental tenets of the Buddhist understanding of life, such as The Eightfold Path, The Six Paramitas and the Laws of Causality, are clearly explained in modern and accessible terms, along with the need for self-reflection, the nature of karma and reincarnation, and other teachings of the Buddha. Enlightenment is a potential achievement for every sentient being. The path towards it is an expansion of consciousness, moving from material concerns to an increased awareness of the unseen spiritual reality. This, and the practice of a love that gives, rather than just expecting to be loved, is the only path to happiness, and a better world. Minister Kiyoshi Shimada is Happy Science USA (North America) CEO. He joined Happy Science as a priest in Japan and has been instrumental in helping Master Ryuho Okawa with his oversea's lectures. Happy Science was founded by Ryuho Okawa in 1986 as a spiritual movement dedicated to bringing greater happiness to humankind. Happy Science is involved in various activities with a goal to overcome barriers of race, religion, and culture and work toward a world united in peace and harmony.
