Timestamps 01:00 From schoolboy to the Olympics - from a family of ball sport heros. Matt was inspired by Martin Cross to row to a high level - he was his school teacher. Later he was President of his university club where he led the introduction of professional coaching. 04:00 Rowing teaches skills Matt was running Google in Africa, Middle East and Europe for the past 10 years - he tells a lot of anecdotes about rowing. Steve Gunn (a harsh coach) taught how to take responsibility for what you are doing. Are you a piece of sh*t on the end of the oar? When the mindset is right but the self-appraisal was not. The things Matt learned at rowing were the human things - more useful than Business School, Consultancies and University. I wouldn't be where I am in the business world without the rowing lessons. 08:30 Act like an owner The unique side of rowing is that when I'm seat racing, I'm against you. When we are in the crew, I'm with you. Act like an owner at Google - take responsibility for what you're doing and win as a team. We collaborate hard - and sometimes a collaborative competitiveness gives a better outcome. 11:00 High Pressure Situations The start line of a Henley Royal Regatta final is where Matt felt the most intense pressure. Take confidence from the feeling of nerves and the adrenaline surge - this is a sign you are ready for a big performance. Get the attention off yourself - focus on the process is helpful. Know there is someone there who wants you to succeed. 14:45 Henley Royal Regatta Progress Matt is a Henley steward - he marks the progress over recent years. Sir Steve Redgrave asked Matt to help the committee to plan a 10 year strategy. It looks unchanging yet it's always evolving. Three new womens quad scull events were announced - near parity in Open events and Womens events. Since 2015 every race has been on YouTube live and on demand. You Win or You Learn. 20:00 Returning to Rowing It has been a joy and a recalibration too. The gains as you come back are lovely - rediscovering the joy. A lot is about remembering the feelings. How to balance training and travelling for work. How you manage your time at work is important. Matt blocks his diary to take kids to school twice a week - the most important time of the week. He does the same for rowing training. The discipline when traveling of visiting the hotel gym. The more senior you get the more important it is to show up refreshed and feeling great - in good shape. Leaders need to be in the moment and to have time for staff. Matt is planning to mentor people in business, improve his sculling, rowing strength training this year. Masters rowing is "running up the down escalator". It doesn't have to be the same each year - unlike younger rowing years. Choose something fun to plan for your future rowing.

Her work focuses on female athletes, training according to menstrual cycle and screening for LEA (Low Energy Availability) and RED-S. She is a Strength and Conditioning Coach at Cambridge University Boat Club (men's side) and coaches a variety of individual clients including female master rowers. Gosia holds an MSc in Strength and Conditioning and BSc in Sport and Exercises Science plus various soft tissue and sports massage qualifications. She gained her clinical experience working at Spire Lea Hospital in Cambridge with BUPA as a health advisor. About Susie:Susie's story began back in 2012 at Oxford Brookes University, where she first learnt to row. Over the next 10 years, she went on to row with Sydney Rowing Club, Leander Club, and ultimately trained and raced with the British Rowing Team. Along the way, she had some incredible experiences, including winning a bronze medal at World Cup III and becoming a two-time Henley Royal Regatta winner. During the 2021–2022 season, Susie struggled with RED-s while training full time with the British Team (which ultimately contributed to her retirement from the sport in 2024). This challenging period opened her eyes to the importance of athlete welfare and health. Since retiring from rowing and becoming a mum, she has been dedicated to supporting the welfare needs of athletes. Susie works at Oxford Brookes University, where she provides care for student-athletes in distress. About the course:Female athletes are more prone to develop a complicated relationship with food due to the unrealistic expectations of social media, society or peer pressure. Therefore, it is essential to equip athletes with various tools that would help with early detection of undereating. It's also advisable to pay an extra attention to young athletes who are going through growth development and light weight rowers who must train with a significantly lower energy intake than open weight. Low energy availability (LEA) and relative energy deficiency in sports can impact both genders, however the sole purpose of this course is to focus on female physiology.LEA and RED-s courses for female rowers are a comprehensive guide to an early management and detection of disordered eating which can be detrimental for health. Both courses have been designed for parents, coaches, athletes or organisations who are serious about finding out more about preventative measurements or solutions to aid with an early detection of LEA or RED-S.The material covers all of the essential subjects linked with eating habits and training's energy demands. Every module contains a video, slide and a description, additionally at the bottom of the course users can find documents and other resources to download. There are two different courses to chose from one is for individuals and the second one for organisations like sports clubs or universities.

How London Rowing Club strategised to win at the British Masters Rowing Championships for the second year in a row. 01:00 James Sexton-Barrow is Captain of London Rowing Club he is talking about their Victor Ludorum Trophy win - they won more points than anyone else at the championship regatta. It is more special as the whole club got involved. 02:00 Mindset approach Masters groups can change a lot from one year to the next. We went straight into planning the next year's racing after the regatta in 2024. We needed to be better athletes and performing at a higher level than the prior year. Two other clubs had more entries than we did this year - we got more medals showing that the standard of performance was higher. We won 8s and 4s which got more points as big boats. 04:00 From participation to performance The club was very proud of our achievement - this became a driving force for the impetus to keep going and to improve, bringing in more participants to train regularly. 05:00 Coaching and training plan The age range is from 36 to over 75 within the club so the coaching plan had to be flexible and reflect the different abilities and time availability. We could not mandate everyone to row on Sunday mornings or to erg on Tuesday nights as work/life balance was so varied within the group. Any good masters group h as to acknowledge the vast differences between individuals' ability to train. There are times in the week when we try to get as many people on the water as possible and coaching will be available. We aim to get as many boats out as possible then for side by side pieces - get value from togetherness. We ask those who cannot make it to go out at another time to make up the session. For land based training we put out a schedule - flexibility enables more participation. Fit in training around your own diary. Selection was focused on several regattas "age banding" and also availability for both events. We started in March/April with a squad meeting and to do early lineups. We reviewed erg performances over winter, race performances in head races, age-banding for selection. Last year we were too strict in crew selection and left it a bit too late. Last year it was when we did the entries - we didn't look back at past training performances, it was only based on age. Training in a unit together for a long time contributed to better success. 10:30 The aftermath We have our second peak regatta next weekend. World Masters is following and some of us are going there too. It feels like a 'bigger machine' this year. We also love going to local regattas like Kingston and Molesey. The rest of the club is more respectful because we won there is a growing sense of this group as a serious entity within the club. LRC was founded to win medals at Henley Royal Regatta - which we did this year this is the club focus. We are a big club and the masters play a big role in running the club organisation. Prior to last year's win the masters were left to "do their thing" and as long as the masters are happy then that's OK. The club doesn't put a big emphasis on the performance of that group. A big change this season is now the club sees that we can win, are noteworthy and are out there making a name for themselves. There is recognition that the masters are going faster, and that they should be supported adequately, with equipment, coaching, training and access to trailers to go to regattas. We have had huge support this year and we hope it continues. Winning it 3 times would the real trick!

London RC won the British Masters Championships Victor Ludorum prize in 2024. We talk to coach and captain James Sexton-Barrow about their approach to training, racing and organising their masters squad. Timestamps 01:00 The plan to win the trophy began with a tracking spreadsheet. 02:30 The common goal for masters at London Rowing Club - it's a very big club membership with 100-120 rowers. The vision to win the trophy started after the 2023 event. The rowing sub-committee set the goal in January. 05:00 There are many sub-groups within the masters membership with their own objectives. A kick-off meeting brought everyone together. The club's founding was about winning at Henley Royal Regatta. We can all do this and get our photo on the wall next year. 07:00 Challenges overcome We have a limit to number of boats and trailer space - the logistical challenge was addressed early. Also members expectations were managed as all fours had to also be quads to save trailer space. [The regatta does sweep one day and sculling the next.] Shared goals meant members had to do well in lots of events across a broad base of individuals. Time was allocated to crew boats and balanced against individual goals for the collective goal. 11:00 The members age from masters A but the youngest category race offered in BMRC is B. Crews had to be averaged out to accommodate younger members. Ages from 28 to early 70s took part. Everyone was happy to mix-and-match. Most people did 3 races over the weekend. Most crews were in championship age group racing, a few did intermediate category events. 15:15 What next? Henley Masters Regatta and next year the Banyoles World Rowing Masters Championships is a future focus. We would like to retain the trophy in 2025 too. Want easy live streams like this? I'm delighted to speak with Patrick “Paddy” Ryan this week. Paddy is Chief Coach of Cambridge University Women's Boat Club (CUWBC).   Paddy has a wealth of rowing experience, having first started as a rower himself in his native Australia. After a move to the UK, he joined the Thames Rowing Club. Paddy also spent six years at London Youth Rowing (LYR) helping the small charity grow to a London-wide group, supporting thousands of teenagers every year. Paddy began his career at CUWBC in 2013 as assistant coach, bringing his considerable knowledge from his rowing experiences, and most importantly, his recipe for ‘knowing how to win'. In 2021 Paddy became the CUWBC chief coach. His career highlights include, as an athlete, winning Wyfold Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta, winning the first Blondie Race in 2016 as Assistant Coach and then as Chief Coach, working with the winning 2022, 2023, and 2024 Blue Boat.  Paddy and I speak in depth about the culture he has created at CUWBC.

Coming off of an undefeated dual season, winning the Eastern Sprints and the IRA National Championship, the H150's made history this past season. Boyce shares his testimony with Hudson on what went into the season, his overall method to excellence and recruiting athletes to join the Crimson, managing a college lightweight rowing team, recent renovations to the historic “Newell Boathouse” home to the Men's Heavyweight & Lightweight teams, and the excitement for what's in store for the future of the program. Billy answered some of the questions in our Q&A, but made it clear of how proud he really is of his team, commending their success this season to hard work and pure discipline. The competitive culture of the squad, prompted each individual to reach their highest potential both on the water and off the water, setting some record-breaking standards across the team. These can be hard to get entries in because HRR does not have masters events. Row on the same course in different events like Henley Masters Regatta - a 1k event in July. The London Veteran Eights Head of the River Race is on the Boat Race course and run in March each year. Australia's Head of the Yarra is the premier event in the Southern Hemisphere in Melbourne each November. The Amsterdam Heineken Regatta is uniquely over several different race distances. Touring Rowing races include the Tour de Lac Leman (around Lake Geneva) and is over 100km long. Cath draws on her careers as an Olympic rower and conflict diplomat, combined with her experience of working with a wide range of organisations across sectors to raise performance, transform cultures and develop effective leadership and teams. As an Olympic rower, Cath competed at three Olympic Games. Highlights include winning the World Championships in 2003 and an Olympic silver medal in 2004.   As a diplomat for over a decade, Cath specialised in conflict issues, with postings to Bosnia and Iraq, as well as leading in Whitehall on the UK civilian contribution to stabilising conflicts around the world. These experiences equipped her with leadership, negotiating skills, resilience, and the ability to deliver outstanding performance under extremely challenging circumstances. Cath has published, The Long Win: The search for a better way to succeed - that challenges the often narrow lens we have on what winning means, and sets out a new way of thinking and reframing success across business, sport and education. Cath continues to be active in supporting the next generation of sporting talent, including through support of the Youth Sport Trust, the True Athlete Project and as Chair of Love Rowing (British Rowing's Charitable Foundation).  Cath has commentated for Henley Royal Regatta and the BBC Boat Races and been invited to review the newspapers on Radio 4's Broadcasting House.
