PAUL O'Donovan might have chosen to take some time off after winning his third Olympic – and second gold – medal in Paris during the summer. He would have been well within his rights to rest, recover and let everything sink in.Instead, he travelled to Canada just a couple of weeks later and won his seventh World Rowing title. He also started working as a doctor in the interim. His recent achievements, along with his European and national titles got us thinking, at Star Sport HQ, is Paul O'Donovan the greatest Irish sportsperson of all time? There are plenty of contenders to the title: Roy Keane, Katie Taylor, Henry Shefflin to name but a few.O'Donovan has dominated a sport like no other Irish person has, and has raised the profile of a sport in a way perhaps only Katie Taylor can match. We're obviously biased down here in West Cork, but spoke about why he just might be Ireland's greatest sportsperson of all time on this week's podcast. All this and more on this week's Star Sport Podcast. You have most likely heard the last name “Rane” come up in some sort of rowing dialogue. After the podcast with the New Trier Boys, I felt it was only right to have twins Rachel Rane & Jonah Rane, NTRC ‘19 coxswains, along with their older sister, Eden Rane, NTRC ‘17 coxswain, to discuss how their family comprised of 80% coxswains, manage to be some of the most elite and well-respected boat drivers in the nation. The family chats about the true competitive culture that they were raised in, how they go about breaking records, making history, and so much more. The love that they all share for the sport is truly unmatched. Rachel is the Varsity 8+ coxswain for the University of Texas, having been a two-time consecutive NCAA National Champion for 2021 & 2022, while also striking Gold in the Women's 8+ at the 2022 Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Italy this past summer. She is also ranked as a CRCA & Big-12 First Team All-American. Jonah coxes for the Badgers at the University of Wisconsin on the Men's Rowing team, where he competed at and won the 2022 Royal Canadian Henley, while continuing to impact the squad on a positive note. The eldest sibling, Eden Rane, coxed the Women's Lightweight Rowing Team at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 2021, being the president of SAAC, a large role representing student-athletes. Their mother, Michelle, also coxes Masters Rowing and is probably one of the most supportive parents (along with their father Mike) in the rowing game. Tune into one of those episodes, that will make you want to get out there and just be straight “dawgs”. The passion and ambition that this family has for the 9th seat position is truly out of this world!
New Zealand Olympic gold medalist Eric Murray is known for dominating in the men's pair with partner Hamish Bond. We know. You might be saying: “An Olympian? I thought you were all about celebrating the everyday rower!” We are. And we always will be. But we have to admit that when Eric reached out and asked to be on the podcast, we had a total fan moment. There was no doubt we'd invite him for a chat. From humble beginnings as an awkward teenage athlete, Eric quickly discovered that being 6'5” translated into impressive erg splits. Coaches noticed too, and he soon found himself on the podium at U16 and U17 events. From there, it was a one way ticket to the national team, World Rowing Championships, and the Olympics. Between 2007 and 2015, a commitment to be the very best brought Eric four indoor rowing world records, eight World Rowing Championships, and two Olympic gold medals. Retired from flat water rowing since 2017, Eric is keeping himself very busy working with Concept2, the Asensei rowing app, and is a member of the World Rowing Indoor Rowing Commission. And if that wasn't enough, he recently took a turn as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. . Just a heads up: Eric does swear a bit in this episode ... . My guest today epitomizes what it means to follow a dream and to completely transform oneself into an olympic champion. Andrea Proske joins me for a discussion about her amazing life journey. At 27 years old, Andrea had very limited experience with team sport and although an active person by nature, she had never pursued excellence in her life through sport, let alone had never rowed in her life. At 27, She was working in the hotel industry at the time and had the opportunity to compete in her first Tough Mudder race. After this race, she became inspired to change her life and to find something new and challenging to tackle. As she says in this episode, she felt stuck in her life, not sure what to do. She wasn't sure what this new challenge was going to be, but would go on to give rowing a try and what a story this turned out to be as 3 short years later she earned herself a spot on the Canadian Women's National Rowing Team. In our conversation today, we unpack the roles of resilience and determination in Andrea's life and how she was able to overcome numerous obstacles throughout the 8 years that she took up the sport of rowing, including a serious accident in 2015. In Andrea's own words, Failing forward quickly became her motto…. she braved injuries, underperformance, the firing of an abusive head coach, falling out of the boat more times than she cares to admit, a global pandemic and a historic Olympic postponement. But along the way she learned valuable lessons on handling failure, burnout, uncertainty… and the power of sisterhood. On Friday, July 30th, Andre Proske's dreams came true as her and her team of 9 won Canada's first gold medal in rowing in nearly 20 years. In this episode, Andrea talks about the Tokyo Olympics and what life has been like since winning gold. She also shares the work she is doing now and what her biggest hopes are in moving forward in her life. Wherever you are in the world listening to this, I hope you find value in this discussion as there is so much that we can learn from Andrea's journey. About Andrea: In her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, Andrea Proshe was a member of the women's eight that won gold. It was Canada's first Olympic gold in any women's rowing event since Atlanta 1996 and the first gold in the women's eight since Barcelona 1992.As a club rower looking to break onto the national team in 2016, Proske attended her first international regattas in Amsterdam (Holland Beker) and London (Henley Royal Regatta). The highlight was winning the senior women's single sculls at the Henley and by the end of the year she was received her invitation to the national team. She first represented Canada on the senior international circuit in the double sculls with Gabrielle Smith in 2018. In their World Cup debut as a duo, they won silver in Lucerne. Later that summer, they finished sixth at the World Rowing Championships. They won another World Cup medal in 2019, this time a bronze in Rotterdam. They capped the season with a fourth-place finish in the double sculls at the world championships, qualifying the boat for Canada for Tokyo 2020.Connect With Andrea: Website: https://andreaproske.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/AndreaProskeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreaproske/
