Natalie and Vinny Cilurzo discuss the We Love LA wildfire relief collab beer, with Leah Scurto from PizzaLeah who is sitting in for Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon today. Andy Link will also join us on the phone from Common Space Brewery in Los Angeles. Herlinda Calling from England First, Herlinda Heras calls in from England where it is 1:00 in the morning. Herlinda was on this episode last year about the 2024 edition. She is there for her eleventh year judging the British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray, about a four-hour train ride north of London. There are 26 categories of pies and all but one are savory pies like fish pie, steak and kidney pie, cold pork pie and many more. This year there 879 pies and 167 judges. Herlinda was the only American judge and she even got an interview on the BBC. They judge in an 800-year-old former church. The English tradition of savory pies extends even to football, rugby and cricket clubs, which have their own team pies. As we would get a hot dog and a beer at a baseball game, they will get a hand pie and a beer for their day at the stadium or grounds. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Herlinda judged the steak and ale category which alone had 67 pies. There is even a gluten-free pie and a vegan pie. Shepherd's pie is different, that has mashed potatoes on it. These pies have to have a full crust on top and bottom. Appearance is important so the pies are decorated on top. The first thing they look for is a soggy bottom, which is a quick DQ. Visit our sponsor Pizzaleah in Windsor for the finest pizza menu and the most authentic flavors around!

It was a catalyst for us to become a more active part of creating safer spaces for everyone in the industry. Over the years, our relationship with breweries like HPB has helped start hard conversations about the realities of these spaces and how everyone can be a part of the change. If you are interested in our training, or learning more please visit breakingsilence.org/programming

West Coast pilsner is the subject of this month's roundtable, and we've assembled a talented cast of brewers to further the discussion. From the Firestone Walker Propagator brewhouse in Venice, California, Sam Tierney returns to the podcast. Highland Park Brewery founder Bob Kunz joins from their location in Los Angeles. And from Santa Cruz, California's Humble Sea Brewery, cofounder Nick Pavlina rounds out the panel. The topic is West Coast pilsner, and each make excellent examples the style, from Highland Park's award-winning Timbo Pils to Firestone Walker's Welcome to LA and Humble Sea's Santa Cruz Pils. Here, the brewers discuss: the challenge in building body and structure to balance hop loads in the lean beer simplifying malt bills and using domestic pilsner malt for higher attenuation finding better hop expression through restraint in the dry hop avoiding excessive malt complexity to allow the hops to shine layering in lower-alpha hops to build texture and support the fruitier modern hop notes selecting aroma hops for cohesion managing hop creep distinguishing West Coast pilsner from cold IPA and Italian-style pilsner And more. Bob's career in beer began as soon as he was old enough (?) to drink it, and he gives us the run down of his many influences (namely his tenure at LA OG Father's Office) throughout the decade his business plan for what would go on to become Highland Park Brewery colllected dust. The conversation applies the virtues of simplicity to everything from draft lists to mash tun design, and goes deep on both Highland Park's diverse lager program as well as their markedly honest and practical approach to brewing them. In addition to making the guys drool after a detailed breakdown of Timbo Pils, Bob also blows Noah's mind by revealing all his brewery's West Coast IPAs are brew with Weihenstephan lager yeast, all before sending it off the American way with the podcast's first ever Dodger's-centric Three Bay. ............ ................ .................................... ......................................Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

Timbo Pils by Highland Park Brewery is a West Coast Pilsner that uses more German influenced hops in the kettle which gives the beer a softer bitterness and a nice floral and earthy hop base. Mosaic and Citra is used for dry hopping to bring out the tropical west coast flavors of mango, riesling grapes, and passionfruit. Highland Park Brewery has a simple goal of making excellent beer in Los Angeles, CA. Their journey in beer focuses on good people, discovery, adventure, and, quite simply, fun. Their world of fresh hoppy beers, crisp lagers, bold stouts, and adventurous mixed culture fermentation is accompanied by unique processes, wacky microbes, and local ingredients among other things. For our third annual pilgrimage to Denver, we again recorded mere hours after the closing of GABF from our hotel room to recap the fest, share some interviews, and drink even more beer. We review beers from Weldwerks, Odd13, and Copper Kettle with some help from MC Johnsen of Worth A Thousand Beers. There are also interviews with a bevy of brewers: Neil Fisher from Weldwerks Brewing, Ryan Fields from Beachwood Blendery, Eric Larken from Odd13 Brewing, Jonathan Wakefield from J. Wakefield Brewing, Jeff Stuffings from Jester King Brewery, Bob Kunz from Highland Park Brewery, James Howat from Black Project Spontaneous and Wild Ales, and Jeremy Tofte from Melvin Brewing. We discuss our personal festival highlights, Illinois medal winners, non-festival events, the Hanson brothers, Party Chapazian, Schwimmer Vintage Ales, the Tappening, and Little Lemmy & Friends. But the beer professionals we interview share knowledge on branding, coolships, mixed fermentation, the interplay of art and beer, green bottle experiments, a parking spot barrel house, fermenting with weeds, upscaling problems, and some “high” stakes brewer bets. (It’ll all make sense in the end.) Season 2, Episode 46 – This week, beers from two of Los Angeles’ best breweries, Highland Park Brewery and Monkish Brewing Co.. We’re heading back to L.A. this week with two collaboration beers from Monkish Brewing Co. and Highland Park Brewery. These breweries are quickly becoming pillars of Los Angeles beer with their awesome farmhouse and sour ales. Highland Park Brewery and Monkish got together in what we consider a match made in beer heaven to make two collaboration beers, Cart Fetish and Pushin’ Carts. Monkish and Highland Park Beers Keeping with the theme of the show, we’re also drinking Monkish Brewing’s first foudre fermented beer, Haiku de Saison and one of our all time favs, Crux. From Highland Park Brewery, we’re drinking Yard Beer, an early favorite of Jason’s that’s pretty great. Exciting things are happening in Los Angeles beer. The beers that Monkish and Highland Park are brewing are nothing less than exceptional, varying from the classic SoCal hoppy IPA to funky and Belgian inspired sour beers. With breweries acquisitions becoming more commonplace, it’s nice to know that curious, innovative, and talented people will be there to keep craft beer going strong. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 2, Episode 31 – This week, we’re drinking a variety of Belgian-style ales because why the hell not. It truly is a great time in craft beer. The beers are this week’s show exemplify it. Crooked Stave, Jester King, Highland Park Brewery…damn.  We kick off the show with two beers from one of Los Angeles’ newest breweries, Highland Park Brewery. Highland Park is a local favorite of ours, and rightly so. They’re located near Eagle Rock Brewing and Golden Road Brewing Company, so making a trip so the somewhat out of the way brewery and tasting room at HP is well worthwhile.  Assorted Dope-Ass Brews Next up is the 2015 LA Beer Week collaboration beer, Unity. Unity was brewed at Smog City Brewing in Torrance, CA in collaboration with other local Los Angeles breweries. We also spend a bit of time talking about LA Beer Week’s Kickoff Celebration that Jason and Matt attended back in June. The final beer is a collaboration between Crooked Stave, Jester King, and Swiss brewery Brasserie Trois Dames. Matt randomly found this beer at a local shop near The Bruery, so of course, he bought it. I mean, you can’t go wrong, right? Until next week… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.  Beers from this week’s episode:Highland Park Brewery: UnculturedHighland Park Brewery: Slow MovesSmog City and LA Beer Week Breweries: UnityCrooked Stave, Jester King, and Brasserie Trois Dames: Cerveza Sin Frontera Direct A/V episodes: MP3 | Video Subscribe:iTunes: Audio / VideoRSS: Audio / VideoStitcher Support the show:PatreonPayPal 4B Social Media:FacebookTwitterInstagramFlickr Email 4B: feedback@fourbrewers.com
