This episode of the Mere Mortals book review covers 'The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe' by Douglas Adams. This is the 2nd book of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy trilogy and follows the adventure of Arthur, Ford, Zaphod and Trillian as they continue their random, absurd, highly illogical journey. The plot (if you can even call it that) is so zany and follows so little structure that each chapter could almost be read as a stand-alone short story. What comes out in the writing of Adams is the classic British deadpan humour and his unique gift with wordplay. A fun, forget the troubles of the world type of book. Hope you enjoy it as I did!
This week, we celebrate 15 years of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy film adaptation from 2005 starring Martin Freeman, Yasiin Bey, Zooey Deschanel, Alan Rickman, and Sam Rockwell. Plus, we talk the latest news in entertainment including AMC’s feud with Universal Pictures, Disney’s Star Wars social media gaff, Geoff Johns joining another Green Lantern...
Happy Friday! The world has turned upside down. Thankfully for us here at BLB, and for most of our listeners, books are a comfort. Unplugging from reality and getting lost in a story can deter your attention from everything that’s been going on. In today’s shorter episode, Yuli and Sam chat about Escapes in Literature. To match the world being upside down, we start off this episode backward with Besides Books. Next, we dive into each of our top escape books for when you are stuck at home. These are stories of nerve and endurance that continue to captivate readers. We might even read an entertaining excerpt to help suck you into a story! After intermission, we have a few quizzes to help us figure out what to read next. Make sure to check out Books Spotted, as sadly this will be our last one for a little while. Kales and Alyson finished The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Time to see if Kales' predictions came true!
MONSTER PARTY LOOKS AT THE LIGHTER SIDE OF SCI-FI! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, all share a deep love for speculative fiction. But making science fiction funny, or even amusing, is apparently not as easy as it looks. The MONSTER PARTY gang gets to the bottom of all this, with an episode featuring the on-the-nose title of... SCI-FI COMEDY!!! Following in the footsteps of the HORROR COMEDY episode we did a few years back, this podcast explores what makes a sci-fi comedy successful. We dissect the most obvious examples like SPACEBALLS, GALAXY QUEST, THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, THE ORVILLE, and RED DWARF, but also dive deep into some of the more obscure science fiction related comedies. As per usual, be ready to add a bunch more titles to your must see list! Helping us sift the futuristic fun from the fails, is a mega-talented filmmaker, actor, and comic book writer, who has brought us titles featuring such genre favorites as VAMPIRELLA, BETTIE PAGE, and ELVIRA! MONSTER PARTY is proud to welcome for the first time... DAVID AVALLONE! (THE SECRET DIARY OF BETTIE PAGE, DRAWING BLOOD, ZORRO: SWORDS OF BLOOD, ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK, DOC SAVAGE: RING OF FIRE, THE SHADOW) The future is going to be hilarious! Right? ...sigh.
Kales and Alyson read the first five chapters of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Kales makes predictions and Alyson tries not to give the end away.
John celebrates the life of actor STEPHEN MOORE, who died in early October 2019. Most famous for the voice of Marvin on A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and the Adrian Mole and Harry Enfield TV shows.
Jacob and Ryan pick up the hilarious, confounding first book of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy's five-book trilogy. (Don't panic. You read that correctly.)
On this episode of Philosophical Bones - Question 25 is: Who is This God Person Anyway? This question came from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, so we talk about the book a lot during this debate. We're always looking for more topics to debate, so if you'd like to submit a question, please send me an email at nerdybonescast@gmail.com, you can also message us on Instagram or Facebook.
Don't panic! This week, Connor and Dan dig into the humorous philosophy at play in Douglas Adams' celebrated science fiction farce, Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. If you haven't read the book, you will be spoiled, but, then again, this isn't really a book that can be spoiled in any way. It's always a fun read and it has a lot to say about the ridiculous venture of philosophy.

This week we’re talking Slartibartfast, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and Ford Prefect. No, we aren’t advertising for some weird diet shake, an odd new laundry detergent, or a car that ceased production in 1961…it’s just a few of the interestingly named characters from the 1981 BBC TV adaptation of THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. Ashley, a huge fan of the book series, wonders if one needs a live action version of a near perfect story. For Dave, who knew the story from books, radio and the series, his pick is pure nostalgia. Will it stand the test of time? Speaking of time, we’re recording this episode live-ish from GALLIFREY ONE 2019, the US’s largest fan-run DOCTOR WHO convention. We’ll rundown some of our favorite moments from the conference so far, plus give a brief history of how Dave and Ashley got into WHO in the first place. 01:50 - Dave’s Pick: Hitchhiker’s Guide37:05 - Gallifrey One 2019 Subscribe in iTunes, Android, or Spotify. This is part two of our two part trilogy on Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. This episode focuses on the Ultimate Question and the Ultimate Answer that are discovered in HHGTTU. Adam's underlying assumption that everything is ultimately meaningless finds support in Bible's book of Ecclesiastes. It's a fascinating portion of scripture that both agrees with Adam's view of the universe and points the way to move beyond the meaninglessness of the material universe. The Science Segment details the potential discovery of the strongest material in the universe: the heart of a dying star. Could Thor's hammer be closer to reality than we realize? https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/277383-nuclear-pasta-inside-neutron-stars-is-strongest-material-in-universe

Dave and James talk to the brilliant character actor from both Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and Blackadder, Geoffrey McGivern. He has many years of experience, reading and performing the scripts that writers sweat over and has gathered many many anecdotes along the way.

Mere seconds before the Earth is to be demolished by an alien construction crew, journeyman Arthur Dent is swept off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher penning a new edition of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."
By Grabthar's Hammer, What A Podcast gives tribute to recently deceased and beloved theater and film actor, Mr. Alan Rickman. From his villainous breakout roles as Die Hard's Hans Gruber and Robin Hood's The Sheriff of Nottingham, to his charming turns in Sense and Sensibility and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Alan Rickman captivated audiences with his Shakespearean charisma and mesmerizing voice.By Grabthar's Hammer once again celebrate Rickman's hilarious turn as Alexander Dane in Galaxy Quest. The crew also somehow stumbles upon an analogy between Rickman's resurgence as a fan-favorite for a new generation as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series and the band Green Day's equally interesting career trajectory. Hans Gruber is to Dookie as Severus Snape is to American Idiot. A bit of a stretch? You betcha.By Grabthar's Hammer, you shall be remembered, Alan Rickman.
Originally Broadcast 2011/08/12: Gaming has been changing a lot lately, and sometimes it's easy to forget just how much. When did video games start using "lives"? More importantly, when and why did they stop? With this changing, what does it mean to die in a game? Vinnk and SeanOrange examine the games that pioneered this mechanism, and take a look at when and why it started changing. Was it with games like Myst, or did adventure-style games always buck this trend? Has the fall of arcade gaming lead games to be easier, and therefore no longer need "lives"? The Super Bowl is still a totally relevant topic, right? Topics include: Packages, the Super Bowl halftime show, how good the actual game was until the end, Breaking Madden, Hitchhike's Guide, Spinal Tap, Amazon Prime, GameFly, Club Nintendo, and more!
Grant, Peter, and Branden are back at it! In news: Branden's read a book, Peter preemptively thanks everyone for an amazing time at Fear the Con, and Grant tries really hard not to make jokes about the episode number (and encourages everyone to read The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy instead.) Then we hit our main topic: Blessings and curses. We talk about what they are (and aren't); how they appear in Scripture and the history of Christianity; how they're often used in RPGs; and how to use them in interesting ways. Enjoy! Scripture: Genesis 12:1-3; Deuteronomy 11:26-29; Joshua 6:26; Psalm 109:6-15; Mark 11:12-14, 20-25

Davies was the director and producer of "More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS", the BBC's official 30th anniversary celebration for Doctor Who, but his connection to the worlds of Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and Blake's 7, made for a fascinating chat.
