The new 'Super Mario Bros. Movie' became the highest-grossing animated film of all time at the box office in less than a month from its release. Ed Skudder, the head of story at Illumination Entertainment, helped transform the script into the storyboards as the film prepared to be brought to the big screen. He joins Jacob to share the world behind the production of Illumination's latest hit. "I think Mario is maybe the best looking animated film I've ever seen in my life. And I know I worked on it, but I didn't animate it. But my God, it's like they're swinging for the fences." You can follow Ed here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jim and Jessie dive into the highly anticipated Super Mario Bros. movie as they get in touch with their inner nintendo fandom.
I look down at my keyboard typing this and in my periphery, see my Mario Bros. pajamas, covered with Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi (characters my 2-year-old excitedly points out to me despite not ever having played a Nintendo console). I think back to last night, after the post-credit scene of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE finished, and the amount of grown-ass men that left the theater at said time made me laugh. It still does. You've got a generational split in folks watching this movie - the kids who know Mario either from merchandise or Nintendo Switch games or these crusty fucks (myself included) who either raise these kids or know Mario from back when counting pixels was an effective marketing tool. What do I, a crusty fuck, want? I really just want the game. Give me a red-capped Italian plumber hopping on blocks and weirdly designed characters in service of a princess and the greater good and I'll be pretty much set. I think this movie gives me about 80% of that. Illumination Entertainment makes beautiful animations; that's almost undeniable. So when you give them over 40 years of a template from which to work off of, it's almost idiot-proof. Expand the visuals of a side-scrolling game into 3D movements. A clip's made the round on my Tiktok showcasing a level from New Super Mario Bros alongside its movie counterpart and it exemplifies this concept beautifully. I'm not totally sure who decided to add in some fish-out-of-water ideas and world-building that marks the escapades of the Mushroom Kingdom as squarely "not OUR WORLD" within this story. I'm sure some screenwriter was told to explain the nonsense for people who've never played a video game. Why would the Mushroom Kingdom rest its fate on a plumber? What's up with the high-pitched Italian stereotype of a voice? Why are Mario, Luigi and Peach the only human beings in the universe? It didn't matter to me as a child and it matters a lot less now. It's the element of video game adaptations that still, to this day, triggers my disappointed smirk. I don't need Sonic the Hedgehog to dimension-warp his way into San Francisco. I certainly don't need something similar from Mario (whose last name doesn't need to be a mystery because Lord knows I don't need a geneological examination of the Mario clan). I just need a good guy who loves his brother trying to save adorable living toadstool mushroomed strangers from a dragon. It's simple, and the sooner we get that, the sooner we'll get the best Mario movie. But for now? This is a good start. ...Could we seriously not have gotten Luigi's flutter jump or Peach's side-scrolling float? Ok, ok, I'm done. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow The Movies on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://boxd.it/Ptop Closing Song: "See You at Your Funeral" - PUP --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

In episode 162 of Film Focus, I share my thoughts on the highly anticipated video game adaptation; The Super Mario Bros. Movie! After being burned by the live-action film in 1993, Nintedno kept their properties under lock and key for decades until recently when they decided to give the Mario franchise a second chance, this time through the power of animation via Illumination Entertainment. And since that first trailer dropped, fans and casual audiences have become more and more hyped by the previews of this new adaptation of the world of Mario. So does it succeed or fail? Well, check out this spoiler-free review to find out! Indi produced the Film Focus Theme. Alaisdair, Nick & Pete go FULL SPOILERS with The Super Mario. Bros Movie. Now this is the 2023 animated film from Illumination Entertainment. Thanks to Universal Pictures, we were all able to see it early and bring you this podcast.
Illumination Entertainment's The Super Mario Bros. Movie is opening in theaters next month, and is looking like a surprisingly faithful, entertaining adaptation of the beloved video game characters. But it's not the first time Hollywood has tried this – thirty years ago, there was Super Mario Bros., a live-action adaptation starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper that wound up having almost nothing to do with the video games, bombed spectacularly at the box-office, and was weirdly dark, grotesque, and horny. It is one of the most bizarre films ever made, and has one of the most incredible, mind-boggling production histories we've ever seen. So on the eve of Mario returning to theaters in a more recognizable form, we thought now would be a good time to look back on the first attempt to bring the plumber to the big screen, and how this infamous cinematic trainwreck took form. On any given day he may be found performing on historical trombones and other bass instruments for period concert reconstructions to recording trombone for the latest Hollywood's motion picture or TV show, to managing orchestras for high profile clients and contracting musicians for global productions and recording sessions, to producing original music for the latest video game release with millions of viewers. In 2011, he founded Hollywood Scoring, which has quickly become one of the premiere music production companies in the industry. In addition to writing original music and bespoke compositions for a variety of global clients and brands and building stadium shows on all major continents, Hollywood Scoring also maintains and operates a state of the art scoring stage in the heart of Los Angeles. Mr Gladstone has been involved with the production of recording sessions and live music shows and events (both locally and global) for a variety of clients from NBC-Universal, Illumination Entertainment, Microsoft, Riot Games League of Legends, MiHoYo's Genshin Impact, Netflix, Paramount Productions, The Arcane anime series, Tencent Entertainment, Adult Swim, Macy's 4th of July Fireworks and Thanksgiving Parade, Disney Theme Parks, Blizzard Entertainment, National Public Radio, among others. As a trombonist and instrumentalist, he has performed with world class ensembles such as The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Santa Barbara Symphony, Juilliard 415, Tesserae Baroque, Musica Transalpina to name a few. He holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in music from The University of Southern California in trombone performance. He has studied with Byron Peebles, Jay Friedman, Ralph Sauer and Terry Cravens. Noah has been a brass instrument enthusiast since starting the trombone at age 12 and got into serious collecting in high school, under the mentorship of Byron Peebles, when he found his first Bach Mt Vernon 42 and Elkhart Conn 88H trombone and developed obsession of the art of musical instrument craftsmanship. He began working with Steve Ferguson at The Horn Guys Shop in 2001 and helped build that store in the early days, learning a lot about the instrument business along the way and making friends with trombonists from around the world. In 2010, he founded The Brass Ark, his own music store dedicated to the appreciation, collection, restoration and sales of the best new, vintage and used brasswind instruments. It was with this goal in mind, to offer a location where brass enthusiasts could buy, sell, trade and learn about these rare horns and accessories, represented by a seller who is not only an expert and enthusiast himself in the field of vintage brasswinds. He maintains and upkeeps a museum and collection of some of the finest trombones ever made, including many rarities which have become inspiration for new models and equipment brought to market in collaboration with Noah and various makers such as Stephen Shires, Bob Reeves, Markus Leuchter, Brad Close, Stephan Schmidt and others.

Hi Folks! For this bonus episode we listen to Elton John's song 'I'm Still Standing'. Released in 1983 on his album 'Too Low for Zero' this song has had somewhat of a resurgence in recent years thanks to Illumination Entertainment's 2016 film 'Sing'. We discuss how this is more then just a break up song and how we could all use a reminder sometimes that we, indeed, will still be standing! Of course we discuss the epic music video and Elton John's run in with none other then Duran Duran!?! **PARENTAL WARNING: Parts of this episode are unsuitable for children** This final episode closes out our series with guests, Jacinta and Louise, exposing the main problems with children’s movies and TV. Part 1: https://www.truerestoration.org/season-4-the-catholic-home-episode-8-the-battle-for-your-childs-soul-part-1/ Part 2: https://www.truerestoration.org/season-4-the-catholic-home-episode-9-the-battle-for-your-childs-soul-part-2/ If you thought those little yellow minions were just cute and harmless little creatures, then you will find our review of Illumination Entertainment’s, “Minions” extremely illuminating! The assessments of other seemingly harmless movies will also prove very eye-opening. From these ladies’ insightful analyses, it is established that some of these problems are unbelievably grave and exceedingly disturbing. However, this doesn't mean we have to all literally throw out the DVD player because there is some suitable material available. For those who want to utilize this medium we provide some examples of what we consider safe and good. For those who have made the decision to entirely avoid screen-viewing, we do not wish to entice you to go back on this decision because of a handful of exceptions. Rather, we commend you on a choice which is undoubtedly much wiser than the majority alternative of virtually carte blanche movie-viewing limited only by a ratings system which has no basis whatsoever on Catholic morality. Brace yourself to be shocked further at the incredibly horrible messages being systematically taught to today’s youth via the mainstream media! This time, we are joined by REAL HUMAN BING Melanie Peck to break down an important subject that’s only a bit late… Christmas! What’s it like to celebrate it in China? In this episode, Daniel deconstructs Illumination Entertainment's latest film The Grinch (2018), unveiling it for the cancerous trash it really is.
The mean, green Grinch is back in theaters, thanks to Benedict Cumbergrinch and the good people at Illumination Entertainment. We spend about 98 percent of this episode talking about the Grinch, and yes, at one point, Anthony does say the Grinch drinks piss. We're very sorry. Also, Genevieve definitely says "sledge" instead of "sludge" at one point. Enjoy and happy holidays!
Illumination Entertainment brings Dr. Seuss' beloved story to the modern age with 3D animation and the vocal talent of Benedict Cumberbatch. On today's episode, the guys discuss smart bandages, data security with fitness apps, and Captain Marvel. They also play a might game of Movie Quote Madness, and decide who to recast in some of their favorite films. Who ya gonna call? GOOSE BUSTERS! Facebook Bug Accidentally Unblocks Blocked People for around 800K Users It's hard to believe it, but it's true. Facebook had a privacy issue again. This time, there was a software bug that was active between May 29th and June 5th, which accidentally unblocked people who were previously blocked for around 800,000 users. The rise of the Smart Bandage According the an article on Engadget, researchers are working to refine a smart bandage that will monitor and treat chronic or slow healing wounds. A process which they hope will reduce amputations. Polar Fitness App a huge security risk? It seems like the popular fitness app has made it pretty simple to get some detailed information of any of it's users. Including active soldiers on active foreign military bases, potentially compromising extremely sensitive data. Billy Dee Williams to Return as Lando Calrissian in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX' Billy Dee Williams is poised to break out the capes as Lando Calrissian once again. Abrams‘ Star Wars: Episode IX. ‘Captain Marvel' Will Digitally De-Age Samuel L. Jackson by 25 Years We've known for a while now that Marvel's upcoming Captain Marvel takes place in the 1990s, which is how it avoids all the Infinity War stuff that's happened. It will be an origin story for Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), an air force pilot who gets embroiled in the middle of an intergalactic war between alien races the Kree and the Skrull and ends up gaining superpowers. We also knew that familiar Marvel faces Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) were on board, but how would Marvel be handling the looks of these characters? Through digital de-aging. This week, the elves venture into completely new territory while covering their first made-for-T.V. Christmas movie! Surprisingly, it’s not a Hallmark Original, but an ABC Family (before it was Freeform) Original that debuted during it’s 25 Days of Christmas programming block back in 2001: Three Days. While Julia, Thom, and Anthony are all over the map in what they think about the overall quality of this movie starring Kristin Davis, Reed Diamond, and Tim Meadows, they’re in agreement about the fact that it’s quite depressing for a Holiday story, and have fun picking apart script flaws and directorial choices. In addition, the hosts discuss the brand new poster, trailer, and plot synopsis released for Illumination Entertainment’s upcoming 2018 film Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the elves dive back into the world of Rankin/Bass at the request of two listeners who suggested they review 1981’s The Leprechauns’ Christmas Gold. Though discussion of the made-for-television movie is short, and lacking in holiday cheer – Julia, Thom, and Anthony are all in agreement that it’s not a Christmas movie – it is nevertheless a fun discussion, as they bond over their shared confusion over Leprechaun lore and fright for Old Mag the Hag amongst many other topics; Thom even gets a moment to educate Julia and Anthony that Christmas in Killarney is actually a real song – and a good one at that! In addition, the hosts briefly discuss Illumination Entertainment’s upcoming film Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, Walt Disney’s upcoming movie The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, unanimously agree about which host would be which Christmas ghost in A Christmas Carol, and gush over their personal favorite Christmas tree ornaments. If you want additional content, you’re in luck, because the elves’ conversation on the 1985, cult-classic movie Clue is now available on Patreon – check it out! https://www.patreon.com/tisthepodcast

Super Bowl! En we bespreken de trailer van Ant-Man and the Wasp. Bad Boys for Life is nu echt in een vastomlijnde planning en er is sprake van een samenwerking tussen Nintendo en Illumination Entertainment. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In Episode 56 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Freddy Yaniz catch up some popular recent releases, namely writer/director Edgar Wright's pseudo-action musical Baby Driver and Illumination Entertainment's latest Minion-fest Despicable Me 3. Then, it's on to the battle between humans and apes in the trilogy-capping War for the Planet of the Apes. Andy Serkis reprises his lead role as ape leader Caesar -- thanks to the miracle of motion-capture technology -- as the character faces a fearsome new adversary in The Colonel (Woody Harrelson). Of course, this marks the ninth entry in the long-running Planet of the Apes franchise, but director Matt Reeves' film truly marks a conclusion to the storyline that began in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes and continued in Reeves' own Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. But will this third installment in the rebooted series be its finest hour yet? War for the Planet of the Apes synopsis courtesy of 20th Century Fox: In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

HoLy PiPeRoNi! STEVE CARELL part 2!!!! OK, lemme back up for you guys! Yesterday was the MeGa-AwEsOmE world premiere for Despicable Me 3! It’s the third installment (we’ll count Minions as a separate one) in the most despicable cartoon franchise of them all (you know, in that universe where despicable means ultra-kewl-major)! If you’ve been watching Piper’s Picks, you probably saw our first interview with Steve Carell! People always ask what celebrities are like in person. Well, Steve is really super genuine and nice, just like he seems like he’d be. So, it’s really great to interview someone like that! Oh yeah, he’s funny too! His alter-ego (or alter egos in this case) are pretty kewl too, even if they are balancing between good and evil. In Despicable Me 3, Steve Carell is working double-duty playing Gru and his blonde twin brother Dru! There’s a new car too…a despicamobile! They actually had one at the premiere. I sat in it…the security dog sat in it…the other security dog would not sit in it. Anyway, let’s move on. Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures did some really kewl stuff for the big day. So, as a special bonus and a way to get these interviews out fast, we decided to add on a special extra interview to this episode with one of Gru’s 3 favorite kids, Edith! It’s my first interview with Dana Gaier! Edith is the super-cute middle child who seems to have just a touch of that middle-child syndrome, then ratcheted up some! Wait until you hear how long Dana has been voicing Edith for! Time moves fast! Speaking of…let’s get on with the episode!

The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva and Chad Riley, debate whether Illumination Entertainment's new film, Sing (2016), hits a high note or falls a bit flat. Sing features a stellar vocal cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Taron Egerton, Scarlett Johansson, Tori Kelly and Seth MacFarlane. News items include the death of “Princess Leia” actor Carrie Fisher and a first look at the Alien: Covenant (2017) trailer from director Ridley Scott.

From the creators of the Despicable Me series (Illumination Entertainment)comes the Secret Life of Pets. This was a very enjoyable film with a lot of heart and beautiful animation. There were some story beats and that weren't fully developed and were convenient at time but an overall fun movie. My overall score is 7/10. On this episode I have a special guest, Sonya. Her overall score is 6.5/10. We go a little more in depth in this episode. Give it a listen. Did you see Secret Life of Pets? What did you think? 250 artists from 25 countries around the world come together to work on a moving CG animated film about a little girl caught in the horrors of world war II in the town of Trento, Italy. The film is called Mila. Mila is the story of a girl and two women during Trento’s bombing in 1943. Writer and Director Cinzia Angelini says: "I wanted to tell a war story not centered on armies, soldiers, generals, battle plans. I wanted to talk about civilians, and especially the children. The girl who inspired me to create this movie was a child during WWII. That girl is my mother." Cinzia Angelini has worked as an animator and story artist in feature productions for more than twenty years. Her resume includes work at Dreamworks, and later followed a path leading to collaborations with all of the major studios in Hollywood. Cinzia is now a story artist at Illumination Entertainment. Her work includes “Prince of Egypt”, “Eldorado”, “Spirit”, “Sinbad”, “Spider-man 2″, “Open Season”, “Meet the Robinsons” and “Bolt”, the “How to train your Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda” DVD specials, as well the Universal Theme Park ride for Despicable Me, “Minions Mayhem”. Her most recent work includes “Minions”, and several other feature productions coming soon. Also joining in the conversation is Mila producer Andrea Emmes. Andrea been in the entertainment industry for over twenty years as both a performer and in production. Starting in theater, she began her career as a singer/dancer at Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Hollywood, Trinity Arts Center, as a choreographer for “Little Kids Dance Party”, casting/production assistant for “Making the Band: O-Town” and then finally made her way to Los Angeles, CA. After a couple of years working in the video game industry as a production coordinator for Bento Box and game designer for Disney Interactive, Andrea now spends her time as producer for Mila and working as an Audiobook Narrator.
