Show Notes: Peter Schmidt talks about his senior year during the Iraq War, and how the news on the problem of jobless recovery led him to consider graduate school.  The Journey from Student to Dean Peter studied biomechanics at Cornell, focusing on the mathematics of biological systems and modeling clinical trials in orthopedics. He was admitted into  a fellowship program in New York at an orthopedic  hospital where he worked on total joint replacement.  His career path led him to neuroscience, where he led clinical research and worked for a nonprofit before becoming the vice dean of a medical school. He then moved on to running clinical trials and drug development.  A Focus on Parkinson's Disease Pete shares his interest in Parkinson's disease and explains that Parkinson's affects a tractable part of the brain, the basal ganglia, which is easier to model mathematically. He enjoys thinking about neuronal signaling and the microstructure of the brain, which helps in understanding the macro structure. Pete's PhD work involved modeling bone at the cellular level, and he applies similar thinking to the basal ganglia in Parkinson's disease. Research on Neurodegenerative Diseases Pete discusses the challenges in determining whether a question in neurodegenerative diseases is a question of science or engineering. He explains the historical focus on stem cells and extracellular proteins as solutions for diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Pete emphasizes the need to understand the role of extracellular proteins and the importance of scientific inquiry. He mentions the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of prion diseases and the subsequent focus on characteristic proteins in neurodegenerative diseases, which led to initiatives focused on proteins.  The Brain's Micro and Macro Structures Pete discusses the current focus on extracellular proteins and the challenges in proving their role in diseases like Parkinson's. He mentions the drug Lecanemab for Alzheimer's, which slows the disease but does not reverse it. Pete predicts that future research will focus on intracellular proteins and the need to restore lost cells in the brain. He highlights the importance of understanding the microstructure to inform the macro structure of the brain. The Logistics of Running Clinical Trials Pete explains that success in clinical trials is more about logistics than science, with 90-95% of the work being logistical. He discusses the challenges of recruiting subjects and the importance of working with academic medical centers that have a high volume of patients. Pete emphasizes the need for fast-moving ethics boards and efficient contracting to ensure the success of clinical trials. Incentives for Physicians When asked about the incentives for physicians to participate in clinical trials, Pete explains that most physicians are driven by scientific interest rather than financial incentives. He mentions the importance of academic leaders who can influence the participation of residents and fellows in trials. Pete highlights the passion of physicians in diseases like Huntington's and cystic fibrosis, which drives their engagement in research. The Role of Pharma Companies in Clinical Trials Pete talks about his role at East Carolina University where he oversaw clinical care and research at the medical school. He discusses the changing role of pharma companies in running clinical trials. He explains that many drugs are now discovered in labs, leading to a shift in the need for pharma companies to own their data. Pete mentions the issue of trial fraud, where fake patients are used to inflate data, and the importance of tighter control over trial data. He shares his experience of rescuing a trial from fraudulent data and the challenges of identifying such issues. Life on the Family Farm The conversation turns to Pete's family life, and Pete shares that his youngest child recently went to college, and he inherited a family farm that has been in his wife's family for 200 years. He enjoys working with his hands, doing woodworking, and using a skid steer for various tasks on the farm. Pete describes his role as the farm handyman, fixing things and maintaining the farm equipment. Harvard Reflections Pete mentions taking a quantum mechanics course and a material science class with X-ray interferometry. He highlights the impact of a physics class on fits and tolerances, which taught him about the importance of clearance and interference fits. Pete also shares his experience taking a folklore course with his roommate, which was his only pass/fail course at Harvard.  Pete explains the concept of fits and tolerances in engineering. He discusses the importance of understanding whether a fit needs to be tight or loose and planning accordingly. Pete uses examples from finance to illustrate the principle of having a cushion in budgeting. He emphasizes the need to know the target fit (tight or loose) to optimize engineering and design solutions. There's a silent war being waged on our creative lives, but it's not the obvious enemies we expect. In this episode, we dive deep into the invisible threats constraining our creativity—both inside organizations and in the culture at large.First, we speak with Cassie McDaniel, VP of Design at Medium, about the art of protecting creative space in a business world that increasingly values efficiency over deep thinking. She shares how real leadership involves building trust, creating the right constraints, and translating between the language of creativity and the demands of the organization. Cassie's journey—nonlinear, multifaceted, and deeply intentional—reminds us that creativity thrives on diversity of experience and a strong sense of purpose.Next, we're joined by Peter Schmidt, Program Director at the Struthers School of Radical Attention and co-editor of Attensity. Peter introduces the provocative metaphor of "human fracking" to describe how our attention is being mined, fragmented, and monetized by the platforms we use daily. He argues that protecting our attention is no longer a personal discipline issue but a societal one, requiring collective action and a movement to reclaim the diverse, nuanced ways of being present in the world.Together, these conversations meet at a critical crossroads: How do we defend and cultivate the inner conditions for creative work amid constant digital distraction and systemic forces designed to keep us fragmented?Five Key Learnings from This EpisodeConstraints Foster Creativity: True creative freedom is built on transparent boundaries, supportive organizational structures, and clearly communicated expectations.Invisible Efficiency Matters: The most valuable creative processes are often “invisibly efficient”—they look messy or inefficient from the outside but are essential to breakthrough results.Leadership is Relational, Not Just Operational: Protecting creative space is less about enforcing rules and more about developing trust, negotiating for time, and translating needs between teams. Our Attention Is Systematically Farmed: The battle for our attention is not simply about willpower; we're up against trillion-dollar industries engineered to fragment and monetize our focus.Artists and Dreamers Lead the Defense: The recovery of deep, diverse forms of attention—beyond the narrow “attention span” model—depends on the activism of artists, educators, and anyone daring enough to imagine a different future.Get full interviews and bonus content for free! What if God isn't impressed with our religious habits and pietism? For seventy years, the people of Judah thought they were doing the right thing by sticking to a solemn tradition they started themselves. It was a yearly memorial filled with mourning and weeping over the destruction of the temple. But, seeing as how they were rebuilding the temple, they asked God for a break from this ritual. His response turned their question around on them. He asked why they were performing the ritual in the first place—for God or for themselves? When we keep traditions and ceremonies not commanded by God, do we have the right motivation?  The Rev. Peter Schmidt, pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church and School in Waukesha, WI, , joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Zechariah 7 and 8.  To learn more about Beautiful Savior, visit beautifulsaviorwaukesha.org. The Persian king Cyrus issues an astonishing decree: the exiles may go home. Among them are the Jews—God's chosen people—whom this pagan ruler not only repatriates, but commands to rebuild the temple of the Lord. Ezra 1–4 tells of their return, the joy of restored worship, and the crushing opposition that brings construction to a standstill. Then the prophets Haggai and Zechariah speak with God's authority, calling His people to courage, repentance, and hope. In Ezra 5–8 the temple is completed, worship flourishes, and hearts are renewed in God's Word. This series on Thy Strong Word follows the events in the order they happened, revealing how the Lord moves kings and prophets, overcomes opposition, and restores His people. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Killer Innovations: Successful Innovators Talking About Creativity, Design and Innovation | Hosted by Phil McKinney

In a world obsessed with digital tools and AI-generated solutions, it's easy to forget the original engines of creative transformation—our hands, our senses, and the objects we manipulate. Sure, artificial intelligence can analyze patterns faster than we can blink. But if you're searching for that breakthrough moment that flips a challenge on its head, you're better off reaching for physical thinking tools. These tactile instruments engage your mind in ways algorithms can't, triggering insight through perception rather than prediction. The real secret? These thinking tools aren't new. They're rooted in centuries-old traditions that redefined how humanity thinks, creates, and innovates. Let's explore seven modern physical tools that will do more for your creativity than any AI assistant can. Why Thinking Tools Matter More Than Ever Ideas didn't just power the Scientific Revolution—it was driven by instruments. Galileo's telescope didn't just reveal Jupiter's moons; it shattered humanity's view of its place in the universe. These early thinking tools—from telescopes to barometers—reshaped knowledge and the very act of knowing. Today, we stand at another inflection point. AI is fast and efficient, but it often reinforces existing patterns. Physical thinking tools can break those patterns entirely because they engage your senses. 7 Modern Thinking Tools That Will Improve Your Creativity 1.     Oblique Strategy Cards Created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt, these cards prompt creative detours like "Use an old idea" or "Emphasize the flaws." The physical act of drawing a card makes the moment memorable and sets a deliberate tone—something a digital prompt can't replicate. 1.     Killer Questions Card Deck Instead of telling you what to do, these cards ask questions that reroute your brain—like "What if our biggest competitor became our best customer?" The power is in the pause they create before action. 2.     Innovation Dice Roll a constraint—"reduce cost by half," "change your timeline"—and you're instantly rethinking your assumptions. It's randomized pressure with a creative twist. 3.     Tangible Problem Mapping Kits Use physical tokens to represent pain points, users, and interactions. Moving these around on a table reveals patterns you wouldn't notice on a spreadsheet. 4.     Metaphor Objects Want your app to "work like a Swiss Army knife"? Use real objects to represent abstract ideas. This builds instant understanding in group settings. 5.     Decision Wheels They look like toys, but they cut through indecision with surprising clarity. Spinning a physical wheel turns choices into commitments. 6.     Material Libraries Touching different fabrics, metals, or plastics triggers sensory thinking. Sometimes, a breakthrough comes from texture—not text. Thinking Tools Create the Right Kind of Friction Physical thinking tools slow you down just enough to notice the details. That pause is powerful. It invites reflection and allows your brain's deeper, less conscious mechanisms to get involved. You're no longer reacting—you're reimagining. Unlike AI, which excels at finding answers fast, these tools force you to linger in the question. That's where insight lives. Build Your Thinking Toolkit Start small: Try just one tool for a week. Make it yours: Create custom cards or metaphor objects. Involve others: Collaboration multiplies their power. Create rituals: Use them before big decisions or creative sessions. Final Thoughts If you're serious about creativity, you need tools that challenge, not just optimize. Physical thinking tools aren't relics—they're essential. They help us reframe, reconnect, and ultimately reimagine what's possible. Subscribe to the YouTube channel for more creativity, innovation, and problem-solving episodes. Want to support this content and get exclusive perks? Join the community over on Patreon. Creativity doesn't come from having all the answers. It comes from asking the right questions—and sometimes, from rolling the right die. Keep creating, keep experimenting—and above all, keep thinking differently.

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - There was a familiar face behind the Wild Things Seafood booth at Manson's Friday Market last week. In addition to being our former Regional Director, Noba Anderson's family has a connection to Cortes Island that stretches back to 1978. So Cortes Currents asked Noba about the new business she is undertaking with Peter Schmidt. “It's Peter's passion, there's no doubt about that. Peter owned his first fishing boat when he was a teenager off Saturna Island and has been fishing on and off with his own boat in younger years, and then on other people's boats more recently. So last year he was out on a tuna boat and took his payment in fish rather than money and had it processed. You can't just sell tuna, so then he bought some other things and went on the road last winter,” she explained.   “Then I started  getting a few things from his supplier and went to Denman and Hornby islands last winter, just once a month kind of thing.  We teamed up more considerably this spring and summer season.” Cortes Currents: How did you come up with a name for your enterprise? Noba Anderson: “Wild Things Seafood? -  Peter came up with it. It speaks to the fact we only carry wild products, only BC products and that great old book ‘Where The Wild Things Are,' just a little bit of play.”   “We set up in the Comox Valley for May and June, but we either didn't do enough marketing or whatever. It didn't really pan out as fast as we needed it to.” “So we pivoted and we've been  selling on six Gulf Islands every week all summer. Hornby,  Denman, Gabriola, Salt Spring, Pender and Maine, and then the odd little place in between and then having one day to  recharge and regroup and restock. So we direct source as cash flow and storage allows.” Cortes Currents: So you sleep on the road? Noba Anderson: “When we're on the road, we sleep in the fish truck.  We carry four big freezers full of product, generators, and rope to the front bumper. It's a traveling fun show a la Pete for sure.”

A i v tomto případě tragicky zemřel jeden z novomanželů. Postupem času vyšlo najevo, že se za těmito zdánlivými nehodami skrývá mnohem víc. Vyšetřování, které se rozpoutalo napříč několika zeměmi a kontinenty, nakonec přineslo šokující odhalení.

How easy it is to misuse Scripture! Jesus says, “Bear fruit in keeping with repentance” (Mark 1:15). Just as we learned that repentance is contrition combined with faith, we also understand that the LORD bears fruit through repentance. The Holy Spirit works through us to bear this fruit— it is not a requirement of our salvation. Christ has made full satisfaction for sin so that we can serve our neighbors in freedom and for their sake! We need not add the Law or human traditions to obtain a clear conscience. “The King of Love my shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am His And He is mine forever.” LSB 709, st. 1 Rev. Peter Schmidt, pastor at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Waukesha, WI, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to discuss Confession and Satisfaction. How Much Could Your Cull Cows Be Worth

Ranch It Up

We share tips on how to manage your cull cows and bulls to maximize your dollars.  Cultivated and lab grown meat hit the news as more and more states push to shut down the selling of lab grown meat.  We have market reports, news you need to hear, horse sale updates and lots more all wrapped into this episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 173 DETAILS Up to 20 percent of a producer's income can come from the marketing of cull cows and bulls.  But we need to manage them a certain way to maximize the profit potential, especially with markets being as high as they are.  Michaela Clowser, The Director of Producer Education from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association joins us to introduce the Right Way, Right Time program. Alabama has become the latest U.S. state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins.  The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law.  Many other states are trying to pass such legislation.   Meat sales have been strong thus far in 2024 as beef margins shrink for the packer.  We have all the details.   RIGHT WAY, RIGHT TIME For cattle producers across the country, whether beef or dairy, cull cattle are part of doing business. Animals age, they no longer breed back, and their health deteriorates. Incorporating culling decision guidelines into an operation's best management practices benefits both animal welfare as well as the producer's bottom line. Animal well-being must be considered in every decision made throughout the animal's life. Cull cattle, while being removed from the herd, are an untapped market for producers. It's estimated that sales of market cows and bulls contribute up to 20% of operational gross revenue for beef operations.1 According to Derrell Peel with Oklahoma State University, “It is possible to increase the value of cull cows by 25 to 45 percent or more by improving cull cow management and marketing.” According to the 2022 National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA), the market cow and bull sector provides an alternative product and a secondary value to animals once their original purpose is no longer suitable. When it comes to product fabrication, market cows and bulls are typically associated with ground beef production. However, over time, the industry has realized that some market cows and bulls have the potential to yield valuable primals to be fabricated and sold as retail cuts and to the restaurant trade. Even though cull animals are often viewed as a loss, with effective planning, these animals can be a significant source of revenue and should not be overlooked. In essence, cull cattle are market cattle. This document addresses key problem areas, provides strategies for making timely culling decisions, and is designed to help producers examine the opportunity to capture more value through effective management regarding cull cattle. COW COUNTRY NEWS Alabama has become the latest US state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law. Senators in Alabama have passed a bill to ban cultivated meat from being sold. Sponsored by Senator Jack Williams, Senate Bill 23 makes it a Class C felony to manufacture, sell or distribute cultivated meat in the southern state. If you're the owner of a restaurant hoping to offer cultivated meat to patrons, you could be convicted and your establishment could have its food safety permit suspended or even revoked. Alabama is far from the only state hoping to limit the cultivated meat sector. Florida has introduced two bills hoping to ban the production, sale, holding and distribution of cultured meat within the state. One of them suggests imposing criminal penalties – including facing misdemeanors of the second degree, fines of $500 to $1,000, and license suspensions or stop-sale orders – on anyone violating these rules. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill requiring clear labelling of plant-based and cultivated meat, seafood and egg products, while Nebraska's Real MEAT Act would mandate the word “imitation” on alternative protein if passed. Policymakers in Tennessee are making their case for a $1M fine as part of its proposal to outlaw cultured meat. An Arizona House representative drafted HB 2244, a bill that would make it illegal to “intentionally misbranded or misrepresent” an alternative meat product as meat, while David Marshall went a step further with HB 2121, attempting to ban the sale or production of cultured meat. On similar grounds, Wisconsin State Assembly representative Peter Schmidt proposed two bills against alternative protein, one of which put restrictions on the labelling of cultivated meat. In Iowa, a state senate subcommittee unanimously advanced a bill that would require labels on what the proposal calls “manufactured meat” to outline the sources of the products. Just last month, senators Mike Rounds and Jon Tester proposed a federal bill to ban these proteins in school meals.  Strong Start To The Year For Meat Sales In January 2024, beleaguered consumers received some good news with the USDA predicting a slight reduction in grocery prices in 2024. Additionally, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization announced that its food price index is at the lowest level in three years. However, rising labor and other operational costs have been eroding margins and the USDA expects restaurant prices to continue their fourth-quarter increase in 2024. January restaurant engagement was flat, with 80% of consumers having dined at restaurants or ordered takeout or delivery, according to the Circana survey of primary grocery shoppers. The home-cooked share of meals also continued to average around 78% to 80% for most households. When shopping for groceries, the survey found that 81% of consumers applied one or more money-saving measures in January, led by looking for sales promotions (53% of households), cutting back on non-essentials (40%) and looking for coupons (33%). Beef Margins Shrink For Packers Beef and pork packer margins have been seeing a decline as of late.  Beef packers experienced a decline in margins by as much as $49 per head, resulting in a loss of as much as $70 per head.  Annual projections for 2024 show an improvement in packer margins compared to the current week, with indications of a slightly better outlook for packers in the long term.     UPCOMING BULL SALES ANGUS CHAROLAIS HEREFORD GELBVIEH BALANCER RED ANGUS SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS Chestnut Angus Farm: February 25, 2024, Pipestone, Minnesota Eichacker Simmentals: March 1, 2024, Salem, South Dakota Mason Angus & SimAngus: March 2, 2024, Broken Bow, Nebraska Pederson Broken Heart Ranch: March 6, 2024, Firesteel, South Dakota Mar Mac Farms: March 6, 2024, Brandon, Manitoba Leland Red Angus & Koester Red Angus: March 8, 2024, Beach, North Dakota RBM Livestock: March 10, 2024, Florence, South Dakota Sundsbak Farms: March 16, 2024, Des Lacs, North Dakota Hidden Angus: March 17, 2024, Sebeka, Minnesota Vollmer Angus Ranch: April 2, 2024, Wing, North Dakota BULL SALE REPORT & RESULTS Churchill Cattle Company Van Newkirk Herefords Gardiner Angus Ranch Cow Camp Ranch Jungels Shorthorn Farms Ellingson Angus Frey Angus Ranch Edgar Brothers Angus Schaff Angus Valley Prairie Hills Gelbvieh Clear Springs Cattle Company CK Cattle Mrnak Hereford Ranch Frey Angus Ranch Hoffmann Angus Farms Topp Herefords River Creek Farms FEATURING Michaela Clowser Director of Producer Education National Cattlemen's Beef Association https://www.ncba.org/ @BeefUSA   Kirk Donsbach: Stone X Financial https://www.stonex.com/   @StoneXGroupInc      Mark Van Zee  Livestock Market, Equine Market, Auction Time https://www.auctiontime.com/ https://www.livestockmarket.com/ https://www.equinemarket.com/ @LivestockMkt @EquineMkt @AuctionTime   Shaye Koester Casual Cattle Conversation https://www.casualcattleconversations.com/ @cattleconvos Questions & Concerns From The Field? Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

This was recorded in 1981, in my bedroom at my parents' house. The synth is an ARP Solus overdubbed two or three times on a broken cassette deck. I was obsessed with Brian Eno's "Discreet Music" (obviously) at the time. Equally obvious: the title of this track is taken from an Oblique Strategies card (Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt's deck of "over one hundred worthwhile dilemmas").  Most of the other sounds are from an elementary school recess across the street from my house. You can also hear wind chimes from my patio. Unfortunately, also audible is the woman next door yelling at her child for 10 seconds or so. This was not planned. Other than the latter, I used to find the sounds of the kids playing across the street to be soothing. I was working long hours at a record store all day, then going to see live music at night, and was often sleep-deprived. I recall taking naps in the middle of the day, and falling asleep to the sounds of the school yard and the wind chimes, as well as light airplanes overhead (Long Beach Airport was just west of our home).  Recorded by Funharm. My guest for this episode is Hans Peter Schmidt. He goes by Peter Schmidt, and he is a director and faculty member for the Ithaka Institute,  an international network for carbon strategies and climate farming, and he farms and makes wine from the amazing Mythopia wine-ecosystem in Switzerland, which he also uses as a research vineyard for the Ithaka Institute. He's also involved in other winegrowing projects around southern Europe, and has a pretty big reputation for his approach to wine. In this interview we cover viticulture, winemaking, and the philosophy of wine. Peter may be the most non-interventionist – or natural or naturalistic – winemaker I've ever encountered. You may think him strange for some of the things he does with wine, and you may think him mad for some of the things he doesn't do. You'll hear how these things are even possible. Hint: it has to do with mindset as much as ecology. Peter makes wine in a way that, once you hear its simplicity, could revolutionize your own winemaking. If you end up making wine in the way that Peter does, Peter only requests that you send him a bottle to thank him for the idea… a sort of intellectual property royalty payment.  I for sure at least want to try a batch of wine the way Peter makes – or really doesn't make it.   Peter ends the conversation with a perspective, or really a meditation, or how wine fits into the human story. Like so much of this conversation, it merely scratches the surface and gives a glimpse of many beautiful things that we can begin to explore. Rebecca Cohn, trained pediatric physical therapist, international management consultant, elected California State Assembly member, lawyer, and Texas rancher, joins Yo as guest co-host to discuss the book, Bittersweet, by Susan Cain. This book like Atlas of the Heart (Episodes 15, 16, 17), offers us grounded research and a depth of understanding that finds us often saying to ourselves: “At last – someone gets me and who I am and have always been”. Here are some of the questions we covered in Part 2: What music would be on our bittersweet playlist? What movies transport us to other places? Why do we find these songs and movies so appealing? What artist has been most influential in understanding the bitter sweetness of life? Bittersweet playlists: Rebecca's: K.D. Cohn was founder and Chair of the committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media. She was the Chair of Health Committee, a member of Public Safety, and the Utilities and Commerce Committees as well. Cohn was instrumental in the development of the state's Medical Examiner competency exam and the establishment of treatment guidelines. She has been active on other boards including: the American Physical Therapy Association's Advisory Panel on Women, the Diversity Task Force of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, the Santa Clara Board of Supervisor's Domestic Violence Council, and the Board of Directors for the Support of Battered Women. On a personal note, Rebecca lives in Fredericksburg, Texas, with her long-time partner, Peter Schmidt. In this episode you'll hear: things you really need to know to navigate graduate school, why there's a hidden curriculum, and a discussion of the book A Field Guide to Grad School. Our guest is: Dr. Jessica McCrory Calarco, an Associate Professor of Sociology at Indiana University in Bloomington. She is the author of A Field Guide to Grad School: Uncovering the Hidden Curriculum (Princeton, 2020), and Negotiating Opportunities: How the Middle Class Secures Advantages in Schools (Oxford 2018). Her research examines inequalities in education and family life, which she has written about for The New York Times, The Atlantic, Inside Higher Ed, and The Conversation. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, a historian of women, gender, and sexuality.
