Mick served as president of the Ohio Falconers Assocation for a long time, and is another falconer who has had to overcome a lot of physical wear and tear to continue in the sport. We talk about those things, as well as his thoughts on running Jack Russels before dachshunds, running his own falconry abatement and education businesses, and plenty of other good stuff! Dokken was formed in the late 1970s by vocalist Don Dokken. The band came into its own in the early ‘80s with the classic lineup of Don on vocals, George Lynch on guitar, Jeff Pilson on bass, and Mick Brown on drums. Their debut album, Breaking the Chains, released in 1981, didn't gain immediate traction but laid the foundation for what would become one of the more recognized names in melodic metal. The breakthrough came with Tooth and Nail in 1984, followed by Under Lock and Key and Back for the Attack. These albums produced a number of hits—songs like “Into the Fire,” “Just Got Lucky,” and “Alone Again”—which earned the band regular MTV rotation and a growing international fanbase. Don Dokken's vocals blended melody with grit, while George Lynch brought a technically aggressive and distinctive guitar style that played a major role in shaping their sound.By 1987, the band was touring with acts like Aerosmith and AC/DC and headlining their own arena shows. They also contributed the track “Dream Warriors” to the Nightmare on Elm Street 3 soundtrack, which gave them additional mainstream exposure. But with success came internal strain. The tension between Don Dokken and George Lynch was well-known and often spilled over into the band's creative process. The two had what could be described as a musical cold war, and while that friction helped define their sound, it also led to the band's breakup in 1989.Over the decades that followed, the band went through multiple lineup changes. Don remained the frontman and creative anchor. Since the early 2000s, guitarist Jon Levin has held the guitar spot, earning respect from fans for honoring the original material while also bringing his own energy to the band.In 2023, Dokken released a new album, Heaven Comes Down. The album stayed true to the band's identity while incorporating more modern production elements. The songwriting remained melodic and direct, and it was generally well-received by long-time listeners. Notably, three songs recorded during those sessions didn't make the final tracklist. Don has mentioned the possibility of releasing those as part of a future EP.There has also been increasing interest in the reconnection between Don and George Lynch. Though there's no formal reunion, George has appeared onstage with Don several times in recent years. The chemistry appears to be intact, and the two have expressed mutual respect in recent interviews. Whether this leads to a new song, a studio collaboration, or something more remains to be seen.Dokken continues to tour and record, and despite the changes and challenges over the years, the band remains active. Whether you've been following them since the ‘80s or just discovering them now, Dokken's music still resonates—and their story is still being written.

In this episode we're joined by NME legend Chris Salewicz, author of acclaimed books about Bob Marley, Joe Strummer and others. We hear about our guest's boyhood in Yorkshire — and about the first gig he ever saw: the Beatles in Leeds in 1963 (followed in rapid succession by the Rolling Stones — plus a young David Bowie — in Huddersfield). Chris then describes how a move to London in the early '70s led to getting his foot in the door at Let It Rock and then, in 1974, at the indispensable New Musical Express. Discussion of the culture at the NME — sprinkled with yarns about such colleagues as Mick Farren,  Tony Tyler and Tony Stewart — prompts recollections of Chris' interviews with Jimmy Page (in 1977) and Prince (in 1981)... and culminates in the moment he opted to quit the paper for pastures new. A digression on Supertramp's 50-year-old Crime of the Century sparks a passionate defence of that unfairly maligned ensemble by 28-year-old Jasper Murison-Bowie. Jumping forward to the 21st century, we hear wonderful clips from Gavin Martin's 2006 audio interview with the youngest member of the "27 Club" series Chris collected in his 2015 book Dead Gods. Our thoughts on the astounding talent and tragically short life of Amy Winehouse then follows. After Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces — Val Wilmer's 1967 interview with free-jazz trailblazer Archie Shepp; Mick Brown's 1975 encounter with Bakersfield country icon Buck Owens – Jasper concludes the episode with his thoughts on a piece about "hip hop's Mozart" J Dilla (2011). In his day job, he works as a journalist – reporting in detail on guru abuses – so we talk about the value of critical thinking, while considering the merits of genuine teachers, who can only awaken what's found in oneself.

Mick Brown wrote all about it in his fascinating book, Tearing Down the Wall of Sound: The Rise and Fall of Phil Spector. For early access to Crime Story episodes and to listen ad-free, subscribe to CBC's True Crime channel on our show page in Apple Podcasts.

She was our very first interviewee back in Episode 1 — and we finally reach the conclusion of Hazell Dean's Stock Aitken Waterman journey with her version of "Better Off Without You", which was released in 1991. The Queen of Hi-NRG joins us once again to discuss recording a song previously cut by Lonnie Gordon and her thoughts about the SAW sound struggling in the early '90s. Girl group Delage were also finding it hard to land a hit with original SAW tune "Running Back For More" missing the mark. Karina and Emma from the group return to chat about the track and Delage's metamorphosis into Eden once they left the Hit Factory. Pat Sharp and Mick Brown also pop in to talk about their 1991 charity cover, "Gimme Some", and we hear from Jason Donovan, Mike Stock and Sharon McPhilemy about "R.S.V.P." — the song that gave Jason's sound and image a makeover. We also look at his first foray into musical theatre and the ramifications of that on his working relationship with SAW.Subscribe for bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/sawTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @MrMattDenbyInstagram: @chartbeatsauFacebook: Chart Beats: A Journey Through PopEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

For women of a certain class, there was a tremendous romance attached to Indian swamis and gurus. That's perhaps because gurus of that time presented themselves as an antidote to the very stiff, rigid idea of manhood that prevailed in Victorian and Edwardian society. What could be more romantic than this figure talking about liberation and enlightenment experiences? For these people it was as if Jesus was walking on the earth again. That had an attraction to women who were educated but were not able to pursue careers and do the things that women take for granted today. Yoga is probably the longest lasting legacy of what happened in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Minds in the West were considerably broadened by the sense of spiritual enquiry and that was a tremendous benefit to people." - Mick Brown, author, The Nirvana Express talks to Manjula Narayan about Indian gurus and the West's search for enlightenment

Her time at PWL might not have yielded any hits, but the short-lived pop career of Japanese singer Kakko is the stuff of legend. We take a deep dive into the story behind her debut single, "We Should Be Dancing”, hearing from PWL's David Howells and Nicki L'Amy Brée about how the aspiring performer learnt the ropes at the label before being sent into the studio with both Mike Stock and Matt Aitken, and Phil Harding and Ian Curnow, all of whom also recall the project. After an aborted first attempt with a song called "Stop The Clock”, Stock and Aitken settled on “We Should Be Dancing”, which is one of the most polarising SAW singles of all time. While Kakko didn't trouble the UK chart, the latest releases from Big Fun, Sonia and Pat & Mick kept the Hit Factory in the top 40, although not always at positions the artists had become accustomed to. As musical trends changed dramatically in 1990, we hear from engineer Peter Day about SAW's latest trick to keep their tracks club-friendly: the ubiquitous “woo! yeah!” sample, which featured on both Big Fun's “Handful Of Promises” and “Counting Every Minute” by Sonia. By early 1989, Jason Donovan had a couple of hits under his belt, but his music career went into overdrive with the release of "Too Many Broken Hearts" and the mass hysteria that followed his every move in the UK. Jason has been the first to acknowledge it took him a while to warm up as a singer and we hear from engineer Karen Hewitt and long-term PWL session singers Mae McKenna and Miriam Stockley about the crucial role backing vocals played in rounding out the Stock Aitken Waterman sound. A major part of Jason's teen appeal was his image, which was showcased in the music video for "Too Many Broken Hearts". Director Chris Langman and David Howells answer a few questions about the clip. Who was that girl on the tractor and where did the guitar come from? The second song in this episode is the second charity single by Pat & Mick. Phil Spector was a musical genius. His brilliance as a producer made him a legend. On February 3rd 2003 he shot Lana Clarkson dead. In 2009, he was convicted of murder, and died in prison on January 16th 2021. Spector is a four-part Showtime docu-series (available to watch on Sky Documentaries in the U.K.). In it, series co-directors Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott examine not only Spector's ‘life and legacy' but also the person of Lana Clarkson.  As they tell host, Matthew Sherwood, they want to make Lana ‘more than just a footnote in the Phil Spector story' by bringing ‘her out as a fully fleshed out human being.' In doing so, they take the viewer on a more challenging but ultimately more rewarding journey. The Phil Spector that they present is no monster. Rather, he is a deeply damaged human being; one whose flaws led ultimately to his downfall.  In this episode of Factual America we learn that in order to present as full a picture of Spector as possible, Sheena and Don spoke to a wide variety of people. Among them, the lead detectives in the Lana Clarkson murder case, as well as others with first-hand knowledge of some of the incredible stories told about Spector during his career. The docu-series even has recordings of Phil Spector speaking on the night of the murder. With Matthew, Sheena and Don discuss the link between musical genius and mental illness – why it seems to affect artists and not people in other industries; the role of money and power, and whether we can still engage with the work of artists who have done terrible things. They also shed light on who Lana Clarkson was. As Sheena says, Lana ‘was more than Phil Spector's victim. She was a successful working actress... a daughter and a sister and a friend who by all accounts brought light and joy into the lives of everyone she met.' Spector is the story of a tragedy, of a legacy corrupted, and two lives wasted. It is a story that moves in the light, and dark. In Factual America #120, go behind the scenes with Matthew Sherwood, Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “There have also been people that criticised us for contextualising Phil's behaviour, as if that's somehow giving him a pass... it was important to us to present him as a multifaceted human being. He was a loving and devoted father to his daughter Nicole... It doesn't negate the fact that he murdered Lana Clarkson.” – Sheena M. My special guest tonight is author Mike Rothmiller to discuss what his evidence that points to Bobby Kennedy's killing Marilyn Monroe. Get his book  Bombshell: The Night Bobby Kennedy Killed Marilyn Monroe on Amazon.  ‘Bombshell reads like a James Ellroy novel with its catalogue of corruption' Mick Brown, Telegraph     -  ‘Bobby called. He's coming to California. He wants to see me.'  Drawing on secret police files, Marilyn Monroe's private diary and never before published first-hand testimony, this book proves that Robert Kennedy was directly responsible for her death. It details the legendary star's tumultuous personal involvement with him and his brother, President John Kennedy, and how they plotted to silence her.  The new evidence and revelatory statements are provided by Mike Rothmiller who, as a detective of the Organized Crime Intelligence Division (OCID) of the LAPD, had direct personal access to hundreds of restricted LAPD files on exactly what happened at Marilyn Monroe's Californian home on August 5, 1962.  With his training and investigator's knowledge, Rothmiller used that confidential information to get to the heart of the matter, to the people who were there the night Marilyn died – two of whom played major roles in the cover-up – and the wider conspiracy to protect the Kennedys whatever the collateral damage.  There will be those with doubts, but to them, the lawman – who directed international intelligence operations targeting organized crime – says the printed, forensic and oral evidence are totally convincing. He insists: ‘If I presented my evidence in any court of law, I'd get a conviction.'        It's super easy to access our archives!   Here's how:   iPhone Users: Access Mysterious Radio from Apple Podcasts and become a subscriber there or if you want access to even more exclusive content join us on Patreon.   Android Users: Enjoy over 800 exclusive member-only posts to include ad-free episodes, case files and more when you join us on Patreon.    Copy and Paste our link in a text message to all your family members and friends! All the varieties of power – star, political, sexual, criminal and emotional – are on show in this definitive, untold story of Frank Sinatra and the Mafia. Drawing on an enormous archive of previously unseen records held by international law agencies, the FBI, the CIA and big-city police departments, Rothmiller and Thompson reveal Sinatra's pact with the Mob in shocking detail. With additional evidence from decades of investigations and testimony, they expose Sinatra's lifelong association with the Mafia, which he always denied, and its deadly collateral damage. This revelatory showstopper is a wild dance made coherent by intelligent choreography. Sinatra may not have been an actual made man, but the Mafia certainly made him. - Praise for Bombshell: ‘Reads like a James Ellroy novel', Mick Brown, Daily Telegraph
