Wisconsin Life
Hornpipes, Reels And Slip Jigs: Irish Dancing In Milwaukee

Wisconsin Life

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2021

Irish dance has been booming for quite some time in Milwaukee, where there are multiple dance schools. If you’re not familiar with this art form…Irish dancers typically keep their arms straight at their sides while their legs quickly leap, kick and shuffle across the floor. Usually, St. Patrick’s Day is a huge day for dancers, as they travel across the area performing for people. While the pandemic has impacted their events this year, dancers and instructors have found a way to keep hopping and stepping in a safe way. So to celebrate that dedication to the Irish culture, we’re revisiting this story from 2014, when WPR’s Maureen McCollum attended an Irish dance competition, or a feis, in Oconomowoc.

Episode Notes: First tune is a Piobaireachead I wrote for my grandparents and Family, called John and Mary Blair Salute. It was recorded on a hillside in Scotland on the shores of Loch Mor, (a bit south of the Falls of Foyers). I misspoke in the beginning here, I meant Ethnostate, not Eurostate, Europe is allowed to have states :) Next track is two Hornpipes, The Eric Rigler album in question was from 1997, and the Hornpipes were Plains of Boyle and Boys of Blue Hill. The O'Farrell Waltz's are The Salamanca and the Copenhagen Waltz. The Women's Set is The Female Hero (From James Aird's Collection), Well shot of her (from O'Farrell) and The Female Rake (also from Aird). and Finally the Oyster Wives Rant from Aird. So I have one piece of advice. Do it! I'm not saying you should join me on one of my Celtic Invasion Vacations. I'm not saying you should join another tour group. But travel. Go. Right now. Mark Twain wrote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Traveling will change your life for the better forever. Stop waiting for the "right moment". Start planning now. If you enjoy my music, then join me on a Celtic Invasion of another Celtic country. In 2016, we're going to Cornwall in search of Celtic culture, King Arthur and the Holy Grail. Will you join us?
