We hear of two recent publications in this edition, the first of which is 'Dreich Planet 2 - Isle of Man', with poetry from the Island. Guest editors for the international publishing venture, Annie Kissack and Hazel Teare, tell us about, and we hear the first poem in the collection by their fellow guest editor, David Callin. The other is 'Strandings & Sinkings : Shipwrecks in Manx Waters' published by Loaghtan Books, for which Sara Goodwins and George Hobbs took as their starting point more of Ray Stanfield's archive of images. This is very resonant in a year in which the choice of Adrian Corkill as Reih Bleeaney Vanannan 2024 was for his detailed database of shipwrecks in Manx waters, and in which the RNLI is celebrating 200 years since its founding in 1824 by Sir William Hillary. Manx National Heritage curator of archaeology, Alison Fox, talks about Sir William and the foundation of the service, and also about some of the Island's maritime history and heritage in an ongoing exhibition, 'All At Sea', at the House of Manannan in Peel.

A new exhibition exploring the Isle of Man's remarkable maritime heritage and honouring the 200th anniversary of the RNLI opened recently at the House of Manannan in Peel. ‘All at Sea' uncovers some of the tragic events in Manx waters which motivated Manx resident, Sir William Hillary to establish a national maritime lifesaving institution. On Perspective this week we talk to the people behind the exhibition and consider the vital role that Hillary played in saving lives at sea. The story of the RNLI is undoubtedly a source of great pride for the Manx people.

There are interesting exhibitions running at the Manx Museum in Douglas and the House of Manannan in Peel, and we hear of a concert in Bride. Mostly, though, we look forward to Wednesday 25th January, which happens to be Laa'l Paul. Can the weather on that day really foretell the state of the world? Wednesday 25th January sees a presentation by David Bellamy of the Manx Wildlife Trust about the Agri-Environment Scheme, and we hear from him about that. It's also the first night of three when Rushen Players will perform Peter Gordon's comedy, 'Secondary Cause of Death'. We hear from director, Catie Angus, and cast members Juan Bridson, Graham Roberts and Sharon Roberts.
Midway through the Isle of Man's Manx TT motor-racing festival lies a day (terrifyingly aptly) branded as “Mad Sunday”. David Oakes chose this bacchanalian festival, one filled with inebriated petrol-heads and super-charged exhaust eruptions, to talk with the Manx Wildlife Trust's CEO, Leigh Morris. Recorded in perhaps the only two quiet enclaves the island possessed that Mad Sunday, Leigh expands upon a journey that took him from horticultural nurseryman to the head of a Wildlife Trust that oversees the planet's sole Unesco whole nation biosphere. Leigh's journey - starting simply enough in Yorkshire, then Wales and Scotland - quickly expands into a life of volunteering and vocational placements in India and Nepal, Ethiopia and Oman, the Galapagos and St Helena… the list goes on. Whether upon an island paradise or beneath the waves, there is seemingly no habitat that hasn't drawn Leigh's attention. In his own words: “The more you know, the more you know you don't know…” Armed with an insatiable curiosity, Leigh hopes to turn the Isle of Man, all 35 by 10 miles of it, into “what good looks like”. In this episode we discusses the sex-appeal of carrots, the rivakry of a petrol vs. electic (or even hydrogen) powereded TT, community conservation movements such as SeaSearch, and the hot potato of viewing agriculture as a very necessary part of our species' ongoing environmental ambitions. Filter in a menagerie of rare Loaghtan sheep, Penguins, Sea Iguanas and the Isle of Man's escaped feral Wallaby population, and you have a gloriously ambitious discussion about the state of the world, and where to take it next. Oh - and October's episode is not sponsored by the Visit Isle of Man board… we promise! For further information on this and other episodes, visit: https://www.treesacrowd.fm/leigh-morris/ Weekly episodes available early AND bonus content made free to forage by "Subscribtion Squirrels" on our Patreon. Today, Rev. Jan Avende and Mike Bierschenk come together to discuss the idea of being left alone and adrift in the spiritual world. They talk about what it's like to experience doubt in their spiritual lives, what it's like to work through the cycle, and how they pull themselves out. As an incidental bonus, there's some interesting discussion about the nuances between sea deities in different cultures (Poseidon and Manannan) and how they impact those experiences. He loves the birds he finds in parks and open spaces in the city but for this weeks Open Country he sets sail for the open spaces and cliffs of the Isle of Man, a landscape he has always wanted to visit. Stuck out in the middle of the Irish Sea The Isle of Man is a birders paradise with rare sightings of elusive birds such as choughs, hen harriers and falcons. David crosses the Sound to visit the Bird Observatory on the Calf of Man where the Manx Shearwater is making a comeback and hears about how to keep the sea god Manannan happy.
“Manannan’s Children” by Russell Blackford (Originally published in Dreaming Again.) Vain gaiety, vain battle, vain repose… — W.B. Yeats They’d chased a deer, which had bolted in terror from the forest, then run to a round grassy hill and vanished over the top. At the top of the hill, Finn and Oisin pulled back on their horses’ reins and wrapped their heavy cloaks more tightly against the bitter cold wind from the sea. Down on the shore was a lady, also on horseback, with the lapping waves and the sinking red sun behind her. Oisin’s breath caught and his heart seemed to melt like heated gold within his ribs. She was incomparable! The lady rode a majestic, shimmering stallion, as black as adamant. She called out to the heroes, father and son, and they rode down to meet her, white-bearded Finn going ahead. Oisin couldn’t take his... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Saga of Manannan, Part 3 and end of the Irish Mythological Cycle This is the third and final part in the Saga of Manannan which contains two stories. The first, the Tale of Laogaire, tells of a visit of a great warrior to the Realm of the Undying who given the chance refuses to return to Erin. The second tale, the Tale of Tadg and the Three Duns or Castles tells the tale of the voyage of Tadg amongst Manannan's Islands and his encounter with the three great Halls in the Many-Coloured Land. This is also the last episode in the Irish Mythological Cycle and the tale of Tadg rounds off the tale by returning our vision back to Four Islands in the Otherworld, perhaps the very same islands from which the Tuatha De Danaan came from to settle the land of Erin. Promo - Genesis Avalon "Genesis Avalon" is a full-cast, fantasy maxi-series serial drama. Like a lot of kids who grew up in the 1990s, I grew up with shows like X-Men, Batman: The Animated Series, Superman, Justice League, and Spider-man. As a child of the 90's though, I also grew up with a totally different form of the superhero in the form of anime. From the boys of Gundam, to the seven warriors of Suzaku in Fushigi Yuugi, to even (dare I say it) Sailor Moon, I had been able to see two different kinds of heroes. The kinds with capes and gadgets (Or alien powers), and the kind whose mystical powers governed their duties and how they fight. So I decided I would take the mythology I loved the most and apply it to a superhero. Thus came Genesis Avalon. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed writing and directing it. And my cast is made of platinum, you are all amazing. Promo - The Fox The Fox The Fox is a historical novel that contains adventure, ancient Celtic beliefs, sacrifice, love of family, ancient and modern culture, and divorce. Have you ever wondered who your ancestors were? How did they live? How did they die? Most of us do. Genealogy is a huge business. Curiosity about our bloodlines, our past, makes us want to go back as far as possible. But, genealogy can only go back as far as there are written records. What if you had a chance to find a connection to ancient roots? To someone who lived two thousand years ago? Proof you could touch and hold in your hand? Aine Macrea has that chance. She is the archaeologist who is on the search for a vision. Jahna has come to her and lead her to discoveries. In The Fox, you will follow the lives of Jahna and Lovern, two people who lived in what is now Scotland, during the time of the invading Romans. The Romans threatened Jahna and Lovern, their clan and most importantly, the life of their child. They struggled to find a way to stop the coming invasion and in doing so, left traces of their lives. Aine is working to rebuild her career and is led by instinct, or a vision (or is it a ghost?) to a hilltop in Scotland. Follow their stories in my podcast novel The Fox, you can also buy this book at Amazon.
