Recently, I posed this question to some of my prior guests, “How would you advise a young person to reduce risk in their life?” The answers rolled in from 40 guests! I grouped the responses into five categories: Building valuable relationships, managing finances, personal growth, risk management, and having awareness. There are tremendous pearls of wisdom! Valuable relationships – Communication with loved ones, mentors, and friendsDon’t be afraid to ask for help Seek out trusted friends, family members, and mentors and listen to them “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” https://myworstinvestmentever.com/ep60-corey-hoffstein-beware-of-pure-story-driven-investing/ (Corey Hoffstein) “At each stage in your life, find mentors and friends you trust and who you feel are invested in you – listen to their advice.” https://myworstinvestmentever.com/ep9-colin-mclean-risks-in-value-investing-when-to-cut-loss-on-a-declining-stock/ (Colin W. This is much like the diversification of assets in an investment portfolio. However, the flip side is reducing risk generally results in lower overall returns since the investments are not overweight in any single industry (or portfolio holding). So, one must be content with not experiencing exceptional returns in exchange for reducing risk

He also holds a master’s in entrepreneurship from MIT. “In reality, the worst investment ever related to taxes is not taking the time to properly plan and minimize your tax obligation.” – Bobby Casey Worst investment ever Not putting effort into minimizing taxes is a mistake by inaction He says his No. 1 worst investment ever was probably the same as it is for every person listening to the podcast – taxes. In a way, he is joking. But what he really means is people don’t think about taxes as being a bad investment, because most people think they’re doing something they must do. However, the first time they write a six-figure check for taxes, it should make them think about what other better action could be done with that money than pay those taxes. He doesn’t mean breaking the law. But he says, while abiding by the law, there are a lot of things people can do to minimize taxes. Many people don’t think about it and write it off as the cost of success, but Bobby points out they could have reinvested that $40,000 or $80,000 into something significantly better if they had taken the available and necessary steps. Substantially worst investment For several years, Bobby used to host around two offshore investment conferences a year, primarily in the Caribbean. Around that time, he developed personal connections in the private investment space who had opportunities they were promoting, and the events gave people a chance to learn about alternative investment solutions other than just building a stock and bond portfolio. Bobby become close with one apparently hard-working guy, “Rick” (not his real name), who was offering such private investment options on the conference circuit, giving presentations, and raising money for his private company. At the time, he was selling preferred shares in his company, and Bobby bought about $100,000 worth of private preferred shares, for him a substantial sum at the time. Rick was doing press releases relating his success in bringing in lucrative investors, sometimes $5 million clients, sometimes $10 million, and saying what returns were going to be achieved. One release said, “We’re going to be up 300% this year.” Bobby was impressed. Adding credibility to the investment considerably was that Rick gained approval to take the company public on NASDAQ, and Bobby watched him on TV ringing the opening bell on the first IPO day of trading. Bobby thought he was going to make a killing on the stock. Rick even employed a friend Bobby had introduced. Enterprise exposed as a complex fraud The result was something far from a success. From top to bottom, the operation was a complete pump-and-dump scam. Rick was raising money selling preferred shares, speaking at conferences everywhere, in order to raise the stock price. With the millions of dollars he took for preferred shares, with all the press releases, Rick really did have a business, but it was not nearly as profitable or busy as he had claimed. Rick was arrested at an airport during an SEC investigation of his fraudulent pump and dump scheme. He had been taking money from the company promotions, funneling it through multiple offshore companies in Belize; those companies had brokerage accounts with tiny firms in the US, which were in turn buying up all the shares with it to inflate the share price of the listed company in a big money circle. By doing that, if the share price was $10, Rick would take all the money he had raised at a conference, $5 million for example, funnel it through the Belize companies, which would then buy $5 million worth of stock. This blew the price up. He was also paying “analysts” to write extremely glowing reports on the listed company. The stock would then rise from $10 a share to $15 to $20, and he would through his private holdings, sell them through the Belize company. Bobby’s friend indicted and jailedIt is difficult to believe that NASDAQ actually listed this company without enough due diligence to realize the scam for what it was. Sadly, Bobby’s who worked for Rick was named in the SEC charges and was jailed for six months, because he was a “public figure”, and even though he had no knowledge of the situation. Some lessons Don’t take anybody at their word on an investment. If you’re investing in a project, especially one that is an alternative asset class, such as a condo in Panama, don’t just look at a smooth-talking salesman and a really great PowerPoint presentation and give him a $50,000 deposit. Go to Panama, look at where they’re putting shovels in the ground, see if they’re actually building something, do a little bit of homework and spend a little money to investigate, fly down to Panama, for example, and if that $1,000 saves you $50,000, it will be worth it. “Whether the project is a complete scam, or just poorly executed, the results the same – you’re still going to lose your money.” – Bobby Casey Know yourself and find your investment comfort zone. Invest in an area you know about and stay in it. Bobby has his a comfort zone that works for him, but when he has strayed from it, he has paid the price. “I’ve been investing for 30 years, and every single time … I started making investment decisions that were outside of my area of expertise and my comfort zone, they would never go well.” – Bobby Casey If you go outside your comfort zone, do a great amount of due diligence before you throw your money down. “Whether the project is a complete scam, or just poorly executed, the results the same – you’re still going to lose your money … so do your homework.“ – Bobby Casey Andrew’s takeaways Mistake No. 5: Misplaced trust Mistake No. 2: Failed to properly assess or manage risk. Believe no one. Try to make sure that people can prove their claims or that proof is made available easily. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice. However, usually people fail to ask for advice until it is too late, because they are too excited about the potential return, which blinds them to possible risks. Find someone with interests aligned with yours, with expertise in the asset class and location you are investing in, such as a good lawyer in Panama, for example, if it’s a real estate deal there, who can understand what’s going on and hopefully keep you out of a scam. But don't be afraid to ask for advice. And usually people don't ask for advice until it's too because it gets so excited about the potential return. No. 1 goal for next the 12 months To build his crypto mining operation to maximum capacity, taking advantage of his location’s inexpensive electricity bills. He does believe crypto prices will return to former levels and is a big believer in blockchain technology in general. In this interview with Bobby Casey, we talk about the definition of an Anarchist and how blockchain and anarchy give you true personal freedom. We also touch on the definition of a Libertarian and what the differences between this and Anarchy is. Bobby Casey is an expat anarchist who believes that blockchain is the way of the future, creating smart contracts for just about anything you want, and a way to replace the government. Like so many of our guests, at 19 years old, Bobby Casey only lasted 1 year in college before realizing that this was not how he wanted to spend his life, taking 4 years of college to start working for someone else. Coming from an Entrepreneurial family, Bobby Casey was destined to become a leader, to help others live a better life. After many attempts and failures, Bobby Casey hit a home run with a company that grew into an $8 Million venture. Then something happened that no one saw coming. A new company on the block came along with a new, better software platform. In Bobby Casey's words: they got their asses kicked. His company, along with a lot of his competitors, could not compete and eventually many of them shut down. By the time these large companies realized that this new company with fantastic software couldn't deliver, it was too late. The good news for Bobby was that he sold his venture for a nice profit. So with money in hand, he recalled family dinner topics. Like, 'how to properly structure an LLC, asset protection, and investments' Even as a 14-year-old he was part of the family discussions and recalled them later in life realizing that he didn't want to pay high taxes, and wondered how he could protect himself from liability. The Next Step Bobby Casey talks us through how in 2007, his company Global Wealth Protection came about. Where he started, why it was so important for him and who he works with. As Bobby realized, he needed to plug his holes, so his friends were likely in the same boat. In this interview with Bobby Casey we spend a ton of time talking about the Blockchain and Anarchy, also: Crypto Currency Gold & Silver Stock Market Overseas Real estate Block Chain is the way of the future Decentralized currency Smart Contracts What's the Difference Between a Libertarian and an Anarchist Answer: About 7 years! As Bobby would say! Once you've made the decision to become a Libertarian, it takes 7 years to make the move to being a full-blown Anarchist! Definition of a Libertarian The definition of a libertarian is a person who believes in free will. Definition of an Anarchist The definition of an Anarchists are people who want to live under their own authority. They are against having a political party making the rules. Anarchists are extremely peaceful, but when pushed they will take action. Also, the definition of an anarchist is a person who rebels against any authority, established order, or ruling power. Blockchain and Anarchy You might be wondering how Blockchain and Anarchy could solve the problems with how governments currently run, so we could move away from traditional government and no longer have lines in the sand. 100 years ago we had around 100 countries; today, we have 193...why? Bobby Casey works in the controversial “offshore services” industry helping people structure their business and manage their money with little-known opportunities around the world. These kinds of activities have earned great scrutiny from the mainstream financial world due to the misinformation, trickery, and illegal actions they are often associated with. Bobby shares stories from some of the less reputable contemporaries in his niche that have conned unsuspecting clients out of tens of thousands of dollars through phony passport or land buying scams. “It’s important to be ethical with your personal brand.” No matter what industry you work in or kind of life you lead, everyone is playing a character role in the narrative of life. Some get so good at telling the story of who they want the world to perceive them as that meeting after getting to know them through the false persona they create is often disappointing. The people who make the most effort to posture themselves in a certain way publically are often the most miserable behind the scenes. “If you never tell a lie, you never have to remember what you’ve said.” Authentic people don’t seek adoration from strangers. They aren’t obsessed with social stature or threatened by others’ success. Their only goal is to live genuinely. Many “professionals” today, particularly those who work online, are only good at promoting themselves as a figurehead for something. They cannot actually do the thing they promote themselves for. It’s important to find your own path, but be honest with that path. “In the modern world, it does not take long to spread a bad message about someone, and a bad message will spread a lost faster than a good one.” Global Wealth Protection:https://globalwealthprotection.com/ Bobby Casey Twitter:https://twitter.com/gwpro Bobby Casey Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/globalwealthprotection/ Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/GlobalWealthProtection/

I heard an eight-year-old kid tell another eight-year-old that he's not welcome in his home. He said "Trump or Clinton?" "Clinton." And that was that. They kept walking. Kept debating and I bet nothing happened. I bet they're still friends. Some people are either all talk or afraid. Or both. I try not to be either. I try to listen, come up with ideas, and be grateful. Because if I listen, I learn. And then I can say two sweet words, "thank you." How many people said, "If Trump becomes president, I'm leaving the country." Or the other way around? There's only one reason why I'd ever even consider packing. And Bobby Casey spelled it out for me. "Americans don't understand how insanely expensive it is to live in the U.S.," Bobby said on my podcast. He sold everything he owned and left the country in 2009. Right after the market crashed. Now he works all over the world. And helps people get off the grid. I wanted to know how he did it. And why... "I hated my customers," he said. "I hated my employees, I hated my job, I hated my business." "But what made you think you could sell all your belonging and travel the world forever?" "Weren't you scared you would run out of money?" "I just knew I'd work it out," he said. "I'd make some money." I couldn't do it. It's easy to be uncertain when you're level of unknown isn't going to erupt your central nervous system. But Bobby had motivation. "My happiness and my quality of life is much more important than cashing out on a business," he said. "I didn't care. I wanted to be happy again." So he got rid of everything. He gave away motorcycles. (He had 27). Then he bought two one-way tickets to Prague. One for him. And one for his 9 year old son. "We'd never been there." The rest of his family moved a few weeks later. He has three kids. "What about friends? And school?" I asked. "My daughter, she's 20, she's a rapper in London. She did two years of virtual school. And she can make friends anywhere. It's her personality type." His other two kids enrolled with locals. I had 100 questions. "How'd you get the confidence? What type of freelance work did you do?" "How did you make ends meet?" He broke it down for me. And told me all the ways he saves money living abroad. "I did the math on this," he said. "You won't believe this, but I pay $42 a year for a 10,000 euro deductible health insurance plan." Anything after 10,000 euros, he's covered. "I could get airlifted to John Hopkins if I wanted and that would be covered." "You can make about $150,000, tax-free, as an American living abroad." Here's how Bobby explains it on the podcast... If you make $100K (gross) in the U.S, then you're probably netting less than $60K. Abroad, you can make the same $60K (net), live tax-free (if you qualify for the "foreign earned income exclusion"), get a housing allowance, pay $42 a year for health insurance, and basically never feel broke again. I was getting depressed. Because I know I'm not going to move. It's part of being human. Everyone I look up to, Scott Adams, Dan Ariely, Nassim Taleb, they all say the same thing: people are irrational creatures. Even the idea that we're being rational, is irrational. Every time Bobby spoke, I had 10 new questions. I thought I'd never understand. But then he gave me his secret. And it answered all my questions. It was so simple. I couldn't believe it. Bobby and his son were walking around Estonia. They left Prague, bought a house and had no plans. Someone overheard them speaking English. "You're American?" They started talking. "What are you planning to do for your kids for school?" Bobby had no idea. "I have a son who's your son's age. We found a really good school up the hill. There's a meeting tonight for foreigners who want to enroll their kids." That was it. Then Bobby told me his secret..."I...

And told me all the ways he saves money living abroad. “I did the math on this,” he said. "You won't believe this, but I pay $42 a year for a 10,000 euro deductible health insurance plan." Anything after 10,000 euros, he's covered. "I could get airlifted to John Hopkins if I wanted and that would be covered." "You can make about $150,000, tax-free, as an American living abroad." Here’s how Bobby explains it on the podcast... If you make $100K (gross) in the U.S, then you’re probably netting less than $60K. Abroad, you can make the same $60K (net), live tax-free (if you qualify for the “foreign earned income exclusion”), get a housing allowance, pay $42 a year for health insurance, and basically never feel broke again. I was getting depressed. Because I know I’m not going to move. It’s part of being human. Everyone I look up to, Scott Adams, Dan Ariely, Nassim Taleb, they all say the same thing: people are irrational creatures. Even the idea that we’re being rational, is irrational. “You’re American?” They started talking. “What are you planning to do for your kids for school?” Bobby had no idea. “I have a son who’s your son’s age. We found a really good school up the hill. There’s a meeting tonight for foreigners who want to enroll their kids.” That was it. Then Bobby told me his secret…“I figure it out as I go.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Story of house flip. Bobby describes how to structure the entities so that it's hard for attorneys to figure out what you own. By using advanced techniques, like irrevocable trusts, it's actually possible to not own anything, so even if you do get sued, there's nothing to attach the judgment to. Listen to this episode and implement Bobby's techniques NOW before you lose it all. Key Takeaways: [3:39] Bobby's Backstory Owns Global Wealth Protection His mission is to teach people how to internationalize their business, wealth, and life. [7:26] His life before he became a digital nomad Started, bought, sold a dozen businesses. He has been an entrepreneur his entire adult life and had a few epic failures along the way. He started being a digital nomad because he's an expat. [9:47] His thoughts on real estate investing Real estate investing is a great opportunity for people who want to have a nomadic lifestyle. He likes the concept of parking money in physical assets. His advice is to diversify geographically [13:16] Mistakes investors often make Poor structuring of a deal is a common mistake He provides an example of how damaging poor structuring can be [17:21] His advice to prevent poor structuring of deals He doesn't recommend home state LLC own their property Don't create an umbrella of ownership in one corporation Have an irrevocable trust on the membership interest in all LLCs [21:50] Irrevocable trust and its beneficiaries An irrevocable trust is an asset protection and estate planning tool You'll be a grantor or settlor of the trust. You don't have any asset that's attachable at a judgment at all. [26:20] Federal Lawsuits According to the American Bar Association, the statistics on federal lawsuits says a new lawsuit is filed every 16.5 seconds. [29:26] Another mistake and what's it like to file a lawsuit in the US Another common mistake is owning a property in your own name. A mindset that no one will sue you makes no sense. In the US, there are no consequences to sue somebody for no good reason. [34:20] Bobby's advice on implementing asset security Don't own anything in your name. Have a properly structured LLC Wyoming is a preferred state unless you live there in which case use Nevada. [37:37] Bobby's “aha” moment Started a business in the 90's assembling bicycles for Walmart. An official letter from Walmart suddenly canceled his vendor contract as of that day. This was his big wake-up call on putting too many eggs in one basket. Connect with Bobby Casey: Global Wealth Protection Facebook Twitter Resources Mentioned: American Bar Association

On this episode of Jason Hartman’s Jet Setter Show, he invites Bobby Casey from Global Wealth Protection to talk about alternative investments, asset protection and internationalization. In the interview, Casey brings up both business and personal issues related to your presence in a particular jurisdiction, how trust companies can be used and secured, and how you can really manipulate and control your own assets to get the most out of them Find full transcripts and more at http://jetsettershow.com/category/podcast/ Key Takeaways 02.33 – Years ago, investing a lot into the stock market seemed more reliable, now it’s more a case of putting all your eggs in one basket. There are some who are firmer believers in investing in real estate and hard assets as well. 04.30 – Back in the 1970s, Doug Casey made a name for himself in his promotion of internationalization, to the point of having multiple passports, bank accounts and investments in multiple jurisdictions. 06.30 – With the US becoming steadily more militarized, it’s becoming more important to be sure of your own investments and situation within different jurisdictions. 08.00 – Internationalization also works as a sort of personal backup – various real estate investments can be unsuccessful and having a back-up in another jurisdiction can be a sensible business strategy. Similarly, at the very least, a second passport gives you another valid travel document. 09.40 – Paraguay remains one of the most popular destinations for US citizens looking to obtain a second passport. That said, with this sort of transaction, there are always fraud risks, so listeners should take particular care. 11.40 – When considering your options for alternative investments and managing your assets, Bobby Casey personally recommends asset-class diversification as well as geo-political diversification. 11.55 – Be wary of likely “investments” where you don’t receive any income – this is not an investment; this is a speculation. If you are going to actively invest money into speculations, work on a figure closer to 5% than to 50%. 13.25 – Trust companies can be used for a number of different purposes, because it’s basically the act of setting up a structure to manage your wealth. The most common usage is to assist beneficiaries, usually the trust-holder’s children, but they can also help with litigation risks because often the money is no longer seen to be in your ownership. 15.40 – Again, risks can be associated with the management of trusts if a case does come to court, and there’s a chance of being accused of contempt of court. As a settler, never name yourself as protector of the trust. 17.35 – The number one most important aspect is only doing business with people you trust. 18.40 – One of the positives of having your assets in farmland or property is that these are not easy to liquidate, and discrepancies will be noticed. 20.00 – The amount you get back and the time you wait until you get the money back depends on the projects you work on and invest in – ie. timber farms are a great way to compound your wealth, but it can be a lengthy process. With many timber farms, you’re splitting the profit over time with the management team working on the site. 22.50 – Even if you have the usual management, political or business risks, with investments and assets like timber farms or real estate, you do still have your stake in the property. 24.00 – Mango farms or other fruit farms can also be a fairly reliable investment due to the longevity of the tree’s production itself, so your investment is long-term. 25.20 – More information can be found at www.globalwealthprotection.com or by emailing Bobby Casey directly at bobby@globalwealthprotection.com
