I'm all about life hacks – especially ones centering on life improvement, particularly in the area of mental health. Therefore, I love this episode and Dr. Yeager's book, "How Am I Doing? 40 Conversations You Have to Have with Yourself." How often do you ask yourself, “How am I doing?” If you're like most of us, the answer may be–not often enough! Detroit Pistons psychotherapist, Dr. Corey Yeager, invites us to ask ourselves this very question. His new book, “How Am I Doing? 40 Conversations to Have with Yourself” provides thought provoking prompts for deeper self knowledge–of who you've been and who you intend to become! I highlighted some of my favorite quotes from Dr. Yeager's book and asked him to elaborate on them. Specifically, we explore: The importance of being sure you're the one writing your story! Listening to your inner voice and monitoring your self talk. Growing up, Dr. Yeager heard things like, “Don't become someone your family wouldn't recognize!” How do we honor our family of origin while still resonating with our authentic selves? The tension between “Making the right choice” vs. “Making the choice right!” The impact of untruths we tell ourselves! Dr. Yeager's definition of True Freedom and the heavy responsibility inherent to freedom. How we can frame our pain and struggles as gifts! How “personifying” your relationship with anxiety provides you with control over what feels uncontrollable Dr. Yeager's book digs deep yet remains accessible to all–no matter where you are in your journey toward self discovery! Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

Toxic positivity is a phenomenon that has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. It is characterized by the constant reinforcement of an overly optimistic attitude, to the point of ignoring, invalidating, or minimizing the hardships or feelings faced by individuals. This can create a sense of disconnect between people. It can also be detrimental to those struggling with mental health issues, as it invalidates their experiences and makes them feel like they are not allowed to have genuine emotions.  To address the concept and challenges of toxic positivity to individuals and relationships, we consulted Psychotherapist, Whitney Goodman. Walking us through her book aptly titled Toxic Positivity: Keeping It Real in a World Obsessed with Being Happy, Whitney helps us understand how to create an atmosphere of open communication, where people can be honest about their feelings without fear of judgment or invalidation. Listen and learn:  Toxic positivity: what does it mean? The repercussions of toxic positivity  How toxic positivity can stunt creativity What does healthy non-toxic positivity look like?  Why has the concept of toxic positivity become so controversial?  How to avoid toxic positivity Toxic positivity in the workplace: challenges and solutions How do we let go of toxic positivity? In other words, liminal space refers to the actual space or time in which you shift from one phase to another." Have you ever found yourself in a liminal space? Finally, did you take a moment to thank Him? In this episode, we welcome Rachel Ridge, author of "Your Mountain is Calling: Finding God in Untamed Places," and listen to her invitations to welcome liminal spaces into our lives. My guest on this episode equates conversation to being on a playground, where there is humor, joy, curiosity, exploration, and yes, some arguments and hurt feelings. And feeling bold enough to invite others onto our own personal playgrounds requires us to first uncover some things about ourselves and how we wish to interact with those around us.   You're about to hear my conversation with Dr. Corey Yeager, a licensed marriage and family therapist as well as the psychotherapist for the National Basketball Association's Detroit Pistons.   Doc recently released a new book called “How Am I Doing? 40 conversations to have with yourself”   As you'll hear Doc describe in this conversation, before we can begin to understand others and communicate effectively with others around us — the other people on the playground — we have to first have a level of awareness about ourselves that unfortunately, very few of us pour much effort into achieving.   And that's why Doc wrote his book. To give you a starting point to learn how to ask yourself the questions that will inform your ability to interact appropriately with those around you.   Check out Doc's work at https://doctorcoreyyeager.com/, connect with him on Twitter at https://twitter.com/drcoreyyeager, and buy his book at https://www.amazon.com/dp/1400236762.

In her book, "When the Soul Listens," she writes, "In contemplative prayer, the curtains of impression management come down. There's no one you have to impress; you are accepted as you are. In Season 10, we examine the role of prayer and meditation in our everyday lives. We are being invited to develop a new rhythm and habit of daily prayer. We are learning this doesn't have to be complicated, in truth, it is an invitation to simplicity. Dr. Corey Yeager, psychotherapist for the Detroit Pistons and licensed marriage and family therapist, joins Tayo for today's episode. Dr. Yeager works to give athletes open environments to express and explore their challenges, finding that frank dialogue helps not only individual athletes but entire teams. His new book How Am I Doing? is an extension of his mission to enhance individual self-wellness through self-work that starts with getting to know the person behind the mirror.Dr. Yeager begins the episode by explaining that concept of the person in the mirror and why it's so important to engage and understand them instead of avoiding their secrets, as many of us are prone to. He says that most of us become what other people tell us we should be and get stuck in outdated coping mechanisms, and only by understanding ourselves can we make progress. He illustrates this by sharing his own journey away from the assumption that his physical prowess was the only thing he had to give to finding his spark and purpose in academia. I then ask Dr. Yeager to speak about another concept from his book—chasing your wildest dreams. He clarifies that the important part is not stopping once you've achieved one dream but continually planning to pursue the next one so as to avoid stagnation. In order to figure out those dreams, Dr. Yeager advises focusing on finding your genius, combating negative and bad-faith self-talk, letting go of outdated support systems, and being your own number one. And finally, Dr. Yeager shares how he uses his difference to make a difference by pointing out to others that while they will face obstacles, it is possible to pursue and do whatever you choose.Episode Highlights:Engaging with the person in the mirror Discovering yourself and understanding context Pursuing your wildest dreams Finding your genius and combating negative self-talk Being your best self for yourselfLinks:Connect with Dr. Yeager:Website: http://doctorcoreyyeager.com/Book: http://doctorcoreyyeager.com/bookConnect with Tayo Rockson and the As Told By Nomads Podcast:Tayo's Website: https://tayorockson.com/Tayo on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tayorockson/Tayo on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TayoRocksonTayo on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/tayorocksonTayo on TikTok: https://www.youtube.com/tayorocksonAs Told by Nomads Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/as-told-by-nomads/id910739730UYD Management: https://www.uydmanagement.com/UYD Collective: https://tayorockson.com/uyd-collective Hosted on Acast.
