The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 10th study session on Michael Meiers' Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment. This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in a Racially Restricted Region of Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and orchestrated the assassination of Congressman Leo Ryan. Some were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly 100 years, this event described as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their death in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers detailed the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk - both classified as White. The White male assassin, Dan White, was branded an "all-American" - which basically means White, and received way more sympathy than all of the hundreds of murdered black Jonestown survivors combined. White employed the "Twinkie Defense," alleging that after binging on junk food the evening of November 26th, a sugar stupor the following day caused him to mindlessly slaughter two White elected officials using hollow point bullets. He reloaded between the murders - and waved to future mayor Dianne Feinstein. White gays rioted in San Francisco to display their outrage over the lenient sentence White received - when he could have landed the death penalty. Meiers suggests that Jones was motivated to kill Mayor Moscone because he knew about the Peoples Temple's crimes and might snitch to investigators of the Guyana carnage. The prosecuting attorney, Joseph Freitas, was roundly criticized for his efforts and subjected to daily reminders and suspicion that he deliberately botched the 1976 investigation of voter fraud involving the Peoples Temple (and Mayor Moscone). Listeners and Gus T. think Meiers failed to present sufficient evidence of Jones' involvement in the murders and/or his motivation to kill these 2 White Men. (The bartender dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning the bouncers threw him in the dumpster out back. Again.) On the show this week we examine how a snack cake entered the lexicon of American jurisprudence. (Hint: It was the media.) Along the way we learn why Dave was such a fat little boy! (Little Debbies ARE delicious!) Then we explain the history of the Twinkie, which has absolutely NOTHING to do with the court case we eventually get around to talking about! (This is a very circuitous episode.) Finally we get into the court case in which case the aforementioned Twinkie is tangentially relevant. (We have a formula, folks.) Are you familiar with the White Night Riots? What about the name Harvey Milk? In San Francisco in 1978, a man named Dan White may or may not have consumed a Twinkie. And this may or may not have lead to him taking the life of mayor George Moscone and his arch nemesis, Board of Supervisor member, Harvey Milk. Does one thing seem not to correlate with the other? But regardless, the outcome of his trial was a slap in the face to the LGBTQ+ community. Enter the White Night Riots. The White Night Riots were a watershed moment in the LGBT rights movement. The protests brought national attention to the discrimination and violence faced by the LGBTQ community, and helped to galvanize support for the fight for equal rights and brought the police brutality issues the gay community was facing front and center. The riots also forced the city of San Francisco to confront its own history of discrimination and prejudice, and to take steps towards greater inclusion and acceptance. The Doodler is one of San Francisco's most infamous cold-case murderers. He is believed to have killed at least six and up to 14 men in San Francisco between January 1974 and September 1975. He prowled bars and restaurants in communities like The Castro & Tenderloin, lured men into sexual encounters before killing them and leaving their bodies on beaches or in parks around the city. He bought a water pik to go into his shower, and he still doesn't floss. So he thinks there should be an app to detect that you use the shower water pik, and if you don't use it, it blocks you from having hot water in the shower. That way, maybe he'll finally floss * Tom's car battery required a jump start. He didn't know this and called a tow truck, and he was humiliated, and so now he questions why cars even need batteries and/or electricity. Brake lights can be LED lights with tiny batteries built into the bulb. The speedometer and console (except the fuel gauge) can be a phone app. The electricity needed to start the car can be obtained by electric car charging stations, which are being added to parking spots. Also, cars without electricity might be the only cars to survive a coronal mass ejection or a nuclear bomb detonated in the Earth's magnetic field. This doc tells the story of Milk's rise to prominence and circumstances that led to the double assassination.
