In Episode 8 of Profiles in Franceformation, I interviewed Sandy Anderson, a retired English teacher who is a fellow graduate of the Middlebury College French School, which I also attended. Sandy, an American, was born in Ontario, Canada, went to school in Jamaica, and considers herself a “third culture kid,” as she grew up without the same cultural references as her American peers. We talk about how she developed her career and the challenges of maintaining relationships and friendships in the community of expatriated Americans in France. In this episode, we discuss: How Sandy started learning French as a child in Ontario, Canada, and continued her study through the British school system in JamaicaWhy it was difficult to start college in the US as an American kid who had lived all over the world, and the challenges of making friends when you don't have the same cultural referencesHow arriving in France in 1969, just after the May 1968 riots, into a completely renewed French university system, gave Sandy the opportunity to take classes at the SorbonneThe difficulty of being a foreign student in a French university, where you can't express yourself in French as well as a French student -- and a funny story about when Sandy used the new "contrôle continu" grading system to her advantageWhat happened when Sandy wanted to stay in France after graduating from Middlebury, and how she was able to land a work contract teaching English back before the UK joined the EU in 1973.The crisis Sandy experienced after around 7 years in France when she ultimately decided to spend the rest of her life in France. How Sandy's career developed over 30 years, from teaching English, to teaching technology, to teaching technology in English, and how she was ultimately downsized and forced into retirementThe dangers of being hired as an autoentrepreneur instead of as a salaried employeeHer main criticism of the FrenchWhen other Americans think we're communists because we live in France - and what communism (and real politics in France) actually looks likeWhy Sandy made the decision not to become FrenchWhat irritates Sandy about the community of Americans in France, and the things she just doesn't understand about some people who move here and about Americans back in the States.

Have you had experienced, competent, professional mentors throughout your farming journey? If not, it could make all the difference in how you run your farm! Joining me today on this special 100th episode for the Thriving Farmer Podcast, are two of my long time personal mentors, Paul and Sandy Arnold. They are the owners and founders of Pleasant Valley Farm. Pleasant Valley is a small, family run farm. For over 30 years they have provided their community with the freshest, highest quality and tastiest vegetables, herbs and fruits grown with organic methods. They sell over 90% of their produce directly at local farmers markets and the rest to local outlets and renowned farm-to-table restaurants. Since 2007 they have supplied a full array of vegetables and herbs year-round using unheated, large high tunnels and carefully controlled root storage. They run everything like a business by focusing on efficiency, lean principles, customer driven marketing practices, constant improvements, crop research, and use of cutting edge technology. Tune in today for this very special episode to hear me speak with my mentors about all things farming!   You’ll hear: What got Paul and Sandy into farming 2:14 How important it is for them to farm as a team 6:52 About their roles on the farm 7:53 How they managed to run their operation with lean labor for so long 11:57 How Paul and Sandy keep their team active 15:24 About the management principles at Pleasant Valley Farm 19:01 How Sandy and Paul leveraged credit cards 21:46 How Sandy and Paul manage their market sheet 27:02 How their irrigation system is set up 32:04 What their marketing policy is 36:00 About the education side of Pleasant Valley Farm 43:21 What kind of equipment they utilize on Pleasant Valley farm 49:33 Paul and Sandy’s best piece of advice for a new farmer 1.00.42   About the Guests:After growing up in suburbia, Paul worked at a nursery/greenhouse operation in his early 20’s.  At the age of 27, he traveled across the United States, became enamored with farming as he saw the many acres of fields being plowed.  After visiting a farmer’s market in Michigan with a friend, he knew he wanted to be a farmer and sell at farmers’ markets. Paul came home, worked for a summer with a local farmer, then started farming on an acre in his parents’ back yard in South Glens Falls, NY in 1987.  Realizing that this was his real passion in life, Paul purchased 60 acres of land in Argyle in 1988. The 60 acres of land, which overlooked a scenic valley and was just cornfields at the time, became Pleasant Valley Farm. Sandy Olmsted grew up in many parts of the country, mostly in Maine and New York, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Botany. Sandy has always had a passion for traveling, and has been in every U.S. state as well as more than 20 countries around the world.  She worked in management at garden centers and development businesses prior to marrying Paul in 1991 in Argyle, NY. While Sandy and Paul established Pleasant Valley Farm, they lived in a pop-up camper for two summers before building their house on their land.  The farm buildings began as historic barns with slate roofs which they took down at a nearby farm and put back up at Pleasant Valley Farm. All infrastructure, including electricity, water, sewer, propane, and other farm buildings came over time, with the work done by Paul, Sandy and Paul’s Dad, Bion. In 1992, Robert was born in November, and three years later, on Christmas Day in 1995, Kim was born.   For many years, Sandy and Paul juggled being full-time farmers, parents, and they home-schooled their children until both children went off to college. Kim and Robert from a very early age, worked many hours each week, helping to make Pleasant Valley Farm a very successful family farm, with Paul’s parents being key partners as well since they lived 20 minutes away. Since 1992, Pleasant Valley Farm has given the Arnold’s their sole source of income through selling at local farmers’ markets and a few wholesale accounts (restaurants, caterers, and stores).  In 2006, they began winter production in high tunnels, which has had a huge impact in the northeast for marketing year-round and increasing profits for farmers.   Resources:Website - http://pvfproduce.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/pvfproduce Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/pvfproduce/

Joy is not always found in big, milestone events. Sometimes, especially during times of chaos, the greatest joys are found in small, everyday moments.  Today’s episode is a lighthearted take on some of the joys and hustles of this wild and crazy year, but predominantly the joys – things that we would like to celebrate, despite the fact that we’ve spent most of 2020 within the confines of our own homes!  As we enter fall, we’d like to share with you some recommendations for the things we have been grateful for during lockdown, things that have brought us peace, a sense of freedom, pause to reflect, or simple, unadulterated pleasure. Tune in to find out more!   Key Points From This Episode: How the Aarke Sparkling Water Maker has helped Sandy drink more water each day. Why Jeni bought herself a pickup truck that, to her, is the definition of freedom. How Sandy discovered Planterina on YouTube and the value of Facebook Marketplace. Why we all need to understand the impact of social media on our lives and the manipulation. Our ability to create new technologies is surpassing our ability to solve ethical problems. Sandy talks about her new favorite app, iNaturalist, which helps you identify flora and fauna. Jeni’s new favorite app is one that is quite similar, and it’s a plant-identifier called PictureThis. Sandy highly recommends Big Friendship and the Call Your Girlfriend Podcast by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman. This week on MIA Radio, we interview Dr. Sandy Steingard. Dr. Steingard is Medical Director at Howard Center, a community mental health center where she has worked for the past 21 years. She is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the College of Medicine of the University of Vermont. For more than 25 years, her clinical practice has primarily included patients who have experienced psychotic states. Dr. Steingard serves as Board Chair of the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care. She was named to Best Doctors in America in 2003 and writes regularly for Mad in America. She is editor of the book Critical Psychiatry, Controversies and Clinical Implications due in 2019. In this episode we discuss: What led Sandy to her career in psychiatry and her particular interest in the critical aspects of psychiatry and psychology. That Sandy’s initial interest was in biomedical explanations of psychotic experiences. How, in the late 80s, the advent of new antipsychotic drugs caused an initial excitement because of the promises made about safety and efficacy, but that Sandy came to realise the problems with the drugs. How she witnessed the over-promotion of the drugs and that the promotion was markedly different to the results of studies and her observations of patients that were taking them. How a series of disappointments and recognition of some inherent flaws in psychiatry led Sandy to her interest in alternatives. That the book, The Truth About the Drug Companies by Marcia Angel MD, had a big impact on Sandy’s view of the drugs during the 2000s. Other influential books were The Daily Meds by Melody Petersen and Side Effects by Alison Bass. That reading Anatomy of an Epidemic and particularly the problematic aspects of the long-term use of antipsychotic drugs caused Sandy to question how she was practising. That she found colleagues were sometimes angry at the conclusion that antipsychotic drugs might not be safe or lead to better outcomes for patients. That this led to the investigation of alternatives such as Open Dialog, training with Mary Olsen at the Institute of Dialogic Practice and discovering the Critical Psychiatry Network and the work of Dr. Joanna Moncreiff. How Sandy approaches practising from a critical perspective, particularly when expectations are in line with the dominant biomedical narrative. Her book, Critical Psychiatry, due in 2019 which aims to help clinicians apply transformational strategies in their clinical practices. That psychiatrists would be well served by welcoming lived experience input to their daily practice. Why informed consent should be viewed as an ongoing process rather than a one-time agreement. The problems that arise in clinical studies where experience is translated into a numerical form. In this conversation, you’ll hear how Sandy has led her marketing team into uncharted territory by focusing on direct interaction with customers in order to gain a marketing edge. From sit-down meetings with the customer-operators of their systems to partnering with others in her industry to create effective demonstrations at industry events, Sandy’s approach has tried things unheard of for a marketing team. But more importantly, her efforts have been proven to increase her company’s revenue.   Marketing Power Tip: Focus On Direct Customer Engagement It’s not typically the marketing department’s job to engage directly with customers. Most organizations leave that task to customer support, account managers or the sales team. But Sandy saw an untapped opportunity for her marketing team through direct customer engagement, so she stepped into what has become a very successful approach. In this conversation, you’ll hear how Sandy has trained her marketing team to connect with customers in non-threatening ways in order to gather use-case stories, assess the true benefits and problems customers have with their systems, and provide data and intel to her company department-wide. This has enabled her to refine the company’s messaging, build greater trust with customers, and add to the bottom line revenue of the business in tangible ways. Building Strategic Marketing Relationships Through Industry Events Every industry has its high profile events. Sadly, some of them can be boring, low return activities that are not truly beneficial to those who participate. Rather than bemoan the unexciting nature of her industry’s events, Sandy chose to leverage them to serve her marketing goals. She reached out to companies in her industry who provided complementary services or technologies to her own and formed what she refers to as “affiliate” partnerships for the event. Together, she and her affiliate partners demonstrated the effectiveness of her software solutions in hands-on, practical ways that brought both company’s solutions to life. In many cases, Sandy created an opportunity so appealing that her affiliate partners were willing to pay for the entire thing. You can hear Sandy describe her approach and learn how you can do the same thing, on this episode.     Featured on This Episode Sandy Abraham on LinkedIn Forcam Outline of This Episode [1:46] What is Forcam doing and what is Sandy’s role? Sandy and I had a great conversation about her husband, her kids, and the way ADHD affects their family.  One aspect of this episode that I love is the symmetry of it -  the topics we discuss early on in our conversation return again at the end, allowing us to go into more depth in them the second time through.   I was impressed with Sandy's honesty and willingess to be vulerable, as well as the clear love she has for her husband.  Being married to ADHD can be hard at times, and I appreciated her willingness to go there during her time on the show.   And she seemed to find some meaning in the thoughts and ideas that I shared.  Which is nice, since helping people is my main goal in doing this. I hope you find meaning in this episode as well. As usual, I can be found at ADHDessentials.com. Or email me at brendan@ADHDessentials.com. It’s a joy and honor to bring this final episode of Season Two, Episode #34, with my own mother Fran Lieberman and her dear friend Sandy Klasky, who are celebrating their book club’s 50th anniversary. I couldn’t think of a more special way to close this season then reflecting with two women, who are mothers and grandmothers, on the lessons of their E.P.I.C. lives across decades, how they’ve passed on values of social justice to their children and grandchildren, the power of friendship, and of shared experiences, like reading books together, to build community. In this episode, we talk about what shaped my mother and Sandy as they emerged from the stable years of the 1940’s and 1950’s into the tumultuous times of the 1960’s and 1970’s, the ways they sought to have impact beyond their family as women when there were fewer opportunities open to them, how they invested in their own interests and friendships while raising their children, and looking back now, the wisdom and advice they would offer to their younger selves. The 50th anniversary of their book club, and how it’s been an important constant in their lives, is a thread we weave throughout the episode and the challenge they offer us is to read books that they felt made a profound impact on them. They share the reason behind the success and longevity of their book club and friendship and also some snapshot moments from across the years that they will always remember. Stay through to the end for a funny blooper reel capturing some behind the scenes moments of what it took to persevere through the challenges to record the podcast episode. It was a testament to the power of what’s possible with today’s technology and to holding a growth mindset no matter what your age. I loved the perspective and inspiration that shines through this unique conversation on the podcast and I hope you will too. So, get comfortable, pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee, or maybe a glass of wine, and settle into the wisdom from these two life-long friends. This episode dedicated by: Emily Cretella of MotherHustle. Learn more at www.motherhustle.com Topics discussed in this episode: My mother and Sandy’s social justice roots, one forged as a student in New York where she was exposed to different cultures, religions, and races and one that grew from experiences of living in a segregated city of Detroit The trauma of the 1960’s and 1970’s, including the deaths of leaders like John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, and how our country has risen before from tumultuous times The multigenerational influence Sandy and my mother have had on their children and grandchildren, especially as a result of sharing values and experiences around politics and social justice and how Sandy’s daughter, Stephanie Klasky-Gamer, was featured in LA Magazine for her leadership as President and CEO of LA Family Housing. The story of how the book club got started with women who were focused on raising their children and sought connection and intellectual stimulation. Also, what has enabled the club to endure through so many years. The difference in the way they had to do research for their book club discussions in the past, going to the library and photocopying materials vs. now that we have the internet. Snapshot book club moments my mother and Sandy will always remember, like coming together on 9/11 and when their dear friend, and founder of the club, Judy Duroff passed away. How Sandy and I both identify with having had a mid-life Renaissance and the importance of following your heart to create your E.P.I.C. life. The advice Fran and Sandy would give to their younger selves. The books from their book club that made a lasting impact on them.
