In August of 2020, when the world was quarantined inside consuming streaming content like never before, Apple TV+ launched Ted Lasso. In search of a hit to match the growing success of Netflix and make themselves a force in the subscription-based streaming wars, Apple took a chance on the creative powers of Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence and others. As well as faith that a promotional skit created to help NBC launch its coverage of the Premier League, that had twice gone viral, could evolve to become a sustainable and successful comedy. Ted Lasso became a runaway hit, launching Sudeikis even further into Hollywood superstardom. The show also brought an entirely new fan base into the world of soccer, while building a sophisticated commentary around the idea that Americans could integrate with a traditional English soccer culture, and be accepted, maybe even succesful. Andrés Martinez wrote an article in the LA Times detailing how the show was a match made in globalizer heaven. He joined Foundign Futbol to talk about how the show connected so many in America to the game in ways the country had never experience. Martinez also discusses how the momentum the show gave Apple TV may have carried it deeper into the soccer market. Vaccines, oil spills, genetic engineering, and stem cells—anywhere there's science, there's also misinformation. It muddies our ability to make good decisions, ranging from far-reaching ones like creating policy to simple ones like what to buy at the grocery store. Misinformation also undermines trust in scientific institutions and across society. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine tasked an expert committee with addressing misinformation. Their report,Understanding and Addressing Misinformation About Science, is out now. On this episode, hostMonya Baker is joined byAsheley Landrum, one of the authors of the report and an associate professor at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication. One of our favorite things is the impact of great employers on individuals, small towns, and the overall culture of the communities they operate within, and this episode is all about what happens when an amazing work culture fosters amazing things outside of the workplace. Amanda Gregory and Joe House both work for a manufacturing company called Design Ready Controls and co-founded MAKE (Manufacturing, a Kid's Experience) in 2023 as a way to foster awareness about and interest in manufacturing in a way kids can understand. MAKE is about showing kids what kinds of possibilities exist in the manufacturing space and helping parents who work in manufacturing share what they do with their days in a kid-friendly way. Although entirely separate from their “day job,” the collaborative, open culture of Design Ready Controls directly influenced Amanda and Joe's efforts and takes workforce development and passion to a whole new level, and we're here for it. About MAKE: MAKE was founded in 2023 by Amanda Gregory and Joe House to educate children about manufacturing. The MAKE platform began with sharing stories about manufacturing through Blake Explores Manufacturing. Now with a monthly newsletter, Future Makers, they continue to inspire through building activities and manufacturing tours & experiences. About Joe: Joe started with Design Ready Controls in 2022 as Chief Commercial Officer, working alongside sales, marketing, and supply chain teams to strengthen our industry-leading customer and supplier partnerships. Prior to joining the team, Joe spent 9 years in sales leadership at an electrical distributor, where he worked as both a supplier and customer of Design Ready Controls. Joe graduated from the University of Saint Thomas in 2013 with degrees in Mathematical Economics and Business Management. About Amanda: Amanda joined the Design Ready Controls team in 2015, starting in office management and 5S initiatives. She quickly advanced to take on leadership roles in marketing and now leads marketing, sales development, internal communications, and office management. Amanda earned a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication with a minor in Marketing from Winona State University. Her professional background includes account and project management, as well as marketing experience in the produce and manufacturing industries. You can call in for your friends, too, because giving shout-outs is one of our favorite things.  “Solving Your Small-Town People Challenges”: Have a tough issue in your community? We want to help. In some ways, there are two Louisianas. There's the one the tourism marketing folks sell to visitors, centered on New Orleans on one side of Baton Rouge and Cajun Country on the other. And then there's the Louisiana that we live in, which is Baton Rouge. Maybe to tourist salespeople it looks like there's nothing very exciting going on here, but that is far from the truth. Baton Rouge is anything but a civil-service seat of government town like other state capitals. Though we do have a decent number of people who work in government departments, we also have people who create a unique Louisiana culture that's a tapestry made up of all kinds of threads that are drawn together here. This tapestry is created by people like Stephanie's two lunch guests: Oscar Tickle and Kimberly Szuszka. Oscar is a multimedia producer and content editor at Melara Enterprises, which publishes the Baton Rouge Business Report and 225 magazine, among other publications. And in his job there, Oscar gets to help tell some of those interesting Baton Rouge stories through videos and podcasts. Oscar joined the company in 2023, after graduating from the LSU Manship School of Mass Communications as a journalism major with a focus on environmental reporting. He also has made his own documentary – a fascinating 45-minute film about the Hunt for Louisiana’s Swamp Cows. Kimberly Szuszka is adding to the unique cultural tapestry in Baton Rouge with Okki Tokki, the city’s only Korean restaurant. Kimberly opened the restaurant in 2024 in the heart of downtown and specializes in a casual, build-your-own bowls model, with a focus on exposing customers to the kinds of authentic Korean ingredients diners from around here may not be accustomed to seeing. Kimberly grew up in Baton Rouge and opened the restaurant because she said she always wanted to have a Korean restaurant in her city and after graduating from LSU, decided to fill the void herself. She is also active in promoting Asian culture through organizations like the Asian Night market, which we talked about on this show previously. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Energy storage is considered the holy grail that would unlock a vast increase in solar and wind renewable electricity generation. That's the topic for the latest episode of Grid Talk featuring Will McNamara who is a Grid Energy Policy Storage Analyst with Sandia National Laboratories.Six national energy labs and a cohort of 200 partners across the energy industry have joined together in a moonshot effort to vastly expand energy storage in America. It is all being coordinated through the National Consortium for the Advancement of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies. “There was a proposal call issued by the Department of Energy offering funds to the national labs to create an industry forum focused on the many challenges that are facing long-duration energy storage technologies and create this forum so that the industry can come together and address these challenges,” said McNamara The goal is to boost storage technology on a large scale from about four hours duration to 10 hours.“The sun doesn't always shine, the wind doesn't always blow so we need to find a way to store the energy to make it dispatchable, hence the need for energy storage, so we are absolutely in this evolutionary period. We are building the constructs for the future.”In his role as Grid Energy Storage Policy Analyst for Sandia National Laboratories, McNamara focuses on energy storage policy development at the federal and state levels. He has spent his entire 23-year career in the energy and utilities industry with a concentration on regulatory and legislative policy.  Additional areas of subject matter expertise include distributed energy resources, AMI/smart grid, renewables, and competitive retail markets.McNamara has an M.B.A. from University of Phoenix, an M.A. in Mass Communications from the University of Iowa, and a B.A. in Political Science and Journalism from the University of Iowa.

In this episode, we dive into the powerful themes and emotional depth of Scent of a Woman with our guest, Saylor Cooper, host of the Hope Without Sight Podcast, founder of Real Variety Radio, and a Mass Communications major. Together, we reflect on the key moments and moral complexities of the film, unpacking its layered storytelling and incredible performances. We begin by examining Charlie's moral dilemma, where the young prep school student faces an impossible choice: stick to his principles or betray them to protect his future. The internal conflict Charlie endures serves as a powerful exploration of integrity and the pressures of conformity, which resonated deeply in our discussion. Saylor shared how this moment highlights the universal challenge of choosing what's right over what's easy.Next, we discuss Frank's borderline plea to endure, as Al Pacino's portrayal of the blind, retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade reveals a man on the edge of despair. Frank's struggle to find meaning and purpose leads to some of the film's most heart-wrenching moments, as his pain underscores the importance of human connection and self-worth. Saylor and I reflected on how Frank's plea is a raw, emotional plea for resilience in the face of life's darkest moments. We then explored the film's central message of "living life spontaneously," embodied by Frank's philosophy and his determination to teach Charlie the value of seizing the moment. From their escapades in New York City to Frank's infamous tango scene, the film beautifully captures the essence of living life with passion, even when faced with adversity. This theme became a focal point of our discussion, as we considered how the film encourages audiences to embrace life's unpredictability. Finally, we delve into Frank's role as a mentor to Charlie, guiding him through a transformative journey. Frank's tough-love approach and moments of vulnerability push Charlie to grow and stand up for what he believes in. Saylor and I discussed how their dynamic is not only central to the film but also a reminder of the impact one person can have on another's life, even in the most unexpected ways.In conclusion, Scent of a Woman is a masterful exploration of morality, resilience, and human connection. The film's timeless themes and unforgettable performances continue to inspire audiences, reminding us of the importance of integrity, spontaneity, and mentorship. Join us as we reflect on this cinematic classic and the lessons it imparts.

On Nov. 16, 1972,  police officers shot and killed two Southern University students, Denver Smith and Leonard Brown, during a peaceful college protest. The shooting and its ripple effects are the subject of a new investigative podcast called Bitter Jaguar. It's written, produced and hosted by Gulf States Newsroom reporter Drew Hawkins and stems from an investigation from the LSU Cold Case Project — a class for students at the Manship School of Mass Communication. He spoke with WRKF's Karen Henderson about the five-part series. Monday was Veterans Day, and this week on Louisiana Considered, we are diving into the state's military history and the contributions of its servicemen and women.Earlier this week, we brought you a conversation on Black military history at Southern University and other HBCUs, and today we are exploring the story of the Frenchies. He was inspired by his marine biologist grandfather to consider a career working with animals, but the math of it all pointed him in a more creative direction. His parents did not have access to education, which meant Gabriel had to navigate the unwritten rules of academia on his own. Listen to the story of how the kid with a 2.9 GPA earned his PhD and became Assistant Professor of Media Studies in the department of Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Dr. Cruz shares some of his research on intersectional critical race analysis of popular culture, especially superhero narratives. The technological sublime refers to the awe, admiration, and fear that arise when encountering a monumental technological advancement. AI, particularly generative AI, elicits a sense of technological sublime due to its ability to push the boundaries of human creativity and intelligence. However, there is also a sense of apprehension and concern about the societal impacts of AI and the potential loss of human values. The conversation also touches on the importance of privacy, media literacy, and critical thinking in the age of deepfakes.  ---------------- Learn more about our guest: https://www.nu.edu/degrees/arts-and-humanities/faculty/federica-fornaciari/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/federica-fornaciari/ ---------------- Thank you to our show sponsor: Lebra https://www.lebrahq.com/
