We get it, sometimes you want to dig your head in the sand to avoid the awkward (+ slightly painful) conversations about your personal finances. But, it's time to rip the bandaid off, and fix your credit!!   In today's episode, Zuri is opening up about how paralyzed and fearful she felt in her early 20s, when it came to paying off her debt and re-building her credit health. From her traumatic experience of having the toughest time trying to finance a new car (despite making 6 figs!) and how it was the wake-up call she needed to change her life and take control of her finances (won't He do it?!)…   If you're ready to change your life, stick around, because Zuri is sitting down with America's Favorite Finacial Educator, Tiffany Aliche aka The Budgetnista -- and we're DIVING DEEP into the credit of it all! Tiffany is breaking it down and schoolin' us on how to Get Good With Money! She explains wth a FICO score even is; why credit is so important; the ideal credit score you need to buy a house; how to raise your credit score WITHOUT a credit card (you will LOVE these hacks); and why we need to say HELL NO to cash advances!   Next, in our signature “Real Woman, Real Story” segment -- Z chats with Korbyn Lloyd who shares how she paid off $130,000 of debt in 26 months, just in time for her 30th birthday. Korbyn takes us through the budgeting hacks she learned, and why she picked up a side-hustle (while working a full-time job!).   All that sound good to you? Fantastic. Hit play and tune in, because the keys to financial freedom are within your grasp and the first thing you gotta do is leap into the mess that is your debt and begin the journey to fix your life! EverydayCPA Podcast | Tax Preparation | Tax Issue Resolution | Business Strategy and Tactics| Business Formation

My name is Kelly Coughlin. I am a CPA and the CEO of EveryDayCPA. And I am a failure. I am a successful accountant…but I am a failure entrepreneur. Today, I could talk to you about my career working for BIG companies…a BIG accounting firm, PWC; a BIG investment firm, Merrill Lynch, and a BIG bank, Lloyds Bank. I’ve had a happy and successful career in Seattle, Minneapolis, New York and London. Or I could talk to you about what we do at EVERYDAYCPA…with our STAR services…I could show you how we use Sun Tzu and Michael Porter from Harvard business school in our business strategy work. And I can show you how we can get the federal and state government to pay about 30% of your costs to start a business. And if you have past tax liabilities and we can get it reduced by over 50%. Or I could show you how we use ACCOUNTING debits and credits as weapons of MASS DESTRUCTION of your competition. And RISK, I could show you how to minimize the risk of contingent loss and risk of audit…I could do all that…But I’m not going to do any of that. What I AM going to do is talk about why I am a failure…or rather why I WAS a failure….in the entrepreneur space. About 15 years ago, I started down the path towards SMALL business startup…how hard could that be…I was educated (CPA and MBA)…I had great BIG company experience. I had some capital. I couldn’t help but succeed. RIGHT? Wrong!!. It was a path to FAILURE!! Eventually, I succeeded. I love the quote from a very successful venture capital guy in Silicon Valley. ”Fail often, so you can succeed sooner.” In 2013, I sold a financial technology company I started in Minneapolis. The financial cost, risk, and rewards were big; but the non-financial costs were even greater and unfortunately VERY difficult to recover. I AM going to talk about why the enormous price that is paid in startups…not financial…but intangible…unhappy shareholders during the failing years…nervous vendors and bankers during lean cash flow quarters…and then the personal stuff…the day to day stuff that causes failed marriages,...poor relationships with children…and unhealthy diet and exercise. These are the true costs. It is helping entrepreneur wann-abe s mitigate these costs that is my sweet spot passion today. It is what I call TNT: Tactics, Need Timing. Based on my experience as a FAILURE, getting TNT right…or wrong…will determine what the true cost will be. Is the cost limited to financial investments and opportunity cost, that is the cost of not doing something else, while you are pursuing this new idea or dream? Or Is the cost fully burdened with the carnage from failed relationships with vendors, spouses, and children coupled with bad health and diet? Tactics Need Timing. What TACTICS will you utilize to implement your plan? How will you incubate your business? Will you outsource to start it or will you do it yourself? Are you going to quit your job or work at night and weekends? Are you going to use your own money or try to get other peoples’ money? NEED assessment is important. Does your market NEED your products or service versus your competitors. Who are your competitors…who are your substitutes? And if you say you don’t have any competitors, you definitely need help. People have millions of places they can spend their money. So, in a sense every product and service on the planet earth is your competition. I referenced Michael Porter earlier. Every business owner and frankly anybody involved in the revenue side of an enterprise should understand Porter’s Five Force Analysis on their business. Porter’s Five Forces are Rivals, Substitutes, Suppliers, Buyers, and New Entrants. These are the five forces that need to be understood before launching a business. And that leads to last one, TIMING. It’s the one most easily controlled and fortunately most important. In 1812 Napoleon had his million-man Grand Armee ready to take on the Russians. Napoleon was a brilliant military strategist…but he made a critical tactical mistake that cost him about 600,000 men’s lives and ultimately some historians say, cost him the war. His TIMING was bad. He launched his march on Moscow way too close to the winter season in Russia and ridiculously cold weather completely harmed his ability to win. Bad timing. In the startup world, it translates into, for example, maybe if your wife is due in six months, don’t leave your job yet to start the deal. Rather, outsource some things and work the deal at night. Tactics Need Timing (TNT) doesn’t NECESSARILY determine whether your path is one of failure or success. Rather, TNT determines how rough the road is…how many people did you hit and hurt along the way…and how happy and healthy you are during the journey and how happy and healthy you are when you finish and arrive. So, today we certainly help all small business owners with STAR services…strategy, tax, accounting and risk management. We have found that many small business owners simply don’t have the financial resources to pay for CFOs, CPAs, and marketing experts…they are expensive…I know this…I sold these expert services while at PWC….and I BOUGHT those services at Lloyds Bank. But WHAT I PERSONALLY REALLY LOVE TO DO is help the entrepreneur family,  with a startup idea they want to monetize; or the entrepreneur who simply wants to STOP working for THE MAN; or the entrepreneur who is retiring and wants to stay in the game, in part frankly because he knows he knows the stats…it is more likely he will die within 24 months if he gets out of the game. Some of you know, I like to box and I like to run 5ks and 10ks. And my performance has waned over the past ten years in these areas. But fortunately, there are a few things that ONLY gets better with age, experience and wisdom. And this is one of them. The clarity that TACTICS NEED TIMING must be considered before launching a business…and getting this right, will determine not only what the easily recoverable financial cost will be…but more importantly, it will determine the personal and relationship cost that no business transaction will ever recover. Thank you for your time.

Hey converts! It feels good to be back behind the mic! April was a busy month! Taxes were due to be filed and I had and audit for the previous year's taxes. Yikes! My wife and I Bought two houses using the 1031 exchange program to defer taxes on a house we sold in March. We rented both houses in just a couple of weeks. It feels good to have an additional source of revenue. I also helped Steve Stewart from MoneyPlanSOS.com buy a cash car. I recently read a book called The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. There was a great quote in the book. It really resonated with me. "What's the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" What if I told you if you did this one thing you could retire wealthy? Would you want to know what it is? This one thing. If you knew what this one thing was, would you do something about it? For most people, the answer is no. Shocked? You shouldn’t be. After all, millions of people smoke, eat unhealthy, or engage in other risky or unhealthy behaviors. These are life and death matters. If one won’t change to extend their own life, why would you or I think one would change simply to ensure a better retirement? Well, if you’ve been listening to this show, I’ve been telling. If fact I’ve been telling you since December of 2013. It may or may not shock you, but for most of you listening the one thing is the car payment. Really, the car payment? Doesn’t everyone have a car payment? Isn’t that just normal? Yes it is and there in lies the insidiousness of it. People quietly pay their lives away to drive a newer, sexier, faster, cooler, and whatever other er you can think of. Every day someone agrees to pay away their future for a car. Why is the car payment the one thing? Well, your mortgage is going to something that actually can help you build wealth. We found out in 2008, it doesn’t always, but for most of us and for most of history, this is true. What about student loan debt? It’s all over the news, isn’t that the worst debt? No, a bachelor degree is still worth about $800,000 in additional income over the course of a lifetime of employment. While I’m not encouraging anyone to take on this debt, the average student loan debt of $28,000 seems like a pretty good trade for that average return of $800,000. Do you still have a car payment? Why? Haven’t you been paying attention? Haven’t your heard? Auto debt is dangerous to your financial future! This is not a throw away line I just like to say on my show. This is what I believe! I know, I know. You can’t make that change right now because..…because… you know just pick your excuse. 1. You just “need” a new car.2. You drive a lot, so reliability is important to you.3. You don’t want your spouse, kids, or any other loved one to be stranded.4. You don’t have the cash to buy that first cash car. For some who would be honest it would be all about ego. Maybe I “need” to look successful. Or my favorite, I work hard so I deserve to drive something nice. What can getting rid of your indebted car do for you?You can take a big bite out of your current debt. You can increase your available cash by the amount of your car payment.Save your first $1,000 emergency fundPay off your other debts at an accelerated pace.Start saving for your next cash car, retirement, or child’s education. 4Q 2014:Average new car payment - $482Average new car price - $33,000Average new car loan amount - $28,381Average new car loan duration - 66 months Today, I want you to make a commitment to me and yourself. Today, I want you to do one thing to start on your journey to dump your auto debt. It doesn’t have to be a big step, but it has to be a step, a start, a move in the right direction. Maybe it’s a plan to sell everything in that storage building you’re renting for over $100 a month. Who knows how much you might get? Maybe it’s looking on edmunds.com or kbb.com to see how much your current car is worth. Maybe it is finding out what the pay off is on your current car loan. Whatever it is do it today. Start the journey today, don’t wait. We can all speak of yesterday’s regrets, but don’t live to regret today. Today is the day! Now is the time! Take action! Dave was trying Media Fire for video streaming and they seemed to kind of load (buffer) the video. Dave used Vimeo for the School of Podcasting video tutorials. Testing the Phone System - Why Do I need an RSS Feed On My Website[29:00] The RSS feed is what carries all the information about your episodes so when people "point" (subscribe) to your show when you put out a new feed it is automatically delivered to you. Because not everyone uses iPhones, etc having an RSS feed on your website will help increase subscriptions. I do have a step by step tutorial at the School of Podcasting that walks you through this process. You can make a temporary post and upload an image, then attach a link to that button. Go to the html view and copy that code and paste it into a text widget in Wordpress. Check out subscribeandfollow.com for cool icons as well.   Time Releasing Your Podcast [43:08] You can schedule podcasts to be released in the future. If you are using the Powerpress feed you can copy and paste your mp3 into the proper aras and the post date it. If you use Libsyn.com for you need to post date both your website and libsyn so their feed isn't updated until the date you want. How Much Do I Charge for Podcast Consulting [47:55] This is all over the place. Some people from overseas charge $20 an hour. Others charge $400 an hour. Some people will charge $500 a month for four shows and that includes cutting out ums and ya knows, and you type up the show notes. Dave uses Harvest App to charge for one on one consulting. Jim charges around $75 an episode. You need to determine what you are doing. For example just stitching files together and tagging them is different than listening through the whole thing and cutting out ums and ya know (more time consuming). Audio editing is easy (if you like it), but you are trading time for money (which doesn't scale eventually). Many people use paypal. Harvest allows me to setup other items to accept payments (like stripe). If you can let them throw out the first number, see if you can make that happen. You have to determine what you time is worth. Dropbox is a valuable tool when doing audio editing.
