Leonard Bernstein, in his famous Norton Lectures, extolled repetition, saying that it gave poetry its musical qualities and that music theorists' refusal to take it seriously did so at their peril. In Play It Again, Sam: Repetition in the Arts (MIT Press, 2025), Samuel Jay Keyser explores in detail the way repetition works in poetry, music, and painting. He argues, for example, that the same cognitive function underlies both how poets write rhyme in metrical verse and the way songwriters like Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn (“Satin Doll”) and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart (“My Funny Valentine”) construct their iconic melodies. Furthermore, the repetition found in these tunes can also be found in such classical compositions as Mozart's Rondo alla Turca and his German Dances, as well as in galant music in general. The author also looks at repetition in paintings like Gustave Caillebotte's Rainy Day in Paris, Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans, and Jackson Pollock's drip paintings. Finally, the photography of Lee Friedlander, Roni Horn, and Osmond Giglia—Giglia's Girls in the Windows is one of the highest-grossing photographs in history—are all shown to be built on repetition in the form of visual rhyme. The book ends with a cognitive conjecture on why repetition has been so prominent in the arts from the Homeric epics through Duke Ellington and beyond. Artists have exploited repetition throughout the ages. The reason why is straightforward: the brain finds the detection of repetition innately pleasurable. Play It Again, Sam offers experimental evidence to support this claim. PLAY IT AGAIN? Captain Picard comes to the rescue of a woman he ghosted! Will it be awkward? Chill? A chance to do it all over again? Bryan and Kristen relive some of the worst that eighties TV had to offer as Patrick Stewart and Michelle Phillips act out trite melodrama in a story that deals with some cultural detritus that has been (seemingly) left behind in the 20th century -- you don't see too many naked ripoffs of Casablanca these days! There's also some stuff about a time fart in here that fails to inspire when it's not a little confusing; but, does Michelle Phillips' experience with people tripping on acid help her performance in this one and does the science fiction B-plot entertain just enough? If you've been enjoying the show, consider rating and reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, in the Spotify app, or wherever you listen to podcasts. In this episode, hosts Katherine Troyer and Toni Tresca discuss a classic that is also a remake of a classic...the 1979 horror film Nosferatu the Vampyre (German title: Phantom der Nacht).  Episode Highlights: We talk about the tone-setting (albeit odd) cold opening of the mummies and how, even if--as Toni proves--it is meaningful, Katherine kind of hated it. We explore the ways the film pays homage to as well as deviates from the 1922 film (and the original Dracula narrative), and how Herzog created a film that serves as both a powerful remake and a unique film in its own right. We look at the film's examination of the chaos of a plague/pandemic, the beautiful and haunting shots of rats and empty streets, and the characterization of Lucy. And Katherine suggests that this might be one of the gayest films ever... A Dose of Scholarship: In this episode we referenced Lloyd Michael's essay "Nosferatu, or the Phantom of the Cinema" in the 1998 book Play It Again, Sam: Retakes on Remakes. We also mention S.S. Prawer's examination on Nosferatu published as part of the book series on BFI Modern Classics. This podcast episode first aired on July 1, 2022. A LONG TIME AGO ON THE VERONICA MARS SPIN-OFF WEB SERIES PLAY IT AGAIN DICK: Ryan Hansen persuades the CW suits to let him make a pilot for a Dick Casablancas spin-off show. So then he has to persuade the Veronica Mars actors to come back to reprise their roles... And then they all film Private Dick! Wherein Dick Casablancas is a private detective investigating the murders of several beloved Veronica Mars characters. There are masks! Punchings! Sexytimes! Pull-ups! Ghost Cassidy Casablancas! And bikinis as funeral-wear! And a catchphrase that never really takes off? Oh and a big dance number. Twice. Join Jenny Owen Youngs and Helen Zaltzman to investigate the official but non-canonical Veronica Mars spin-off web series Play It Again, Dick, and contemplate such mysteries as why Madison Sinclair is the MVP of the piece, how there is so much filler in such a short show, and why the CW didn't commission a Wallace'n'cookies-focused spin-off The Great Wallace Bake-Off. Content note:Play It Again, Dick contains racist jokes and references to rape and suicide. For more about this episode, and to read the transcript, visit the podcast's official site VMIpod.com/piad. Being tricked can be a pleasant or an unpleasant experience. For example, have you ever had a surprise party thrown in your honor? That can be a pleasant trick. Or if someone tricks you into thinking you're not getting the birthday gift you want, but lo and behold, you did get it. That's also pleasant. But a lot of tricks can be unpleasant too. Maybe a monster plays dead and tricks you into coming near only to gobble you up. Or maybe someone asks to borrow money with no intention of ever paying you back. That's pretty nasty. Maybe someone bonks you on the head to escape the punishment for their crimes. All of these unpleasant tricks actually take place in today's episode.    Former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell Interview on the Buckhead Business Show Sam Massell, Founding President The Buckhead Coalition Sam Massell, a life-long resident of Atlanta, has had successful careers in real estate brokerage, elected office, the field of tourism, and association management. He spent twenty years as a Realtor, becoming Vice President of Allan-Grayson Realty Company, then one of the city's largest commercial brokerage firms. During that time, he was elected a charter member of the Atlanta Real Estate Board's Million Dollar Club and was honored three times with the Cates Trophy by the Georgia Association of Real Estate Boards for creating the “Outstanding Transaction of the Year.” While in real estate, Massell became extremely active in a wide range of civic work, which eventually led to the political arena. He served twenty- two years in elected offices, including eight as President of Atlanta's Board of Aldermen (now known as the City Council) and four as this city's Mayor. While holding that office, he was also chosen as President of the 15,000- member National League of Cities. In addition, he has served a four-year term on the Board of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, and was a Board Member of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. Among other achievements, his administration as Mayor is credited with establishing MARTA (Atlanta's mass transit program), with developing the city's first enclosed arena (the Omni Coliseum), and with providing the “Five Points” Central City Woodruff Park, all with no call on ad valorem taxes. He also pioneered minority opportunities in city government, appointing the first female to Atlanta's City Council and the first Blacks as City Department heads. After leaving full-time public service, he entered the tourism business in Buckhead where he operated for thirteen years under the name of Your Travel Agent Sam Massell. He is a Certified Travel Counselor (CTC), and a former President of the Travel Industry Association of Georgia. Mayor Massell now manages a nonprofit civic organization as the 1988 founding President of the Buckhead Coalition. This is a prestigious association of Chief Executive Officers of major businesses in this area on the north side of Atlanta who have pooled their strengths to nurture the quality of life and guide the orderly growth of Buckhead. He has been honored by induction into the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau “Hospitality Hall of Fame”; Georgia Municipal Association “Government Hall of Fame”; Georgia State University Robinson College “Business Hall of Fame”; Georgia Trend Magazine “Most Influential Georgian's Hall of Fame”, and International Civil Rights King Center “Walk of Fame”. His life is chronicled in a biography (“Play It Again, Sam”) by Charles McNair and Mercer University Press. Topics to Discuss: Why did you decide to do a book - - and why did you choose this author?  How did your childhood days in elementary and high school at Druid Hills shape your civil conscience?  The book tells of a successful college political campaign that sounds unbelievable . . . until we hear the “other side of the story”. Will you elaborate?  You won a lot of top awards in real estate. Tell us about one of which you were particularly proud.  What drew you into the political arena, and if you had the chance to do it all over, would you have pursued a more lucrative business career instead?  I've learned that one of your earliest Atlanta political reforms was elimination of something called “Ward Courtesy”, which isn't in the book. Please explain this initiative.  What do you consider your greatest decision; what do you wish to be your legacy; what was your worst political mistake?  How in the world did you get in the tourism business, and was it satisfying?  You're credited with nurturing what was thought of as not much more than a sleepy,
