They didn't put an extra ~camp~ in the title for nothing! Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) is the sequel that did the absolute most by doing the absolute least. What this movie lacks in plot, it makes up for in pizzazz — and "party hats" galore. Seriously, it has its own in-universe Tit Patrol, and business is booming at Camp Rolling Hills. But while this flick may not have reached its full potential (a few camp songs does not a musical make), its CLEAR references and low-key celebrity siblings mean it's still more than worth a watch. On our latest Spooky Tuesday, we're comparing notes on our favorite quotes and kills as Angela returns for a second summer of fun. Franchises and sequels are a well trodden path for horror films and the 1980s saw a veritable boom of them. We discuss why the 80s were such a popular time for sequels before diving into two--and I do mean this--gems. As a bonus, both films covered in this episode are sequels to films we have covered in previous episodes! Why are horror sequels and franchises so popular? Are sequels ever better than the original? Strengthen your morals, creepies! By popular demand, Chris n' Cara are covering Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) and boy, oh boy...are they ever unhappy campers! This chaotic episode features two people running fevers who love you enough to still put on a show. Lots of tangents: the Olympics, other podcasts, and how gross we feel...and a little bit of the movie. Be a happy camper!
Joey Gabe and Chris talk... Sleepaway Camp (released as Nightmare Vacation in the United Kingdom) a 1983 American slasher film written and directed by Robert Hiltzik,[6] who also served as executive producer. It is the first film in the Sleepaway Camp film series, and tells the story of a young girl sent to a summer camp that becomes the site of a series of murders shortly after her arrival. It stars Felissa Rose, Katherine Kamhi, Paul DeAngelo, Mike Kellin (in his last screen appearance), and Christopher Collet (in his first). Released during the heyday of slasher movies, the film is known for its infamous twist ending,[7] considered to be one of the genre's most shocking. Since its release, the film received a positive critical response and a cult following. It was followed by three sequels, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988), Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989), and Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008).
Episode 27, we head back to the campfire for another horrific tale, as we discuss Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers. Angela is now fully rehabilitated, and "fixed" after the first movie, including a surgery to remove a little something that has been bothering her. This time around, she is the counselor, and is trying to instill good morals in the campers, by any means necessary! Join us as we dive into this sequel of a cult favorite, and learn a lesson or two from Angela! Also be sure to tune in next time as we jump start our month long anniversary celebration, and cover the entire Purge movie franchise. We all want more...right? Well, June 2021 looks to find those Unwanted sequels of films that Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) saw the original of...but never took the time to see the follow up. Sometimes, a sequel is enjoyable...sometimes it is downright terrible...and of course there are all the gray areas in-between. Who knows which of the quality categories the four films for June 2021 in the Unwanted theme will fall into. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. SLEEPAWAY CAMP II: UNHAPPY CAMPERS (1988) Angela, supposedly reformed and living under an assumed surname, is working at a summer camp. However, when the campers start misbehaving, she soon reverts to her old ways. Directed by Michael A. This week the Hack or Slash team tackles a sequel by breaking down the horror comedy Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers. The group discusses the vilification of mental illness, the weaponization of sex, and the quality of the franchise's approach to transgender representation. The group also debates the responsibility sequels have to uphold the original's legacy, unpacks the true horror of outhouses, and looks back on their own camp experiences. This episode contains spoilers.

Doug is mad! He's so mad at this movie that he even recommends a movie he doesn't like at the end of the episode. Jamie absolutely loves the Shit Sisters and tries clinging to that to help her get through this film. Listener's Choice month continues as we move on to our 2nd most requested movie, Sleepaway Camp (1983). Honestly, it's strange we haven't already covered this (although we did watch the sequel, Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers). Odd duck Angela and her cousin Ricky spend a summer weekend at Camp Arawak where, almost immediately, people begin dying one by one. What beef does the slasher hold against this wholesome, cheerful bunch of boys and girls? Listen as we talk about required reading in the horror genre, gender confusion, 80's fashions, and the importance of a strong ending on this week's exciting episode! Nothing says Halloween like a good ol' Haunt. From the writers of A Quiet Place comes this low-budget movie about a special kind of haunted attraction. But does Haunt live up to the writers/directors' newfound reputation? School's back in session which means Summer is wrapping up. So Brian, John, and Elaine take one last look at one of the hallmarks of summer fun; summer camp...specifically, the 1983 Friday the 13th rip off, Sleepaway Camp. Does Sleepaway Camp belong among the Pantheon of Utter Shit or is it just a goofy fun b movie? Grab your sleeping bag, swim shorts, and communal shower flip flops as we dive into this toasted marshmallow of B movie goodness. Movie News! Animators Report Pay Disputes/Mistreatment During Production of Sausage Party Sleepaway Camp (1983) Classic 1980's Slasher...with a Twist This movie, despite being a very obvious Friday the 13th rip off uses the interesting idea of sexuality of the killer as the motivation for the murders. The idea of Angela being transgendered was extremely controversial for the time. This extra layer of gender confusion and reaction to homosexuality in the 80's does make this movie stand out among other slashers B Movie Tropes God awful acting....With the exception of Aunt Martha played by Desiree Gould. Fantastic practical makeup effects for a low budget film. Lots and lots of misdirection of who the killer is. Plot is fairly terrible....but not as bad as other slasher films. Some really terrible lines of dialogue. Total Kills 2 deaths by speedboat collision 1 death by scalding by boiling water 1 death by drowning 1 death by beehive dropped on head/stung by bees 1 death by knife impalment in shower and sliced open 4 deaths by being hacked apart in sleeping bag 1 death by pillow smothering/ impaled through vagina with hot hair curling iron. 1 death by arrow shot through throat 1 death by decapitation Total Kills-13 Sequels Spawned 4 sequels and a rebooted sequel Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers starred Bruce Springsteen's sister, Pamela Springsteen. Part II is more of a goofy murder by numbers film with more focus on elaborate deaths and less on the gender identity issues of the first film. Final Thoughts Sleepaway Camp is a very fun B movie It's focus on using transgender and homosexual themes in a traditional slasher film make it stand out among a crowded field of Friday the 13th wannabes.
