Always Be Learning “Success leaves clues.” The first time I heard that statement was from Dr. Johnathan Kraus in Episode 27.   Then David Jasse made the same point in Episode 59.    I thought I'd better sit up and pay attention.   Learning Is Vital, But We Can't Stay There We can't get stuck in learning mode alone. We also need to take ACTION. This is a big part of the Fast Track to Grant Writer VIP Program. Sure, we have plenty of supportive community and accountability, but the lessons are strategically designed for those who are ready to take serious action.   After going through the first few modules, the Fast Track to Grant Writer students are taking action - having conversations with prospective clients, setting up meetings, and figuring out their services. They already have a solid understanding of what types of services they can offer nonprofits - plus a group to support them and share ideas.   They've learned the importance of both learning AND action. 2021 Nonprofit Book Roundup  I enjoy learning from others too; that's why I always ask my guests to share a resource that's been especially helpful to them.     Here we go - the latest book roundup for 2021:   Asking: A 59-Minute Guide to Everything Board Members, Volunteers, and Staff Must Know to Secure the Gift - Jerold Panas  Dr. Jonathan Kraus (Ep 27) When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself - Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert  Rodney Olsen (Ep 48) The Ambassador's Journey: A Parable about Nonprofit Board Leadership - by Brian Brandt and Ashley Kutach  Brian Brandt (Ep 57) The Go-Giver - by John David Mann & Bob Burg  Alesha Mathis (Ep 67) I HAVE MY 501(C)3! Inoffensive in every region of the world Special thanks to Thaj for sharing "Audio for Podcasting: Episode 2 - Equalization" (HPR3345 - http://hackerpublicradio.org/eps.php?id=3345 ). I will be trying to apply some of his advice in this recording. In case you have not heard my previous episodes, this introduction may be helpful. If you have already listened to my previous 3 episodes, I apologize for this sounding redundant. Why am I recording this series? As I reviewed the HPR List of Recommended Topics, "What podcasts you listen to" jumped off the screen at me. I am passionate about information security We desperately need people to fill infosec jobs in many different specialties, including Security operations, engineering, & architecture Governance Risk, & Compliance Application Security Security Education More... Infosec is a rapidly changing field, and it is critical to stay current As a result I listen to TONS of infosec related podcasts Because there are so many podcasts to list, I have broken them down into 6 different episodes based on topics: Part 1 - News & Current Events Part 2 - General Information Security Part 3 - Career & Personal Development Part 4 - Social Engineering Part 5 - Hacks & Attacks Technical Information & Learning Infosec Community / Social / History Part 6 - Infosec Leadership Part 4 Social Engineering Note: Social Engineering has a special place in my heart. In a previous life, I developed and ran the security awareness program for a large organization. I based the program on many of the threats we experienced on a daily basis, and the challenges users encountered, and sometimes fell for. As a result, much of the material addressed detecting and reporting social engineering attacks. Hacking Humans - Dave Bittner & Joe Kerrigan – Sponsored by Know B4 (Weekly) A weekly podcast about social engineering https://thecyberwire.com/podcasts/hacking-humans.html The Social Engineer Podcast - Chris Hadnagy & social-engineer.org (Was Monthly, increasing frequency) A deep dive into the science, psychology, and application of social engineering Chris also runs the Social engineering Village at Defcon. 열정적인 사람들| The One with Naga Subramanya: Strictly Podfessional – On Passion, Purpose, and Podcasting: Episode 35 (2019)Naga Subramanya, who is Indian and lives in Bangalore, is one of the guys trying to do great things in the world. You only have to hear his story to see his passion for living and purpose. And speaking of passion, he began a podcast with that same title - Passion People Podcast – while couch-surfing during a gap year he took three years ago. As a Nigerian, the concept of taking a gap year (except the JAMB-enforced kind) is as alien to me as adopting a vegan cat. And I think my fellow Indians might agree with me on this one. But hear from Naga, who did just that in 2016.We also explored Naga's childhood, the peculiarity and opportunities of dating in India, given the caste system and the increasing adoption of technology and dating apps. How he waited two years to ask his wife out and another nine years before he could finally get to marry her. So I made him leave, Krithika, his dear wife, a love note in his native tongue. Finally, Naga and I talked about his concept of self-love and body image.

Many podcasters love to boost their network by doing an interview show, but maybe you're having a hard time finding guests. Sign up at PodcastGuests.com/sop  Who is Jordan Harbinger? 4:08 He is the host of the Jordan Harbinger show. He is a podcast veteran (been around more than 11 years) and I like Jordan because of the "three I's" Interesting A former Wall Street attorney, Jordan speaks five languages and spent several years abroad in Europe and the developing world, including South America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. He has also worked for various governments and NGOs overseas, traveled through war zones, and been kidnapped -- twice. He'll tell you the only reason he's still alive and kicking is because of his ability to talk his way into (and out of) just about any type of situation. Integrity Jordan will call BS on anybody. I once saw him correct a person who was introducing him at an event, and I've heard him ask some tough questions on his podcast The Jordan Harbinger Show Influence At Social Media Marketing World I saw Jordan speak (I HIGHLY recommend seeing him if you get a chance) and when he got done and greeting some people (like most people do) about 90% of the room followed him into the hall. I don't see this with other speakers. I originally interviewed Jordan back in 2014 when things were going great (he had his podcast and was also on Satelite radio) fast forward to 2018, and Jordan was removed from a podcast he co-founded. What impressed me the most when I met Jordan in San Diego was his attitude. He was looking at the bright side. Instead of "why did this happen to me?" he had a "What does this all me to do differently that I couldn't do before" attitude. He is a guy that puts in the work, and when the rug was pulled out from under him, it was his network of friends that he had built for 11 years that have come to help the world know he is back and better than ever at www.jordanharbinger.com and Advanced Human Dynamics In this episode we learn: 6:38 What happened - a deeper explanation. 8:55 An example of how his old brand was holding him back 11:08 How his new events will differ from the past 12:16 Who his target audience is for the events 14:24How he handles tough questions from his audience 16:35 Why its worth "Doing the work." 19:45 How he finds the time to do all his research. 22:08 How did he find out he was fired? 24:16 How his wife and listeners helped him cope with the situation. 25:25 What's the difference between the "old" and "new" Jordan Harbinger? 26:45 How do you balancing work/life/wife? 28:33 How do you avoid this scenario in the future for new podcasters? 35:10 Do you consider your podcast topic broad or niche? 36:35 How do I attend your event? For more information about Jordan check out www.jordanharbinger.com and Advanced Human Dynamics or email Jordan at jodran@jordanharbinger.com Check out his show in Apple Podcasts or on Castbox on Android (other options available at his website) Grading Your Own Interview 37:58 As my background is in training (20 years as a corporate trainer). Here is an exercise you can do to grade your interview. Go back and write down all the questions you asked (see above). Your podcast will help you land guests, and those guests can then point people to your website. Your website then becomes an audio business card that can capture people's attention. This is what the VR Workforce Studio Podcast Does. Here is a note from Rick Sizemore on how he got a big guest, who then got his podcast in front of a big audience. We are all excited here in Virginia because the NRA is holding their fall conference here in Richmond. No not the gun NRA but the National Rehabilitation Association. We have been working with noted Rehabilitation Professional, Sam Rothrock, who is going to be at the conference talking about how social media and particularly podcasting is becoming a powerful tool in workforce development and disability employment. He asked us where he could get some data on podcasting so we were quick to point him to the School of Podcasting Episode 452 with all those wonderful stats and the show notes filled with all the data we podcasters low to talk about. So while this is going on we got a call from Scott Dunnell with the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification which happens to be the worlds largest organization certifying rehabilitation professionals and counselors. We were able to get Scott on the VR workforce studio podcast alongside our Big Inspiration Showcase with Brian Evans. Brian, an executive with Bank of America, tells the story of his near death motorcycle accident, his recovery and returning to work at the bank through assistive technology and voc rehab. This gave Scott the perfect opportunity to reflect on an inspiring rehab counseling story and to discuss CRCC's launch of their new e university. CRCC posted the episode on their website and its getting lots of downloads from their membership, many of whom will be at NRA along with CRCC. So because of our podcast, many of the attendees will have heard about the VR Workforce Studio Podcast from a major conference exhibitor who will be just across the hall from a presentation where clips from our podcast will be part of the discussion on how podcasting can help people with disabilities, professionals and employers who are concerned with disability employment and vocational rehabilitation. So through one episode we have become involved in a major conference with attendees before they arrive will be part of promoting a major exhibitors products and support on of the key presentations. My Old Mixer Died so I Bought a New One [2:30] I purchased a Behringer Mixer when the old one died. I used Same Day Music. which allows me to split the price over two payments Test Driving Blog talk Radio Today [7:00] They have a new HD version of their service and they are letting me use it. I have not been a fan in the past, but they have upgraded their service and they asked me if I wanted to play with it Video Podcasting [10:45] Tim wants to know my thoughts on HipCast. He is doing an hour long video file. Dave would recommend doing a small format and make that available via RSS feed (itunes). Then put the HD video on Youtube. Jim uses Handbrake to change to different formats. Rob Walch from Libsyn stated you can create a 640X480 or 640X360 Hipchat has some interesting features. Dave talked more about this in the School of Podcasting Episode after he had a chance to play with them. Dave was trying Media Fire for video streaming and they seemed to kind of load (buffer) the video. Dave used Vimeo for the School of Podcasting video tutorials. Dave goes to the resources on computertutorflorida.com for downloading youtube. Testing the Phone System - Why Do I need an RSS Feed On My Website[29:00] The RSS feed is what carries all the information about your episodes so when people "point" (subscribe) to your show when you put out a new feed it is automatically delivered to you. Because not everyone uses iPhones, etc having an RSS feed on your website will help increase subscriptions. I do have a step by step tutorial at the School of Podcasting that walks you through this process. You can make a temporary post and upload an image, then attach a link to that button. Go to the html view and copy that code and paste it into a text widget in Wordpress. Check out subscribeandfollow.com for cool icons as well.   Time Releasing Your Podcast [43:08] You can schedule podcasts to be released in the future. If you are using the Powerpress feed you can copy and paste your mp3 into the proper aras and the post date it. If you use Libsyn.com for you need to post date both your website and libsyn so their feed isn't updated until the date you want. How Much Do I Charge for Podcast Consulting [47:55] This is all over the place. Some people from overseas charge $20 an hour. Others charge $400 an hour. Some people will charge $500 a month for four shows and that includes cutting out ums and ya knows, and you type up the show notes. Dave uses Harvest App to charge for one on one consulting. Jim charges around $75 an episode. You need to determine what you are doing. For example just stitching files together and tagging them is different than listening through the whole thing and cutting out ums and ya know (more time consuming). Audio editing is easy (if you like it), but you are trading time for money (which doesn't scale eventually). Many people use paypal. Harvest allows me to setup other items to accept payments (like stripe). If you can let them throw out the first number, see if you can make that happen. You have to determine what you time is worth. Dropbox is a valuable tool when doing audio editing.

We also get a "Power of podcating" story on how I heard about a book called Epic Content Marketing: How to Tell a Different Story, Break through the Clutter, and Win More Customers by Marketing Less that was recommended by fellow podcaster Jon Buscall of the Online Marketing and Communications podcast at jontusmedia.com Looking to Start a Podcast? - Join the School of Podcasting Come for the education, and stay for the community. You will get step by step tutorial about every aspect of podcasting. You get support from Dave Jackson as well as out awesome School of Podcasting community. Order worry free with our 30 day money back guarantee.   Because of a Podcast - I bought a Book I head Jon Buscall interview Joe Pulizi about his new book Epic Content Marketing: How to Tell a Different Story, Break through the Clutter, and Win More Customers by Marketing Less. Jon said that he liked the book so much that when he got done listening to it, he instantly went back and listened a second time. This made me stop what I was doing, and order the book on Audible immediately. (You can get a free book by signing up for a trial at www.audibletrial.com/dave if you don't like the book you can exchange it for another one).  I look at Jon as a trusted friend. So what happened here. Jon got a content expert on his show. Jon made what Michael Hyatt calls "Wow" content. Jon looks great. I tell you about this great interview and book. I help you find great content. You are grateful. Joe the author, Jon the interviewer, Dave the podcaster, all benefit as do you the listener. Why? because it is quality content. Because of episode after episode that Jon has produced. Trust is built. That trust can be leverage for monetary gain as long as you always protect your listener. It is always about them (not you). How to Use Audible as A Sponsor One you have 10 episodes on your website (as they are looking for serious podcasters) go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/audible and you can promote audio books on your website and earn a commission when someone signs up. What Podcasters Can Learn From Television Morning Programs Today we talk with Joe Saul-Sehy about the book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV about what podcasters can learn from television. Joe was on the morning television show before Good Morning America. Joe asks podcasters to think about the setup of the show to match their audience. Chemistry is discussed in this book on how Good Morning America beat the today show after they had been #1 for 16 years. People really connect with the hosts. Joe and his co-host O.G. and their relationship. You hear how Joe and O.G. had their podcast through a few different formats and name - they didn't quit. Joe prefers to get to the point and makes thing "snappy" on the Stacking Benjamins Show People want to be entertained while they are consuming content about the topic they came to learn about. The Today show got "cocky" while Good Morning America started asking the questions the audience wanted to ask. CBS has been growing faster by any other network by ignoring what the other networks are doing and doing what they want to do (longer interviews, no weather person). They are doing their own thing. You can out Good Morning America the actual Good Morning America. In the same way, you can't John Lee Dumis the actual John Lee Dumis. He will always better better and being John than you are. Instead focus on being you. If you have a big guest on your show, go listen to other interviews of that person and make sure to ask different questions. Don't be afraid to ask for bigger guests once you have some interviews under your belt. This can lead to publicists helping you find guests. Today Dave and Jim answer a slew of questions from the phone line and chat room. Join us every Saturday Morning at 10:30 AM at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/live.  Ask the Podcast Coach is Now in iTunes If you haven't already, subscribe to Ask the Podcast coach in iTunes, please do so and never miss another episode. We are also available in Stitcher. How Do You Isolate Tracks in Audacity While Recording? 6:00 Michael Kicking Bear Johnson of www.singlefeathermedia.com One way to do this is to use a USB mixing console like Alesis MultiMix 8 USB FX which goes for about $139. Where this mixer differs from others in the lineup is in its USB 2.0 technology. This enables you to send 10 channels (8 input channels plus the 2-Track input) individually to the computer, at up to 24-bit, 96 kHz resolution. Because each channel is sent individually, you can use virtually any DAW or other music software for mixing and editing the incoming audio. Jim notes that this is the mixer he uses and it only shows one channel coming into Audacity. Potentially more complex software like Garageband, or Logic, might be able to identify the mixer channels coming from the mixer. Growing Your Audience You want to grow your audience, and one way to do this is to put your website on everything. Dustin from Www.definingmomentstv.com asked about iTunes stats vs libsyn.com stats. iTunes does not furnish stats to podcasters in regards to the number of downloads or the number of subscribers. It is a directory of podcasts (think of it like a phone book). If you are using a media host like Libsyn.com or Blubrry.com when someone listens on a website, phone, tablet, your media host will track your download. It tunes (if it tracks downloads) does not share this information with the public).  One thing you can do is make it easy to play your podcast. You can find one if you have a blubrry.com account (even if you're not using them as a host). Another one is at player.podtrac.com which is what I use on my Podcast Review Show website. How Do I Know My Downloads Are People 18:20 Chris Drake from the Nocturnal Podcast while everyone that downloads a podcast may not listen to it. In general there is no "spam" in podcasting. People are choosing to consume your podcast because they want it (and if they don't its easy to unsubscribe). The only way to see how long people are listening is through your stitcher stats. They are reporting that the average completion rate is 48%. You can sign up for stitcher, but going to stitcher.com and using the Partner Signup link at the bottom of the page. Getting Rid of Echoes on Skype 22:20 George Jackson from www.scifisuperfriends.com asked about solutions for when your guest is hearing themselves echo back to them on a skype call. There are a few things to check 1. Make sure that everyone is wearing headphones to avoid voices bleeding into the microphone. 2. In Skype make sure that the input for the microphone is just listening to your microphone (and not the "stereo mix"). Something else you can do is get your guest on the line before the actual event. Do a precall. Jim as a checklist at http://theAverageguy.tv/guest  (32:00) In some cases Jim will actually ship them out an Audio Technica 2100 microphone (as they are plug and play on both Mac or PC) and they are only $40  (it costs $10-15 to ship). It's a great sounding microphone. In some cases its easier to ship it straight from Amazon to the guest. It would be free shipping if you had an Amazon Prime. Stitcher Updates You can now edit what stitcher is using for your RSS feed. COOL. You can also enter your twitter handle if someone shares your show via twitter via their app, you will be notified.  Dave Is Liking Stitcher as a Podcast Consumption I love the Stitcher App, and I love that you can listen through your browser. When I'm on my PC, I wanted to speed up the playback (a feature you can do on the app). It turns out if you press the numbers on your keyboard you can speed up as fast as 3X!  Tips For Editing While you can record a show and just let go, if you plan on doing some editing here is a tip. When you make a mistake while recording, look at your watch and wait 10 seconds. This will make it OBVIOUS where the edit is when you go in later to take it out. You can also speed Audacity (I spoke about this in a previous School of Podcasting Episode where I talk about speeding up your editing time by 70%). I also use Sony Sound Forge (which allows me to speed up while I listen). Sony Sound Forge is around $45.  Also if you are recording into a portable recorder, don't forget you have a pause button.  One other way to reduce the need for editing is by doing better show prep. Jim mentions that don't go crazy with show prep. There are times when you have to just press record.  Mentioned In This Show On an episode of the Feed, Libsyn has created an app for Windows phones call the Source.  Podcast Directoy of directories at podcast411.com The Chat Room had a discussion about Jim's Theme on his website which you can find HERE
