POPULARITY
From 2013 John DiMaggio (Bender) joins us to talk about his career as one of the top voice over actors in the business. From his work on Futurama, Batman Brave And The Bold, Adventure Time and his excellent documentary I KNOW THAT VOICE.
This week, we're headed to Harvard Law (what, like it's hard?) as J Mo cashes in a recent thrift store pick-up so we'd have something light and breezy to discuss in the wake of recent events. It's 2001's Legally Blonde, directed by Robert Luketic, and starring Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Victor Garber, Holland Taylor, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Larter, Osgood Perkins, Raquel Welch and Linda Cardellini. A box office hit that spawned a sequel, a broadway musical (with accompanying talent search reality show), and apparently a forthcoming prequel TV series, and launched its charming lead as a certified household name Movie Star after winning turns in Pleasantville and Election. Plus: both hosts have been to the theatre this week, and have field trips to report on for Conclave and Heretic. And we go deep into overtime after the end credits with a littany of thoughts on the first trailer for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, Legally Blonde is currently streaming for free on Tubi in Canada at the time of publication, and is also available via MGM. Other works referenced in this episode include The Saint, I Saw The TV Glow, The Transporter, I Know That Voice, Casa Bonita, Mi Amor!, Martha, Shawshank Redemption, My Old Ass, The Fallout, The Fog, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, A Perfect Circle's album Mer de Noms, cable TV, Longlegs, X-Men, Walk The Line, Walk Hard, Animal House, Cruel Intentions, The Time Machine, Olympus Has Fallen, It's Complicated, American Pie, Barbie, the entire Mission: Impossible series, No Time To Die, The Dark Knight Rises, North by Northwest, Interstellar, The Fast and the Furious franchise, and John Wick among others. We'll be back next week as we've lined up the No-theme-ber schedule to coincide with the release of one of the last anticipated major release of the year. No, not Wicked. We're circling back to 2000's eventual Best Picture winner, Ridley Scott's Gladiator with Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, which can be found streaming north of the border currently on Netflix and Paramount+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!! Hamburger.

"Bow to your masters, dirty criminal scum! Bow to your masters!" We here at Disenfranchised are saddened by the loss of the great Kevin Conroy... almost as saddened as we are the Batman: Mask of the Phantasm had a direct-to-video sequel (making it ineligible for us to cover). Instead, we're forced to take on a movie we'd all but forgotten existed, but one that allows us to chat about Kevin Smith, his View Askew-niverse, and eulogize the late Conroy. Where does this film rank amongst the other Askew-niverse films? How has pot affected Smith's filmmaking? Can any other Batman actor even compete with Conroy in terms of overall supremacy? Listen in as we tackle all these subjects and so many more! Hey, I Know That Voice!, Kidd's Kids Is Returning To Disney World, And Beat The Bank: Money Heist
New episode out now! He is vengeance. He is the night. He’s Batman! We have our first encounter with the Dark Knight in 1993’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and listeners, Mack is excited. Seriously, he’s like a Batman encyclopedia! We learn about the origins of the animated series that gave way to the film, discuss the iconic and game-changing animation style that only half of us noticed, and rave over the brilliant voice acting by Kevin Conroy and the Joker himself, Mark Hamill. We discuss different iterations of both Batman and the Joker and judge how the animated series stacked up. (Spoiler alert: Hamill may be the best one?) We also really enjoy how sassy Alfred is, think that Andrea calling out Bruce Wayne’s self-destructing tortured-man tendencies is very refreshing, critique Batman's detective work, and wonder why Gotham has so many dilapidated warehouses and amusement parks but somehow the municipal government has high rise offices. Katy shares a Girl Scout camp story, Carrie appreciates a good voice note recorder, Maddy comes up with a new tagline, and Mack just—really knows a lot about Batman. We also collectively share a surprising knowledge about various world’s fairs, learn that cartoon code for “we had sex” is one person wearing the other's shirt while thinking on a balcony, and we all try out a voice acting technique by imitating our favorite cartoon laughs. And don't worry - there’s also plenty of Batman impressions. Starting literally 60 seconds in. Enjoy! Show Corrections/Notes: Katy fully meant Ghost of Christmas Future and not Ghost of Future Past. No idea what happened there. I Know That Voice trailer Saxophone magic: The credits song I Never Even Told You by Shirley Walker, the SNL Sergio digital short, Tim Cappello I Still Believe from The Lost Boys music video College Humor - Pete Holmes as Batman Compilation This is the video Maddy referenced that she used to quote all the time: Batman’s Night Out

The Fellowship is pleased to present our discussion of Skottie Young's awesome series I Hate Fairyland. Spoilers fly in this one, starting with how much we collectively love this book. We talk about Skottie's art, the birth of this story, the inherent weirdness of it, how we think it qualifies as a horror story, and a bunch of stuff in between. Plus our usual tangents galore and our comics picks of the week. Announcements: Come hang out with us! The Fellowship is pleased to present our discussion of summer movies. But since we can't be sure that we'll have movies this summer, we took it back to the summer movies of 1985. The 1980s was a decade of highs and lows, in movies or otherwise, and '85 had some major hits and some major misses. We talk a whole lot about the ones we liked, as much as we dare about the ones we didn't, and a bunch of stuff in between. Plus our usual tangents galore and our comics picks of the week. We delve into the world of Voice Acting with a look at the newest adaptation of the Jungle Book. It was so much better that we expected it to be because the voice acting made the characters come alive. But we don't stop there, we thought that it would be fun to watch the documentary, I Know That Voice, on Netflix. It really pulls back the curtain on the voice acting industry and let us not only match faces with voices but we get to see all the hard work that goes into this craft that tends to be taken for granted. Finally, we discuss some of our favorite all time vocal performances. So sit back, relax, and let us do all the talking...Thanks for listening! We want to hear from you! Y' know that voice in your head you recognize from somewhere that isn't your subconscious demanding you run over that bunch of baby ducks slowly crossing the road when you're already late for work? Voice actors are invisible and materialize here and there as the various characters to whom they give life. They are the Cyrano De Bergerac's within the sea of Hollywood fish who every now and then gulp up the sprinkles of recognition from their holy than thou counterparts. For this discussion, we referenced the documentary "I Know That Voice" -- now on Netflix-- to help us with the ingredients to fulfill this order. First Impressions JAC discusses their initial reactions to the documentary I Know That Voice. Legendary actor and Mel Blanc, the best of the best, and that great looney tunes episode Rabbit Season, Duck Season. He played both Bugs and Daffy attempted to outwit himself in an epic debate to convince Elmer which animal is in season. Actor vs Actors A-list Hollywood actors get paid millions to voice characters in blockbuster-animated movies and quite often only play themselves and not the character. We talk about the good, the paid, and the overpaid. 1. Shrek Eddie Murphy as Donkey as Eddie Murphy. Mikey Myers as Shrek is a good fit. Justin Timberlake as The Prince convincing us all he is just that good. Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona is always enjoyable to watch. I guess it is easy being green. 2. Madagascar Chris Rock as Marty as Chris Rock. C'mon, what'd you expect? Schwimmer as Melman Mankiewicz as Ross. Jada as Gloria is 300 lbs heavier and less serious than normally depicted. Ben Stiller as Marty as Ben Stiller as every other character he ever played - oh, yeah, himself. Gaming Nowadays when storylines are almost as imperative to gameplay, voice actors are in high demand to portray characters with intense emotion and awesome dialog. To do the job right means to sometime sacrifice the very thing that is your bread and butter: your voice. Anime Dubbing is tricky. To best to sync dialog to the mouth of a character is to animate a character to the dialog. With anime, this process is done after the fact and can yield good or bad results. It'll never be perfect but effective enough to not distract the viewer too much. Watch the documentary, I Know That Voice We're always open for suggestions and/or a favorable comment @talkingburritos on your favorite social app. But Machete don't tweet. Having finally gotten to see Gone Girl, Sam is on a Gillian Flynn kick, reading Sharp Objects and Dark Places. Class Z(ed): Last week, we attended a talk given by Michael Vonn of the BC Civil Liberties Association regarding a change of policy in VPL's Internet Use Policy that prohibits the viewing of "sexually explicit materials" on library workstations. While they have some good explanations, we discuss our own opinions (and certainly not those of our employers) why the problems with this policy may run deeper than they look.
