Erica and Scott welcome Ryan and Malorie Laukat, the couple behind Red Raven Games. Ryan is known as the designer and illustrator for games like Eight Minute Empire, Above and Below, Near and Far, Islebound, Empires of the Void, Artifacts Inc., Megaland, and the forthcoming Now or Never. They are also the subject of an upcoming documentary, Crafting Arzium. Ryan is often seen as the sole force behind Red Raven Games, but Malorie and the whole Laukat family do a lot of work behind the scenes. We talk about the challenges and opportunities of making games as a family, how to maintain a work/life balance, and how to get your kids to playtest your latest game. SHOW NOTES 27m32s: Tales of the Arabian Nights 38m59s: We discussed the different markets you can sell your game in on Ludology 246 - Cornering the Market. 51m14s: You can hear the Laukats' original music in their Sleeping Gods Kickstarter trailer. 1h07m24s: Here's the Red Raven website, their Twitter, their Facebook, and their Instagram.
I remember my first love. She was always the life of the party, constantly kept me guessing, and had more tuck boxes than you could shake a stick at. Today we return to Gloomhaven with Jaws of the Lion. It's the same beast in a smaller box. We take a very deep look at what makes this game stand out and whether it holds up to its very significant weight. How does it land with players new to Gloomhaven? Will it inspire the same love in veteran players of the big box? We also discuss board game mechanisms that are criminally underused. Mechanisms that deliver such wonderful tensions that you have to wonder why we don't see more of them. Seriously if I don't see a closed economy auction in one more boardgame then somebody's going to jail. On another note, we are considering renaming our podcast to something that better fits our analytical and critical banter. In the ancient Norse lands, we pillage the coasts, whale the seas, craft hammers and mail, and play tetris on the front lawn of the meade hall. Wait, what? We're talking about A Feast for Odin, Uwe Rosenberg's magnum opus. We run through the best parts of of this game and where it fails. We played it 10 times in two weeks -- King Hrothgar would be proud. Then we talk the Norwegians expansion, which goes down like a smooth glass of meade after the looser plays of vanilla Feast. Guess what though -- the game is basically a patch, and a very good one.Not too far removed, our topic of the day is the multiplicative effect that spatial elements have on tired board game mechanics. Whether it's the lovely tile placement of Feast, the opportunistic avatar map movements of Marco Polo, or the tension of Escape Plan that has a bit of both, spatial elements make some of our favorite games.03:20 A Feast for Odin Review - At Least Ten Times20:35 The Norwegians Expansion - A Review33:26 The Multiplicative Experience of Spatial Elements in Games - Feature Theme34:00 Voyages of Marco Polo34:29 Islebound and Vindication35:18 Tyrants of the Underdark36:00 Supermotherload37:13 Clank41:18 Escape Plan overview -- a Combo of Tile Placement and Avatar Movement46:17 Forum Trajanum49:27 Seafall51:15 Riverboat52:02 Grimslingers

In this episode of Quick Looks from The Long View, Elhannan Lloyd Keller and I discuss two new titles. First up from Stronghold Games is City of Spies: Estoril 1942. Is this spy vs. spy bluffing game a sneaky hit, or a Mad Magazine inspired bomb? Listen to hear our impressions of this new title. Finally, we review Islebound from Red Raven Games. Is this the best of Laukat? Does a game need to be revolutionary in design to be great? Check out our impressions of this interesting new title. Thanks, as always, to our sponsor www.gamesurplus.com for their continued support of The Long View and Quick Looks. Go and find out why they should be your first destination for online boardgame purchases!
