Nestled in the heart of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the ancient city of Chichén Itza stands as a majestic testament to the architectural ingenuity and cultural richness of the ancient Maya civilization. It's long been regarded as a shining example of Maya influence, yet today, many experts agree it's not typically Maya at all, but rather a reflection of a shifting, adapting civilisation.  So how did the city become such an important hub to a dominant Mesoamerican superpower? What were the cultural and political dynamics that shaped its unique evolution? And why was it so suddenly abandoned, and left to be reclaimed by the jungle?  This is a Short History Of Chichen Itza.

The Guatemalan island of Flores, once known as Nojpetén, witnessed the final clash between Spanish conquistadors and the last independent Maya kingdom on March 13th, 1697.  The Itza warriors, equipped with ornate spears and swords, fought valiantly to defend their homeland; but Spanish firepower ultimately overwhelmed them, leading to heavy casualties and the retreat of many defenders.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the fall of Nojpetén marked the end of an era for the Maya people, but not their actual end; consider how foreign diseases like smallpox and typhoid were imported by the Spanish; and reveal how many languages still spoken today stem from this ancient civilisation…  Further Reading: ‘Who were the Maya? Young kids growing up in Guatemala often learn Q'anjob'al, Kaq'chikel, or another Mayan language from their families and communities. But they don't live next to the kinds of major research universities that do most of the academic studies about how kids learn languages. Figuring out what these kids are doing is part of a bigger push to learn more about language learning in a broader variety of sociocultural settings. In this episode, your host Gretchen McCulloch gets enthusiastic about how kids learn Q'anjob'al and other Mayan languages with Dr. Pedro Mateo Pedro, who's an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, Canada, a native speaker of Q'anjob'al and a learner of Kaq'chikel. We talk about Pedro's background teaching school in Q'anjob'al and Spanish, which sounds kids acquire later in Q'anjob'al (hint: it's the ejectives like q' and b'), and gender differences in how kids speak Q'anjob'al. We also talk more broadly about why this work is important, both in terms of understanding how language acquisition works as a whole and in terms of using the knowledge of how children acquire Indigenous languages to create teaching materials specific to those languages. Finally, we talk about Pedro's newer revitalization work with a community of Itza' speakers and the process of building a relationship with a community that you're not already part of. Welcome back to episode 23 of the BookTok Book Club Podcast. Today we are talking about This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno with Evan Nikolaus @evan_nikolaus We loved getting to know Evan and learning a little bit more about how he fell in love with books. His love for books started when his father got him a monthly subscription for Scooby doo books when he was young. However, he lost interest in reading when other kids made fun of him for it. That is, until the Hunger Games series came out. He was immediately hooked, and he has been reading voraciously ever since. And of course, we always get excited about new books. Join us today as we discuss This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno. This Thing Between Us is a A bold, original horror novel about grief, loneliness and the oppressive intimacy of technology.  It was Vera's idea to buy the Itza. The "world's most advanced smart speaker!" didn't interest Thiago, but Vera thought it would be a bit of fun for them amidst all the strange occurrences happening in the condo. It made things worse. The cold spots and scratching in the walls were weird enough, but peculiar packages started showing up at the house—who ordered industrial lye? Then there was the eerie music at odd hours, Thiago waking up to Itza projecting light shows in an empty room. It was funny and strange right up until Vera was killed, and Thiago's world became unbearable. Pundits and politicians all looking to turn his wife's death into a symbol for their own agendas. A barrage of texts from her well-meaning friends about letting go and moving on. Waking to the sound of Itza talking softly to someone in the living room... The only thing left to do was get far away from Chicago. Away from everything and everyone. A secluded cabin in Colorado seemed like the perfect place to hole up with his crushing grief. But soon Thiago realizes there is no escape—not from his guilt, not from his simmering rage, and not from the evil hunting him, feeding on his grief, determined to make its way into this world. Mark Carlotto asks what if ancient sites such as Machu Picchu, Chichen Itza, the Acropolis, and Temple Mount are not only thousands of years old but much older? Until recently, a lack of hard evidence has led mainstream archaeologists to dismiss theories of past civilizations as pseudoscientific attempts to resurrect ancient myths and legends. However, new archaeological discoveries are beginning to challenge conventional explanations. Inspired by Charles Hapgood's hypothesis that the ice ages were the result of shifts in the geographic location of Earth's poles, independent researcher and author Mark Carlotto has discovered that numerous sites throughout the world are aligned to what appear to have been four previous positions of the North Pole over the past 100,000 years.
