Send us a textJon sends Aemon, Gilly, Sam, and the wrong baby away from the Wall. He appoints Night's Watch brothers to rebuild and command castles along the Wall. Janos Slynt refuses and Jon levies a stiff punishment in response. Stannis approves. Simon and Mackelly admire Jon's transformation - from boy to man.Chapter Review:Jon has met with Maester Aemon, who provided the same advice he once gave to his brother Egg: Kill the boy so that the man may be born. Time to grow up. Jon puts this into practice when he meets with Gilly and explains what she must do to save Dalla's baby - give up her own. She agrees under considerable duress.Next, he meets with Sam who must go to Oldtown and become a maester. Sam is flustered, a Tarly cannot wear a chain of servitude, and he cannot learn to heal because he's scared of blood. Jon reminds him that he's a brother of the Night's Watch, and while he cannot order him to be brave, he can order him to hide his fears. He will go and he'll earn his chain.Lastly, Jon commissions Bedwyck to refit and take command of the abandoned way-castle at Icemark. He'll command 30 men. Bedwyck's a seasoned ranger and Jon knows he'll prove more than capable. He gives Janos Slynt the same opportunity at Greyguard. Slynt refuses. Jon gives him a chance to back down but the oaf won't listen. When Jon calls for his seizure and execution Slynt's friends melt away. Sam and the men vying for Lord Commander of the Night's Watch attend an audience with King Stannis. Stannis wants a Lord Commander chosen tonight. Simon and Mackelly pick up what he's putting down.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly assists Maester Aemon to a summons by King Stannis Baratheon. They are accompanied by the current vote-getters for Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. King Stannis has had enough of waiting for the brothers to agree on a leader. He wants this wrapped up today. When Janos Slynt suggests King Stannis offer guidance to the brothers, Stannis says anybody but Janos should suffice.King Stannis has other needs from the Night's Watch, and the Lord Commander should have a say in the matter. He wants the Gift and the abandoned castles. The brothers don't take this news well. Stannis says he needs to rebuild the castles to garrison a force to stop the Others' attack. Before leaving, Maester Aemon asks to “see” Lightbringer. Sam describes the beautifully glowing sword to the blind maester. Afterward, Aemon finds it odd the sword gave off no heat. Later, Sam hatches a plan to stop Slynt from being voted Lord Commander. He asks Cotter Pyke to back Ser Deny Mallister. Pyke has no interest. Sam asks Ser Denys to back Pyke. Again, no interest. Sam suggests a different candidate. To Ser Denys he touts the mystery brother as well-educated, from old blood, castle trained, and highly trusted. To Pyke he describes the man as a good fighter but a bastard. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Jon is summoned by King Stannis. The king offers Jon his dream come true; the title of Lord Stark of Winterfell. Stannis also plans to let the wildlings through the Wall, if they bend the knee. Jon agrees with the wildling plan but needs time to think about being legitimized and made lord of Winterfell. Simon and Mackelly consider shopping for castle-warming gifts.Chapter Review:Jon Snow spars in the yard of Castle Black with Satin. Melisandre interrupts; King Stannis wants a word with Jon. Stannis tells Jon he's heard much about him. Jon confirms some facts and dispels some rumors. The bottom line is that he never turned his cloak. The king believes him. Stannis knows Janos Slynt and knew Ned Stark. Stannis reveals that he plans to let the wildlings through the Wall, as long as they bend the knee and take R'hllor as their true god. The king explains that he's here to fight the true enemy: the Great Other. They will need the wildling's help in that fight.Stannis then tells Jon the primary reason he sent for him. The king doesn't need another sword in the Night's Watch. He needs the North. There's no better way to rally the North than through a son of Eddard Stark. He plans to legitimize Jon, making him Jon Stark the Lord of Winterfell. It was a dream of Jon's when he was young, but he never wanted harm to come to his siblings. However, he's likely the last of them alive. But there's another issue: he's taken The Black. Melisandre says his vow is meaningless, since it wasn't said to R'hellor. The final detail of the plan is that Stannis wants to marry Jon to the wildling Val. Jon asks for time to consider the offer.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Member of the Night's Watch.Stannis Baratheon - Brother of dead King Robert, claims the Iron Throne because Cersei's children are not Robert's.Melisandre - Red Woman of Ashaii. Sam and Gilly have made to Castle Black. Gilly has taken on a second baby to feed. Sam has a crafty idea to ensure Gilly and son are cared for. Janos Slynt is making waves in the vote for Lord Commander. Mackelly and Simon consider voter fraud to keep Slynt out of the top spot.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly, Gilly, and Gilly's baby have finally made it to Castle Black. Gilly has begun feeding Mance and Dalla's newborn son. Dalla's sister Val has heard that Melasandre plans to burn Mance and asks that he be allowed to see his son first. Jon Snow says he'll ask.Later, Jon asks Sam about his feelings for Gilly. Sam says he knows there's no future for them but tells Jon of a plan to send Gilly and the baby to Sam's mother at Horn Hill. Sam will lie and say that the boy is his. Jon thinks it could work, but it depends on the type of man the boy grows up to be. It is killing Sam to keep a secret from Jon. Sam knows that Bran is alive but swore multiple times not to reveal it, and he holds true to his word. That night the men vote on a new Lord Commander. Nobody is close to the two-thirds vote necessary to win. Denys Mallister and Cotter Pyke are the front-runners but Janos Slynt continues to climb in the voting. Sam knows that if Mallister and Pyke could agree on only one of the men running, they'd be very close to having the numbers. Still no rest for the wicked. Jon and his Black Brothers continue to repel the wildlings. But reinforcements on this side of the Wall spell bad news for Jon. Simon and Mackelly share their fears.Chapter Review:Morale is running low for Jon Snow and his Night's Watch brothers, as they defend the gate against the wildlings. The handful of brothers eat, sleep, and fight on top of the Wall, while Mance Rayder can throw limitless fresh troops against them. Mance's latest twist is a huge rolling shelter that can shield many wildlings from attacks from above. The Black Brothers named the contraption “the turtle.” Jon has his men drop barrels of ice and rocks on the turtle and send the wildlings scurrying back to the safety of the forest.Jon then returns to his little chamber in the King's Tower for some much needed sleep. When he wakes, four unfamiliar men stand over him. They lead him to Ser Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt. Slynt says he's taken control of Castle Black and says Jon has been accused of treason, listing all of the things Jon did while with the wildlings. Jon defends himself and says he was doing as Qhorin Halfhand commanded, but it falls on deaf ears. Slynt decides that Jon will hang for his transgressions.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion wines, dines, and has his way with Lord Janos Slynt. He appoints a new head of the City Watch and rounds out his evening by verbally sparring with Lord Varys. Mackelly and Simon consider Tyrion's power moves and prospects. Chapter Review: Tyrion plies Janos Slynt, the new Lord of Harrenhal, with wine over a lavish dinner. The commander of the City Watch is quite drunk by the time Tyrion turns the tables and announces Slynt's new career as a member of the Night's Watch. The new head of the Gold Cloaks, Jacelyn Bywater, has his former boss escorted to a waiting ship and onward to the Wall. Lord Varys admires Tyrion's stratagems but the Hand is annoyed that the all-knowing Spider failed to protect baby Barra and her mother from murder at the hand of Slynt's brutal henchmen. Varys apologizes, but claims he did get Gendry out of the city when he saw what Cersei had planned for Robert's progeny. The men discuss Cersei's cruelty and the riddle of where power truly resides. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Tyrion disrupts the small council by announcing that he'll be the new Hand of the King. Cersei is not best pleased. Varys proves his ability to sniff out a secret by befriending Shae before Tyrion has had a chance to hide her. Mackelly and Simon join in the posturing about what real power is. PS: Stick around after the end music to hear Simon serenade Mac.Chapter Review: Tyrion gains entry to the small council by staring down Ser Mandon Moore (with a bit of help from Bronn and Timmet). He shows the council the letter from his father naming him Hand of the King. The various members of the council congratulate Tyrion, but the queen is far from pleased. A mood not improved when she learns he's brought only a token force, not the full army of the West that she was hoping for. Tyrion requests a moment alone with his sister. The flatterers and fools exeunt. They discuss Jaime's absence, Littlefinger's awful decision to elevate the incompetent Janos Slynt, Joffrey's awful decision to behead Ned Stark, Varys' awful decision to fire Ser Barristan Selmy, and Sansa's awful (for the Stark's) decision to betray her family. Tyrion gets the idea that the small council are useless and it's a good job he's here. He rides through the city, seeing causes for concern (more bodyguards than produce), and learns that Cersei is doing nothing to help the citizens. Arriving back at his lodgings he finds Shae entertaining Lord Varys. He's dismayed, as he hoped to keep her presence a secret. He and Varys joust over what constitutes true power. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon. King Joffrey Baratheon - Bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. Currently King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name. Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister. Acting Hand of the King. Tywin Lannister - Lord of Casterly Rock. Father of Jamie, Cersei, and Tyrion Lannister. Jamie Lannister - Member of the royal Kingsguard. Twin brother to Queen Cersei and older brother to Tyrion. Nicknamed the "Kingslayer" for killing King Aerys Targaryen. Captive of Robb Stark. Shae - Prostitute, consort of Tyrion Lannister. Lord Varys - The Spider. Eunuch and Master of Whispers. Member of the small council. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin. Member of the small council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Stark. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Sansa attends King Joffrey's first court session. It's everything she never dreamed of. Janos Slynt gets a meteoric promotion, Ser Barristan Selmy gets similarly precipitous demotion. And Sansa begs for her father's life. Despite a chorus of naysayers, good King Joffrey is moved to mercy. The boys cast a skeptical eye over the whole thing. Chapter Review: Sansa Stark enters the throne room and is treated as a leper by all. Even drunken Ser Dontos Hollard stifles his greeting when reminded of who she is. No matter, she's on a mission. Pycelle reads out a list of people who are expected to come to King's Landing to pledge fealty to the new King. It's pretty much everyone in Westeros. Arya is on the list - which gives Sansa hope that her sister might have escaped. Janos Slynt is given the Lordship of Harrenhal and a seat on the Small Council. Cersei is named regent. Tywin Lannister is named Hand of the King. Barristan Selmy is then unceremoniously fired from his role as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. He storms out muttering mutinous words about Stannis' claim to the throne. Sansa's moment arrives. She begs forgiveness for her father. She puts his lack of judgement down to the milk of the poppy he was taking for his broken leg. The Small Council advise the King to harden his heart, but King Joffrey claims to be moved by Sansa's sweet words. Provided that Lord Stark retracts his prior accusations and pledge fealty, there will be mercy. Characters/Places/Names/Events: King Joffrey Baratheon - bastard son of Jaime Lannister and his twin sister Queen Cersei Lannister. Currently King Joffrey Baratheon First of His Name. Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. Mother of King Joffrey Baratheon. Janos Slynt - Commander of the City Watch (AKA Gold Cloaks), the police force of King's Landing. Now elevated to Lord of Harrenhal and given a seat on the Small Council. Ser Barristan Selmy - Ousted Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Older but still deadly with a sword or a lance. Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish - Master of Coin, member of the Small Council, and childhood friend to Catelyn Tully. Grand Maester Pycelle - Elderly grand maester of the Seven Kingdoms. Fellow member of the king's Small Council. Lord Varys - The Spider. Eunuch and Master of Whispers. Sansa Stark - Eldest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Catelyn Tully. Betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon. Eddard "Ned" Stark - Former Hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and King Robert's closest friend. Support the podcast. Buy a bit of merch from our store. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week's episode of Game of Thrones may not have quite packed the same level of action that we've become used to, but “Kill the Boy” didn't disappoint in its character drama and we're ready to dive right into all of it. On this installment of The Cast Beyond the Wall, we're joined by special guests Dalton Stuart and Jessica Martin to discuss all of the latest developments in the north side of Westeros. We were all shocked by the passing of Ser Barristan after last week's cliffhanger and we try to decide whether or not showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss gave the understated fan favorite his due. In the fallout of his death, Daenerys makes a vengeful decision to begin burning the former slave owners alive. It may not be one of the most diplomatic solutions, but we chime in with our thoughts on how well her moves will play with the rest of Mereen. This season of Game of Thrones continues to give Stannis knock out moments and this week was no exception. The self-declared king continues to win us over with his respectable decisions and great one on one talks with all of our favorite characters. Before finally departing the wall, Stannis has a few last words with Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly. After decapitating the despicable Janos Slynt a couple of episodes back, Jon continues to make controversial moves in his role as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. We take a closer look at his polarizing decision to work with the wildlings and set the likes of Ollie against him. The family drama in Winterfell began to ramp up this week as well now that Sansa is starting to settle into her old home. After years of being apart, she is finally reunited with Theon and the results are truly twisted. There's certainly a lot to discuss this week and as always, we break it all down in our lengthy and in-depth discussion. High Sparrow was the most eventful Game of Thrones episode so far this season and The Cast Beyond the Wall is back to break down some of the most shocking moments. High Sparrow brought us one of Jon Snow's most character defining moments yet as he put Janos Slynt's head to on the chopping block. His first act as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch was undoubtedly a bold one we've been waiting to talk about. Is Jon laying down the law or planting the seeds of betrayal among his men? The north was chocked full of shocking twists, but none of them as surprising as Sansa's planned betrothal to known sociopath Ramsey Bolton. What does this mean for the last known Stark and Littlefinger's grand masterplan? Daniel, Austin, and I talk all of the possible moves and the brilliance of the strategy to take Westeros. In what seems like the first time in Game of Thrones history, the series featured a wedding going as planned. Margery has finally taken the claim to power in King's Landing and Cersei isn't taking it well. What exactly does her alliance with the High Sparrow mean in her plot to undermind Margery? This week was full of classic Game of Thrones moments and we've got each and every moment covered in our glorious pop culture filled discussion. It's been four years in the making, but the Wildlings have finally made it to the wall for one of the most epic battles in TV history. We apologize for the lateness, folks, but The Cast Beyond the Wall has arrived just in time to discuss this climactic and hugely polarizing episode of Game of Thrones! Austin, Daniel, and I are joined by a former professor and avid Thrones fan Mark Pickens to weigh in on whether or not there's any hope for Sam as the Thenns attack. This week's episode revs up the epic scope to an eleven as it tries to give the unforgettable “Blackwater” a run for its money as the most bombastic Game of Thrones episode yet! Swords will clash and blades will bleed as Mark and Austin argue Sam's newfound meaning and leadership while Daniel and I can't seem to agree on how well the battle ended. And all of us try to decide whether we cared enough about Ygritte to mourn her cheesy and anti-climatic death. Director Neil Marshall returns to the director's chair and brings his creativity and love of wWildling killing Night's Watch cooks along with him. Did I mention that there were also giants riding mammoths? Is this the best episode of the show yet? Is there any hope for Samwell Tarly? Most importantly, will Janos Slynt ever come out of the closet to confront the giants? Tune in and join us on this week's episode of The Cast Beyond the Wall to find out!
Do you like sweet corn? How about plushies that reference year-old memes? Well do I have a podcast for you! This week we cover the classic scene where Tyrion sends Janos Slynt off to the wall, and the very non-classic scene where some wolves watch Arya pee. I think you will be as riveted as we …

AFTERBUZZ TV – The Game of Thrones edition, is a weekly “after show” for fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Cersei rejects Robb Stark's terms and Tyrion exiles Janos Slynt, head of the Gold Cloaks, to the Wall, promoting Bronn to commander of the watch. On the road to the Wall, Arya reveals her true identity to Gendry. North of the Wall, Samwell Tarly is approached by one of Craster's daughters, Gilly, who is pregnant and fears for her unborn child; Jon is reluctant to help her despite Sam's pleas.
