A random discussion about past history and influences in music with one of my long-time personal friends that became an interview with someone who had firsthand involvement with what would become known as "West Coast Hip-Hop"; was there on the scene before it first began, and would take part in it. They're among those uncredited who had a part in an industry that had an effect on culture. If you viewed NFL Super Bowl 56, a number of the classic "West Coast Hip-Hop" references were apparent during the performance. A.J. speaks from experience as a session musician, arranger, keyboardist, concert tour member, his start as a performance DJ, and Business Manager for various acts including "Rodney O and Joe Cooley", as an integral/core member of Uncle Jamm's Army that experienced some firsts during this period, an A&R Executive/Talent Scout, and General Manager for Egyptian Empire Records, has worked alongside West Coast recording artist, innovator and legend of West Coast Hip-Hop/Freakbeat/Electro-Funk Egyptian Lover who's currently touring and has been for over 30 years, since the early 80s. It doesn't get better than this. 'A good reel would wipe the cobwebs off his heart.' Last Night's Fun and Joe Cooley, a -kick-you-in-the-chest-kind-of-accordion-player.' Looking for the ghosts of James Morrison and Michael Coleman on the streets of New York City. Translating the music of the fiddle into the language of the box. A grandmother's recordings a treasure trove for the aspiring Daithí Gormley and the chancey nature of recording in the studio. 'There's only one trick to becoming a great musician - you figure out what you're not able to do, and don't do it.' Finbarr Dwyer's advice to Daithí. Daithí's album with Catherine McHugh is ‘Fiddling without a Bow – Irish Traditional Music on Button Accordion' https://daithigormley.bandcamp.com/ And his book 'Fiddlers of Sligo Tunebook' compiled with Oisin Mac Diarmada, is available here: https://custysmusic.com/search?q=Daith%C3%AD+gormley&type=product The tunes Daithí plays: Last Night's Fun The Templehouse Reel and an unnamed reel, from the playing of Michael Joe and Larry MacDonagh The Spike Island Lasses and Farewell to Leitrim Tell Her I Am and Tatter Jack Walsh My Love is Fair and Handsome followed by The Maid of Mount Cisco (composed by Paddy Killoran) And finally - it's hard to do justice to Ciaran Carson's last collection of poems, which we mention during the chat, 'Still Life.' It's shot through with sorrow and love, and a savouring of the last of life. https://www.gallerypress.com/product/still-life/ Ciaran Carson also wrote what many regard as the best book on Irish music yet written, 'Last Night's Fun.' Which happens to be the name of the tune with which Daithí began todays episode, talking about the legendary Joe Cooley. Thank you, Daithí. -- If you'd like to check it out, this is Craig Ferguson's 2010 monologue on Brittney Spears and addiction that Darren mentions. Eric Thompson took up the guitar as a teenager in Palo Alto, California in the early 1960's, at a time when very few folk guitarists were playing more than basic rhythm guitar. Among his earliest bands were the Black Mountain Boys (with Jerry Garcia and David Nelson) and Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions. He quickly became nationally known as an exceptional lead flatpicker, winning the World Championship Cup at Union Grove, North Carolina with the New York Ramblers (which also included David Grisman and Winnie Winston) and flying to Nashville, Tennessee to record "Beatle Country" with the Charles River Valley Boys (reissued on Rounder). During the 1970's, Eric continued to play old-time music. He also took up the tenor banjo, organized the Graineog Celidh Band around two master musicians from County Clare, Joe Cooley and Kevin Keegan, and spent six months in the west of Ireland, visiting and learning from older traditional musicians there.   Eric will be playing a private concert with Andy Statman on Sunday December 15th at 2pm in Brooklyn (Near Prospect Park)  Email ericandandysi@gmail.com for info and reservations.

Savannah Pope New Release - STOP PRESS We had a last-minute inclusion to the show this week. Friend of the show Savannah Pope has a new release just yesterday (30th November 2018). Because of this, Savannah's publicist Lesley Zimmerman reached out to us to give us the heads up on the new release. It meant some dashing to the studio to do an out of hours edit, but to us, and hopefully our listeners, it was worth it. The rest of the show has new music from The Lone Bellow among other delights. In addition, we welcome Jordan to the show to introduce his Listener Recommendation by Tom Misch. In addition, Tobin hits us with new music from Big Wild and I get all retrospect with my vinyl spin of Rodney O and Joe Cooley. Furthermore, Sigur Rós bookend the show. Firstly though, before we get cracking please take a moment to drop by Facebook and give us a like. Secondly, try out our Instagram channel too. This is the second single to be released from her upcoming full-length album, due out in early 2019. "Daddy Issues" rocks hard, and the song highlights Savannah’s powerful, soaring vocal range. It follows a man and a woman, both of whom are very damaged.  Through two separate perspectives, “Daddy Issues” explores the ways in which father figures affect the emotional and romantic lives of their children, and how difficult such generational cycles are to break. Check out "Daddy Issues" HERE According to Savannah, “'Daddy Issues' is largely about toxic masculinity. Let me be clear: by ‘toxic masculinity,’ I don't mean to say that men are inherently, or as a whole, pernicious. On the contrary, the song is about the fallout of defining masculinity by a limited palette of self-expression. Traditionally, men have been taught to be emotionally cut-off. They’ve been taught that anger is the only acceptable form of acting out. At the same time, being a man comes with certain societal advantages. In my opinion, this strange cocktail of constraint and privilege does a lot of damage that gets passed down generation to generation.” More about Savannah... Savannah makes incendiary, soulful rock music, and her songs boast stunning lyricism and vocal power. Her stage presence is larger than life, and should be experienced firsthand by any music lover. Influenced by such luminaries as David Bowie, Amy Winehouse, Lou Reed, Queen, Joni Mitchell, Gossip, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Heart, Savannah’s music blends classic rock elements with a unique modern sensibility. Savannah has been named by the LA Weekly as one of the top artists to see in Los Angeles. Until one year ago, she was the vocalist and leader of glam rock band SpaceCream, which won the Battle for Vans Warped Tour in 2014 and released the acclaimed album Pterodactyl Sky in 2016. Savannah has performed at LA Fashion Week and opened for international artists like Starcrawler. The release of her last single and music video saw glowing press response and social media endorsement by public figures like director Edgar Wright ("Baby Driver") and Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo! Music Editor and Sirius XM host). Perhaps the best way to immerse oneself in Savannah’s world is to see her bring her music ...

Terry Heller on working for Eazy-E Straight Outta High School plus other crazy shiz

This week’s guest is Terry Heller. In this episode you will find snippets of music from The Pharcyde, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and WC. The EDM.com Track of the Week is Morris by King Mez: https://soundcloud.com/hip-hop/king-mez-morris Man, Terry Heller has seen some shit. As a teenager, he hung around with NWA. (His uncle Jerry was NWA’s infamous manager played by Paul Giammati in Straight Outta Compton.) Fresh out of high school Terry went to work for Eazy-E, finding talent like the group that would become the Black Eyed Peas and shooting videos for Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. After years as a successful music video director and real estate developer, Terry opened Plan Check — an updated spin on the all-American burger joint that quickly won lots of awards and has become a favorite of LA foodies. In this episode, Terry shares some NWA stories and insight into how he’s built his career. And it goes a little something like this: 1. Have no fear. He learned that by watching Eazy, maybe the most fearless person ever. There’s no limit on what you can accomplish if you believe you can. 2. Reinvent. When Plan A no longer worked for Terry, he didn’t sit around wishing it would change; he moved on to Plan B, and then to Plan Check (see what I did there?!). 3. Fake it ’til you make it. Terry uses his fear of being found a fraud to push himself to work harder. Is that what you do or do you let it slow you down? Any thoughts on the episode? Did you see Straight Outta Compton? In homage to the music he suckled on as a youth, badass beat junkie Bobby Corridor has put together this colossal hip hop megamix, shoeshorning an obscene 600+ tracks into 90 minutes.   In what he describes as 'a blip in the matrix', Mr Corridor has been nominated for best hip hop DJ in this year's DJ Awards. If you'd like to help Bobby on his way to sipping a mojito around the pool as Cox and Tong lord it about in their g-strings, head over there and give your support! Alternatively, you can make yourself a mojito and check out Bobby's wicked Reggae Source mixtape that he recorded for Spannered in 2007.   Everybody in the house say hell yeah!   Tracklisting (roughly speaking...): Boogie Down Productions – The Bridge Is Over Boogie Down Productions – P Is Free Ten Thieves – It Don’t Matter Quasimoto – Bad Character East Flatbush Project – Tried By Twelve Beatnuts – Sandwiches Levi 167 – Something Fresh to Swing To Mic Geronimo – The Natural Doug E Fresh – Play This Only At Night Royal Flush – Worldwide Big Shug – Crush DITC – The Enemy Public Enemy – Shut ‘Em Down Ultimate Force – I’m Not Playin’ Boogie Down Productions – Dope Beat Saukrates – Father Time LL Cool J – The Breakthrough Gang Starr – You Know My Steez Common – Nuttin’ to Do Jeru – The Bullshit MC Shan – Project Ho Ultramagnetic MCs – One Two, One Two MC Mitchski – Brooklyn Blew Up The Bridge Goodie Mob – Cell Therapy Just Ice – Latoya Just Ice – Going Way Back Eric B & Rakim – My Melody LL Cool J – I Need A Beat Just Ice – Put That Record Back On Craig Mack – Flava In Ya Ear Rammelzee & K Rob – Beat Bop Notorious BIG – Big Poppa Audio Two – Top Billin’ Chill Rob G – Future Shock Big L – MVP Masta Ace – Born To Roll Fat Joe – Shit Is Real Gang Starr – DJ Premier In Deep Concentration Marley Marl – He Cuts So Fresh Dr Dre – Keep Their Heads Ringinh Group Home – Supastar Boogie Down Productions – Criminal Minded Krown Rulers – B Boy Document Showbiz & AG – Next Level Notorious BIG – Unbelievable King Tee – Payback’s A Mutha Group Home – Livin’ Proof MC Shan – Beat Biter Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Brooklyn Zoo (remix) Alliance – We Can Get Used To This Paula Perry – Paula’s Jam Cool C – Mary Go Round Kings of Pressure – You Know How To Reach Us Jeru – Come Clean Junior Mafia – Player’s Anthem Nas – One Love Heltah Skeltah – Operation Lockdown Fuschnickens – Ring the Alarm Heltah Skeltah – Operation Lockdown Kirk – Feel the Boom Blahzay Blahzay – Danger Krumbsnatcha – Closer to God De La Soul – Bizness Real Live – Real Live Shit DITC – One Day Rasco – The Unassisted Busta Rhymes – Woo Ha Common – Doinit Pharcyde – Drop A Tribe Called Quest – Find a Way Pharcyde – Bullshit Common – I Used to Love H.E.R Quasimoto – Discipline 99 pt.1 Common – Resurrection Nas – Halftime Das EFX – Microphone Checka Grand Puba – I Like It Bas Blasta – Dangerous LL Cool J – Dangerous Kurious – Walk Like a Duck Big Daddy Kane – Smooth Operator Beatnuts – Props Over Here (Remix) KRS One – Rappaz R N Danja A Tribe Called Quest – Bonita Applebum Slick Rick – It’s a Boy (Remix) Apache – Gangsta Bitch Young MC – Got More Rhymes Reflection Eternal – Fortified Live Raekwon – Ice Cream Gza – Shadowboxin’ KRS One – MCs Act Like They Don’t Know Craig Mack – Get Down (remix) Casual – That’s How It Is Jeru – D’Original Peanut Butter Wolf & Charizma – My World Premiere World Reknown – Come Take a Ride Bush Babeez – Remember Me Lord Finesse – Funky Technician AWOL – Bring It Up De La Soul – Potholes in my Lawn Gang Starr – Blowin’ Up the Spot Medina Green – Crosstown Beef Jungle Brothers – Jimbowski Das EFX – Kaught in Da Ak Quasimoto – Put a Curse On You Beatnuts – No Equal Lenchmob – Lenchmob Also In The Group King Tee – Played Like a Piano Little Shawn – I Made Love Lady of Rage – Afro Puffs MC Lyte – Cappucino The Nonce – Mixtapes Pharoah Monch – Simon Says KRS One – Sound Of Da Police Cool C – Juice Crew Dis Lord Finesse – You Know What I’m About KRS One – Outta Here Latee – No Tricks Dr Dre – 187 Strickly Roots – Beg No Friends Gang Starr – Step In The Arena Boogie Down Productions – Super Hoe Boogie Down Productions – Poetry Mad Skillz – Nod Factor Nonce – Eighty Five Boogie Down Productions – My Philosophy A Tribe Called Quest – Against The World A Tribe Called Quest – 1nce Again Lyricist Lounge Allstars – CIA Cyclops 400 – Macro Scope Bucksot Lefonque – Music Evolution Big Lady K – Don’t Get Me Started Lord Finesse – Funky Technician Ed OG & Da Bulldogs – I Gotta Have It Kenny Dope – Supa Crooklyn Dodgers – Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers A Tribe Called Quest – Check The Rhime Gang Starr – The ? Here's yet another one that got away.  This is close to the version the box player Joe Cooley from Peterswell, Co.Galway, played.  He mightn't have had a blocked left ear, though.  I think it's either blocked with bits of forgotten tunes or else maybe that's were all the odd socks are. The stereo version of this reel is very popular in sessions.

I'm sure this one is actually le hAinm but I can't remember the name. It's on a very popular record - Noel Hill & Tony Linnane's LP. I've lost this record so I can't get the name of the tune. If someone can remember the name, please let me know and I'll update the title here. I've 2 suggestions now for the name. Is it now "Kitty's Wedding to Joe Cooley"? ... Joe Cooley seems to be in the lead at the moment.
