If you're human, there's a high liklihood that you've experienced pain and suffering in your life. Debbie Downer intro, but it's true! While we can't undo the pain each of us has experienced, what if we could harness that pain and use it for good? That's the call (and opportunity) we each have. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton shares examples of Tyler Joseph (Twenty One Pilots) and Joni Eareckson, and how our biggest area of potential impact is probably directly through our pain. When we harness all the junk in our past, we can use it to make an impact on this world. It's not always fun, but it's profoundly powerful. Erstens bekenne Gott deine Untauglichkeit.

Stephen Tracey talks with the Rev. Gordon Cook, (Pastor of Living Hope, OPC, Brunswick, ME, and recently retired as a hospital chaplain) and Dr. Logan Murray, (Pediatric Hospitalist, and Ruling Elder in Living Hope OPC, Brunswick, ME). This episode is full of practical insights and wisdom on visiting people in hospital, or in hospice care. Jesus reminds us that visiting the sick is one of the marks of his sheep, “I was sick and you visited me…Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:36 & 40."One learns to visit the sick by doing it and allowing the patient to be your teacher." Gordon Cook“None of us do this perfectly. Take the pressure off yourself in terms of aiming for perfection, and go and be the person you are—that's what the person needs. They need you. They need you to be yourself and you have that privilege, so just take it and do it.” Logan Murray.Recommended ReadingGordon recommends the following books, though most are not distinctly Reformed, they are all worthwhile.Carson & Koenig, Spiritual Caregiving Healthcare as a Ministry, Templeton Foundation Press, 2004 Holst, Lawrence, Hospital Ministry, the Role of the Chaplain Today, Crossroad Publishing, 1987.Oates & Oates, People in Pain Guidelines for Pastoral Care, The Westminster Press, 1985. Robert Kapen was an athletic college student studying Parks and Rec and working part-time at an outdoor Young Life camp when his life turned upside down. In the summer of 2011, a mystery virus caused a bilateral stroke that left him suddenly paralyzed and unable to speak. With his mind fully functioning but no ability to move or communicate verbally, Robert felt trapped in his own body.Over the next 8 years, Robert diligently engaged in speech, physical, and occupational therapies. When he was moved to a rehab facility located near the workplace of his friend, Nelly, she began visiting him regularly to brighten his day. As Robert’s communication developed from blinking to texting, his friendship with Nelly also blossomed into a relationship and eventually marriage. This week on the podcast, Robert and Nelly are sharing their story of God’s generous provision through seasons of disability, recovery, marriage, and caregiving. And as Robert approaches his 10-year anniversary of paralysis, he is thrilled that in God’s providence, he has found his voice to record his first podcast interview alongside Nelly!Resources:Visit Robert's WebsiteFind Robert on Instagram and FacebookWatch Joni and Ken's Marriage Advice for Caregiving: As an inter-abled couple, caregiving has brought Ken and Joni Eareckson closer together. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/707/29 A 1967 diving accident in the Chesapeake Bay left Joni Eareckson a quadriplegic. As she pondered her recovery in a hospital bed, Joni clung to John 5, which recounts how Jesus healed the paralytic. Like the man at the pool of Bethesda, Joni did not want her Savior to pass her by. However, she came to realize that her salvation was, first and foremost, for her justification. And secondly, Jesus wanted to sanctify her so she would become more like Him, even in her suffering.
Today, we begin week six of our series, “Imagining a New Life and a New Story.” In this season of Lent, we’ve observed the practices that formed Jesus’ story and life. This week, we consider the very challenging practice of “taking the one seat,” when we have only one option in life and it is not a good option.

Joni Eareckson was born October 15, 1949 and is a Christian author, radio host, and founder of Joni and Friends, an organization "accelerating Christian ministry in the disability community." On July 30, 1967, she dived into the Chesapeake Bay after misjudging the shallowness of the water. Listen up for a tender and eye-opening conversation on being an adoptive and foster parent. I interviewed my friend Lindsay on her foster care and adoption journey. We talk about the highs, the lows, and all the parts in between. View below for full episode notes. Lindsay and her husband always knew they would be living as modern-day missionaries, but they did not expect it to be in this way. Nearly five years ago they embarked on an adventure that would prove to be the toughest and the most rewarding of their lives. Their very first foster placement eventually became their forever baby, now their 4-year old little boy. 2 more foster children and one biological babe later and they are already on to the next adoption journey. In this conversation, Lindsay shares about their experiences with each of the children that have been in their home. She is open and honest about the good parts and the bad, and what baggage each of the unique situations brought along with them. Lindsay addresses some common fears and stereotypes that come along with foster care and adoption and offers real, genuine encouragement to individuals who are considering adoption in their futures. Lindsay also shares some practical tips on how to love families well who are serving as foster and adoptive parents. Lindsay and I touch on what it's like to have an interracial family and some of the challenges that come along with that. Lindsay admits that she was naïve to the obstacles that having a family made up of different races would bring and how she went about educating herself so that she could be the best mom possible to a child that is a different color than she is. She also talks about action steps that she and her husband are taking now to provide for children of color in their home in the future. The foster care and adoption world is a place where Hollywood stories cloud our realities so very easily. Throughout our interview, Lindsay opened my eyes to a lot of incorrect assumptions that I had and pointed out many things about the system that I had never before thought of. Whether or not foster care or adoption is something that has appealed to you before, this conversation and Lindsay's story will tug at your heart strings and give you a soft spot for families that endure similar circumstances. Lindsay's lovely Instagram feed and blog writing will also do the same thing, so make sure you check her out!
