“I never really wanted kids because I never wanted to care more about somebody than I did myself. And when I had them, I became vulnerable. I was no longer invincible. I think that was something I needed.” James Harrison 2x Super Bowl Champ and 5x Pro Bowler on his biggest Pivot After the sports world just witnessed one of the best defensive performances by a team in a Super Bowl with Philadelphia's win, we can't help but remember the infamous 100 yard interception return by James Harrison in Super Bowl XLIII and how maybe the All Pro Line Backer was onto something when he said, "Offense win games, Defense win championships." The Super Bowl hero and former Pittsburgh Steelers All Pro sits with his old teammate Ryan Clark, along with Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor, for a wide open and wide ranging conversation about his NFL journey, his unmatched intensity on and off the field and how fatherhood saved his life. Starting out the gate, the question is asked: Is James Harrison actually scary, or just misunderstood? Channing has funny banter as the guys debate James' intense, no-nonsense demeanor and how he maintained this alter ego. Harrison shares how he was raised to believe that kindness could be mistaken for weakness and lived by that mantra with his on-field play reflecting it. Harrison opens up about his struggles early on in his career from playing at Kent State to NFL Europe to getting cut multiple times, and almost walking away from football. But his relentless work ethic instilled from his parents and a 'chip on the shoulder' mentality fueled his efforts. He shares how Steelers Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau played a crucial role in shaping his career, admitting that without him, “There is no James Harrison.” Harrison doesn't hold back when discussing some of his hardest hits and biggest fines, including a notable play involving Josh Cribbs that cost him $75,000, which he feels he shouldn't have paid, but perhaps someone in the room who was truly responsible for it, should have paid, as he gives a look to Ryan. The guys get into a deeper conversation about how the locker room and playing mentality was different during their days vs today's era. He reveals in a shocking story, what ultimately led him to leave Pittsburgh to play with AFC rivals Patriots and then Bengals. Always living on the edge with a reckless abandon approach to all aspects of his life, Harrison opens up on how becoming a father didn't just soften him, but changed his entire outlook financially, mentally and even safety wise. In a heartfelt moment, James shares the 180 his life took after becoming a dad and how 100% honesty is what guides his parenting skills, even when some things are better off not said! From parenting advice to chatting about James' potential MMA/boxing match with Chad OchoCinco Johnson, the guys' conversation goes from laugh out loud moments to tears filling up discussing the evolution of life as the men have grown older. This episode has it all whether a football fan or curious about life, family, growth as we peel back the layers of James Harrison- the fierce competitor, the devoted father, and the man who never backs down from a challenge. So, how about that Aaron Rodgers debut? Oof. Getting out of the Mets game and finding out that's how it went… a strange time.According to data from Stathead, there are 17 non-quarterbacks who have thrown more passes for the Jets than Rodgers' single attempt before getting hurt. And here they are!12: Tom Tupa (punter, 1999-2001)7: Dick Christy (halfback, 1961-63); Brad Smith (wide receiver, 2006-10)4: Jeremy Kerley (wide receiver, 2011-17); Jim Turner (kicker, 1964-70)3: Josh Cribbs (wide receiver, 2013); Matt Snell (fullback, 1964-72); Al Toon (wide receiver, 1985-92)2: Louie Aguiar (punter, 1991-93); Richie Anderson (fullback, 1993-2002); Leon Johnson (running back, 1997-2000); LaMont Jordan (running back, 2001-04); Braden Mann (punter, 2020-22); Curtis Martin (running back, 1998-2005); Steve O'Neal (punter, 1969-72); Bilal Powell (running back, 2011-19); Chuck Ramsey (punter, 1977-84)Aguiar, Anderson, Christy, Johnson, and Jordan were unable to register a completion, with Aguiar, Johnson, and Jordan all getting picked off once. Snell also threw an interception, the only other one of this group to do so. Only three of these players threw for touchdowns: Smith, the former Mizzou quarterback, had one, while Tupa hurled two TD passes and both of Martin's attempts turned into six points.Just the other day, Bill Belichick rememberred Tupa's exploits from Cleveland, but he was very much there on the Jets sideline the day that the punter saved the day with his two TD passes. Scott Raab ended this week's podcast telling everyone to go to the dentist, don't do drugs and stay in school. You should listen all the way to the end to see how we got there. As per usual, here's the email I sent Scott last night. --------------- They beat the Ravens. It was a "proof of parity" game for the Browns. The Cleveland Browns with Jason Campbell are no longer defying the rules of parity in the NFL! There's nothing like going into a bye week with a win. Love it. Love being consistently mediocre with a chance to win. I hate myself for loving it as much as I do. Farewell Chris Perez. There was a lot of talk about Chris Perez' legacy this week in Cleveland and it seems like a waste of breath. I supported Chris Perez talking when he was in Cleveland because I kind of like it when athletes don't shy away from saying something real as opposed to a cookie-cutter phrase. But Perez is proof positive that you can erase anything good you did by being an asshole. You look at Vinnie Pestano and how he imploded this year and how the fans stuck by him, and it kind of tells the tale. Pestano didn't have anywhere near the success for the Tribe that Perez did, and because he was such a nice guy they supported him even when he failed them on the field. There's a Josh Cribbs thought in here as well. Totally different case, but he seems to put all that good will in jeopardy from time to time with a quote or a tweet. Granted, I still don't understand why fans would be upset with Josh Cribbs for talking trash about his former teammates and coaches. It isn't like he said Browns fans quit at any point. But here were a bunch of Cleveland fans presumably getting bent out of shape as if they needed to spring to the defense of Mike Holmgren, Pat Shurmur, Eric Mangini Braylon Edwards, or Romeo Crennel. Lastly, I asked on Twitter, despite how early it is, what if the Cavs stink this year? How much rope does Chris Grant have? Again, I know it's ridiculously early, but Michael Carter-Williams and Ben McLemore (for example) are already showing things in the NBA. Anthony Bennett has two points in three games with those two points coming on free throws. Plus as you've noted time and again, he's out of shape. So, does Chris Grant get until after the presumed LBJ free agency if they fail to win this year? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Again this week, I thought I'd skip the bullet points and just send you the email I sent to Scott the night before the podcast. Wherever we end up is based on this email and the conversation that ensues. We ended up talking about concussions in football, Tribe attendance and any number of other topics including some from my Sunday night email below. -------------- I'd love to spend some time talking about a packed pre-season game in a dome with cheerleaders and their fans wearing irrelevant jerseys. Because they've been so good for so long, save one bad year, even their dead jerseys aren't embarrassing. Dwight Freeney is gone but they still wear his jersey. Jeff Saturday is retired, but he was well represented. Peyton Manning, of course. Edgerrin James. Meanwhile I saw a Tim Couch jersey on the way in. Took a photo for evidence as if anyone would question it. As for the game itself... Brandon Weeden stares down receivers. He's going to get Jordan Cameron murdered this season. I'd love to know your thoughts from TV. I feel like I missed a lot from being live. Josh Cribbs cut by the Raiders. Is this the end for Mr. Cribbs? Now that he's not on the Browns anymore it makes it easier to be sympathetic toward him. Just a perfect example of how brutal the NFL is when it spits out 30 year olds, even if they have made a nice amount of money first. It isn't Cleveland related, but Mark Sanchez and the Jets have been a favorite topic of mine for years now. I'm guessing you're close enough to that team (geographically) that you might have a take or two about Rex Ryan and all that went down this weekend. I can't help but get some interest out of the fact that Sanchez was the Browns' slotted pick and now MoMass threatens Braylon Edwards' roster spot in NYJ-land. Love that team for all the wrong reasons. I know it's unbecoming to pump yourself up by dragging others down, but it's sports. Indians 1.5 back of the wild card as I type this. A's headed to Detroit. Indians have ATL, DET, BAL and NYM. I'm still disappointed that they didn't do more at the deadline than Zep-Chin-Ski, and I didn't get to watch a ton of live action this weekend, but I'm really focused on the Tribe anyway. I go back and forth between loving it and feeling salty that they haven't addressed enough needs. I think it might be me and not them at this point. And then I don't think it's my fault at all. I'm pretty schizophrenic about my feelings for the Tribe. That's all I'm thinking of right now, but driving 6 hours to Indy on Friday and 6 hours back on Sunday with two kids is a pretty good reason why I might have missed a big topic. Always good to catch up with the Browns observations with Nate Ulrich from the Akron Beacon Journal. Here's all that we discussed. How good do you feel not having to talk Tebow? Bill Belichick out to prove he doesn't have to talk about anything. Gregg Popovich and how he just defies everyone to do what he wants.
