It's NBA Draft week and Danny Marang and Brandon Sprague are taking on your questions in an hour long mail bag extravaganza! Between rumors, workouts, news breaks and everything in between, there's been no shortage of discussion topics as the Blazers head into the biggest changeover the franchise has seen in at least 6 seasons and with those changes come questions. On this episode Danny and Brandon give somewhat bold predictions for expectations on the NBA Draft and who they see possibly falling short of expectations. Is Chet Holmgren really a unicorn? Does Ben Mathurin profile like a lead scoring guard or is he more reminiscent of Ben McLemore? With the Stepien Rule possibly holding the Blazers pick right until they make it - does that effect the timing of what we may see for a potential trade involving that pick? If it came down to it, would you be “okay” with the Blazers using the 7th overall pick and not looking to compete now based on expectations the franchise has laid out? What does a “good, better, best” scenario look like for Portland following the NBA Draft and what constitutes a successful Draft day? If you had to rank OG Anunoby, John Collins, Jerami Grant, using the pick and everything else the Blazers have been linked to - what looks most likely and where does that line up with what they need to get done? That and more on this week's mail bag show! Marc-Andre Fleury is back in the playoff picture after the Minnesota Wild acquired the three-time Stanley Cup-winner in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks get in return a conditional 2nd round pick from Minnesota, the draft pick will become a first round pick if the Wild make the Western Conference finals. The Red Wings made no major moves on deadline day. Detroit sent defensemen Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Oskar Sundqvist, defenseman Jake Walman, as well as the Blues 2nd round draft pick in 2023 draft. Detroit also traded forward Vladislav Namestnikov to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 4th round pick in 2024. The panel made the decision in upholding the April 2020 decision by U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff to dismiss a lawsuit by fantasy sports contestants who claimed they were damaged by sign stealing in Major League Baseball. The five men who sued participated in fantasy contests hosted by DraftKings from 2017 to 2019. NFL – Blockbuster: Colts get QB Matt Ryan in trade with Falcons The Indianapolis Colts have acquired their new quarterback, Matt Ryan, in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. Indy is sending a third-round pick, No. 82 overall, for the longtime Falcons star. Ryan led Atlanta to its second Super Bowl appearance following the 2016 season. That was the same season Ryan was named the league’s MVP. His arrival means the Colts will be starting a new opening-day quarterback for the sixth consecutive year. The rebuilding Falcons quickly announced the signing of Marcus Mariota, a former No. 2 overall pick. The 28-year-old Mariota played sparingly over the past two seasons as a backup to Derek Carr with the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL – QB Stafford: ‘Right time and place’ to give Rams discount Matthew Stafford realizes he almost certainly could have gotten more money in a contract extension after his outstanding debut season with the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford admitted his priority isn’t more dollars. It’s more rings, and he believes his new four-year, $160 million deal through 2026 gives him the best opportunity to win them with the defending Super Bowl champions. Stafford recognizes the absurdity of considering a deal with $135 million in guaranteed money and a reported $60 million signing bonus to be some sort of discount, yet that’s what it is for a proven veteran quarterback of Stafford’s talents. Golf – Still out of sight, Mickelson decides to sit out the Masters Phil Mickelson won’t be playing in the Masters this year. Mickelson has been out of sight since inflammatory remarks against the Saudi-funded rival league and the PGA Tour. He’s no longer listed under players expected to be compete in this year’s Masters. Instead, his name has been moved on the official website to past champions not playing. It will be the first time since 1994 that Mickelson is not at the Masters. He lost sponsorship deals after an interview in which he says he was willing to overlook human rights atrocities if it meant getting leverage over the PGA Tour. Horse Racing – Judge rejects Baffert stay but delays suspension to April 4 A Kentucky judge has denied Bob Baffert’s request to stay his 90-day suspension but delayed it until April 4 to allow his representatives to seek emergency relief through the state’s Court of Appeals. Stewards suspended and fined Baffert $7,500 last month and disqualified Medina Spirit as the Kentucky Derby winner after determining the now-deceased horse had the corticosteroid betamethasone in his system last May. Baffert is fighting that decision. Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate said Monday that the court understands the gravity of its ruling on Baffert but said that absent relief from a reviewing court, the stewards’ penalties will begin next month. A Baffert attorney said they would appeal. Anfernee Simons scored 23 points and dished out a career-best 11 assists to lead the shorthanded Portland Trail Blazers to a 114-108 win over the Brooklyn Nets. Simons didn't shoot well but had the best floor game of his career in guiding the Blazers to a stunning upset win over Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and the Nets, who came into the game 14-3 on the road. Without Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum or Norman Powell in the lineup, Simons got help from Robert Covington (21 points) and Ben McLemore (17 points) to hold off a late charge and give Portland its third win in the last five games. Did someone say tanking? This was the most entertaining win, unexpected win of the season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Locked On Blazers – Daily Podcast On The Portland Trail Blazers
Seven Trail Blazers have entered the league's health and safety protocols and are set to miss 10 days before they are eligible to return to action. Portland will be without Jusuf Nurkic, Robert Covington, Dennis Smith Jr., Ben McLemore, Cody Zeller and Keljin Blevins for at least the next 10 days, and somewhere between four and give games, after all seven players were put into the protocols in the days after Dec. 24.The Blazers have since signed three players out of the G League and enter Monday's game against the Dallas Mavericks with just nine available players and a massive lack of frontcourt depth. So what's next for Portland? Will they add another big man? Will this 10 days officially tank their season? Is Damian Lillard about to do some super hero stuff? There's a lot of questions and at least some of them get answered in this episode. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Locked On Blazers – Daily Podcast On The Portland Trail Blazers
Damian Lillard returned to the Trail Blazers starting lineup after missing the previous five games with an abdominal issue. Portland also switched up its starting group inserting Larry Nance Jr. and Nassir Little at the forward spots. The more things change, the more things stay the same as the Blazers lost their fifth straight game to the Minnesota Timberwolves. There were some fun bright spots from Anfernee Simons and Ben McLemore, but the final seven minutes saw the Blazers blow a lead and come up short in the clutch. That's enough bad news for one episode so this one closes with a Moment of Joy shared by a listener about falling in love with Blazers basketball. Learn more about your ad choices. Locked On Blazers – Daily Podcast On The Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers beat the Detroit Pistons 110-92 on Tuesday night in a game where Damian Lillard, Norman Powell and Nassir Little all sat out with injuries. But the shorthanded Blazers got 28 points from CJ McCollum and a professional scorer type night from Ben McLemore who added 17 off the bench. It wasn't a pretty win, but you do not score extra for style points. There's still plenty to unpack. Like, McCollum's legacy after he passed Cliff Robinson to move into fifth on the Blazers all time scoring list, McLemore's approach to staying ready as a veteran who doesn't play much and whether Pistons forward Jerami Grant is an intriguing trade target for the Blazers.Music for Locked On Blazers by Drae Slapz. Now, all of Blazers nation waits to see if Neil Olshey will make a big move to improve the team in a way that appeals to Damian Lillard. Plus, the 76ers hire someone really, really close to Dame. Jason Kidd is always a hot name for coaching searches, and this offseason is no exception. The Lakers' assistant coach will reportedly interview with the Orlando Magic, which prompts a discussion about his credentials... and also his off-court baggage. It's also the anniversary of the Lakers' 2009 championship, which the Kamenetzkys covered. What are the biggest memories of that team? And finally, they kick off a series examining the performance of key players. It begins with the back of the rotation: Markieff Morris, Jared Dudley and Ben McLemore.Hosts: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: It feels like Kidd will be coaching somewhere else next season, despite a mediocre reputation as a tactician and many past transgressions away from the court. The Kamenetzkys discuss the compartmentalization allowing this to happen, as well as what traits the Lakers should target in his replacement.SEGMENT 2: Twelve years ago, the Lakers won title #16, and Kobe Bryant's first as the team's unquestioned leader. Are there commonalities between that team's arc and what LeBron James and Anthony Davis are currently experiencing?SEGMENT 3: A series examining the seasons of different Lakers: What can be learned, in terms of roster construction, from several back-of-the-rotation players?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. There's no real shame in losing the last game of a road trip to a Washington team playing as well as any in the NBA right now, but sometimes how matters, and the Lakers played poorly on both sides of the ball Wednesday and paid the price. Lakers Twitter was not pleased. We break down the loss, looking specifically at the impact Anthony Davis has had since his return. There's a lot of ire being directed at other players... but how much might AD be dragging guys down?SEGMENT 1: Davis' net rating since returning is awful, even as his statistical output increases. Why? Is there anything to be concerned about? Probably not, but it does add context to questions about what Frank Vogel ought to be doing with the supporting cast.SEGMENT 2:: Mailbag! Hit us up @Kambrothers on Twitter, or through our gmail (kamenetzkybrothers@gmail.com) to submit yours (if you aren't leaving them on our show page as part of a five star review). We talk Vogel's O, THT's potential playoff minutes and how much the Lakers need a true, consistent "third guy" this postseason.SEGMENT 3: More mailbag! AD at the five... plus we go deep on Ben McLemore, as entertaining a Laker as there is on the roster. Not necessarily for the right reasons, though.Coming FRIDAY: We welcome the great Howard Beck to the show. The Lakers rolled into Orlando having lost three straight. Thankfully, the Magic are a good cure for what might ail any team, and aside from a wretched second quarter, the Lakers were in control. Anthony Davis had his best game since returning from injury, and Montrezl Harrell, back in the lineup after a DNP-CD Saturday in Dallas, had his best game in a while. Unfortunately, Alex Caruso left the game with back spasms, another log on the long list of injuries and interruptions L.A. has faced. So how much might a lack of continuity hurt them in the postseason?HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: Lakers 114, Magic 103. A.D.'s mid-range game was rolling, and the defense (save that "disgusting" second quarter, to use a word mom loves) was high end. In a way, that game contained everything making Lakers fans excited and nervous about the team's playoff prospects.SEGMENT 2: Harrell bounced back big on Monday. Why? Does it mean a return to early season form is coming?SEGMENT 3: How much will a lack of continuity hurt the Lakers? On the one hand, they're losing out on a ton of reps, primarily because of injuries to LeBron James and Davis. That matters, a lot. On the other, there are some silver linings. Do they outweigh the negatives?Wednesday, we'll talk about a potential extension for Frank Vogel, the importance of Ben McLemore, and more.
