This is a throwback podcast from 2020. Co-hosts Jon and Chris talk safety culture in the construction industry with Owner and President Clayton Leibold from Leibold Inc. Leibold is a mechanical contractor based in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Leibold shares the biggest challenge for the construction industry regarding safety is overcoming job site hurdles and the pressure to complete work within shorter timelines. While the industry is facing a worker shortage, Leibold mentions that as a union mechanical construction company, they have a good source of competent and well-trained individuals from their apprenticeship programs. They focus on molding their key employees into effective safety leaders, combining field expertise with safety knowledge.Onboarding new hires can be a challenge, especially if they lack field experience or previous exposure to safety protocols. Leibold emphasizes the importance of educating and providing the necessary information and protocols to ensure new employees understand and abide by safety standards. It is crucial to instill a safety culture and not compromise on safety, even if it means taking longer or facing initial resistance. He advises other companies to emphasize safety as a priority and avoid compromising safety for shortcuts. Leibold mentions that more and more clients are prioritizing safety in their projects. Many clients demand a high safety standard, especially in sensitive facilities, and not meeting those standards could result in losing future work. The industry as a whole has placed a significant emphasis on safety in recent years, and Leibold believes that it is crucial to continue moving forward with a strong focus on safety to shape a positive perception of the industry. The discussion covers various aspects of safety culture in the construction industry, including the importance of education, buy-in from employees and clients, and the need to prioritize safety even when faced with challenges and tight timelines.Leibold Inc. has won two safety awards from the KCA for being the safest subcontractor under 50,000 man-hours worked with zero injuries for two consecutive years.

Jim Gabriel, president of MODLOGIQ shed light on why prefabrication is trending across the construction industry. Owners, general contractors, designers, and architects are turning to modular construction for several reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that the world is changing. Gabriel speaks openly about the pandemic and how modular construction has helped contractors and projects continue to move ahead even when job sites are shut down. This is due in part, to 80% of modular construction being constructed off-site. When MODLOGIQ finishes a project, it's set and ready to be shipped and installed without the headache of on-site construction. We also will put to rest some of the myths about modular construction and prefabrication. The perception is that modular construction is cheaper. Gabriel comments, “it's not cheaper, it provides more cost certainty for their clients and helps reduce cost escalation.” You'll also hear more about the unique ways modular construction is being used. Gabriel talks about “pushing the envelope” in their industry. Prefabrication and modularization are pushing to do more than just affordable housing or single-family homes. MODLOGIQ is trying to bring their business up to standards that designers and owners expect from traditional builds. We know our listeners always want to hear the take on safety as it relates to our topics. We asked Gabriel how prefabrication translates to a safer job site. He shares his thoughts, insights, and more in this next episode of the Building PA Podcast.

“It will never hurt your career to be more adventurous and multifaceted” Authenticity and vulnerability are the keys to human connection. Why, then, do we hesitate to be authentic and vulnerable on social media? In this episode with KCA project manager and non-musician perspective Jen Cubides, we talk about normalizing social media to capture the everyday. Being authentic on social media is a lot easier said than done. To help you take your first steps toward an authentic platform, Karen and Jen give some examples of content you can post to get started: Videos in the practice room, being gentle and honest with the imperfect parts of your playing Real day-in-the-life, what you're up to and where you are Behind the scenes, sharing bad days and how you overcome them Remember, we are all humans, imperfection is natural! We need to show up consistently and authentically to form connections with our audience. To do so, we can strategize our content to an extent in order to put ourselves in a position to share our lives regularly. Discipline equals freedom, and this discipline of strategy will leave room for us to be more spontaneous in what we share when those spontaneous times come: with the discipline of strategy, we don't have to worry about rushing through a post or racking our brains to come up with content for the day. We've planned for consistency and sustainability in our strategies! Lastly, social media is your portfolio. It will evolve and change just like we do. People will get to know who you were, who you are, and who you become, just as you're able to see the documentation of your own life in each season that you share.

Preserving yourself is your most important priority. This episode, we're joined by KCA project manager Jennifer Cubides for a non-musician's perspective on toxic work environments and strategies for dealing with them.  Firstly, we need to identify toxicity around us. This comes from how we feel at work and about work: Are we fearful? Afraid? Unfulfilled? Unsafe? Anxious? Second is to pinpoint what we can change: what boundaries can we set to preserve ourselves, what communication needs to be had, and what areas of our work environment are unavoidable toxicities? Outline your expectations and have clear communication for what you need to be supported. Lastly, if there are unavoidable toxicities that hinder your wellbeing and mental health, know when to tap out and preserve yourself. Plan an exit strategy to honor yourself first and foremost. “Wherever your focus goes, your energy flows.”

“Put your ego at the door and tell people what it is that you're doing.” Social media is an opportunity to get to know musicians as more than just musicians. Sometimes we have points of hesitation about being performative or posting things beyond our music, since it's our main point of focus, but we want to document our lives - not just our careers! This episode, we're here to offer you an outside perspective to see how reality looks from a different angle, more specifically, from a non-musician. We're starting this “Perspectives with Jennifer Cubides” series with our amazing KCA project manager (and elementary school teacher, dog mom, awesome person) to offer insights into the music industry that might not be so clear when we're deep within it ourselves. Having Jen on the KCA team has been pivotal for the agency in reimagining presentations, social media, photography, and overall brand. This episode, Jen and Karen talk candidly about social media and how it looks from a non-musician's side of things.  “I feel like as musicians, we cater to other musicians. These people are not necessarily hiring us / it's not the entire point.” Social media is more than just a marketing tool for your career - it's a documentation of your life. We want to know about the people behind the music, and social media can be a candid and authentic way to get there. Making sure our message comes across is the most important thing - try batching your content a week in advance with a thought in mind of what you want to share and how you're going to share it to ensure that you're putting out consistent, digestible, organized, and authentic content. Give clarity to allow your audience to be there for you, to show up, to support you, and to cheer you on. Don't shy away from normal life! Pull from different content buckets and cycle through them. For example, at KCA, some of our content buckets are education, Aldo and Reina, and moving our bodies. Having these content buckets makes it easier to plan/batch content and to establish what our brand really is.

The Musician's Guide To Being Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise

“Am I going to be able to learn in public, and am I going to be okay with that?” Trombonist, Blair School of Music Faculty, and dog dad Nick Laufer takes the wheel to interview KCA's Karen Cubides for this exciting episode, celebrating seven years of KCA, three iterations of the company, eighty episodes of the Musician's Guide Podcast, Karen's upcoming birthday, and Aldo and Reina's fourth birthday. Nick and Karen break open the challenges of creating and maintaining podcasts, such as performance anxiety in interviewing, balancing quality control against controlling everything, and elevating the podcast and the brand alike as she continues to bring exciting new professionals onto the show. Karen gets real about the unique pressure of feeling like a beginner when she started her podcast while also being a professional with clout. Karen also digs deep with some of the lessons she's learned along the way and in the current climates of the pandemic and of the social justice movement. She talks about what it's like to pivot and to bring artists of all walks of life onto the show, talking about their experiences with mental health, inequity in the arts and in arts education, women's rights, and more. In light of this, she discusses some of the plans for making the Musician's Guide Podcast an even greater guide for artists who are in need of direction in today's ever-changing world. How can I better elevate those around me? Who am I associating with? How can I better grow as a person to handle the next season of my professional life? Do I have to sacrifice my own well-being to meet a deadline in my career? What does it mean to show up for others -- or myself? If these kinds of questions are on your mind, then this episode is for you.
