If you're feeling upbeat about markets as we head into 2025, you're not alone. 41% of investors that participated in Livewire's Outlook Series Survey said they are feeling optimistic about markets right now, well ahead of the following most popular response with 30% of survey participants saying they are feeling anxious. The responses are not surprising, given the decisive run in equity markets in recent years. The S&P 500 is on the cusp of racking up consecutive years of 20%+ returns. A feat only achieved four times since 1926. The other instances occurred in 1927-1928 before the great depression, in 1942-1943 during World War II, from 1995-1999 there were unprecedented gains with five 20%+ years and more recently in 2017-2018. Investors are likely feeling optimistic given the strong returns on offer, whilst it is natural that anxiety is growing and a recognition that the good times won't last forever. Unfortunately, history provides little solace for those investors looking to the past in the hope that it might give some clues as to what 2025 might hold. The returns in the years following the four historical precedents are ambiguous, with a 50/50 split between negative and positive returns. However, the drawdown years were smaller than when markets continued to rally. So, how does this information help us, and what should investors think about as we head into 2025? To answer this question, we drew on the expertise of top-rated financial adviser Paul Burgon, Chief Investment Officer and Managing Partner at Lipman Burgon and Partners. Paul has decades of experience allocating capital on behalf of his clients and was ranked #6 in 2024 on Barron's list of top financial advisers. Even with his experience, Paul acknowledges that predicting the future is fraught with danger and a recipe for disappointment. However, over his career, he has developed a set of ten principles that he believes can underwrite investment success. These principles draw on the renowned endowment model of investing developed by David Swenson and are now widely adopted by many leading investment institutions, including Australia's Future Fund. Yale's endowment fund returns under Swenson are compelling, having delivered annual returns of 14% over 35 years. Summarising the underlying objective of Burgon's philosophy is relatively simple. He is seeking to remove or dampen the influence of emotions on investment decisions. In 2024, access to extensive research, institutional-grade investment models and improved access to private markets make it possible to achieve more consistent returns, reducing the prospect of poor decision-making at times of peak emotion. While few of us will be seeking to replicate the allocation of global endowment funds, I'm sure most of us would like to bank the healthy returns of recent years and dampen the impact of any impending market dislocations. “If you can have more reliability of outcomes in your equity allocation and more consistency of returns that is a much better way to allocate capital than trying to chase the next high-performing manager.” In the final episode of The Rules of Investing, we hope to leave you with valuable asset allocation and portfolio construction insights from one of Australia's top financial advisers. And while we'd all love to see another 20% + year from the S&P 500, it makes sense to ensure your portfolio can withstand the chance that 2025 could be a down year. Better to be safe than sorry!

Liam presents a very special live session in Thailand focusing on top 1% sales skills. The discussion delves into the importance of belief in the product or service being offered, the potential for earning in sales, and the transformative impact on people's lives, highlighting the concept of framing in sales conversations, emphasising the need to set expectations and build trust. KEY TAKEAWAYS Having a deep belief that the product or service being offered can solve someone's problem is paramount in sales. Framing conversations at the beginning of a sales consultation can build trust, set expectations, and disarm potential objections. Utilising a pros and cons list, focusing on time, money, and fear objections, and ensuring that the pros outweigh the cons can lead to successful sales. Summarising the outcome of the sale and demonstrating the journey the client will go on can be a powerful closing technique. BEST MOMENTS "When you listen to what we're about to say, when you implement this, you will get more leads. You will get more sales. You will make more money." "It's probably the most unknown and underrated sales technique there is because what framing allows you to do is firstly build trust." "Our job as salespeople, by handling these head on, we're not shying away from these objections. We're covering them, we're handling it head on." Whether you drink a little bit of South Australian wine, or a lot, your decisions about what you buy and where you buy it from, make a big difference. We sit with three passionate people from the wine industry, today, and they have some tales of woe to share, some stories about labour of love they all carry out, and some messages to those of us who'd like to see a thriving sector of small, family-run wineries who bring texture and body to the glass and to many circles of the economy throughout our state. There is no SA Drink Of The Week this week. Well, actually, there are four, but they are woven through the episode. And in the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature a new song from Suedan, that is slightly related to our theme: Whiskey Did It. They are interwoven throughout the episode. If you would like to hear the tasting notes, you'll find them here: 00:09:08 – Paulmara Estates 2021 “The Marriage” Cabernet Shiraz 00:47:27 – Ben Murray Wines 2021 Barossa Valley Shiraz 01:18:15 – Flinders Run 2021 Baroota Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 01:49:05 – Paulmara Estates 2021 ARETÎ 00:03:19 Paul Georgiadis, Emanuel Skorpos, Dan Eggleton It's a tough gig, being at the helm of a family-owned winery in Australia in 2024. China's tariffs on Australian wine bit hard, causing a glut in supply, while the multinationals like Coles and Woolworths used their clout to create “fake” boutique wines that “magically” got shelf space and retailer support from, well, Coles and Woolworths. Meanwhile, our 2500 wineries and grape growers have been contributing to the coffers of Wine Australia in the hope that its role of supporting and regulating the Australian grape and wine industry would mean that someone was looking out for them and not ignoring the big bad wolves who are plundering the sector every day. But, if you're surviving in this industry, maybe that's enough because as one of the guests who couldn't make it today was quoted as saying on the ABC recently, you don't get into the wine industry to make money, you do it because you love it! Who are our guests? We have Paul Georgiadis who, among other things, is the founder and owner of Paulmara Estates, along with his wife, Mara. We're recording at Paulmara in Marananga today. We also have the man who suggested we hold this discussion, Emanuel Skorpos, the Principal Vintner at Flinders Run in the Southern Flinders, and Dan Eggleton, the cofounder and winemaker at Ben Murray Wines and Principal and Founder of Vinous Consulting. I like naming elephants in rooms, so my first reflection is that we're all blokes, sitting around this table. We haven't excluded women, it's more that Emanuel is directly connected to you all and this gathering developed organically from there. Had we more microphones, I would have arranged for Jane Richards to join us from Eight At The Gate Wines in Wrattonbully – she is an absolute dynamo – and I'm sure you all work with women in different roles. Can we acknowledge some before we move on? The key theme of our discussion is that “mum and dad” wineries make up the bulk of those 2500 wineries in Australia, and it always hurts a bit when we see our Premier hobnobbing at a new Wolf Blass cellar door to celebrate government support for a business you'd think was hardly in need of extra help. Mind you, I did mention this to a winemaker friend of mine, who is also part of a family-run winery, and he confessed that he “gets it” because the levies that fund Wine Australia are based on volume and the big end of town contributes more than we do. Can we start here? What are the big pain points for family wineries right now, and where does the support of Wine Australia hit and miss, in your opinions? Summarising the role of Wine Australia, goes like this. It's role is to support and regulate the Australian grape and wine industry with its primary functions being Research and Development (R&D) (and sharing and commercialising results of that research), Marketing and Promotion to boost consumption of grape products here and overseas, Regulation and Compliance, especially when exporting, and User Pays activities. But I note this: Wine Australia operates under a Statutory Funding Agreement with the Australian Government, which prohibits it from engaging in political activities or acting as an industry representative. Its governance and operations aim to achieve the best possible return on investment for the Australian grape and wine sector. Does this mean it's not the body that has any role to play in protecting us from the savagery of the duopolies, or in lobbying for government support to be directed to particular sectors, like “mum and dad” wineries? While on the government front, state and federal governments are crowing about China's ending of the industry-strangling tariffs it had placed on Australian wine, but I haven't seen Emanuel popping the sparkling wine cork. Does this mean there is devil in the detail? I am curbing alcohol consumption and opting for quality over quanitity. I am not alone. What do you make of this trend? What's your message for government? Is it harder for them to care, given how many of you there are vs there being just a handful of big, headline-grabbing operators? What's your message for consumers? Should they change buying habits? Do little changes make a difference? 01:57:17 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature song by Suedan, from the latest album, Suedan Mountain Blues, titled, Whiskey Did It. Are you using AI in your business? Can it save you time, make you more efficient, and deliver a better experience to your customers? Depending on what you do and how you use AI, yes. So let's talk about how we are leveraging the power of AI right now in our business. The ways we use AI might surprise you, and it's probably not what you think. Want to get stuck into it? Let's go! We're going to share a bunch of things we've tried - some of which have been successful and others not so much.We don't sell any offers that are led with AI because we don't find anything created with AI is good enough. And we don't even use AI to write our emails or our subject lines, so we're not going to tell you to do that. Why? Because we tried to teach AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude.ai our methodology. But so far, we've not been able to make that work successfully. We don't believe that AI can do a better job than a human at writing your emails. Sure, there's something to be said for learning to write great prompts. And believe it or not, professional prompt writers are now a thing! But we're not that. Whatever you use AI for, it has to be good! Instead, we're going to give you ideas of how AI can save you time or make things easier for you. We're going to share how it can help by giving you new and diverse opinions and insights. The key though, we believe, is that whatever you use AI for, it has to be good! Can AI write subject lines for your emails? Can it write your emails? Absolutely. Are they going to be good enough? Probably not.If a subject line or an email (no matter who writes it) doesn't get the person at the receiving end to take action (whatever the action might be), then it's not good enough. If you're currently not doing email marketing and think you're going to use AI to do it for you because sending anything out is better than nothing, we don't think that's the case at all! Using the integration between Zoom & Vimeo to upload live training callsOne of the ways we use AI in our business is to upload the recording of our live training calls into our Members' Area to make them available to our students. Inside our programme, the Email Hero Academy, we run at least 3 live...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: NYT is suing OpenAI&Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement; some quick thoughts, published by Mikhail Samin on December 28, 2023 on LessWrong. Unpaywalled article, the lawsuit. (I don't have a law degree, this is not legal advice, my background is going through a US copyright law course many years ago.) I've read most of the lawsuit and skimmed through the rest, some quick thoughts on the allegations: Memorisation: when ChatGPT outputs text that closely copies original NYT content, this is clearly a copyright infringement. I think it's clear that OpenAI & Microsoft should be paying everyone whose work their LLMs reproduce. Training: it's not clear to me whether training LLMs on copyrighted content is a copyright infringement under the current US copyright law. I think lawmakers should introduce regulations to make it an infringement, but I wouldn't think the courts should consider it to be an infringement under the current laws (although I might not be familiar with all relevant case law). Summarising news articles found on the internet: copyright protects expression, not facts (if you read about something in a NYT article, the knowledge you received isn't protected by copyright, and you're free to share the knowledge); I think that if an LLM summarises text it has lawful access to, this doesn't violate copyright if it just talks about the same facts, or might be fair use. NYT alleges damage from Bing that Wikipedia also causes by citing facts and linking the source. I think to the extent LLMs don't preserve the wording/the creative structure, copyright doesn't provide protection; and some preservation of the structure might be fair use. Hallucinations: ChatGPT hallucinating false info and attributing it to NYT is outside copyright law, but seems bad and damaging. I'm not sure what the existing law around that sort of stuff is, but I think even if it's not covered by the existing law, it'd be great to see regulations making AI companies liable for all sorts of damage from their products, including attributing statements to people who've never made them. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why Yudkowsky is wrong about "covalently bonded equivalents of biology", published by titotal on December 6, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. confidence level: I am a physicist, not a biologist, so don't take this the account of a domain level expert. But this is really basic stuff, and is very easy to verify. Recently I encountered a scientific claim about biology, made by Eliezer Yudkowsky. I searched around for the source of the claim, and found that he has been repeating versions of the claim for over a decade and a half, including in "the sequences" and his TED talk. In recent years, this claim has primarily been used as an argument for why an AGI attack would be extremely deadly. I believe this claim is factually incorrect. The quotes: I'm going to show the various versions of the claim I found below, with the relevant sentences bolded: To plausibly argue that "humans" were intelligently designed, you'd have to lie about the design of the human retina, the architecture of the human brain, the proteins bound together by weak van der Waals forces instead of strong covalent bonds Yudkowsky discussing the flaws of evolutionary design, in "the sequences" blog post "dark side epistemology". It was obvious years before Nanosystems that molecular nanomachines would in fact be possible and have much higher power densities than biology. I could say, "Because proteins are held together by van der Waals forces that are much weaker than covalent bonds," to point to a reason how you could realize that after just reading Engines of Creation and before Nanosytems existed. Yudkowsky discussing AI interventions on the alignment forum. A lot of the advantage of human technology is due to human technology figuring out how to use covalent bonds and metallic bonds, where biology sticks to ionic bonds and proteins held together by van der Waals forces (static cling, basically) Comment on a post discussing technology and AI. Algae are tiny microns-wide solar-powered fully self-replicating factories that run on general assemblers, "ribosomes", that can replicate most other products of biology given digital instructions. This, even though the proteins are held together by van der Waals forces rather than covalent bonds, which is why algae are far less tough than diamond (as you can also make from carbon). It should not be very hard for a superintelligence to repurpose ribosomes to build better, more strongly bonded, more energy-dense tiny things that can then have a quite easy time killing everyone. Yudkowsky's example scenario for how an AI could extinct humanity, on twitter Can you build your own synthetic biology, synthetic cyborgs? Can you blow straight past that to covalently bonded equivalents of biology where instead of proteins that fold together and are held together by static cling, you have things that go down much sharper potential energy gradients and are bundled together, people have done advanced design work about this sort of thing. Yudkowksy's Ted talk, again discussing AI capabilities, during the Q&A section. I broadly endorse this reply and have mostly shifted to trying to talk about "covalently bonded" bacteria, since using the term "diamondoid" (tightly covalently bonded CHON) causes people to panic about the lack of currently known mechanosynthesis pathways for tetrahedral carbon lattices. Yudkowsky's response to my recent article a few weeks ago, talking about how to refer to potential advanced nanotechnologies. Summarising the claim As you can see, Yudkowsky has repeated this claim several time over a time period spanning 15 years to just a few weeks ago, in very high profile contexts. These quotes all make roughly the same argument, which I will sum up as follows: Proteins are held together by weak van-der-waals forces, which are weak forces, akin to static...

Getting to the core of what makes a deal backable is at the forefront of anyone who is involved in search. That was the subject of this panel at last year's inaugural EtA Forum, which brought together four people involved in search in different ways to share their experiences. The key theme driving the conversation is, as the moderator, Paige Kohalmi says, “the searcher plus a good opportunity, and the right funding structure, is what makes a deal backable.” These three elements are equally core, and any investor is going to consider those three things closely, giving them equal weighting, before supporting an acquisition. One of the highlights from the panel was when the panellists discussed three different companies, in different sectors and with different profiles. They were asked to choose which of the three they liked most as a candidate for an investment. The fact that all three panellists chose a different first target just goes to highlight how subjective this process can be. Every investor and searcher is going to evaluate risk in a different way and, ultimately, come to a different conclusion. That does drive home the importance of character in the searcher and who they've got backing them, too. The capabilities of the searcher and what they will bring to the business can go a long way to strengthening the numbers sitting behind the business. The panel also covered a subject that is worth keeping in mind, that the downside with search is more protected than it would be with a VC or startup, because the business is already established and earning revenue. There's no point in looking at a business that hasn't proven this or hasn't got strong recurring revenue (or there are clear risks to that revenue), and margins are a key data point that can make a business very attractive. Overall, this is a fascinating panel for anyone who is interested in better understanding the thought processes that factor into deciding which searches to back. Connect with Paige Kohalmi: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paige-kohalmi/ Connect with Sahil Shekhar: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sahil-shekhar/ Connect with Tom McGhie: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tommcghie/ Connect with Lui Pangiarella: https://www.linkedin.com/in/luipangiarella/ What we discussed: 1:25 Paige introduces the panel and topic for discussion. 2:45 Tom kicks off the discussion with his perspective of placing debt – what makes a deal backable? 4:50 Sahil describes his approach to identifying opportunity and how to find a deal to be involved with. 7:16 From the perspective of an investor, Lui discusses the importance of resilience. 10:43 “Simplicity” is a core concept with funding. Lui and the panel discuss what that word means to them. 12:42 The panel segues to discuss balancing the share of upsides. As someone who has been involved in both search and investment, Sahil shares his perspective. 16:57 Summarising the discussion to date, Paige says “the searcher plus a good opportunity, and the right funding structure, is what makes a deal bankable.” The next question is – is one of these elements more important? 18:26 The panel is presented with three companies, and asked to pick apart the opportunity of each. 25:44 An extended Q & A with the panel. 21:49 Pete provides a summary and analysis of the key findings from the panel. Key quotes: Tom: “The most important thing in deciding whether a deal is bankable from a debt perspective and where we should place that deadline is actually the searcher the people involved.” Sahil: “Both as a searcher and as an investor, you're trying to protect the downside, and to reduce business risk. There is a bit of operator risk, because there's a transition in owner operators, so what you're trying to really protect against is other downsides.” Lui: “Recurring revenue is what we would put as our number one priority. If the business has got 90% recurring revenue, you know that you're going to survive next year. It's as simple as that. It's why project-based businesses don't work in search. Because if you don't replace the revenue that disappears, you've got a failure.” Tom: “From a debt perspective, there is no transactional efficiency in adding mezzanine finance in a deal that might be four or five million dollars. Or even thinking that you're going to do that.” Sahil: “There is more risk for an operator than they would be in a private equity environment.” Sahil: “From the investor point of view, you want to know that the searcher is committed, and will stick through with a company and in hard times… there are some deals where searchers are putting on director guarantees, and underwriting debt themselves personally, or making other significant personal contributions. There are many ways to get comfort on how all-in the searcher is.” Lui: “There is no scenario where the wrong searcher will actually give us the right opportunity and right structure.” Tom: “There is absolutely no benefit to a debt provider to thinking through the future trajectory, in terms of the opportunity upside, if the business hasn't been proven today, or hasn't been performing to this point.”

“Marketers have the largest job of the lives ahead of them. They have got to drive systemic behaviour change and move us collectively from this linear extractive wasteful, entirely unsustainable model of consumption, that our whole economy and economics is currently based on, and move people over to the sustainable circular economy.” Summarising the conversation we had with Tessa is a bit of a challenge, simply because in such a short space of time, we covered sooooo much. Food waste is one of the largest problems facing humanity today – the statistics are startling. Globally a third of all food we produce - that's over a trillion US$ of food is being thrown away every year. If food waste was a country it would be the 3rd largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Clearly the environmental impact is devastating - landmass, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, refridgeration, landfill emitting deadly levels of methan etc etc. But there's equally a moral and social problem around food waste - particularly at a time where, in the UK, and around the globe we're in the grips of a cost of living crisis, with families struggling to put food on the table. Olio is focused on one very specific part of the enormous problem –and for the UK, it's the largest problem. 50% of food waste in the UK is from food waste in the home, whilst only 2% at retail store level - so there's much to do about educating people - but also providing people with a simple and effective solution to connect with local people and share and redistribute what would otherwise go to waste. And Olio steps into this role just perfectly. Tessa shares the latest research from Olio - showcasing that not only do people feel good to know that something has gone on to have a new life or second life with someone else - they also found that sharing creates connection, improving mental health and strengthens local communities. “Taking care of each other and supporting one another is an important part of being human”. Olio takes the best of tech and melds it with the best of humanity. (And we can personally vouch that it works, as users of the app for a while now - it's simple and yes you do feel good about getting involved in redistributing ‘stuff'). And Olio doesn't just work on a personal level, there's a B2B component too - working with over 60,000 trained volunteers across the country and local retail stores to redistribute what would become food waste into the local community. It's a win - win - win. There's no doubt that you'll love this entire conversation - and Tessa's answers to our timeless 3 questions are GOLD. Our call to action to you is listen and try the app yourself visit https://olioex.com/ it truly is a game changer - (and it's not just about food - as you'll hear - you can share and redistribute anything you no longer need). Huge thanks to Tessa for coming on the show and sharing her wisdom and her important work and impact. Something we can all be a part of. Go do it. Rescue and redistribute here: https://olioex.com/ ______________________________________________________________ You'll find the Podcast on all the usual pod platforms - and if you love it, do share it and spread the word. Up until now, there has been a disparate and distinct lack of easily accessible information available to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and non-binary community on the practical processes and implications of changing title and gender marker. Are there any preferred drones for measuring the height and width of buildings? What factors should pilots keep in mind when purchasing a drone? Today's question is from Jannik, who is performing photogrammetry missions and for his requirements needs to measure the height and width of buildings, however he would like to know what drone is best suited for his requirement, a drone that can effortlessly provide accurate measurements We begin our response to Jannik by going over the many requirements of performing a mapping mission and how pilots need to consider them for ensuring quality deliverables. We then delve into accuracy of mapping missions and what factors influence accuracy and how pilots need to keep them in mind while purchasing a drone. We also delve into the technical aspects of performing linear and vertical measurements using a drone and how pilots can effectively use their drone to perform such measurements. Lastly we discuss about the most important driving factor of mapping missions - the client's requirements, and how knowing this can help navigate through legal requirements while performing measuring missions.
