Dr. Thigpen offers insights on the Manual for Spiritual Warfare Chapter 1: God is infinitely more powerful than the Devil and his hosts. So why doesn't God prevent them from their evildoing on planet earth? We could ask a similar question about why God doesn't stop human beings from committing wicked deeds. Evil's continuing presence among us is a mystery we can't fully figure out in this life. Nevertheless, we can say this much: God allows evil because He's powerful enough to bring out of even the greatest evil a much greater good. Evil is all around us. From hatred, envy, and jealousy to sex trafficking, dealing deadly drugs, school shootings, divorce, and even gossip. Evil wreaks havoc in countries, communities, and families. This is not the way it's supposed to be, but it's the way it is in this life under the sun. Last week we addressed the question, “Why Does Evil Exist?” (click to view that sermon). Here is a quick review:Why Does Evil Exit? ·     God did not create evil. Everything he created was good (Gen. 1:31). Evil is the absence of goodness.·     God did not create us to be robots. He gave both angels and man free will (Gen 2:8-9, 15-17)·     Some angels rebelled against his will (Isaiah 14:12-14, Ezekiel 28:12-18).·     Adam and Eve rebelled against his will (Gen 3:6)·     Sin and evil entered the human race (Rom 5:12)This week we will address: “Why Does God Allow it?”Why Does God Allow Evil to Continue?God gave free will to the angels, and Satan (and his followers) rebelled and were thrown down from heaven (Isa 14:12-14; Eze 28:12-18). Adam and Eve fell for Satan's lie (Gen 3:6), and sin and death became a part of the human experience (Rom 5:12).The world “under the sun” that Solomon wrote about is not the way it's supposed to be. Sin has invaded our planet, led by Satan—the father of all evil. Jesus called Satan “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31). Paul calls him “the prince of the power of the air” (Eph 2:2). Ephesians 6:10-12Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.Satan at work and man infected by sin - this is not the way it's supposed to be. So, why doesn't God put a stop to it?In life under the sun, as soon as God stops evil, he stops free will - reducing man to robots. For instance, murder (a great evil) is the end of a process made up of lesser evils. If every lesser evil were taken away, man would be stripped of free will. Why doesn't God judge and remove from the earth all who commit sins? No one would be left! Ecclesiastes 7:20Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. God did not create us as robots, nor does he turn us into robots. In a real world with real choices, the same natural laws that allow us to build cool resorts and develop medicines can be abused to make weapons, bombs, bullets, and illicit drugs.Sometimes God allows evil or sin to test and grow us. James 1:2-4Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.Romans 5:3-5…We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Sometimes God allows evil to discipline us. Hebrews 12:5-8“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. God sovereignly uses evil to work his perfect purposes.Genesis 50:20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. The book of Ecclesiastes needs to be read backward. Life under the sun doesn't always make sense, but the answer is always Jesus! Ecclesiastes 12:13-14The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.Love and evil intersected at the cross. Jesus paid sin's penalty fully and finally. One day, in God's sovereign timing, he will call time on this world. Evil will be abolished, and those who know Jesus will enter eternal life.Revelation 21:3-4And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”DAILY DEVOTIONAL WITH RON MOOREGet Ron's Daily Devotional to your inbox each morning; visit biblechapel.org/devo.LIVING GROUNDEDLearn more about how you can grow deeper and embrace the foundational truths of the Christian faith with Living Grounded. Are you suffering now? Is someone you love in a huge storm of life? Trying to walk forward in times of hardship can seem impossible.  Yet, with God, all things are possible.  He is the "fourth man in the furnace" - if you remember the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three young men who were sentenced to die by burning as told in the Book of Daniel - when viewed in the fiery furnace, there was a fourth man with them.  It was the Lord.  He is the fourth man in all of the "fiery furnaces" of life that we go through.   This is a podcast about enduring suffering and doing it in triumph.  If you need hope and encouragement, it is in these words.  A woman who endured great suffering and who now encourages others is mentioned in the podcast.  Her name is Wendy Wallace.  If you want to visit her website, you can find it here. After 49 years and 63 million dead, the Supreme Court finally overturned Roe v. Wade. Do you have a constitutional right to a dead baby? Finally, the Supreme Court has answered properly… NO. However, despite this good news, there is still much work to do, as now the decision goes back to the individual states. As Christians and concerned citizens, what do we do now? In this episode of I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist, Frank addresses the following questions: What did the Supreme Court actually do and what does the constitution say? What does this decision tell us about the importance of voting for pro-life presidents? Have Christians set up a theocracy? What about my body, my choice? How to make the case for life! Oh, and what would Satan actually say about the Supreme Court decision? The Babylon Bee's microphones were in Satan's press conference after Roe v. Wade went down. Politicians and citizens on both sides of this issue can no longer hide behind the excuse, “Well, the life issue doesn't really matter because the Supreme Court has tied our hands.” Well, they just untied them. We must make a case for our position, and we need to do it now. As women of faith, it's not unusual or uncommon to have seasons where we question God. Whether we're experiencing disappointment or grief or we feel utterly broken, the first words to escape us are “Why God?” and “Why do bad things happen to good people?” In this podcast episode, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender talk about the times we live with battered faith and a diminishing loss of hope in the God we serve. They draw countless examples of men and women from the Bible who doubted God, struggled with their faith, and yet still came out on the other end with a restored heart.  During the times when you feel your faith wavering, don't forget that God cares enough to listen to our cries and frustrations. He doesn't love us less when we doubt Him—He'll be patient while we pound on His chest. If this describes how you're feeling, we encourage you to be honest with Him, pray for clarity, and remember all the good He has done and will continue to do. Finding hope is possible. Quote of the episode: “ God would draw me with him into eternity, into that time where question and answer would become one.” —Elie Wiesel Resources: —Read Clay Jones' book, Why Does God Allow Evil? For us to have a robust free will, there must be an amount of divine hiddenness, or what John Hick called “epistemic distance.” Divine hiddenness is the teaching that for humans to act out of free will, God's existence (or presence) can't be too obvious. Not surprisingly, this is a doctrine that many Christians misunderstand and over which skeptics howl. Many Christians ask, and even sometimes complain, that God should make His presence more apparent. Skeptics complain that if God really loved us (in other words, if God were really a good God), He would make His existence unmistakable. But the Lord absolutely doesn't want to do that. Why? Because the Lord doesn't want us to feign loyalty. As Clay Jones wrote in his book, Why Does God Allow Evil?, God could have designed the universe so that when we looked up, even if we were indoors, we would always see a Giant Flaming Sword, and if anyone rebelled against God, that Giant Flaming Sword would immediately cut him in half! Omnipotence could easily do such a thing. But how many people would be Christian in such a world? All of them! Everyone would, at the very least, feign loyalty. But how many true worshippers would you get in such a world? You don't get true worshippers in that world. Worship, like love, must be uncoerced. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Clay Jones about his article in the 44:4 issue, entitled, “Four Types of Divine Hiddenness of God”.For a special limited preview of this print article please click here! https://www.equip.org/article/four-types-of-divine-hiddenness-of-god-special-limited-preview/To read the article in it's entirety please subscribe to the print subscription and get it as your first issue now. An atheist offers what he sees as the best arguments against God. I admit ahead of time that this is mostly low hanging fruit. But I also would say that this sort of atheist reasoning is so prevalent that it needs to be addressed. That being said, this stuff is pretty bad. I want to offer a breakdown of this atheist's article which is perhaps a pretty serious commentary on some of the problems in pop-atheism. Playing a video game called Injustice helps Fr. Mike explain the real answer to why God allows suffering. In Injustice, Superman becomes a totalitarian dictator in his attempt to try and eliminate evil. Batman tries to tell him, in trying to eliminate evil he has ceased to do good, because without the freedom to choose evil, we don’t really have the freedom to choose good either. Couldn’t God do better than Superman though? Couldn’t he just fix everything by bringing us back to the Garden of Eden? Anyone who is a parent knows that doesn’t work because God’s children—us—would just mess up again. So what does God actually do? He doesn’t eliminate evil. He draws close to us in the midst of evil. He suffers a painful death. He descends to the depths of hell. He doesn’t take away suffering. He transforms it and redeems it by entering into it. This led St. Paul to say: “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Colossians 1:24). St. John Paul II said in suffering we receive a sliver of the Cross. Our suffering matters because Christ’s suffering matters and we are his body. All we have to do is tell God to use our suffering. Nothing given to God is ever wasted, so give it to God.

CrashCourse, an informative YouTube channel boasting 10 million subscribers ended up in our radar for their misguided claims (to put it subtly) about Christianity, arguments for God, ontology of God, logic of God etc. We understood that it was critical to respond to such gravely incorrect and preposterous allegations, especially given that it comes from such an influential channel. CrashCourse claims that there are core and fundamental contradictions with the existence of an omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent God and evil in the world. Why would God allow ‘so much evil' if He has some purpose? Why are there non-human sufferings like Covid-19? Why are we inheriting the ramifications of what Adam and Eve did? Tough questions? Dr. Clay Jones confidently asserts they are not. Is he right? Does the problem of evil not possess challenge to the Christian worldview? Since it is a safe generalization to say that every person who has ever lived has experienced evil in some form or fashion, including pain and suffering, answering the problem of evil is a formidable task. Due to the breadth and depth of the effects of evil, the problem of evil is not only the number one intellectual obstacle to belief in God, but also the number one emotional obstacle to belief in God. The emotional problem of evil, an aversion to a God who would allow suffering and evil, is even more difficult to answer due to the power of the emotional objection. Essentially, the answer to both the intellectual and emotional problem of evil, though sounding simplistic, is the Christian God. Whereas the intellectual problem of evil elicits a philosophical response with cold, hard facts and argumentation, the emotional problem requires a counselors response with a genuine concern for the skeptics suffering. Many times, we may hurt inside, anger with a God who would allow us or others to suffer. This problem may be one that momentarily undertakes no argumentation at all but requires a loving friend who will be a compassionate listener. However, this is also a time when apologetics and our study of the truth can make a striking impact, both for the sufferer and for the one grieving with him or her. This Postmodern Realities podcast episode is a conversation with Journal author Mary Jo Sharp about her Christian Research Journal feature article Addressing the Emotional Problem of Evil: Why Christians Hope https://www.equip.org/article/addressing-emotional-problem-evil-christians-hope/ We would also like to invite you to subscribe to the Journal and join our team of print subscribers. In a world with so much pain and suffering, it can be difficult to imagine that a good God could exist. And if He does....why does He allow so much evil in our world? This is an issue that not only keeps some people from believing in God, but it's an issue many Christians wrestle with as well. On today's podcast, Author and Biola University Professor Clay Jones tells us about his new book, Why Does God Allow Evil, and helps us wrestle with this difficult question.
