I'm excited to revisit this episode with Kalika Yap, a serial entrepreneur, inventor, intentional mother, and business leader. Kalika is from more humble beginnings. She came from a big family born in the Philippines in the time of Martial Law that then moved to a low income community in Hawaii. Growing up, she had strong influences from her mother who is a teacher and her father who is an entrepreneur. Along with her husband, she now imparts these family influences or “Ohana” and a focus on “Core Values” to her two daughters. We covered a lot of ground in this interview and I felt like I filled my E.P.I.C. Life Toolkit with powerful strategies: to focus on values, develop keystone habits, and consciously choose a life of service. I left the conversation inspired by Kalika to pursue our entrepreneurial dreams and empower other women to do the same, all while being a present and intentional parent. We encourage and invite you to share this episode with everyone who needs to hear it.
We each have a definition of success that is unique and dynamic; how success looks to us today could be different from how it looks in a month. And we know, achieving that success is virtually always the making of one person, ourselves. We tend to tell ourselves that we don't deserve what we want, we are not worthy, nor good enough. We rarely stop to think that to succeed, there must be alignment in our lives; there must be joy, love, self-compassion, integrity, good health, and not simply a seven figure bank account. In this episode, we chat with Kalika Yap, the ideal guest to answer today's question, Can I Really Have IT All? Kalika is a serial entrepreneur, author, podcast host of two different shows, speaker, inventor, and mom. She is also the CEO of the award-winning brand agency Citrus Studios, CEO & Founder of Orange & Bergamot, CEO of Luxe Link, Founder of the Waxing Company, MyCommerce investor, and Board of Trustee at Seven Arrows Elementary School. Kalika is one of the Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Los Angeles Chapter leaders, currently serving on the EO Global Communications Committee. She is the host of The Juicery Podcast and EO Wonder Podcast. The daughter of immigrants who struggled to make their way in the United States, Kalika earned her Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from the University of New York. She worked as a journalist at CNBC and Bloomberg, getting several minutes 'on-air' -- her definition of success at the time. But an unexpected shift in her life would leave her homeless, far from her friends and relatives, and with no other choice than to embrace the process of radical acceptance and allow herself to pursue the joy and adventure of thriving in uncertainty. Kalika kindly shares her vision of success, happiness, acceptance, courage, integrity, openness, and much more in this enlightening conversation. They discuss how important it is to learn and practice focus and concentration, and how it can transform your life through your relationships with other people and with yourself. Tune in now! Timestamped show notes 01:43 Kalika introduces today's guest, Dandapani. 02:14 We were never taught how to focus but tell our children to do so. 03:11 Dandapani shares that the #1 tactic on how to concentrate is to only do one thing at a time. 05:30 You can be an entrepreneur but still be focus. 06:40 Dandapani discusses how he knows if a person is distracted, even when he cannot physically see the person. 09:12 People get distracted because they don't know what they want. 16:14 In monk school, they look at the mundane things that happen around their day as opportunities to develop qualities that can help them grown and become a better person. 19:32 Coming up with your purpose in life can define what your focus will be. 20:00 To know your purpose, you have to get to know yourself. Key takeaways Concentration must be learned and needs to be practice. If you don't learn it and you don't practice it, you won't be good at it. Those that help others be successful. 08:08 Warren tells an anecdote about a particular incident in Los Angeles. 09:41 His purpose in life is to improve the human condition. Key takeaways People who live to do a higher purpose, actually perform better than those who do not. No success in life compensates for failure in the home. Great leaders don't need employees. Tami Holzman, first-time author of the best-selling book "From C-Student to the C-Suite" joins Kalika Yap on this episode of Wonder podcast to share her story of being a "C" student to a successful author, angel investor, and women entrepreneurship advocate. Tune in to the latest episode of Wonder podcast! Timestamped Show notes 01:00 Kalika Yap introduces today’s guest, Tami Holzman. 01:25 Tami Holzman recalls being an average student and having Harvard as her dream school. 02:02 She wrote her book “From C-student to C-suite” from a humorous perspective as there is a lack of fresh approaches to business guides and relationship-building. 02:30 She encountered an article from Forbes magazine that said 85% of getting business is because of emotional intelligence, which inspired her to write about her insecurities instead of her successes. 04:34 Tami describes herself as a perfect 7, better than average but far from perfect, and there's room for improvement. 05:10 The journey of writing the book was very hard because she had to evaluate the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of herself. Tami used to be very critical of herself so writing the book was quite therapeutic for her. 07:00 She remembers a time where she thought of herself as a failure because a company she built became a failure. She was so engrossed in the company that it felt it was her identity, an extension of herself and she took the failure very personally. 11:22 Tami talks about her beginnings in the entertainment business as a talent agent, to when she landed a role in the male-dominated space of sports. 17:51 Tami’s last mentor was her 18-year old intern. She believes that mentors come from all walks of life and that you can learn from anyone and everyone. 21:00 Having great relationship skills and understanding people is just as valuable as getting an A in school. Emotional intelligence is a much better standard to predict career success. 22:49 The hallmark of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Being able to understand who you are is really important and also being able to understand how other people perceive you. 24:20 The stronger your relationships are with people, the more you'll benefit. The weaker your relationships are the harder it is to get your point across. Key Takeaways You don’t need to be perfect to be successful. Showing vulnerability is a strength. If you're not being vulnerable, you're not taking chances. Women should invest more, especially in other women, to create more opportunities. It's CyberLaw and Business Report's 2018 Cyber Thanksgiving Special and for the 6th year, we celebrate the Wednesday before Thanksgiving with a special show featuring a guest panel discussing websites/apps they are grateful for, recommendations for Giving Tuesday and maybe even share what they will be cooking for Thanksgiving. Pete Kronowitt and Benét Wilson return from last year and Kalika Yap joins us for the first time.
I’m excited to share this episode #22 with Kalika Yap, a serial entrepreneur, inventor, intentional mother, and business leader. She’s received tremendous recognition for her accomplishments, including being honored by the Anti-Defamation League, serving as a panelist with Magic Johnson on an Urban Economic Forum hosted by the Obama White House, and currently leading as the President of Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Los Angeles Chapter. Kalika is from more humble beginnings. She came from a big family born in the Philippines in the time of Martial Law that then moved to a low income community in Hawaii. Growing up, she had strong influences from her mother who is a teacher and her father who is an entrepreneur. Along with her husband, she now imparts these family influences or “Ohana” and a focus on “Core Values” to her two daughters, 10 and 8 years old. She's currently starting a company with her daughters, prompted by a school project, called Conscious Kids, a mindfulness resource for children. Believing that children have eyes all around and a unique perspective, she engages her daughters in defining the core values of their business and encourages them to explore their creativity. Her current mission, through her branded commerce start-up, Orange and Bergamot, is to help 1 million businesses succeed and in turn create 1 million jobs by developing amazing brands.
