Barbarian is a very good movie and we talk about it. Okay, now on to the important stuff. For the last six years, I Have Some Notes has been privileged to be part of the Alberta Podcast Network, the brain-baby of founder Karen Unland. Karen's love for local art built a platform for so many of us to stand on and gave us the opportunity to fund our passion projects. Although the APN ended its operation in March, will be forever grateful to Karen as well as Fawnda Mithrush and Breanne Byrne for their tireless work promoting ours and so many other great Alberta-grown shows. We're also thankful to all our dedicated sponsors whose contributions were crucial to keeping the lights on. But as we say goodbye to the network, a new chapter begins for I Have Some Notes. Today we are excited to announce our show is now sponsored…by YOU! Yes, we have started a Patreon to keep the armchair screenwriting going for many seasons to come. So, if you are able, we humbly ask for a tiny sum of $4 per month. It would mean the world to us to have your support! But that's not all, we have also started a new Discord Server! Let's face it, Twitter is a tire fire and not a great place to have fun, nuanced discussions about movies. Come join us where we'll be talking about all the latest Hollywood buzz and maybe holding rewriting some movies on the fly. It'll be a great time, so come join us! Become an Armchair Screenwriter at www.patreon.com/ihavesomenotes! Join our Discord Server!

With Covid-19 rolling through all of our lives right now, we had a really basic question: how are you holding up? For this bonus episode, we held a live call-in show to find out. Karen Unland, Marlena Wyman, Jaya Chauhan, and Allan Farrell called in.
Karen Unland is a master negotiator. She convinced a financial institution to give her $500,000 to create her own podcast network. This was not an easy journey as it was a two year process!!! Karen has turned her creativity for podcasting into a successful purposeful business that is taking Alberta by storm. This is another interesting story get your eardrums ready. It's a weird way to end a show, but then again with Anyone Can Whistle everything has been a bit odd. Karen Unland and her daughter Elizabeth (from the podcast That's a Thing?!) join the show to discuss With So Little To Be Sure Of. They also talk about the difficulty with love songs, whether this song is inconsistent with the characters singing it, and they try to guess how many Tony Award nominations the show received.
Love is a theme in many songs. For Hero this might just be the first time. Karen Unland returns to discuss young love and whether Sondheim is able to capture it effectively. Especially considering that he didn't find love until he turned 60.
Some People is a song sung by a desperate woman. Or, perhaps, it could be looked at as an ode to the entrepreneur. At any rate Karen Unland returns to the show to discuss how Rose's first song of the show informs her character and how–depending on the performer–it can change the interpretation we have of them.
Super excited to have Karen from Alberta Podcast Network join me to talk NFL Pro Bowl picks, Tight or Bite, and share 1st (and only) experiences. My strategy of Tight or Bite chosen purely by Fantasy points meets its match in Karen's thoughtful review of player's character and ability…guys, I had Kareem Hunt and OBJ…!!! The wait is over. I Have Some Notes is back for its 3rd season of movie improving and we're returning with a series of firsts for the show. The first first is our first Bond film: Moonraker. Yes, the Bond movie that never heard the phrase "less is more." Italian murder caskets? Sure. Super boats? Two please. Space? You bet your ass! Second on the list of firsts is no Colin. Mr. MacIntyre is off being a new daddy and will miss a few episodes, but the talented Scott C. Bourgeois has volunteered to sit in his chair and keep it warm. The last, but probably most important first is that this is our first episode as a member of the Alberta Podcast Network powered by ATB Financial. We're stoked to be joining the Network and its fleet of amazing shows sailing through the digital airwaves. Big thanks to Karen Unland for all her hard work putting the network together and helping to make our passion project more sustainable. Alright, enough preamble. Please join Scott, Gregg, Anita and the hilarious Liam Creswick in fixing James Bond: The Moonrakening!

The second half of our chat with Jeff Samsonow is all about his indie media production adventures. We learn about the company started by he and Sally Poulsen, The Edmontonian Media Co. Some of the things discussed: Comedy that punches up, other talented Edmontonians, and advertising in this digital age. Where did our guest go after AMI? Jeff shares his adventures with Postmedia and Capital Ideas. He also mentions gastropost. Karen Unland and Brittney Le Blanc started Capital Ideas according to our guest. Jeff also adds how he got to know them through McEwan and 630 CHED. Karen runs Seen and Heard in Edmonton, the Edmonton podcast meetups and is trying to start a podcast network. The Edmontonian Media Co. was born from the work Jeff & Sally Poulsen put into The Edmontonian. Their first production was called, wait for it, Sick Day. The first short was inspired by the cold opens they did on the 6 part series The Edmontonian Presents that aired on Shaw TV. Jeff tells us about Startups, another short they made featuring Karen Unland, Owen Brierley of EDAC and former guest Marty Chan. The Edmontonian Media Co. also produced Obstacles. Jeff worked with Christian Zyp during Startups. The most recent production from Sally & Jeff was the amazing Underdogs of Comedy. They were inspired by The Meltdown. Simon Gorsak and Brett McCrindle often host the Underdog Comedy Show. Dion Arnold started the show, originally. More comedians in the area mentioned: Clare Belford, Carina Morton & Simon Glassman. Speaking of places to find comedy in Edmonton, try The Underdog, The Empress Ale House and El Cortez. Keep your fingers crossed, Jeff & Sally have submitted The Underdogs of Comedy to AMPIA’s web series award category. Jeff’s newest venture is Edmonton Quotient, telling the stories of Edmonton in an online magazine. Chris always makes it weird and tells a story of companies reaching out to advertise in porn. Chris also makes a pitch for Someday in February. Learn more about podcasting in Edmonton at seenandheardyeg.com. Thanks so much for listening. Really grateful that Jeff Samsonow took time to drop in at Chris’ place to do the podcast. Be sure to check out Edmonton Quotient and The Underdogs of Comedy. Questions, comments? OK, so you’ve created a great project and now you want some publicity. But how do you reach out to the news media? There’s a right way and a wrong way. Are you sprayin’ and prayin’? Are you issuing a press release addressed to everybody you happen to know and lots of people you don’t know (and no one in particular)? Well, good luck with that! This episode finds Marvin interviewing former newspaper journalist and now podcaster/blogger Karen Unland to discuss how to pitch delightful and insightful stories to the new and traditional news media who can potentially help spread the word about your particular creative project. One little win at a time. You don’t have to know everybody at every level in the media to generate some interest in your work. You just need to know someone who knows someone and can put in a good word for you and produce for them a great looking or sounding pitch of how you can help that media outlet please their readers, viewers and followers. Karen outlines and describes the simple steps to take. The rest is up to you. It wasn’t discussed in detail during the interview, but you may also be interested in learning that Karen is pulling together a regional community with regular meet-ups to discuss how to leverage relationships and promotional opportunities among podcasters/bloggers. You could start a similar grass roots movement in your own city. Find new friends and allies. Authentic relationships and follow-through are two key success factors, whatever your creative endeavour. You can learn all about Karen’s undertaking at seenandheardyeg.com You can do this. Take the first step. Repeat as required. You can do this. Too lazy to write a blog post on the Patreon page, Paul & Chris meet to discuss exciting new updates to the show. Promotional swag, sauce packets and secretive episodes are coming your way. Not to mention our tremendous backlog of live episodes to publish for downloads. This special episode is brought to you be quantum mechanics. Remember when we had a t-shirt drive? (You can request Cotton Bureau print more, if you wish.) Paul goes searching for domains for the insanely long iTunes link on hover. Should we get dot soy? You want shorter content? Yeah. We can do that. We’re going to start doing sauce packets. When the ventilation goes out at work, Paul plays clips from Anchorman. Chris says a future episode in April will feature a discussion about developing VR with Aaron Clifford. Modeled on the Chicago Podcast Cooperative, Edmonton media superstar Karen Unland is busy putting together the Seen and Heard Podcast Network. Thanks for attending our general meeting? Check us out on Twitter and Facebook. Feeling generous, throw some love at us on Patreon or review the show on iTunes. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon
Earned media remains valuable, whether it’s for your clients or for your own company. What are some of the strategies we can use today during Edmonton's recent changes in local media to have our stories told? Karen Unland discussed how this will change the way communicators pitch stories. No matter who is being pitched to, it’s more important than ever to think like an entrepreneur. Karen Unland is building her own media company after many productive and instructive years in mainstream newsrooms. She spent 14 years at the Edmonton Journal as a reporter and in various editorial roles, then left to teach and consult. In 2012, she came back to Postmedia, which owns the Journal among other newspapers, to co-found Capital Ideas, a community of business owners helping business owners by sharing what they know. Now she is embarking on a new venture, the flagship of which is Seen and Heard in Edmonton, a blog and a podcast about bloggers and podcasters in our maker-filled city. The podcasting community keeps growing. Karen Unland has had her fingers on the pulse for months now, and she's doing a great service to fans of homegrown content. But credit must go to the creators, of course, for having the courage (or folly) to start their own shows. We invited two of those courageous (or foolish) people onto the show this week. Phil and Robyn Wilson have recently started their own podcasts, which we think officially makes them a podcasting power couple. Phil's new show is called Off Menu — all about food producers, chefs and growers in and around Edmonton; Robyn's is called The One — all about how couples first met, and what keeps them together. Give us all a listen, and throw a subscribe their ways as well!
An introduction to Seen and Heard in Edmonton, a podcast about bloggers and podcasters in Edmonton. In this episode, host Karen Unland gets her feet wet, sort of, with the assistance of Mack Male, aka mastermaq, creator of ShareEdmonton.
What's the best way to wrap up your 6th season? Why, with a variety show performed live in front of an audience, that's how! The show featured some incredible entertainment, including: new music from local a cappella group Apocalypse Kow stand-up comedy by Edmonton's own Clare Belford an interview with former online editor and head of Capital Ideas from the Edmonton Journal Karen Unland a hilarious panel of nerds — including Samantha Power, Scott C Bourgeois, Devin R Bruce, Joel Forth, and Karen Unland — defending their favourite Star Trek series in what's being called Battle of the Trekses
Last week, Scott and I were invited to appear on Breakfast Television to cap off the show's almost-always-annual BT Bloggers Week. We followed in the footsteps of several other fantastic bloggers who appeared throughout the week, including Mack Male and Karen Unland, The Kitchen Magpie, and Nicole Rowan among several others. We had a really great time hanging out with Jespo and the BT crew. I can't think of a nicer, more fun group of people to spend three very-early-morning hours with. We even got to chat with an inspiring young lady named Hannah Alper, who's touring the country right now talking about child poverty and animal rights. You can view the segments Scott and I were featured in here, here and here. Special thanks to Jason Halbauer for reaching out to us and asking us to be on the show! Hope you enjoy the episode!

I don't know if you've heard about this, but newspapers are basically effed. They can't continue to sell ads and print their product while other "media" are starting to move their content increasingly online. The printed paper will likely die with the last baby boomer (sorry Mum and Dad, but I read my news on the computer or on my phone). So Scott and I decided to find out exactly how effed newspapers are, and what they're doing to mitigate their, um, effedness. Thankfully, before we set out on our quest, Karen Unland, the Edmonton Journal's online editor contacted us and suggested it would be a good topic for the show. We agreed. In our thirteenth episode (woooo! dun, dun, DUN) we try to sort out what direction news media is moving in and what some of the models could be for continuing to run "newspapers" online, while paying people to, you know, provide news and analysis. Listen, learn and love, friends! Would love your feedback in the comments and on iTunes as well!
