Serial killer Ted Bundy would abduct a victim from a parking lot. But who did he take? In the media, the victim would simply be named, followed by a comma… and another name.Kathy Kleiner Rubin has seen her name, followed by a comma, in many narratives about Bundy. He attacked her in her sorority house in 1978. She has a message for the media: “Understand that there were two parts to the story.” In this visit with hosts Bridgette Stumpf and Lindsey Silverberg, Kathy also shares her message to other survivors of trauma: “Walk away from what traumatized you, and look forward to doing things, even if it's walking to an island that you'll never reach. But take baby steps way out in the ocean.”Tune in for more of Kathy's insights. There are many myths that have built up around serial killer Ted Bundy. The public imagination indicates that he was handsome and charming, a supposed ladies man. The reality is far different. He was a loser. Consistently, Ted Bundy wasn't charming. His murders were brutal and never the result of seduction or charm. He was violent and ruthless. He's been played by superstar actors in movies which lends him a persona of glamour. But author Kathy Rubin Rubin Kleiner is dispelling the myths and legends of popular culture. Her book, A Light in the Dark, is about the victims of Ted Bundy and their stories are not about his charm, his charisma, or his good looks. They are stories of a brutal, violent, and desperate creep. And Kathy Rubin Kleiner knows this first hand. Kathy herself, survived being attacked by Ted Bundy. Kathy Kleiner joined Wake Up Tri-Counties this week.

For collegiate women, joining a sorority offers the possibility of philanthropy, sisterhood, and community. This was especially true at Florida State University, where the young women of Chi Omega had a strong bond with one another. Nights at the sorority house often felt like a slumber party, as girls gathered together to gossip, paint each other's nails, and borrow clothes. However, that sacred sense of safety and community was broken one January night in 1978, when a monster attacked. Author and motivational speaker Kathy Kleiner shares the story of how she survived an attack from Ted Bundy at the Chi Omega sorority house and discusses the impact the nightmare had on her life. Later, she describes testifying at Bundy's trial and coming face-to-face with the murderer who killed her friends. In her book, A Light in the Dark: Surviving More than Ted Bundy, Kathy Kleiner details how she survived lupus, Ted Bundy, an armed robbery, and even breast cancer. She spreads her message of hope and light to others dealing with trauma. It's January 15, 1978. Kathy Kleiner is a student at Florida State University and is asleep in her room at the Chi Omega sorority house. Unbeknownst to her, a serial killer named Ted Bundy has discovered the sorority house's back door is accessible—the lock is broken. That night, he broke into the house, murdered two of her sorority sisters, savagely injured Kathy and her roommate, and changed so many lives forever. Today, Kathy gets to tell her story. It is harrowing and terrifying, and please be forewarned that this conversation contains graphic descriptions of violence that is very difficult to listen to. Bundy was ultimately convicted of murder in Florida and executed by electrocution on January 24, 1989; his total victim count is unknown, but it numbers over 30 women across seven states from 1974 to 1978. Kathy is the first confirmed survivor of his to write a book, and it is a beautiful one, though the subject matter is ugly. As Kathy put it, she didn't just want to survive—she wanted to live. And that she has. This book is her offering to honor Bundy's victims who never got the chance to tell their story. One of the most, if not the most, powerful conversations I've ever had.   A Light in the Dark: Surviving More Than Ted Bundy by Kathy Kleiner Rubin

Kathy Kleiner Rubin, author of A Light in the Dark: Surviving More than Ted Bundy. This is the first book by a confirmed survivor of Ted Bundy, and the only memoir to challenge the popular narrative of Bundy as a handsome killer who charmed his victims into trusting him. Kathy also gives perspective of what the survivors of the Idaho murders withstood and how they are coping. (5:56) Cheshire schools were in secure lockdown mode yesterday, after receiving a threatening email. Jeff Solan, the superintendent was on with Chaz and AJ to explain what the lockdown means, and what's being done to find the origin of the threat. (11:05) Connecticut Attorney General William Tong was in studio this morning to talk about Amazon, airlines and the McRib. Instead, the Tribe overwhelmed the phone lines with questions, so he was more than happy to speak with them directly. (20:44) What are the chances? Chaz and AJ asked the Tribe to call and share stories of crazy happenstance, and right out of the gate it was a winner. (32:09) When it comes to American serial killers, few names come to mind before Ted Bundy. Kathy Kleiner was on to share her story of surviving one of his vicious and brutal attacks, and then testifying during his trial. (42:08)

Kathy Kleiner was just 20 years old when the infamous Ted Bundy entered through the back door of her sorority house at FSU armed with a piece of firewood he had found outside. Bundy had just escaped from jail for the second time when he committed the brutal attack on the Chi Omega house. Though Kathy and her roommate survived, their lives were forever changed, and this assault went down in history as the one with the bite mark evidence that helped convict Ted Bundy. But Kathy's survival story didn't end there -- she went on to survive lupus, breast cancer, and being robbed at gunpoint. We talked with her about all of that plus what she thinks about true crime fandom, and Bundy fangirls in particular. Title: Pulling Out Your Strength with Kathy Kleiner On today’s episode of Fast Lane with Sara Jayne, Sara speaks with Kathy Kleiner. Kathy tells her story about growing up with Lupus, going to college, and surviving an attack by Ted Bundy. Kathy speaks about her recovery process, and how she had to pull deeply on her inner strength to persevere and not let that moment define the rest of her life. Episode Highlights: Kathy recounts her childhood, remembering her father, and learning that her father passed away when she was 5. Later, Kathy’s mother remarried and her step-father adopted her and she took his last name. When she was in sixth grade, Kathy fell ill and was eventually diagnosed with systemic Lupus at 13.Kathy did an experimental chemotherapy treatment for her Lupus when she was 13.With your Lupus, did you experience more pain or exhaustion?Do you continue to have issues with Lupus now?Kathy does not want to let Lupus hold her back. After you graduated from high school what did you do?Kathy went on to study at FSU and even joined a sorority. Can you explain the traumatic experience you went through while living at the sorority house? In January 1978, Kathy went to a wedding and reception at a small chapel and was planning to go to a movie with friends afterwards. After getting back to the house, Kathy decided to stay home and study instead. That night, Kathy was first woken up slightly by a quiet noise like the door sliding on the carpet, and later, she was woken by a louder noise of a trunk in her room being hit.Kathy saw the silhouette of a person standing over her, and when she was hit her jaw was shattered in 3 places. When her roommate came over, Ted also attacked her with the same piece of firewood. When their room became light from a car’s headlights, Ted became scared and ran out of their room. The next thing Kathy remembers was a police officer next to her and feeling safe again. What time approximately did the attack occur?Who found you? And how did they find you?Kathy’s roommate was able to get up and walk into the hallway and one of their sorority sisters found her.Three weeks after the attack, Kathy was taken to an oral surgeon who had to re-break her jaw so it would heal correctly.Kathy continues to have pain in her jaw to this day and had surgery as recently as 2 years ago. What is your message to someone who has survived a traumatic experience? 3 Key Points:Kathy was diagnosed with systemic Lupus at a young age which had a significant impact on her childhood. When she was in college, Kathy was attacked by Ted Bundy while in her sorority house.Kathy does not let the attack define her.Resources Mentioned: Fast Lane FacebookFast Lane on Apple PodcastsKathy: Twitter

In the early hours of January 15, 1978 serial killer Ted Bundy entered Florida State University’s Chi Omega sorority house through a rear door. Beginning at about 2:45 a.m. he entered the rooms of Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy who did not survive their attacks. In an adjoining bedroom he attacked Kathy Kleiner, breaking her jaw and deeply lacerating her shoulder; and her roommate Karen Chandler, who suffered a concussion, broken jaw, loss of teeth, and a crushed finger. Kathy, who later testified in his trial, described seeing only a silhouette of a man wielding a club. Tallahassee detectives later determined that the four attacks took place in a total of less than 15 minutes, within earshot of more than 30 witnesses who heard nothing. Our July pick for The Morbidly Curious Book Club was "A Light in the Dark: Surviving More Than Ted Bundy" by Kathly Kleiner Rubin and Emilie Le Beau Lucchesi.Join us if you're curious: themorbidlycuriousbookclub.comAbout the book: "In January 1978, I slept in my bed at the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University as Ted Bundy stalked nearby. He grabbed an oak log from a stack of firewood, slipped through a back door with a broken padlock, and headed upstairs. He began twisting doorknobs. Room 9 was open, and he quietly and quickly killed one of my sleeping sorority sisters. Across the hall, he found another unlocked door and murdered again. Then, he turned the knob to my bedroom and found it was open. I remember the attack vividly. Bundy bashed me once in the head with the log and then attacked my roommate. He heard me moaning and came to finish me off. He never let his victims live. But he stopped suddenly when a bright light filled the room. He fled the sorority house and the light disappeared.Bundy wasn't my first brush with death, and he wasn't my last. I've long been a survivor. I was born into a Cuban American family in 1957 in Florida. I had a happy childhood until I received my first death sentence at the age of thirteen.
