#043: From Nonspeaking to Professional Speaker - Dr. Kerry Magro's Autism Communication Journey

Autism Outreach

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2021 27:01

In this interview, Dr. Kerry Magro, one of the first speakers who is also autistic,  shares his communication journey.  Kerry was non-speaking at 2.5 and received an official autism diagnosis at 4. Despite not speaking in full sentences until 7 and facing a variety of sensory challenges, the support of his loving family and over 15 years of a multitude of therapies helped him overcome many of his barriers. All of these paved the way for his achievement in a degree in sports management before he realized his true passion for disability advocacy and received his Ph.D.  We discuss how, with the right support in place, anyone can find their voice.Kerry describes his early speech behavior as non-speaking versus non-verbal because of the sounds he was making. While they weren't words, these sounds turned into pronunciations and through speech therapy broke ground to start communicating, in any way possible. I work with a lot of students who are not yet spontaneously communicating, and it is always my focus to create budding communication. Kerry describes the two biggest things that helped him grow from non-speaking to a professional speaker were speech therapy and music therapy. When you receive a diagnosis of autism for your child, sharing this information with them can seem scary or overwhelming, especially when a child is young. Kerry shares how his parents told him after a fun game at school where the teacher told him he was special and wanted to know why. His parents told him that he has autism and that it meant he learned differently, but that he was no less of a person than others. While that may seem simple, Kerry says it was life-changing for him as he grew older and began to understand his disability, sit in on IEP meetings, and become an advocate for himself. Leaving the support of the elementary, middle, and high school and moving on to college is quite a transition, whether you're a typical learner or not. Kerry says for him, the best support for him as he entered college was understanding his accommodations, understanding his needs to succeed academically. For him specifically, he needed more time on tests, a private room due to sensory needs, and a note taker due to his dysgraphia.  He is actually working on a book about the transition from high school to college with advice and experience from many autistic voices. As a professional in this field, my goal is always to support my students, but sometimes it can be hard to know what language is preferred. Kerry talks about the importance of letting neurodivergent individuals and self-advocates identify themselves. It's really not up to a professional to dictate the preferred language of someone else. Many are taught to use the label, a person with autism, but Kerry prefers the language, autistic individual.  He also stresses that parents and professionals should stop using functioning labels. The best way to describe your child is to list their strengths and weaknesses. Autism is such a wide spectrum, so person-centered approaches are essential to the autism community. If you've met one autistic individual, you've met one.Be on the lookout for Kerry's contribution to the book Life After the Lockdown: Resetting Perceptions on Autism, just released this September. This fall, he is gearing up for many speeches for National Bullying Prevention Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month, as well as the spring release of his book Autistics on Autism for World Autism Month, in which 100% of the proceeds will go into his scholarship fund. #autism #speechtherapy What's Inside:Dr. Kerry Magro's communication journey. The importance of speech and music therapy.Non-speaking to professional speaker.Telling your child their diagnosis. Autism and transitioning to college.Understanding preferred language and labels.

This week features a very special back to back, two podcast episode release as Annette speaks with two guests who were interviewed for a recent Today Show Article called “Autism Wars.” Today's episode features Annette's interview with Kerry Magro, who is an award-winning national speaker, a best-selling author and a role model in the disability community.  Annette & Kerry speak about the “Autism Wars” article, disability in the workplace, bullying, unity and inclusion.   As a child, Kerry was non-verbal at 2.5 years and diagnosed with autism at age 4.  Kerry was not able to speak in complete sentences until age 7 and went through years of therapy to get where he is today.  Kerry has a doctorate in Educational Technology Leadership and is currently the CEO and founder of KFM Making a Difference which is a non-profit corporation that focuses on disability advocacy and housing.     Autism Wars Article   While most people don't like the “Autism Wars” title of the Today Show article, thinking “war” is too strong, Kerry does feel there has been a divide in the community for quite some time between parents of autistic children and autistic adults.  There are those on the autistic adult side that feel that parents of autistic children share too much and parents who feel that autistic adults don't share enough to allow them information they feel they need.  There needs to be unity, inclusion – both sides working together rather than separate.  The article did have a positive note for Kerry that many parents reached out to him about finding advocates and building friendships between parents and autistic adults.   Social Media Sharing   Another portion of this autistic divide is on sharing on social media. Some autistic adults feel that some parents overshare videos and photos on social media of their autistic children, basing this on the child being too young to consent.  Sharing in smaller, local groups for educational purposes can be beneficial but sharing to Facebook in larger groups might not.  Kerry mentions there is toxicity in social media and sometimes it is best to think before you share anything especially if it may cross a privacy line.   Disabled in the Workplace   Kerry also speaks about the disabled in the workplace.  Statistics say that up to 90% of autistic adults are either unemployed or underemployed.  Kerry notes there should be a better onboarding process for disabled individuals possibly offering a one-day job trial or having a speaker talk to them about their experiences.  Annette asks what smaller businesses can do to be more disability inclusive in their hiring process.  Kerry mentions to make sure your business keeps up with ADA accommodations for disabilities, having past employees offer testimonials and making sure your job listings note that you are open to hire anyone.  Unfortunately, there are a few job listing sites that will automatically keep out resumes that list words regarding “disability.”   Bullying   Bullying is another topic that Kerry speaks of often to parents. Kerry mentions we need to realize though that bullying does not just affect school age children.  There is a rise of bullying lawsuits in the workplace and people with disabilities being taken advantage of.  Everyone should have a safe environment to work in. October is National Bullying Prevention Month as well as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.     Final Tips   Kerry leaves us with his tips for what he would say to parents with autistic kids and disabled adults about coming together, being in unity.  Kerry feels each side is allowed to disagree but should take more time to listen and be more constructive in nature.  Don't talk over each other.  Possibly find a neutral mediator to listen to both sides of the arguments and offer their thoughts. Disability groups are already facing challenges from outside the community.  They should come together, work together and be stronger together.   Contact Kerry   If you would like to learn more about Kerry Magro, you can find him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.  To reach out to Kerry about speaking at your event, please click here.  To find out more about Kerry's books, click here.   Also, to learn more about the groups Annette mentioned in her intro, click each one:  Perkins School for the Blind and SMILE Mass. For Dr. Kerry Magro, a TV consultant, public speaker, and best-selling author, you leave behind stereotypes every time you show a realistic portrayal of the many different kinds of people with autism. Representation in media matters to him, and that’s why he works so hard with other self-advocates to share an accurate and varied picture of autism in television and film.
