Johanna Warren joins LaunchLeft to talk about her new album, Lessons for Mutants, and share her thoughts about the creative process. Johanna is also involved in writing a play, The Buckeye, and will do a live workshop in Bristol, England, in February. In addition, Johanna speaks boldly about how she has found energy and creativity in nature and discusses rebelling against parts of society that put deadlines and expectations on artists and people in general and how that can compromise your well-being. The episode closes with a live performance of her song "Lessons For Mutants" from the Garden Sessions at PULP studio in Gainesville, Florida. [09:07] Johanna is working on a musical called The Buckeye. [10:25] Discussion of what sparks creativity and taking time for yourself. [23:56] The state of the music industry and how Covid gave Johanna a time of quiet reflection. [29:40] Johanna describes her collaboration with local farmers and herbalists. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The effect of losing someone resonates in the art that you create. It's essential to be mindful of how you feel and what you spend time on. It's good to take a break when your body speaks and says slow down, even if it affects a schedule in place. Put your well-being first. The music industry doesn't value new talent. Instead, the focus is on those who have become stars; consequently, they get the notice and the benefits. RESOURCE LINKS Podcast - LaunchLeft Album - Johanna Warren Instagram - Johanna Warren Facebook - Johanna Warren Twitter - Johanna Warren Soundcloud - Johanna Warren Bandcamp - Johanna Warren BIO: As a little kid, I knew who I was: a wild magical creature who delighted in the gifts of the Earth and the mysteries of the universe - feasting on red clover and honeysuckle, grinding berries between stones to make "potions," thatching faerie huts with slabs of damp moss, talking to bugs, singing to birds, drawing channeled images of interdimensional angels, and happily passing long afternoons with my face pressed in the dirt watching golden light dance through blades of grass. Then, as most of us do, I forgot. The magic was conditioned out of me and replaced with corn syrup, plastic and The Pledge of Allegiance. And I got very sick, and very very sad. I was slapped with a long string of diagnoses, including Type 1 diabetes. My adolescence and young adulthood was a horrorshow of illness and medications that caused side effects for which more medications were prescribed. After ten years of this nightmare, I realized I had no idea who I was without the antidepressants, birth control pills, antibiotics, acne medications, antiandrogens, prescription migraine drugs and insulin injections I had been taking regularly since before I was old enough to question any of it. I started experimenting with phasing out pharmaceuticals and exploring "alternative" (ancient, sacred) healing modalities: herbalism and folk medicine, acupuncture, Qi Gong, meditation, fasting. I started working on biodynamic farms and learning directly from plants. Getting back outside to be in direct communion with the natural cycles of the Earth, as I did so naturally as a child, has been absolutely vital to my personal healing. Since most of my illnesses were stemming from toxic foods, getting directly involved with the source of my nourishment was pivotal. I can't overstate how difficult it was to get off the pharmaceuticals, but I was determined — I knew in my bones that there was a better way. Over the course of a harrowing year, I weaned myself off the insane slew of drugs I'd been on for years — all except insulin, which I still currently rely on to help manage Type 1 diabetes (a profound teacher I am continuing to learn from!) The next major event in my training as a healer came In 2012, when I was in a fatal car crash. At the moment of the collision, I had a lucid experience of being saved by the angelic form of my best friend, who had died a year prior: I felt his presence as a warm bubble of white light that shielded me from injury. By all accounts, given the circumstances and severity of the impact, it was miraculous that I lived at all – but in fact I was left without a scratch on my body. The car crash was an initiation. It cracked me wide open. It was like I was catapulted into a different dimension where magic was real again. Suddenly I was talking to dead people, seeing colors I'd never seen before, feeling like I could start a fire with the light and heat coming out of my hands. My work as a healer has been about finding my way home, back to the wise child who knew who she was, and helping others do the same. Remembering that we are all deeply connected. Reclaiming our magic. Dancing for the trees. Singing for the squirrels. Fasting in the wilderness sometimes. Learning from plants. Learning from people. Listening within. Falling more deeply in love with myself/ You/ Nature/ God every day. As I continue to walk the healing path, I come again and again to the understanding that pain, suffering and disease are invitations: portals to awakening. Our bodies are constantly communicating to us in poetic metaphors densely encoded with information, and they can teach us everything we came here to learn. All we have to do is listen.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“For every $1 of aid Africa gets, $24 is taken out. We have to address something deeper, something more systemic, but we don't want to talk about that. We want to talk about food waste, composting. Those are treating the symptoms of the disease, not the root. ” In this episode, we revisit our past conversation with Loren Cardeli, the co-founder and Executive Director of A Growing Culture, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, advancing a culture of farmer autonomy and agroecological innovation. A Growing Culture is a farmer-centric organization that believes the key to sustainability lies in returning small-scale farmers back to the forefront of agriculture. As part of this growing movement, Loren and his colleagues promote farmer-led research, extension, and outreach, helping to create sustainable, self-driving futures. What is the Pyrocene, and why do we need to tell a new narrative around fire? How did colonial forms of conservation disrupt Indigenous cultural burning practices, increasing the likelihood of eruptive, destructive fires today? In light of wildfire season beginning again on the west coast of Turtle Island, we are resharing this pertinent conversation (ep281) with fire historian Stephen Pyne. About Stephen Pyne Stephen Pyne is an emeritus professor at Arizona State University and mostly a fire historian, who has written fire histories for America, Australia, Canada, and Europe (including Russia). On today’s special episode, join the talented Johanna Warren near her home in Wales for a private concert. Enjoy her plant-inspired lyrics as she is surrounded by the sounds of the forest. Johanna recently lent her voice to Netflix series ‘The Midnight Gospel’ and released her fifth solo album Chaotic Good on Carpark Records. Beyond her musical artistry, Johanna is a mystic, herbalist, Reiki Master, and advocate for the healing powers of Nature. For more from Johanna, catch her upcoming livestream concert on October 1. Tickets on sale now! “I’ve been thinking of life as one big roleplaying game,” Johanna Warren offers when asked why she chose to title her new album after a Dungeons & Dragons reference. “There’s chance, there’s choice, and there’s alignment—what forces in the universe do I choose to align myself with?” Chaotic Good is Warren’s fifth full-length album and first for Wax Nine/Carpark Records. It represents a moment of rupture in the singer-songwriter’s career as she transitions away from the quiet, folk-adjacent work that defined her early solo albums with a bold statement piece that demonstrates the breadth of her ambition. Here, Warren flits between crushing admissions set to spare piano solos and muscular declarations of independence that have more in common with grunge acts of bygone years than anything we’ve heard from Warren in the past. “The last few years I’ve had an urge to change my name, or create some alter-ego,” she says. “But I’ve come to realize that ‘Johanna’ is already just a character. We think we know who we are based on what’s already happened, but we’re allowed to make new choices.” The oceanic, soothing single “Bed of Nails” illustrates that realization perfectly when Warren sings: “I tried a little bit too hard to be myself/It turned me into something else.” Recording Chaotic Good was an exercise in self-reinvention. Warren decided to produce the album on her own, borrowing recording equipment from a friend to do much of the preliminary tracking alone in a garage. She enlisted a few key collaborators to fully enliven her vision, most notably former Sticklips bandmates Chris St. Hilaire and Jim Bertini. On the raucously resilient “Part of It,” Warren is joined by her musical brethren as she addresses a noncommittal narcissist and—a trademark of Warren’s work—the narrator’s complicity in her own suffering: “Don’t look at me like I’m the one holding you back/and I won’t look at you like you have something I lack.” Adding to the album’s dynamism is the fact that it took shape over the course of four years in studios across the United States while Warren was touring her most recent albums Gemini I and II. Warren uses words like “patchwork” and “scrapbook” to describe Chaotic Good; it is a collection of sonic snapshots that transport her to specific places in time with each listen. “This album is about learning how to be with myself after a lifetime of codependent relationships,” Warren says. You can hear that especially well on “Twisted,” which finds her confronting a former lover, and ultimately, letting them go. “I’m a warrior, but I give up,” Warren howls, the surrounding production warping and distorting as her raw vocal crests to an acidic scream. Though her lyrics are resigned, her delivery is anything but. It is a moment of total abandon, when the multitudinous aspects of a personality coalesce to form something at once dazzling and monstrous. “Chaotic Good is a metamorphosis,” Warren says. “It’s my phoenix moment. Everything I’ve done before was just building the funeral pyre.” Johanna Warren is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who began her career as a singer/songwriter in the Brooklyn-based psych folk band Sticklips. The group released two albums before disbanding in 2012, and after a stint performing backup vocals for Iron & Wine, Warren self-released her debut solo album, Fates, in 2013. The album prompted her to tour nationally under her own name, and since then, she’s led a nomadic existence, calling cities across the United States home for short periods of time. Over the past few years, Warren has toured alongside Mitski, Julie Byrne, and Marissa Nadler, but a life on the road hasn’t slowed her output. In 2015, she released her sophomore album nūmūn to acclaim, propelling her to the forefront of artists to watch in the second half of the decade. Warren dedicated the spellbinding collection of acoustically-driven songs to the phases of the moon and to the divine feminine — forces of great power and consequence that are all-too often overlooked. The following year, Warren announced a twin set of albums released on her own label Spirit House, which promoted a radically inclusive, artist-friendly ethos. Each of the songs on Gemini I corresponds with a song on Gemini II, which debuted later, in 2018. The two albums are in conversation with one another, offering up a character sketch of dueling personalities vying for acceptance. To contrast nūmūn, which was rendered using a simple palate of acoustic instruments, the arrangements on Gemini I and II integrated a wide array of instrumentation and more palpable percussion, furnished with help from a small cohort of Warren’s longtime collaborators. Following the release of Gemini II, Warren embarked on her extensive Plant Medicine Tour, during which she invited local herbalists, farmers, and activists to come and share resources with attendees about alternative remedies. In the spare moments between tour stops, Warren recorded her latest album in studios across the United States. Entirely self-produced, Chaotic Good is Warren’s first album for Wax Nine/Carpark and it is her boldest to date, finding her in a state of transition as she introduces listeners to a new phase of her artistry.

Johanna Warren is a musician, artist, and healer. Her newest album, Chaotic Good, came out on May 1. In this sweet and vulnerable conversation, we dive into the shadows and gifts of the creative life, touching on the karmic drives that inform self-expression, and how her understanding of her most challenging experiences has shifted as she has healed her body and spirit, releasing damaging beliefs and stepping into stories of magic and wisdom. From discipline to self-annihilation, musical ancestors to herbal wizards, this is a tender exploration of personal catharsis and the call to service as an artist. You can find her at JohannaWarren.com, her music at JohannaWarren.bandcamp.com and on IG @johahanna. More podcasts where podcasts are found, MauraJames.com and IG @maurajames. “I Know Kung-Fu… Panda.”We walk about Baby Grimes-Musk, alien languages, and Brian makes Luke (aaaahhh) FREAK OUT! We talk about weird coincidences, deja vu, and living in a simulation. Luke plays a clip from his interview with LA Priest where they talk about Soft Hair, Britney Spears, and Tiger King. We talk about living in the city vs. living in the country. Luke tries to teach Brian how to pronounce Bon Iver. We talk about manipulative men and carrying the weight of the world. We talk about reinventing yourself as a new character. Our guest, Autumn Freeman on Instagram @justaddganja, has complex PTSD from prolonged childhood abuse, sexual assaults and an attack where she was stabbed in the face and chest. She never recovered from any of the trauma. So it compounded and got worse. She developed a Panic disorder and Major depression- a few suicide attempts and several hospitalizations over the course of her life, and it’s been really hard. Through brain scans done by top neuroscientists, they found that her brain had gone through so much trauma that is was damaged similar to that of a traumatic brain injury. In 2006, she was introduced to Psilocybin mushrooms and MDMA. “At first psychedelic use was purely recreational. But after my first experience it was so exciting and enlightening that I started digging into Huxley and all the pioneers. I started to be more intentional with it. Over the course of maybe about 6 months, I was doing Psilocybin and MDMA self-assisted therapy” with her boyfriend. “During that time period, I was the most functional I had ever been in my entire life”. Since recording this podcast, Autumn and her family have uprooted their lives and moved to Oregon in pursuit of gaining safe access to cannabis. In her immediate family, she has to treat autism, epilepsy, PTSD, TBI, and anxiety disorders. In her experience, cannabis and psilocybin containing mushrooms 100% help to both alleviate the symptoms and heal the damages caused by these illnesses.Thank you so much every one. Thank you for pushing on and continuing to be a human in this life. Thank you Autumn Freeman for being a guest on this show and sharing your experiences of trauma and healing and lack there of. Spring Break is upon us, and we are embarking on an adventure. We will be slaying beasts in the fantastical world of novelist Laini Taylor (that have surprising real world parallels), exploring the haunted house of YouTube superstar Sunshine Girl, traveling to SXSW to discover infectious new bands, and trekking to the grand opening of the Portland Japanese Garden. The Portland Japanese Garden Unveils World-Class Expansion - 1:23The Portland Japanese Garden was already considered one of the best in the world, but now it stands to become a cultural institution on a whole other level. After undergoing more than seven years of planning and months of construction, the garden is opening its new expansion and Cultural Village on Apr. 2.The Eugene Ballet And Composer Kenji Bunch Find Beauty In The Snow Queen - 6:57On Apr. 8–9, the Eugene Ballet Company will premieres a work years in the making: a new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s "The Snow Queen," with a modern score by Portland-based composer Kenji Bunch. You might recognize the tale: it was the inspiration for Disney's "Frozen," and Bunch gives it a cinematic treatment.Slaying Demons (And Cliches) With Best-Selling YA Author Laini Taylor - 13:02Portland author Laini Taylor dreams the types of dreams that you want to get lost in — majestic desert journeys to forgotten cities, heroes with dark secrets, tender first kisses between godesses and men — and you're not alone. Her early collaboration with her husband, the illustrator Jim Di Bartolo, "Lips Touch," was a finalist for the National Book Award, and her "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" trilogy is an international best seller. This week, she released the first book in her newest series, "Strange the Dreamer," about an orphaned young librarian who also has big dreams. She'll talk about it with Sara Grundell of the YA website Novel Novice at Powell's at Cedar Hills Crossing on Apr. 6. Oregon's Biggest YouTube Sensation Is A Girl, Her Mom, And A Household of Ghosts - 23:04In 2010, Oregon actor Paige McKenzie anonymously released a series of videos on YouTube called "The Haunting of Sunshine Girl." They were DIY, Blair Witch-style episodes following a charismatic 16-year-old who wanted to prove the existence of ghosts to her mom. With no promotion whatsoever, the series blew up and now has had more than 280 million views, making Sunshine Girl one of the most successful YouTube stars in the country.Since then, McKenzie inked a deal with the Weinstein Company for three books and a TV show. The first two books have sold more than 200,000 copies, and the third, "The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl," comes out Apr. 4. She will read and sign at Powell's at Cedar Hills Crossing on Apr. 5 and Voodoo Donuts Too on Apr. 13.Blitzen Trapper Spins Their Narrative Rock Into A Sci-Fi Rock Opera - 32:51Blitzen Trapper is one of the tightest rock bands in Portland, and now the members have partnered with Portland Center Stage to transform their story-rich songs into an evening length musical event. Called "Wild and Reckless," they’re billing it as a "futuristic vision of Portland's past.” As part of our What Are You Looking At series, we went to opening night and discovered a production overflowing with expert musicianship but coming up short on plot. opbmusic's SXSW Recap: Bands We Can't Get Out Of Our Heads & An Exclusive Session with Conor Oberst - 41:17The opbmusic staff saw some 150 bands in four-days at Austin's monster music festival, South by Southwest, and music director Jerad Walker stops by to share some of his favorites, including A Giant Dog, Jay Som, and Portland folkster Johanna Warren. In a lucky turn of events, they were able to sit down with indie royalty Conor Oberst from the folk band Bright Eyes. Oberst spoke with Jerad Walker about the process for his new album "Salutations" and his work with supergroup Monsters of Folk.
Portland singer/songwriters Catherine Feeny, Annalisa Tornfelt, Tahirah Memory, Johanna Warren, and Haley Heynderickx join our 12-piece jazz ensemble on original arrangements of their songs, October 29th at The Old Church at 7:30 pm. Curator Catherine Feeny talks about our guest artists.
