Ben Cook aka Young Guv is a musician, producer and manager. He is also lead singer of the legendary Toronto hardcore band No Warning. Ben sat down with us to discuss the common narrative of going to New York and returning to Toronto, the negative effects of constantly touring, routine, getting into character for No Warning shows, the Hellfest DVD, getting into hardcore as a teenager, people hating 'Ill Blood' when it came out, New Ho King, performing private showcases for record executives in LA, meeting Rick Rubin, partying with Paris Hilton and Avril Lavigne, signing to Linkin Park's record label, living in the same building as Good Charlotte and Rick James, Ben plays us a voicemail of Fred Durst trying to sign No Warning in 2003, performing 'Run' with Ghostface Killah, Luka Magnotta, Josh & Ben meeting at American Apparel in 2008, joining Fucked Up, Vice Magazine, The Bitters, the 'Lo-Fi' era, getting a bad Pitchfork review, his label Bad Actors, Summer 2016, Jimmy Prime, Yacht Club, Debby Friday, musical ADD, mixing albums in a Honda Element, trying to sign Kali Uchis before she was famous, No Warning reuniting, having a vision and more! This week's show gives you an an exclusive invite to the coolest indie nightclubs: Club Yellow Brit Road, an indie disco of the mind. We're keeping finals season blues at bay by pumping up the energy on the dancefloors, on the kitchen floors, in the library, your ears, wherever. To be honest, the podcasted version this week is just 30 second clips of me shouting out the CFRC Funding Drive (we gotta stay on air), so it's worth finding the full show in archives (I worked real hard on the transitions between songs, go check it out), but to keep you entertained, I've tried to have good transitions on the podcast too. Oakland California's The Goods have just announced the release of their debut self-titled EP on Dandy Boy Records with an accompanying video for the song “David Jones Is Dead.” The Goods combine big guitars, huge hooks, and sweet British Invasion-style harmonies into a distinctive power pop tapestry on their debut. Self-produced in the band's own studio in Oakland, CA, The Goods' debut EP draws on decades of hooky punk and power pop from the 1960s through the 1990s. The three song 7" (with an exclusive fourth digital track) combines classic influences and timeless sounds with a fresh and playful energy. The lead single and video “David Jones Is Dead” calls to mind the band's songwriting influences both new and old; Redd Kross, Young Guv, Tom Petty, Matthew Sweet, The Jam, Green Day and Cheap Trick. Reflecting on the process of writing “David Jones Is Dead” singer and guitarist Rob Good had to say, “I set out to write the shortest song I possibly could, all killer no filler, every bit of fat around the edges trimmed off. Lyrically, I was thinking about all these rock and roll icons that are now dying, and how their death brings up so many emotions - not only remorse for the loss of the person, but also nostalgia about the good times you had with their music and the friends you enjoyed it with. Ultimately it's a celebration of that music and those good times.” Avoiding retro-revivalism, The Goods' music is earnest and unironic, with just enough grit and muscle to balance its sugary sweetness. Dandy Boy label owner Bobby Martinez describes the connection between himself and singer/guitarist Rob Good, “I'm a big power pop fan and he was writing huge power pop songs. Not in a bleached hair/ leather jacket/ Buzzcocks way or a straight college radio/ 90's alt way- but somewhere in between. There's an element of Redd Kross camp over Cheap Trick timelessness that adds this level of fun and cheekiness. It never feels too serious or posturing yet avoids going full on cornball cartoon band. It's completely self aware and doesn't fall into some retro revival affectation. Rather than trying to duplicate classic power pop from the late 70's or 90's “left-of-the-dial” underground, they manage to sound organic. It's power pop by guys who grew up learning their instruments by listening to Green Day and the Descendents and playing in punk bands. Guys who spent their formative years with Lemonheads and Jam CDs in their cars.” Photo credit: Corey Poluk D I S C O V E R Twitter: https://twitter.com/the_goods_music Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/the_goods_music/ Apple: http://itunes.apple.com/album/id/1690163263 Bandcamp: https://dandyboyrecords.bandcamp.com/album/e-p This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop Go get the 1 hour mini Documentary on Lowest of the Low's Classic Album Shakespeare my Butt at https://thelowdoc.gumroad.com/l/SMB

Tonight we bid very fond adieus on the show for Tuesday nights, as we transmit Prince Paolo's final broadcast contributing to our Under The Radar indie and underground weekly soiree. Paolo has been a stalwart on the show for the past three years and has been one of the very key contributors to making The Drop what it is here three years down the road. This week, we followed the Yellow Brit Road all the way up to the north of England, to the county of Lancashire. Between old music, local dialect, accent, culture (and chips) and poetry, this was possibly the most fun show I've ever done, and I hope you enjoy it too! The artists played this week were Lancashire folk bands The Houghton Weavers, Oldham Tinkers, Lancastrian actor, comedian and musician George Formby, Lancaster based 90's feminist punk band Angelica (whose lead singer Holly Ross now plays in psychedelic punk duo The Lovely Eggs), and new bands TV Face, and Ivy from Preston. The dialect poem read on the show was Eawr Sarah's Getten A Chap, by Sam Fitton. The Oldham Tinkers set the poem to music, which can be heard here. This week's Masala Chai artist was Young Guv, the pop rock project of singer-guitarist Ben Cook, better known as lead vocalist for Canadian hardcore bands No Warning and F*cked Up. His song Cold In The Summer can be heard here. This week's (mostly complete) playlist can be found here. Catch the Yellow Brit Road live on radio or cfrc.ca every Sunday from 8 to 9 PM. Have feedback, suggestions, requests or want to submit your music? Email the show at yellowbritroad@gmail.com or tweet @YellowBritCFRC.

No new information on the Midtown helicopter crash as the NTSB continues their investigation, but the incident has stoked local officials to criticize the conditions that led to the crash: Carolyn Maloney, the Congressmember who represents the district where the helicopter came down renewed her calls for private transit and tourism helicopter flights to be banned over the city. After a deadly helicopter crash atop the Pan Am building helipad in 1977, flights to helipads in Manhattan were banned, but no new restrictions have been put in place despite multiple deadly crashes around Manhattan by helicopters and small planes. In a statement on Representative Maloney's web site, she says: "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high." Senator Chuck Schumer also called on the FAA to require helicopters be equipped with flight data recorders, and cited years of recommendations from the NTSB that the FAA should mandate flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Schumer noted how the lack of flight data will now impede the investigation. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added: "After last week's helicopter crash in midtown, the FAA should immediately reconsider the recommendations federal transportation safety investigators have urged since 2011 and take steps now to implement these basic safety features. Flight data recorders provide critical information to help prevent future crashes, and I urge the FAA to act quickly to ensure black boxes are in every helicopter." A memorial service was held for the helicopter pilot, Tim McCormack, in Poughkeepsie, NY. This week finally brought the sad confirmation that a swimmer has been found dead after going missing during a race in the Hudson River. Renowned AIDS researcher, Charles van der Horst, had been competing in the Eight Bridges Hudson River Swim, a 120-mile, week-long competition that was scheduled from June 8th to June 15th, with swimmers covering about 17 miles per day between Hudson River bridges. On Friday, June 14th, Charles had disappeared beneath the water near the George Washington Bridge and did not resurface. His disappearance occured at the end of that day's swim, which had begun 15.7 miles away at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard and NYPD boats began searching immediately, but it wasn't until four days later that his body was discovered near Fort Tyron, north of the GWB. In a statement from the van der Horst family, Charles is described as living life to the fullest and will be remembered for his work in social justice and in the medical field. He immigrated to the United States as an infant from the Netherlands, and was the son of a Holocaust survivor. As a professor of medicine, he provided care to HIV/AIDS patients, contributed meaningful research concerning the diseases, and volunteered at a free clinic after his retirement. When Charles disappeared, he was under the watch of safety crew in kayaks following each swimmer, and another participant describes the extreme care taken to ensure the safety of each swimmer, so it was unclear how this tragedy took place. Last week I told you about the very first roller coaster that was modeled after a mine cart, but 92 years ago on June 26, 1927, The Coney Island Cyclone wooden roller coaster opens to the public A baby doll wearing a "Crawling Dead" t-shirt was realistic enough to be officially pronounced dead by first responders after an early-morning 911 call on June 18th. A jogger spotted the horrifying scene of a baby lying face-down in the grass at 215th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside, Queens and police quickly arrived to seal off a crime scene. It wasn't until hours later that officials announced it was actually realistic doll that they had earlier pronounced dead without physically inspecting it. In a statement, the FDNY described the doll as having "discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death" as it was painted gray and blue to simulate loss of oxygen. Once the doll was physically inspected, the ruse became known, and the doll was found wearing a shirt that said "Crawling Dead", presumably a play on the classic horror film "The Walking Dead". The police have opened an investigation into who placed the doll and if it was intended as a prank.
