One of our all time favorites, Strand of Oaks, returns to the eTown stage this week. This dynamic, gifted writer and singer (and one of the genuinely nicest people you'll ever meet) brings his full band this time around. Coming solo to play with the eTones and Nick for the rest of the musical portion of the show is talented young Anna Burch of Detroit, Michigan. And, for this encore broadcast, we'll have an eChievement Award story of a young man who's come up with a truly unique and natural way to involve kids of all ages in cleaning up the polluted waters of New York Harbor.

*Anna’s Bio:* Anna Burch is a Registered Nurse, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and mom of three (including twins). She loves to help women breastfeed with confidence. *Anna’s Story:* * Ever since Anna was 12, she knew she wanted to be a nurse and work in women’s health. * Originally, she wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse. * When she graduated, there were more nurses graduating than the demand. * Instead of getting a job in a hospital, she went to work in an OBGYN office. * In this job, she worked with a lot of postpartum moms and found that a lot of people struggle with breastfeeding and that there is a lot of misinformation out there. * During this time, Anna didn’t have kids and struggled with fertility. * She started her education just after finding out that she was pregnant. * After her daughter was born, she got certified and launched her company: Prenatal Insights. * Her business has grown slowly since she’s focused on being a Mom at the same time. *Why is there not more information if women have been breastfeeding for so long?* * In past generations, the upper class wouldn’t breastfeed. They would hire a wet nurse to feed their baby. * For some reason, it was looked down upon to breastfeed. * Even more recently, formula companies advertised and a lot of people stopped breastfeeding and transitioned to formula. * There still is a stigma about breastfeeding. * Breast milk is an incredible substance and provides so many nutrients. * Anna isn’t against formula. There are many reasons why a mom would choose to go with formula, and there are a lot of good formulas out there. *Why are we seeing movements to make breastfeeding more acceptable?* * Because of the internet and social media, there are a lot of platforms for people to support breastfeeding mothers. * It is now legal to breastfeed your baby in public places in all 50 states. *How to deal with people that don’t want you to breastfeed in public?* * Do whatever makes it easier for you to breastfeed. * If people around you are uncomfortable, it’s not your problem. It’s up to you if you want to make changes to help them be more comfortable. * Don’t let people shame you or pressure you. * It’s more important that your baby gets fed than that other people feel comfortable. *Tips for expecting moms* * Get some education. * Expecting moms prepare for so many things. Often, we work on creating a perfect nursery. * Just as important as this, is preparing and deciding what you are going to do about breastfeeding. * Breastfeeding is almost like a full-time job during your babies first year. You need to be trained for this “job.” * One resource available is Anna’s online course: https://prenatalinsights.com/online-courses/ - *10% off the Course! BFW10* *Any Breastfeeding is a success* * Many women feel like a failure if breastfeeding doesn’t work out, or if they don’t do it as long as they would have liked. * Any breastfeeding that you do is a success. * It’s okay to mourn the loss of breastfeeding, but anything you did was a success. *Follow Anna* * Website ( http://www.prenatalinsights.com/ ) * Online Course ( https://prenatalinsights.com/online-courses/ ) *10% off the Course! On today's episode I talk to musician Anna Burch. Originally from St. Joseph, Michigan, Anna began touring with her band Frontier Ruckus at the age of 18, and eventually went on to play in the Ann Arbor-based Failed Flowers. But it wasn't until she was almost 30 that she started to write and record her own music. Her first album as herself, Quit the Curse, was released by Polyvinyl in 2018, and her latest If You’re Dreaming, was just released at the beginning of April. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

Esta semana suenan Bombay Bicycle Club, Anna Burch, Pongo, !!!, Moaing, La Roux, Villagers, Okay Kaya, Nathaniel Rateliff, The Men y Airbone. Y para completar el programa suena Suzane como recomendación del Instituto Francés y Fake Dj remezclando a Second.
One of our all time favorites, Strand of Oaks, returns to the eTown stage this week. This dynamic, gifted writer and singer (and one of the genuinely nicest people you'll ever meet) brings his full band this time around. Coming solo to round out the musical portion of the show is young Anna Burch of Detroit, Michigan. And we'll have an award interview with a young man who's come up with a truly unique and natural way to clean up the polluted waters of New York Harbor.
For the sixth episode of the mini-series “Female Fronted is not a Genre,” the Arts, Interrupted team sat down with Detroit-based singer-songwriter Anna Burch.

After more than 10 years as a member of bands like Frontier Ruckus and Failed Flowers, Anna Burch made her solo debut with this year's Quit The Curse. The album channels smart, jangly indie-pop while cataloging the in and outs of romantic entanglements. Burch and her band play the songs "Quit the Curse," "2 Cool 2 Care" and "Asking 4 a Friend." Recorded on June 20, 2018 at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri. Engineered by KE Luther and Andy Coco.

And we're back! Our first new mix of the new year includes gritty guitar rock from the band Bethlehem Steel, a sweetly seductive, pop earworm from singer Anna Burch, and an epic breakup song from Lucy Dacus. We've also got a stunning new cut from the sprawling rock group Typhoon (you can read about and listen to their new album here). "Empiricist," from the band's upcoming album Offerings, is one in a series of meditations on how memories shape who we are — and what happens when you start to lose those memories.Plus, singer Jonathan Meiburg of the band Shearwater and the duo known as Cross Record join together for a new project they're calling Loma. The group's upcoming, self-titled debut is full of mystery and wonder.
