Today we're just a couple of harmless eccentrics in our dotage as we provide listeners with another classic chewing episode with strong dirt components. Its true that Molly has come a long way, but she still gets weepy as she tries to shirk her professional duty while Matthew decides to get rich or die trying. Toxic and poisonous flavors open up to us before we share some accidental origin stories and our failed attempts at palette expansion. Calling all LILYs ! Die Hauptrollen der Bestsellerverfilmung NUR NOCH EIN EINZIGES MAL – IT ENDS WITH US spielen Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, Amy Morton und Brandon Sklenar.
My guest today is Recovering Attorney Lily Lily was my guest on the episode which came out on May 6th – its already had 2,000 downloads and we had some great feedback from that one – if you missed it then have a listen to Lily sharing her story here Lily is a coach these days and one of the things that she helps people with is Relationship Coaching so today we're going to focus on Sober Dating If your romantic relationships have always been lubricated with alcohol then this could be a skill you'll need in your toolkit as you build your alcohol free life In this episode:- Lily's full drinking story can be found on our previous episode which came out in May but she gave us a summary She began her drinking career as a teenager and it continued during her legal career. She became a daily drinker, frequently drinking alone and experiencing blackouts At 37 she reached rock bottom – in fact as she says in her previous interview she had a series of rock bottoms, one of which involved drinking alone in her apartment all weekend She felt hopeless, useless and miserable and finally reached out for some help Reaching out for help is actually the hardest step of all - so if you're worried about your drinking then reach out to tribe sober today – just go to tribesober.com and hit join our tribe and we'll show you how to quit drinking and build an alcohol free life you love So Lily got sober in 2018 and she's been sober ever since – if you want to hear how she did it catch the previous episode As we switched to talking about relationships Lily explained that she'd been shy as a child so as a teenager alcohol helped her to fit in – to feel part of things It helped her to feel prettier, funnier and more vivacious, especially around men As she got older alcohol would always be a major player in her relationships She would drink before the date… which often took place in a bar If her dates didn't drink like she did then that could be a problem Lily believed that alcohol made everything a bit brighter, a bit easier and less awkward – she just couldn't imagine her life without it She certainly couldn't imagine dating without it! During her first year of sobriety she didn't date at all She believed the advice she had heard about focusing on sobriety and avoiding any major life changes during that first year. Major life changes like changing jobs, moving house and of course starting a new relationship Lily had to focus on learning to love and look after herself before she would be in an emotional state to look after someone else She had the insight that she had been using men a bit like she's been using alcohol – the highs of a new relationship giving her a dopamine hit and making her feel good just like alcohol did As Lily moved into her second year of sobriety she went on her first sober date She knew the guy, they both liked and respected each other and they had things in common Although that relationship didn't develop into anything serious Lily felt proud of herself – proud that she had shown up as a very different person By this point she felt so much clearer about who she was, what she wanted and what kind of person she was looking for We talked about the risk of relationships between people in recovery and how they can crash and burn The common struggle may create a bond which means you feel that you've found your soulmate but it makes sense for you both to get that year of sobriety first to avoid any risk of relapse We talked about the dangers of cross addiction and how we can transfer our love affair with alcohol to food or shopping or sex I asked Lily how a sober person should start looking for a new relationship once they had completed their first alcohol free year Apparently there are sober dating apps/websites – in fact a quick google search came up with a list of 8 sober dating apps which I'll add to the shownotes https://resurgencebehavioralhealth.com/blog/8-best-sober-apps-for-people-in-recovery/ Although Lily met some good people via dating apps when she was drinking these days she feels more comfortable getting to know people first via a shared interest or through friends We talked about the best way for sober people to use the regular dating apps and agreed that it's far better to disclose that you don't drink alcohol in your profile – even if you get fewer matches it's far better to know in advance that your sobriety may be a problem for some people! The people who don't match with you because of your sobriety are very likely to have a drinking problem themselves so they would not be right for you anyway! First dates very often involve sitting across from each other eating and drinking but as Lily says an experiential date will take a lot of the pressure off – taking a walk, going to a dog park, going out for breakfast One of her best first dates was a trip to a museum I asked Lily what she had learned from her experience of sober dating She's learned to listen to her intuition – that gut feeling that tells her that this is someone she feels comfortable with… She's also experienced the opposite feeling when she hasn't felt comfortable with someone – had she been drinking she would often ignore that intuition and any red flags which could lead to problems later on in the evening If someone is feeling isolated and lonely in their sobriety the focus should be on connecting with a community rather than focusing on finding a romantic partner – so even if you have been sober for a while if you are feeling lonely then take a look at some online sobriety groups – go to tribesober.com and hit join our tribe if you'd like to try out our international community Sobriety has enabled Lily to turn up for all her relationships more authentically Once we are able to love ourselves we are so much better placed to build a relationship So here are Lilys top 3 tips for sober daters:- Have a solid foundation to your sobriety by experiencing restaurants and bars with friends who are drinking first Have clarity about what you are looking for and how you are going to show up and be prepared to leave the date if you feel your sobriety is at risk Have fun! - keep it light, meet lots of people and remember if a relationship doesn't work out it means the universe has something better in store You can find Lily on her website which is myinternalweather.com – where you can find articles and tips on sober dating More Info Tribe Sober membership – you can join up HERE. Yes, it's the "S-word." Shoegaze...of all the media fabricated sub-genres that we talk about on O3L, this is one of the most polarizing. The term was coined with some derision about the crop of artists that came up in the late '80s/early '90s who spent much of their stage time looking down at their effects pedals. Even many of the bands who are most closely associated with the term rebuke the label. On the other hand, the word conjures up a glorious, beloved sound that continues to resonate with musicians and fans to this day: walls of woozy, beautifully sculpted guitar noise, drowned out but ethereal vocals, dreamy, insistent beats, all bathed in swathes of reverb and echo. The Extended Play (EP) was a format that was well suited for this music, so that's our focus on this episode. While we may associate the heyday of shoegaze with the amazing groups that burst onto the UK scene, its influence spread across the pond. Case in point is our Third Lad this week, guitarist Archie Moore, who spent the first part of the '90s simultaneously in THREE seminal Washington, D.C. area bands who took cues from fizzy UK indie - Black Tambourine, Lilys, and Velocity Girl. If that wasn't enough, Archie and his friends also co-founded one of the legendary American indie labels, Slumberland Records. Velocity Girl was the stuff that '90s indie pop dreams are made of: Named after one of the coolest songs, fronted by the impossibly cool Sarah Shannon, recording for one of the coolest labels (Sub Pop), staples of alternative radio and MTV's 120 Minutes with hits like "My Forgotten Favorite" (also prominently featured on the Clueless soundtrack), "Crazy Town," "Sorry Again," and "I Can't Stop Smiling." We caught up with Archie the day after Velocity Girl's first gig in 21 years at the anniversary bash for legendary D.C. club The Black Cat. They also will be playing the Bowery Ballroom in New York on September 30th before returning to The Black Cat on December 1st. Catch them if you can! Songs: Brett Vargo - 'Didn't Know I Needed This (Until I Needed This)' Velocity Girl - 'My Forgotten Favorite' Black Tambourine - 'Throw Aggi Off The Bridge' Proud members of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Hosts Hannah Brown (@hannahabrown) and Tyler Meredith (@tylermckmeredith) are coming in HOT! We catch up on all things culture and truthfully this episode was a bit of bore after last weeks intro of one H. Duff! We go back into the will they won't they of Fufus and Lily and a wildly quick turn around time for a botanic garden wedding. There was a lot of Bree/Nate drama, which wasn't really our bag BUT Blair pulls out one of her greatest looks EVER at Lilys wedding and we are truly grateful for that. Lots of Serena having to geaux and lots of Carter looking moody, all while Georgina Sparks is a true agent of chaos! XOXO H & T

Sleepyhead recorded their forthcoming sixth album, New Alchemy, at the legendary Boston area recording studio Q Division with esteemed producer and Q Division co-founder Jon Lupfer at the helm. They are releasing the album August 19 as a digital download and via streaming platforms to be followed by a release on 12” vinyl LP. They plan to play as many shows as they can manage after that! New Alchemy features Sleepyhead founders, drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke as well as bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever, who joined the trio in 2004, a few years after the other two had moved to Boston. Many of the songs conjure the subtly infectious laissez-faire sounds of pre-Grunge Indie Rock the embrace early on in their career with a handful evoking classic Laurel Canyon Country-Rock and other 70's FM staples. The title track to New Alchemy was inspired by the exploits of the New Alchemy Institute, a utopian endeavor founded by idealistic scientists in the 1970's in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the hometown of Sleepyhead guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. Sleepyhead was formed in a basement room at NYU's Brittany dorm in the fall of 1989 by drummer/vocalist Rachael McNally, bassist Mike Galinsky and guitarist/vocalist Chris O'Rourke. They released their first 7" single, the Kramer-produced "Play," in 1991 on Picture Book Artifact. Four full-length albums followed, on three different independent record labels. Punk Rock City USA was released by Slumberland Records in 1993, followed by Starduster (Homestead 1994), Communist Love Songs (Homestead 1996), and The Brighter Shore (Sealed Fate 1999). They toured the United States and Europe throughout the nineties, sharing the stage with such legendary bands as Polvo, Half Japanese, Yo La Tengo, The Grifters, The Dambuilders, Nation of Ulysses, Helium, Royal Trux, Antietam, Luna, Versus, The Magnetic Fields, and Dungbeetle. Around the time their fourth album was released in 1999, Rachael and Chris got married, and Mike Galinsky moved on to a successful career in filmmaking. Dan Cuddy (The Special Pillow, ex-Hypnolovewheel) joined Chris and Rachael on bass. With Dan on bass, Sleepyhead did some touring for The Brighter Shore and began writing new songs. Rachael and Chris moved from New York to Boston in 2002 after having their first child. They had another kid in 2005. By this time, they had begun recording a new album, with Dan on bass, with producer Mike Deming (Pernice Brothers, Apples in Stereo, Beachwood Sparks, Lilys), at Deming's famed Studio 45 in Hartford, and subsequently Enfield, CT. In 2004, bassist/vocalist/keyboardist Derek van Beever joined the band, and they started playing shows in Boston, Providence, and New York whenever they got the chance. In April 2013, this new lineup of Sleepyhead went into Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA to record the last three songs for their long-time-coming fifth album, Wild Sometimes, which was released on renowned Chicago indie Carrot Top Records on April 8, 2014. They played a bunch of shows in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast to celebrate the release of Wild Sometimes in 2014, and then started writing a whole bunch of new songs with Derek. In the Spring of 2018, Drawing Room Records released a well-received deluxe double vinyl LP/digital reissue of Starduster and Communist Love Songs called Future Exhibit Goes Here. On this episode of LaunchLeft, Rain sits down with members of the band, Warpaint, Emily Kokal, and Theresa Wayman. Warpaint is an American Indie Rock band formed in 2004, including Jenny Lee Lindbergh and Stella Mozgawa. The band has released four studio albums, including Radiate Like This, which dropped May 6, 2022. Tune in to this episode as Rain, Emily, and Theresa talk about their album-making process, the impact of the pandemic on their tour, how they met as children through music, and what's coming up next for them. ----------------- LAUNCHLEFT OFFICIAL WEBSITE https://www.launchleft.com LAUNCHLEFT PATREON https://www.patreon.com/LaunchLeft TWITTER https://twitter.com/LaunchLeft INSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/launchleft/ FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/LaunchLeft --------------------- LaunchLeft Podcast hosted by Rain Phoenix is an intentional space for Art and Activism where famed creatives launch new artists. [09:00] How music has evolved in Emily and Theresa's lives as their personal lives have changed and grown. [16:00] How the pandemic impacted Emily and Theresa's lives and music. [23:00] The different experiences and energy Emily and Theresa get performing in certain places vs. others. [32:00] Warpaint's form of activism. KEY TAKEAWAYS: The pandemic gave Emily and Theresa some time to sit back and slow down with their music and helped give them the time they might not otherwise have. As you grow within your personal life, it may affect your music and you should allow it to have new influence as it creates new points of view. Bio: Blending psych-rock, post-punk, dream pop, hip-hop, and more into a smoldering style all their own, Warpaint are one of indie's most acclaimed bands. Their 2008 debut EP, Exquisite Corpse, demonstrated their gifts for hazy sensuality and stripped-down arrangements, qualities they refined on 2010's full-length The Fool (which also marked the debut of powerhouse drummer Stella Mozgawa). From there, the band evolved with each release, whether they polished their sound and added electronics and hints of dub on 2014's self-titled album or gave their music more urgency with 2016's Heads Up. With 2022's Radiate Like This, Warpaint took another leap forward by bringing more clarity to their sound and highlighting their intuitive interplay. Warpaint started work on their fourth album in early 2020, recording the foundations of its songs with engineer turned co-producer Sam Petts-Davies. When the COVID-19 global pandemic hit, the group's members worked on their own, recording their parts in their respective home studios. While the band created the album, Wayman released her second solo album, 2020's TT, and Warpaint performed a streaming acoustic concert in December 2020. They also released the April 2021 single "Lilys," which appeared in the HBO series Made for Love. Released in May 2022, Radiate Like This' tightly crafted songs reflected the time Warpaint spent honing the album. Around the time of its release, Lindberg issued her second solo album, Heart Tax, while Mozgawa and Boom Bip's project Belief debuted with the Versions EP. 2021 saw reissues of some of the most beloved albums in the Lilys' 30+ year history. After many years out-of-print, A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns, Better Can't Make Your Life Better and The 3-Way were all reissued. The band kicks off 2022 by revisiting those classics on tour. It's been more than 15 years since the Kurt Heasley-fronted group has released a proper LP, but something is definitely happening in Lilys land. To commemorate going back out on the road, Heasley – the band's sole consistent member – joined us to discuss the heady days of the 90s music industry and the Lilys' lifelong aversion to staying in one place.

This week on the podcast we are happy to bring you a conversation with Cynthia Tice, founder of the popular sugar-free chocolate brand, Lily’s Sweets. In everything they make, Lilys sources Non-GMO and gluten-free ingredients harvested through Fair Trade practices, and ensures every product is botanically sweetened—meaning no refined or processed sugars. On this episode Cynthia takes us through her own journey with food and how she was a pioneer in the natural foods business with her own Philadelphia market in the late 1970’s. In the early 2000’s she kicked sugar for good but of course her love of chocolate made that difficult. In 2010 she and her long time friend, launched lily’s sweets and since then Lily’s have grown and become a mainstream staple for all of us who want to enjoy well sourced delicious chocolate without the added sugar! Cynthia has now transitioned to overseeing Lily’s philanthropic work, which has been a core component of the company, since its inception. Lily’s pledges a percentage of its earnings to non-profit organizations that support the fight against childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. If you are interested in how to be a conscious entrepreneur and how to create wonderful products without compromising quality, you won’t want to miss this conversation with Cynthia! We are sure it’s going to make your mouth water for some healthy chocolate alternatives this February! Happy Holidays and Happy New Years. This week my guest is Scott Morton who is the part owner and head brewer of Lily's Seafood Grill and Brewery in Royal Oak, MI. Scott was such a wonderful guest, a really great guy. We could sit around and talk beer for hours upon hours. His story starts roughly 22 years ago in Florida with his brother and their restaurants. I really enjoyed listening to his history in the restaurant business as well as brewing business. When you visit Lily's you will be treated to micro biologically clean and flavorful beers true to style to go with their amazing seafood. As always you can join the conversation on my website BillsBeerReport.com or my facebook page, Facebook.com/BillsBeerReport. On today's episode, I talk to musician Kurt Heasley. A Floridian by birth, Kurt spent his early years in Hopatcong, NJ and in Virginia Beach. In 1988, he recorded a demo tape which he gave to Slumberland Records boss Mike Schulman. Schulman was so impressed with the demo that he released Kurt's first records, which were recorded under the name The Lilys. Between 1992 and 2006, Kurt would go on to record eight albums as The Lilys including A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns, Eccsame the Photon Band, and Everything Wrong Is Imaginary, which span genres from shoegaze to psych-rock to mod revival. Although Kurt stopped making music full time to concentrate on other pursuits, he plays every now and then, including some recent shows in Philly and New York. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.

Peter continued out series on the Kingdom of God, looking Matthew 5:13-14 where Jesus called us to be Salt and Light. To see Peter's slides (in PDF format), click here. To download these notes (in PDF format), click here. Normally look at this as a call to holiness. This passage on first reading could be quite condemning. What if I'm not salty enough? Can I lose my salvation? Salt isn't all the other flavours, but it helps bring them out. So it is with the Kingdom of God. Preserves So what does it mean to be salty? Col 4:6 You cannot take the salt out - gravy…. Wilberforce Luke 14:34 As useless as poo! "If we are asleep, when we should be face to face with God, then we will not be good for anything." Terry Virgo daily reading Our saltiness and the brilliance of Christ in our lives is a direct outgrowth of who is at the center of our hearts and our affections. Is there anyone more wonderful, loving, caring, or powerful, than our Lord Jesus Christ? How much do you enjoy being in His presence? The only way we can let the light shine before men is if we have been basking in the light. When you spend time sitting at His feet the joy of being in His presence will be a natural result. You will exude joy! You will exude Christ! You will be the salt of the earth. You will be the light of the world! You will be a city on a hill. Col 3:3-17 The greatest threat to the church of Jesus Christ Is not homosexuality, pornography, abortion, satanism, the government shutting us down or persecution. The greatest threat, I believe, is if we get caught up in a form of godliness and no longer listen to the voice of God..... The religious spirit seeks to replace our passion for Jesus with passion for religious activity and to take the place of the holy spirit in our experience of God. Julian Adams. Anyone who responds to God with a lack of faith will be affected by the leaven of the Pharisees, which eventually affects everything and taints it with unbelief and sin. Your life simply becomes one of works and striving in order to obey religious laws rather than obey one of faith which responds to grace filled revelation. Faith sets as it's target the unseen realities of the kingdom. It is the evidence of that which is unseen. As we respond to truth and revelation, they will unlock ever increasing faith.
