Widowspeak - "Everything is Simple" from the 2022 album The Jacket on Captured Tracks. Brooklyn-based duo Widowspeak are gearing up to release their sixth studio album, The Jacket, on March 11th via longtime label Captured Tracks. Initially intended to be a concept album based on a fictional band, The Jacket morphed into a more personal and biographical meditation on performance and past lives. The record's lead single, “Everything is Simple,” is a gentle alt-folk strummer that sees frontwoman Molly Hamilton wistfully ruminate on constantly shifting perspectives. “Everything is simple 'til it's not,” is the phrase that Hamilton hauntingly bookends the song with, describing a whole variety of possible situations. She had this to say about the meaning behind the “Everything is Simple”: “At the beginning of something (a relationship, a project, a job, a new place) you have this very pure feeling toward it. Everything feels less complicated because you're oriented wholly toward that potential. It's undefined, and that makes it easier to understand, because you can't see the problems yet. As time goes on, you learn more, you experience more, and you see where the limitations exist: not even necessarily ones imposed upon you, but where you draw your own lines. Maybe you can't see what was holding you back until it's in the past, and by then others' perspectives contradict your own. Everyone is constructing their own versions of reality. The song was originally going to feed into the drama of the imaginary band, but it's about our own band too. I was thinking about how I'm an inherently unreliable narrator about my own life, and at the same time maybe there are no ‘true' stories.” The song comes with a bullriding-themed video directed by OTIUM. Watch it at the link below. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Genau darum prangern Molly Hamilton und Robert Earl Thomas auf ihrem neuen, fünften Studioalbum mehrmals finanzielle Missstände an. «Money doesn't grow on trees / Tune out platitudes like these» heisst es da zum Beispiel.

Widowspeak - "Even True Love" from the 2020 album Plum on Captured Tracks. On their fifth full-length Plum, Brooklyn band Widowspeak continue to craft a dreamy folk-pop sound, punctuated by vocalist (and former Tacoma, WA native) Molly Hamilton's serenely-sweet vocals. In a press release, Hamilton shared: "Prior to writing “Even True Love,” I’d been sitting with some existential dread for the last year or so; honestly, sort of overwhelmed by the recognition that life is absurd and finite. The song itself is upbeat, kind of cruising. I was thinking about those youth-glorifying “yolo” type songs and that big mood, but also feeling like there’s so much more to it than that. Maybe because they only live once, humans tend to want to possess things: objects, success, money, experiences, people. True Love. Amassing the most and best of whatever while you can. But that never really landed with me; I think this one is more about being present with the unknown, letting things go a little more, trying not to hold on too tight." Antes en la hora extra sonaron discos del año 1986: Blow Monkeys, They Might be Giants, Housemartins, Crowded House, Bangles, Triffids, Husker Du, Spaceman 3, Cowboy Junkies, This Mortal Coil, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys y New Order. Girl Talking about the Women's March today with special guest Radio Kingston's Hillary Harvey (The Source). Should we believe all the hype about the controversy surrounding the March and keep us from marching? What do you think? You can find the Kingston Women's History Month events that she is involved with at their Facebook page. Our first guest is Marcina Hale, co-producer of the highly impactful film "Disturbing the Peace" and co-founder of Reconsider, an organization that sparks innovation, encouraging creativity, and forms community to make our world more compassionate and connected. She asks the complicated questions, "if you're willing to stand up for someone, are you willing to stand with everyone?" She shares about the 5 movements of transformation that take place during her Reconsider workshops as well as her super top secret, secret of how to be a better human..."stop, drop and roll." You can also hear Marcina's TEDxKCWomen HERE. Our second guest is Molly Hamilton of the band Widowspeak. Molly went to an arts high school in Tacoma, Washington, did some promoting at music venues, writing about music and played music...then moved to New York City, went to the New School, worked for Bowery Presents and various other jobs. Molly talks about the organic formation of her band which quickly became a success and how that changed the pace of her life and her relationship to her music. Seeking to slow things down and reconnect with what was most important to her, she moved from Brooklyn to the Hudson Valley. There's an abundance of creativity flowing from her even though she's not recording or touring, and she is just allowing it to come into form without plan or judgement...more will be revealed! Self CARE! Theresa talks about not being afraid to ask for what you need and being open to receiving and to the magic of it all...and then to be grateful for it! Molly talks about how cooking is her self care. Oh yes, we hear that! Today's show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org. [12/2/2019 note: When I uploaded this episode eight years ago, it contained an audio error that cut off the last several seconds. It has bugged me ever since. So, I went back a couple weeks ago and completely remixed, remastered, and recreated the episode from scratch. I got married a month ago, and these songs were the soundtrack of my wife and I's first year together. They will remind me of that time forever, and I am glad the episode is finally complete.]2011 is almost over, and oh my goodness where did the time go?! The past twelve months were filled with all kinds of good things for me on the life front, and much like last year, there were SO MANY crucial rock n' roll records released and a bunch of killer shows that damaged my eardrums even further. EPISODE #38 of Random Old Records cuts away all of the extra padding and somewhat clever soundbytes and presents an hour of my personal favorite songs of 2011 with no interruptions! You'll hear all the songs I've been raving about since January, including heavy hitters like "Gold Sneakers" by Wax Idols, "Weekend" by Smith Westerns, and "Into Black" by Blouse. You'll hear heavy-duty psychedelic blowouts from The Paperhead, Thee Oh Sees, and The People's Temple, and perfect pop from Dum Dum Girls, Colleen Green, and The Babies. Have a great 2012, and thanks for listening!!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! So yeah, Random Old Records Podcast has been coming out like clockwork every second Wednesday of the month for like a year or so now, but my plans got derailed in the last few days. I had the playlist finalized on Sunday, then came home from work on Monday to find that my computer had taken a dump. LAME! After a couple hours of shopping online and several more hours of staring at progress bars, I had a brand new machine loaded with jams and cracked software and whatnot, so here's Random Old Records Podcast #34, approximately a day late and eight hundred dollars short. It's got roughly an hour of my favorite songs from the past month, and I'm hoping at least some of you faithful readers and listeners will enjoy them, too.Last month, I spoke a bit about being bored with new music, and judging by the stuff coming out lately, it seems like bands across the land are feeling the same way. My ears have gotten burned out by listening to nothing but lo-fi garage rock for awhile, and after hearing like fifty bands dealing in sounds of the sixties and seventies, the only logical place to go is the eighties. I just can't get down with all those sweater-vested weiners aping Talking Heads, but bands ripping off Depeche Mode, The Smiths, and The Cure get an immediate pass in my book. So this episode features a ton of classic tracks from the eighties by The Sound, The Comsat Angels, and Morrissey's band, along with songs by The Fresh And Onlys, Voxtrot, and Pernice Brothers that remind me of that post-punk time when bands slowed down and got all jangly and noisy and weird.Speaking of new music and old music, Captured Tracks has become my favorite label of the last few months. On this episode, you'll hear tunes from Soft Metals, Widowspeak, and Hoop Dreams, which bring back the sounds of the late eighties so perfectly that listening to their records might put you into a time warp. If you like dark dance, gothic country, or nervy college kid pop, then you're gonna love this stuff as much as I do. That Mike Sniper guy has a singular vision for his label that rivals Tony Wilson in his prime. Believe it!If you're a bit confused and are thinking "Well damn, I started listening to Random Old Records because it has a bunch of crazy garage rock n' roll jams every month" then I've got you covered, too. Random Old Records #34 finishes up with the best feral garage pop I've heard in the past month from the new Black Lips LP, The Happy Thoughts, Apache Dropout, and more! This one goes all over the place and back again, and I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had putting it together!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS.
